epresented across the country and internationally collected, Martin continues to impress audiences with her bold work. Based in Los Angeles, America is a Columbian–American fine artist who has received international recognition for her unique combination of abstract and indigenous motifs. Her accomplished confidence in mark making and gesture is clearly that of a dedicated and prolific artist. America’s work can be found in galleries around the world as well as the private collections of celebrities such as Danny Devito, Kirsten Dunst, Ted Danson, and John Ratzenberger. Although she was born in the United States, America’s Colombian heritage is obvious and alive in her work through striking use of color, bold lines, and compositions that are generous both in size and emotion. America’s portraits create depictions of the human form that are larger than life. This exhibit is an amalgam of America’s Colombian roots and the inspiration she’s finds in her reading and her travels. Martin finds joy in the re-telling of these stories, and in the process has discovered a lexicon through which she has created her own allegory.

Martin has been working on what she calls Mixed Media Her own words below Mixed media on paper: My wish was to make my own colored paper. The adventure began by cutting out paper and photographing the abstract shapes. I took these shapes to the computer, this demi-god of our day. Using very technical terms, I went about smooshing, ironing, flattening and melding them into compositions that pleased. I sent these steam rolled images to a small artisan print house, and printed each image on 100% cotton rag paper. Then with oil, ink and pencil I found the stories and shapes to pull to the surface. The joy of this new series in mixed media is what I call making my own colored paper. I adore the clean freshness and flatness of these surfaces.
