m g a n i 1 ork w rl gi ONE OF THE TREATS OF MBFWA WAS EMMA MULHOLLAND’S ACCESSORIES - A COLLABORATION WITH PARED EYEWEAR AND CELESTE TESORIERO FOR HER ‘WORKING GIRL’ INSPIRED SPRING/SUMMER 14/15 COLLECTION ‘RISQUÉ BUSINESS’. all photos backstage at EMMA MULHOLLAND’s MBFWA show ‘Risqué Business’. Drawing inspiration from John Hughes’ famous eighties ‘brat pack’ and Melanie Griffith in the movie ‘Working Girl’, complete with pens, paper clips and post-it inspired prints and embellishments, Mulholland’s collection depicts what happens after 5pm when jaded working girls and boys can finally free themselves from the daily grind. Androgynous porcelain tanned models walked down the runway looking bored and lifeless carrying oversized briefcases and boogie boards whilst wearing sparkling socks with sneakers - desperate to break free from their boring job and escape to the beach. And then there were the accessories. Teaming up with fellow designers Celeste Tesoriero and Pared Eyewear for custom made pieces to compliment her collection Mulholland explains of the jewelery collaboration: “The jewellery was inspired by
6
what I used to make for myself in class at school, playing around with paper clips, bull clips etc but I wanted it to have a much more sophisticated look to it, hence getting together with Celeste.” The 10 pieces of fine silver and gold-plated brass jewellery include shapes and items from everyday office stationary. The Pared Eyewear collaboration is something Mulholland says she has wanted to do for a long time. “I met Sam, from Pared on a trip to Bali and instantly fell in love with her sunnie range” explains Mulholland, “her ‘Puss in Boots’ with pink mirror lens in particular.” After much deliberation and designing the girls came up with the 80’s inspired ‘wave temple’ design as featured in the show. Eyewear available now at www.emmamulholland.com Jewellery dropping soon.

INTRIGUED BY THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN AT THE RECENT NEUW DENIM LAUNCH IN A BACK STREET GALLERY SPACE IN SYDNEY’S SURRY HILLS, 1AM GETS THE SCOOP ON ‘LEON’ AND HOW HE FITS INTO THEIR NEW BLACK ROPE DENIM RANGE. Tell us about the concept behind the melting wax man featured at the recent launch and then at the General Pants Sydney CBD store and how does it relate to the new Black Rope range? The melting wax man, who we call Leon, was modelled by the artist Nick Pledge and represents the technique we have developed for our new range, Black Rope. We have coated the rope dyed yarn with a wax. As you wear the jeans the wax gradually wears down revealing the dyed yarn and then the core of the yarn. The end result is a jean with the depth of colour and patina of worn leather. Our wax man is an embodiment of this process and during the launch we gradually melted him and the organic melting process made him more and more intriguing, revealing his backbone and making wax patterns. He became less of a mannequin and more a piece of art. This reflects how we feel about jeans, becoming more and more interesting over time.
10
We understand you’re deeply passionate about all things denim and there are always many references to its history and popular culture in the various Neuw Denim lines - is this the case with this range and what are the inspirations and influences behind it? Absolutely, this range is inspired by what our favorite musicians wore: leather, suede and denim. We love clothes with mood, character and a dark undertone. For this range we were inspired by The Velvet Underground’s White Light/ White Heat, Big Joe Williams’ Super Black Blues and of course Patti Smith’s Horses amongst others. How are these reinterpreted and contemporised? In a number of ways; for styling we are inspired by the actual items these artists wore. Par the creative director collects many of these pieces so we can look at them first hand. We look at the garments from the 1960’s and 1970’s and reference many of
the key features such as the construction, wash and cast of the denim and the detailing but we create our silhouettes to be appealing to our contemporary customer. To update the fabric we work closely with our denim mills to develop new techniques and treatments so our range doesn’t look like a vintage clothes rack but a contemporary range of sharp and interesting pieces with a story. You manage to merge both intellectualism and emotion into your pieces - is this an important dynamic for the brand or just an intrinsic part of your particular process of jeans making? Both, it has to be a combination. Our passion and way of making jeans has created the brand as it is today. Our customers are interested in the history of our designs and the references we make but they also love our fits and our fabrics.

m l r a r 1 tg rio CREATING A MINI FASHION MOVEMENT AT AUSTRALIAN FASHION WEEK LAST MONTH WITH HER HAND PAINTED SLOGAN T-SHIRTS, MODEL-CUM-ACTIVIST OLLIE HENDERSON LAUNCHED HER ‘START THE RIOT’ PROJECT WITH 100 T-SHIRTS HANDED OUT TO MODELS BACKSTAGE. WE CHAT TO OLLIE ABOUTS ITS SUCCESS AND THE LAUNCH OF HER NEW WEBSITE ‘HOUSE OF RIOT’. pictured top left: OLLIE HENDERSON, AMANDA WARE & MARCELLA RUSSO photographed backstage at HAYLEY ELSAESSER by GLENN HUNT. You’ve just launched a website called ‘House of Riot’ – is this the new home for your ‘Start The Riot’ project? Yes! The Start the Riot project was originally only supposed to run over Australian fashion week but due to the success of the project I have decided to keep it going. I’ve put together a website as a space where people can see and interact with the Start the Riot project and other projects of the House of Riot. To roll the project out over fashion week was genius. How did it all come about, was it planned for then or just happen and snowball? It was planned for Fashion Week! Any model will tell you there are cameras in your face 24/7, usually kind of annoying if you are trying to chill between shows, but very useful if you have something to say. Last year I wore a t-shirt that said “Suck my Cervix”, it got a lot of attention. This sparked the idea for slogan tees so I just ran with it. Did you expect it to be embraced as much as it did and were you surprised at the response? By the end of fashion week all the models were wearing them and everyone was photographing them. I was completely blown away by the response. I was expecting a little attention, maybe a few blogs or local press, but the big surprise was how international it went. We had write ups in US 12
Vogue, US Harpers, French Elle, i-D, Style.com and many more. It was also wonderful to get regular people writing to me about the project. I had one teenager from Canada write to me asking if she could help out from Toronto in any way. It was really cool to see how it had inspired young people from across the globe. Slogan t-shirts have been done many times before but you have definitely made this your own with a cohesive stylistic element that runs through the series which I feel adds to it’s impact and strength - is this at your own hand, do you physically paint, stencil and embellish them all yourself or is it a collaboration? They are all hand painted by me. There have been many late nights working away in my studio. I have kind of dug my own grave with this one, the style and continuity of the shirts is with my hand writing, so I can’t really get any help with the painting. I have had a lot of help from friends in different ways, helping put together a zine, building the website, general advice and just keeping me company whilst I work. I couldn’t have done it without their support. You’ve tapped into a sentiment - obviously young people want a voice and a way to express themselves and even though there are so many mediums available today it’s still hard to be
heard, especially if you are running against the establishment or mainstream, and particularly in fashion. Have you had any resistance to the project or just lots of support? I haven’t really had any resistance. I was expecting some kind of backlash but it never came. Everyone has been super supportive. I feel that this shows that people are really ready to start talking about these issues and start taking action. What should we expect to see in the ‘House of Riot’ in the future? Many things! House of Riot are now selling the Start the Riot T-Shirts, 20% of profits will go to charity, the first being Amnesty International. We will continue to write and produce Zines, highlighting current political issues, make other punk apparel, work with charities and activist organisation to host events, collaborate with local artist musicians and designers, making films and more. I want to bring back Punk as more than just a fashion movement it’s about people who give a fuck!

YOUSEF AKBAR With a string of industry awards under his belt since his graduation from TAFE in 2013, the former Dion Lee intern and Romance Was Born assistant brought his artful aesthetic to this years Innovators runway to launch his first womanswear collection. The decision to abandon his original career path has certainly paid off for Yousef Akbar who came to Australia from Saudi Arabia to study logistics. But fashion was his calling and it was while completing his Master’s at Sydney University that Akbar discovered one could study, and train for a career in fashion. “Back home there is no avenue to study fashion,” says Akbar, “you are usually in the fashion industry, like being a tailor, because your family has always done that. I have always been designing my own clothes and usually driving the tailors a bit crazy with my ideas!” Watch out for a menswear line from Akbar in the near future. www.yousefakbar.com @mr_yousefakbar

DORIS Q Hardly a newcomer to fashion, it was after attending the prestigious Central St. Martins school in London that Doris Qiu created her first capsule collection in 2012 under the moniker The Letter Q, which was picked up up by a leading boutique in Soho, Hong Kong and sold out immediately. DORIS Q‘s first full collection launched in 2013 and was picked up by Nasty Gal along with one of the largest retailers in the US, Urban Outfitters. For her Spring/Summer 14/15 New Generation show ‘Chasing Ice’, Qiu was inspired by the collapse of glaciers and the devastatingly beautiful documentary of the same name by environmental photographer James Balog, creating a dramatic story comprising foamy neoprene, sporty mesh, water proof fabrics and wispy silks to create a glacial effect. “The way the glaciers moved and icebergs collapsed into the sea reminded me of a sleeping Tyrannosaurus waking up,” she explaines, “it was haunting and spectacular at the same time, which I wanted to reflect in this collection.” Qui is also currently a contributing editor to Elle China. www.dorisqlabel.com @_DORISQ_
BEI NA WEI Hitting the runway of The Innovators show for the launch of her Spring/Summer 14/15 collection, Australian Graduate Fashion Designer of the Year 2013, BEI NA WEI is already capturing the attention of the fashion industry with her bold minimalism and powerfully feminine sculptural designs. Enrolling at the renowned Fashion Design Studio at Sydney TAFE, Wei found her love for clothes too overpowering to continue with a fast tracked career in electrical engineering. With an all or nothing attitude, Bei Na quit her day job designing power station control systems and completely immersed herself in studying fashion design. Strongly influenced by a summer studying experimental patternmaking at Central Saint Martins in London, her designs strike a delicate balance between intelligent technical mastery and luxurious details. Her debut collection explores and pushes fabrications beyond their traditional uses, twisting industrial strength meshes into elegant draped dresses and basic beads into geometric 3D structural embellishments. www.beinawei.com @beinawei

Graduating from the prestigious TAFE Fashion Design Studio in Sydney just last year, HAYLEY DAWSON launched her debut collection for Spring/ Summer 14/15 as part of the Innovators show. The label’s aesthetic is very much an extension of her personality. Relaxed, laidback and minimalist, with a masculine twist: “My collection is called ‘Aerosynthesis’ and the inspiration was Amelia Earhart,” says Dawson. “I read a book about her years ago and she stuck with me. With her as my muse I looked to all things aviation – actual aircraft, uniforms, even the art of making paper planes. I’m drawn to androgynous, streamlined silhouettes so I fused these ideas together and formed a kind of utilitarian vs. minimalist collection. I keep things simple and my own aesthetic is very much ‘less is more’. There is beauty in simplicity, but I always aim to use interesting textures and the highest quality fabrics. The cuts are structurally tailored, but there is a strong relaxed element as well. Wearability was my aim when designing this collection. I constantly asked myself, would I wear this? If the answer was no, then it didn’t make the cut.”
Former Sydney Institute of Technology alumni Anna Hoang, the creative behind the Sydney based ANNA QUAN, debuted her first collection at the Fashion Palette 2013. Taking to the New Generation runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia to unveil her Spring/Summer 14/15 collection ‘Cosa Nostra’, Hoang drew inspiration from the gang of notorious Italian mobsters, marrying strong tailoring with sheer and softer tones, playing up on the contradiction between the respectable uniform of the Cosa Nostra and their actual activities. Borrowing from the female silhouette of the 1950s, underwear becomes outerwear and is juxtaposed against masculine lapels and shoulders. Her defiant tailoring and minimalistic silhouettes with windows of organza allude to femininity, whilst satin racer stripes and seams add a touch of modern luxe. Pretty cool from someone who started out studying to become a lawyer before embarking on her creative journey as a fashion designer.
Based in Sydney, RACHELALEX is the product of designer sisters Rachel and Alexandra Sims. Debuting their first ready-to-wear collection as part of the New Generation show this year, ‘Fractured Space’ artistically depicts the designers’ vision of a topsy-turvy landscape with a combination of symmetric and asymmetric cut digitally printed garments. “Visually narrating a story of reconstructed museum environments revealing unusual perspectives of spatial realms that are most often overlooked by the viewer” say the duo. Both graduating in 2012, Rachel with honours in textile and graphic design from The College of Fine Arts, UNSW, having previously interned at Peter Pilotto in London. Alexandra did a Bachelor of Fashion Design at the Whitehouse Institute of Design, her graduating collection receiving the Vogue Australia Award in 2012 and selected to show at Who’s Next Prêt-APorter Paris Trade Show in July 2013. Watch this dynamic duo for more great things in the future.

How long have you been modelling? I have been modelling for nearly two and a half years now and it was only in the past year that I became International. Was this your first Australian Fashion Week? Yes, this was my first Fashion Week in Australia and I had such a wonderful time. It will be one to remember and I can’t wait to be apart of it all over again. Shows you walked at this year MBFWA? I walked for Ellery, Bec & Bridge, Karla Spetic, Ginger & Smart, Toni Maticevski, Christopher Esber, Haryono Setiadi, Dion Lee, Emma Mulholland, Alice McCall, Macgraw and Discount Universe. Highlights for you? Would definitely have to be opening for Alice McCall and Dion Lee, as it was the first time I’ve ever had the honour of doing so. Have you walked Internationally? Previous to doing MBFWA I was in Paris for the AW15 shows. I was lucky enough to be able to walk for designers such as Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent and Yohji Yamamoto. I was also picked to walk exclusively for Christopher Kane in London. What you most enjoy about doing runway shows? The adrenaline rush that builds as you wait in line for your turn, and that moment when you step out onto the runway. Tell us anything exciting you have done post fashion week and anything on the cards or plans for the future. I have just been to NY for a very exciting shoot with Grace Coddington from US Vogue, and am now in Paris. I’ll also be heading to Monaco for the Louis Vuitton Cruise show. It’s all happening! No plans as of yet for what will happen after Paris, but there has been talk of either returning to NY or Tokyo. Instagram: @madi_stubbington

In a place and time In a place and time, you are no longer mine A thousand memories, but they are only memories To fade away Into your suppressant mind Time is at a stand still To go back Would be a dream But it would not be the same It is never the same. Cold wind chills A storm on the horizon Clouds that move in a vacant stand still As if time has stopped But you are still breathing, are you not? To inhale the fresh seaforth air Rare amongst the sky scrappers, of the city line Waves crash along the shore line Angry Anger from the wild wind blows Anguish Moods that change from glee Unhappiness Surrounding Grey is the colour But the seasons pass They long for the summer To come soon enough.
