Welcome to Meteor Shower, a world premiere by Steve Martin, and to the opening of the 2016-2017 season. This season promises to be one of the most exciting that Long Wharf has ever presented. None is more thrilling for all of us than this new play by the extraordinary Steve Martin. It is impossible to overstate the breadth and depth of Steve’s gifts. If you attend Long Wharf with any regularity you will have seen, over the past few seasons, Picasso at the Lapin Agile and The Underpants, two of his hilarious and brilliant full length plays. As most of you know, these works are just the tip of the iceberg. His solo work in the 1970s and 80s changed the face of entertainment in the English-speaking world. It would be difficult to overstate the impact that his radical approach to comedy had on his generation and on generations to follow. His act was a send-up to entertainment itself—our first postmodern comedian. At once subversive and populist, Steve Martin was a game changer. We just have to remind ourselves that “excuuuuuse me” and “wild and crazy guy” were not part of our lexicon before Steve Martin. His early comedy albums sold millions, and in his touring days he sold out stadiums. His success as a comedian led to a blockbuster movie career, writing and starring in some of the most original comedies of their time: The Jerk, The Man with Two Brains, Three Amigos, and the underappreciated Bowfinger, not to mention Roxanne, his brilliant adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac. And let’s not forget the movies he’s acted in: Parenthood; Father of the Bride; Planes, Trains, and Automobiles; The Pink Panther; The Spanish Prisoner ; and on and on. The movies are just a part of his career. An accomplished essayist for The New Yorker, novelist, art collector, and Grammy Award-winning banjo musician, he also wrote book and music for Bright Star, which premiered on Broadway last season. Tonight, we celebrate Steve Martin’s newest accomplishment, Meteor Shower—a comedy about marriage, sex, and the subconscious. How much of what we think about and desire do we repress? What if you were suddenly face to face with your shadow self? All of us who are reading this, me included, suppress a significant percentage of what we feel and what we wish to do in the name of being a grown-up and living as a civilized human being. But the things we repress have a tendency to show up in odd places, and at odd times. This is the subject of Meteor Shower, the opening show of a season that features Brian Dennehy in Endgame, Other People’s Money, Napoli Brooklyn, a co-production with the Roundabout Theatre in New York, Smart People, and Table, a new musical comedy by Adam Gopnik and David Shire. What a thrilling season it will be! I look forward to seeing you all here again and again.

Gordon Edelstein

from the M A N A G I N G D I R E C T O R

Welcome to Meteor Shower, the first show of the 2016 - 2017 season! Over the last few years, Long Wharf has reaffirmed its commitment to the development and production of new work. Sometimes, we produce a play which only one or two other theatres have already produced because we think that its content will be of interest to you, our audience, and because it can offer the show’s creators an opportunity to continue to develop his or her play. The best recent example was last season’s My Paris, which had its world premiere production at Goodspeed Musicals’ Norma Terris Theatre in Chester. However, this season we have made a commitment to produce more world premieres. When this happens, we often work with a playwright for years to help develop a production before you see it on our stages. Gordon has been working with Steve Martin on Meteor Shower for the past couple of years. Table, which will close our season, has been in development for over six years, with Long Wharf being directly involved over the last three years. During the development period, we provide opportunities for the director (sometimes Gordon, sometimes someone else) to work with the playwright to provide direction on rewrites. Long Wharf also finances workshops, which can happen either in New Haven or New York (depending on artist availability). During these workshops, professional actors perform the scripts, and the playwright makes changes based on what he or she discovers from the actors’ performances. If you had the good fortune to attend our Contemporary American Voices Festival at the beginning of September, then you received a feel for the end product of these workshops. If this process is of interest to you, I recommend the book “Hamilton: The Revolution” which does an excellent job documenting the development of that phenomenon. We also frequently work with other partners, which are usually theatres from all over the country. For Meteor Shower, we worked with our colleagues at The Old Globe in San Diego, who produced this play over the summer. For Napoli Brooklyn, which will be on the Mainstage this winter, we are collaborating with the Roundabout Theatre Company in New York. These partnerships really benefit the playwright, allowing him or her to continue rewriting with the benefit of seeing the production in two different cities. These kinds of partnerships are a key part of our history and critical for the development of new plays in America. This particular season has a lot of new work, with three world premieres on the Claire Tow Stage. Each one showcases the talents of unique artists, and I hope you find them engaging and satisfying. As always, please feel free to email me at joshua.borenstein@longwharf.org with any thoughts you wish to share. Thank you for coming this evening, and enjoy the show.

Josh Borenstein

A LOOK FORWARD

“Funny, serious, suspenseful, involving, disturbing, and, above all, expertly crafted... [with] both epic grandeur and intimate titillation.” – N.Y. MagaziNe

By Jerry Sterner | DirecteD By Marc Bruni Larry ‘The Liquidator’ Garfinkle is a donut-chomping, fasttalking Wall Street takeover artist, and if you are running a business, he’s the last person you want to darken your door. When he goes crazy over New England Wire and Cable’s undervalued stock, it’s up to Kate, a brilliant young lawyer, to stop him from gutting the company. Can she save her hometown’s venerable factory from a gleeful corporate shark? Or should she?
