LETTER FROM AN EDITOR

By Jake Winkle

This one is all about fear, baby.As we inch closer to our own graduation, the real world becomes ever moreapparent with all its ugly, its bad and its uncertainity. It seems like all we canreally do is try to make sense of what we already know to better ourselves forwhat’s to come. Boldly seeking out our fears, drop kicking them and moreimportantly learning from them. But man does it come in many forms. Frompost grad, to clowns, to long words, to even therapy, there’s lots to be said andlots of fighting to do. I believe reading through what we have presented herewill give you some tips and tricks and maybe even a couple cheat codes to fightyour own fears. But don’t take my word for it, I’m literally just the person whomakes this whole thing look pretty.

And yet nothing about this issue is at all pretty. My goal as the Art Directorfor this issue was to have things be visually off. Stretched headlines, jumbledheadlines, headlines that look like dirt, headlines that look hairy, headlines thatlook... you get the point. Of course, the idea of “fear” isn’t really a visual thing orat least something easy to reference from. In the beginning, I genuinely thoughtit was some controlled formula like, “red and black combo always mean feareveryone knows that, duh.” I immediately realized that wasn’t at all the case, and that this theme of fear was more about disbelief, confusion and ideas sobig that it’s impossible to wrap our heads around.

That’s why to me fear is really just something we don’t understand and tomake sense of that we block it out thereby giving it power over us. However, once we accept a fear in all its weirdness, confusion and scale is it really everthat scary? At a first glance of course, but I think if we just know a little bit moreabout what it is that acutally scares us, conquering it isn’t such an unattainablefeat. Hopefully through one of these articles we got here, you reach that realizationwith one of your own fears. But I guess you gotta read this to find out.
