ED MOSES Paintings and Drawings
Ed Moses (b.1926) Before visiting New York and exposure to Abstract Expressionists including Rothko, de Kooning, and writer Greenberg, Ed Moses attended the Long Beach City College, University of Oregon and UCLA. As a member of the first generation stable at Ferus Gallery and key member of the Cool School (Larry Bell, Kauffman, Ed Ruscha), Moses’ works feature varied levels of abstraction from semi-representational to color fields and “crackle paintings.” His long and prominent career on the west coast of the United States has earned solo shows at LACMA and MOCA, Los Angeles and inclusion of major collections such as the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Hammer Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Museum of Modern Art, New York.. An experimental, ever-changing artist, Ed Moses has had a more than fifty-year career as a noted artist in non-objective and abstract styles. Characteristic of his technique is that he seldom uses a brush but instead works by staining, knifing, splashing and mopping, and achieves his lines by using tape and snap lines. This collection of paintings and drawings, from the 80s and 90s, primarily comes straight from The Molly and Walter Bareiss Family Collection, including two major paintings exhibited in the artist’s retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. These two paintings, Vinca 1989 & Rankin #2 1992 are also pictured in the MOCA catalog titled: ED MOSES, A Retrospective of the Paintings and Drawings, 1951-1996.
