"The Heart of it All" Pride Bands Alliance Conference Performances Program
Hello!
Welcome to beautiful Columbus, Ohio for the 2024 Pride Bands Alliance National Conference!
This week brings nearly 400 musicians from across the country to Columbus for camaraderie, music making, and fabulous new experiences. It is the honor of The Columbus Pride Bands to host this year’s conference, uplifting not only our own community, but also our national organization through LGBTQ+ music, visibility, and pride.
The performances you are about to hear are the culmination of countless hours of preparation undertaken by our planning committee, artistic directors, guest conductors, and musicians.
I want to express my deep appreciation to all the individuals involved in making this concert, and this conference, a reality and to the Pride Bands Alliance for entrusting us with hosting this event. Our conference director Tim Yanok, as well as my colleagues and friends Jennifer Olis and Jon Noworyta deserves special recognition for their tireless efforts to make this week a success.
I also want to draw your attention to what I believe will be the highlight of our finale concert, the world premiere of John and Jim by the acclaimed composer Viet Cuong. Commissioned by both The Columbus Pride Bands and The Queen City Freedom Band of Cincinnati for this conference, the piece is a celebration of the relationship shared between John Arthur and Jim Obergefell, and the role they played in bringing marriage equality to the United States of America.
Our theme this week has been “The Heart of it All.” Throughout the conference both our host musicians from Columbus and our guests from 27 member bands, many of whom are first time attendees, have shared laughs, meals, and memories. It is the connections we form, the relationships we build, and the experiences we share that make these events and this organization special. What could be more at “The Heart of it All” than that?

SwingColumbus is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit educational and social dance organization. We enjoy, evolve, preserve, study, and teach swing-era dance forms.
These American Rhythm dances come from vernacular African-American dances that co-developed with swing jazz music of the 1920s – 1940s. Social swing dance has 6-count and 8-count patterns, danced to 4/4 music with a “swung” beat.

“The Heart of it All” Concert Band Guest Artistic Directors
Jon Gomez (Phoenix, AZ)
Jon Gomez is the Artistic Director of the Arizona Wind Symphony in Phoenix, AZ and comes to us with an impressive resume of experience and accolades. Jon is currently an educational consultant and clinician for the Conn-Selmer Division of Education and serves on the Midwest Clinic Advisory Committee. Although he is not directly affiliated with a PBA ensemble, Jon was encouraged to apply by musicians who play in both the Arizona Wind Symphony and Desert Overture, and we think he will be an exceptional addition to our team.
Timothy Norris (Seattle, WA)
Timothy Norris is also an Ohio native and Artistic Director within Pride Bands Alliance. Tim currently serves as Interim Concert Band Music Director with Rainbow City Performing Arts in Seattle, Washington. He previously held the position of the Managing Artistic Director with that same organization, and led the Oak Lawn Band in Dallas, Texas from 2011-2016.
Dean McDowell (Palm Springs CA)
Dean McDowell has served as the Artistic Director of the Desert Winds Freedom Band for 17 years. Before moving to Palm Springs, Dean and his late husband Bob Montooth were among the founding leaders of the Capital Pride Band (now known as the Columbus Pride Bands). We are happy to welcome Dean home to Columbus as we host our first Pride Bands Alliance Conference.
Deborah Hirsch (Houston, TX)
Deborah Hirsch is in her eighth season as the Artistic Director of the Houston Pride Band, and previously served as the host Artistic Director for the 2021 “Bigger and Brighter” Pride Bands Alliance Conference in Houston. Deborah has 40 years of teaching experience and stays active through conducting symposia and by serving as a guest conductor and clinician for region and all-city bands around Texas.
Scott Helms (Phoenix, AZ)
Scott Helms, the founding Artistic Director of Desert Overture, is a prominent figure in LGBTQ+ advocacy and music. His contributions include directing the premiere of "A Belch Can Ruin a Wedding" and serving in leadership roles with the Lesbian-Gay Band Association, showcasing his extensive musical and artistic expertise.
Manic Maxxie (Chicago, IL)
Manic Maxxie currently serves as the Artistic Director of The Lakeside Pride Pops Ensemble in Chicago, IL. Maxxie’s drag is inspired by gender fluidity, black women, and chaotic energy. She enjoys celebrating the work of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) artists and is inspired by many of the scene’s most iconic black drag performers. She is an energetic and engaging musician who last guest conducted with the Pride Bands Alliance in 2022.
The “alluring” (The New York Times), “arresting” (Gramophone), “irresistible” (San Francisco Chronicle), and “exhilarating” (Chicago Tribune) music of Vietnamese-American composer Viet Cuong (b. 1990) has been commissioned and performed on six continents by musicians and ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic, Eighth Blackbird, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Sō Percussion, Alarm Will Sound, Atlanta Symphony, Sandbox Percussion, Albany Symphony, PRISM Quartet, and Dallas Winds, among many others. Cuong’s music has been featured in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, National Gallery of Art, and Library of Congress, and his works for wind ensemble have amassed several hundreds of performances worldwide, including at Midwest, WASBE, and CBDNA conferences.
Photos by Aaron Jay Young
In his music Cuong enjoys exploring the unexpected and whimsical, and he is often drawn to projects where he can make peculiar combinations and sounds feel enchanting or oddly satisfying. His notable works thus include concerti for tuba and dueling oboes, percussion quartets utilizing wine glasses and sandpaper, and pieces for double reed sextet, cello octet, and solo snare drum. This eclecticism extends to the variety of musical groups he writes for, and he has worked closely with ensembles ranging from middle school bands to Grammy-winning orchestras and chamber ensembles.
His wind ensemble works are widely performed, having been programmed by the world’s preeminent wind bands such as the Dallas Winds and military bands including the United States Navy Band, “President’s Own” Marine Band, “Pershing’s Own” Army Band, Army Field Band, Coast Guard Band, and Air Force Band.
These works have also been performed by the top wind ensembles at academic institutions such as the University of Texas at Austin, University of Michigan, University of North Texas, Louisiana State University, University of Miami, and Michigan State University. Passionate about bringing all these di erent facets of the contemporary music community together, his recent works include Vital Sines, a concerto for Eighth Blackbird and the United States Navy Band, and Re(new)al, a concerto for percussion quartet with a variety of ensemble accompaniments.
John and Jim
Written By: Viet Cuong
“I first heard the name Obergefell in 2015 when the case that bears it, Obergefell v. Hodges, was decided by the Supreme Court. Among the most important in history for queer Americans, this landmark ruling granted marriage rights to all same sex couples. At that moment, Obergefell was etched in history. For those writing about the law, the name would thereafter be written in italics, and today it’s as much a shorthand for the case law of marriage equality as it is the name of a man. But at its core, the case begins with two people.
John Arthur and Jim Obergefell were married in July of 2013. They had been together in a loving relationship for 22 years, and Jim was caring for John as he faced the end stages of ALS. In the last year of John’s life, they traveled on a medical plane to Maryland—one of just a handful of states where same-sex marriage was legal at the time—to be married. The marriage ceremony was conducted on board the plane before they returned home to Ohio for their last months together.
John passed away that October, and, because Ohio did not recognize their marriage as legal, Jim had to challenge the state in court to be listed as John’s surviving spouse on his death certificate. The state appealed, and the court battle worked its way through the legal system until 2015, when Jim and his team were victorious before the Supreme Court. Their efforts ensured that the relationships of same sex couples, including my marriage to my husband, would be seen as equal under the law. For that I am deeply and personally grateful.
“John and Jim” is my effort to pay tribute to the men whose love and devotion gave rise to great change, and I do so by interpolating source material from an iconic piece of traditional wedding music: Pachelbel’s Canon in D. In my youth I adored Pachelbel’s Canon, and I learned a piano arrangement of it when I was 11 years old. For months I would play the piece every morning before school, endlessly repeating its bass line while improvising melodies when the treble clef’s music ran out. Through these explorations, I discovered some basic principles of music composition, and it was through the Pachelbel that I began composing in earnest. It was also around that time that I first learned of its use in weddings, as it was the frequent soundtrack to reality TV shows chronicling the weddings of straight couples.
At the time it saddened me that music I found so beautiful was emblematic of something that, according to the law, I could never have. It feels fitting then, that in the year of my own wedding to my partner of 11 years, reframing (and perhaps reclaiming) the Pachelbel should provide the inspiration for a celebration of marriage equality.
My piece is a conversation between two alternating phrases, one of which uses melodic fragments and harmonic progressions from the Canon in D as source material. In the Canon, Pachelbel establishes a single bass line and layers it with several melodies, two of which are quite iconic but never performed simultaneously in the original. I disassembled and rewrote these to work harmoniously with one another upon the arrival of the piece’s climax, which appears after several minutes of what I think of as the music finding and piecing itself together.
Ultimately, I believe “John and Jim” sounds like both a departure and nod to the piece that first inspired me to compose. All of this takes place in a reverberant atmosphere, where notes linger and continually echo around one another, symbolic of both the persistence and impact of people like John and Jim.
Heartfelt thanks to the Pride Bands Alliance for this opportunity to tell my story and celebrate John Arthur, Jim Obergefell, and the progress that has been made in the name of love.”

The band's story traces back to 1999 when a lone trumpeter, on a dare, lent his brass to the Bat-N-Rouge softball charity event, igniting the crowd with familiar tunes like "Charge" and "Eat 'em Up Raw Raw Raw" alongside the FDS Hygiene cheerleaders. Inspired by this grassroots engagement, the trumpeter and a percussionist friend organized a 13-member pep band the following year, capturing the event's spirit with infectious enthusiasm.
In June 2003, amidst the vibrant streets of downtown Columbus, 28 musicians proudly took their first steps in what would become a historic march—the inaugural Pride parade appearance of the Capital Pride Band of Columbus. This moment marked a significant milestone for a band whose journey began with humble origins and a daring spirit.
Since those early days, the band has flourished, evolving into the Columbus Pride Bands with over 100 musicians today. Beyond their iconic presence at the Pride Parade, the band enriches the cultural tapestry of Columbus with regular concert performances, including classical, big band, and contemporary pieces at esteemed venues such as the Lincoln Theater and Capitol Theater.
The band's influence extends far beyond concert halls, resonating through various community engagements. Members perform in diverse ensembles like the Pep Band during OSU football season, holiday ensembles at German Village Lights, and cater to private events ranging from drag shows to Oktoberfest, embodying the band's versatility and inclusivity.
In 2021, the band rebranded as the Columbus Pride Bands, reaffirming their commitment to unity and diversity. Their mission, supported by sponsors, donors, volunteers, and community engagement, remains steadfast—to enrich lives through music and celebrate the spirit of Columbus.
As the Columbus Pride Bands continue to march forward, their melodies echo the vibrancy and resilience of a community united in pride and harmony. Join us in supporting their mission to inspire, entertain, and foster inclusivity through the power of music.
