I was thrilled at the chance to design for The Ross’ because I truly relate to them, coming from a background in music, theater, and visual art. My life has been spent performing professionally as a singer (mostly of jazz and popular music) and recording and producing as an independent singer/songwriter. I even dabbled in fashion and costume design over the years and had some of my designed outfits custom-made for my performances. Naturally, I was eager to use my perspective of a life in the arts to design a space that was both functional and inspiring for the Ross Family.
My inspiration for the design of the Dogwood Acres home was drawn from the clients’ creative backgrounds. William, a Music industry professional very clearly has an affinity for Jazz music, evident in the fact he nicknamed their son Jasper - “Jazz”. I imagined he would be willing to mix things up and enjoy a space that is full of the playful contrast, much like the pull-push of syncopation of this music. Avery, as a fashion designer would be one who embraced color, pattern, and texture, as a visual and tactile person. I also took inspiration for design elements from the special items requested by the clients. I allowed these to be my guide, offering clues as to their taste in furniture, the overall version of the modern look they desired, as well as their artistic expression.

PERSPECTIVE: MUSIC LOUNGE & BILLIARD ROOM
The ‘Jasper’ sofa was selected as a playful nod to the clients’ son who they have affectionally nicknamed ‘Jazz’.
A colorful abstract rug provides the inspiration for pattern and colors int the throw pillows and ties into the color palette of the rest of the home.
