drawing inspiration from Nabokov’s infamous novel ‘Lolita’, ROZY THOMAS the creative force behind trippy newcomer clothing label NYMPHETS is leading a new wave of young designer talent shaking up the local fashion scene with a fresh sense of whats perfect >

THE FLEDGLING brand is a tender eight months old, but NYMPHETS is quickly gaining notoriety within the Auckland fashion scene. Thomas uses bright colours and mixed patterns to create an unorthodox and seemingly unmethodical look to her line and, while the final product could be described as bizarre, we, like her many fans, think the helter-skelter vibe is just per fect!

“Nymphets are irresistible young girls that are ethereal and mysterious and I wanted to bring that aspect to my label. NYMPHETS is about immortalising youth and spreading these delicate and celestial qualities through clothing. The perfect look to me is one that is bright and allows light to pass through it, provoking stares from bystanders. I love extravagance and

overstimulating the eye with colours, patterns, and textures that are messy and chaotic. Nymphets clothing is currently stocked in only two Auckland stores, Snake Pit (Luck/House) and HYPE STORE. I recently completed the first NYMPHETS film about an exorcism, which I am hoping to release next month and also looking to launch a new mini collection for the summer ‘12/13.”

for a true perfectionist like KIT LAWRENCE of hot new menswear label ALEXANDER BALFOUR, it’s the strive that fuels the drive, and not the destination but the ‘perfect’ getting there that counts!

E P Y H t c e f r pe HAILING from the UK, a true perfectionist with a creative background that runs the gamut from fine art through graphic design, one-off clothing pieces and custom accessories, to music, as he’s more locally renown for here with the electronic act PIG OUT he formed soon after arriving to New Zealand in 2004. It was a natural progression then for the multitalented KIT LAWRENCE to realising a dream of his own menswear label that ALEXANDER BALFOUR was born, debuting for A/W 2012 with ‘1977’ a range mixing European

outwear staples with casual sportswear influenced basics in performance fabrics - now stocked at his newly opened store HYPE along with partner Michelle Penrice’s label MP, Pardon My French, Nymphets (featured in this issue) and 6 x 4. So what’s up next for ALEXANDER BALFOUR? Read on!! “My idea of a perfect outfit is feeling that the clothes you are wearing facilitate your lifestyle on any given day - so in that sense it’s transitory. That’s why my label goes from very casual and sporty through to shirts,

trenches and dress pants. Today I’m wearing a merino tee and shirt from my 1977 label. It took forever to get the shirt pattern right, cutting the collar pattern by hand, slimming the side panels, and it feels perfect to me. I began designing clothing to create the perfect trench coat, the perfect anorak, the perfect shirt etc. but I quickly realised when you’re compelled to create, nothing you design is perfect for long though which is what keeps me interested. Right now I’m working on the perfect swimwear for ALEXANDER BALFOUR SWIM for Summer 2013.”

WITH DESIGNS inspired by song lyrics from local record label Arch Hill’s extensive catalogue, including Family Cactus, The Clean and Street Chant, celebrated artist JOHN REYNOLDS created 24 multi-

layered pieces of artwork, which were transformed into a ranges of ‘art labels’ for BECKS, replacing the traditionional labels on its 330ml bottles, launched at the WORKSHOP flagship store this month (go to p84).

Continuing a long history of collaboration with the fashion label, Reynolds has also created four special edition t-shirt designs for WORKSHOP available exclusively at WORKSHOP stores around New Zealand.

our idea of the ‘perfect cake’ is one you can have AND eat too! JORDAN RONDEL from THE CAKER would like to agree - after all her business thrives on it, baking and delivering perfect custom cakes like the one here to auckland’s sweet toothed fashion elite.

photo by GLENN HUNT text ERIN MATTINGLY

AFTER baking a particularly successful caramelised banana cake, Jordan Rondel realised that her desire to please others through culinary delights and delicacies, was to become more than just a hobby. In January, 2010, as a service to fellow Auckland cake-eaters, Rondel opened a little business called THE CAKER, in which she bakes and delivers one-of-a-kind pastries. An instant hit with designers and PR agencies, her perfect mix of french roots, the love of baking and passion for fashion is proving the best recipe for success! “Fashion is a huge part of my life, and because of this I try to transfer its elements to my craft. My cakes are unusual, specialty treats that are unavailable in your average cake shop; they are not generic or fake in any way. The aesthetic for my cakes is

fairly humble and I try to take the “cute” out of it by playing with ideas of juxtaposition. I like to use skull and dagger embellishments against the whimsically sweet composition of the cake. I also supply gluten free or vegan options and all of my cakes contain as many organic ingredients as possible... My idea of the perfect cake is one that tastes incredible without necessarily looking the part. Pretty but imperfect, dainty and rustic. I like pastel colours, soft, cloud-like frostings, fresh seasonal fruit,

and the little black specks that come from real vanilla, honey, nuts, and spices. The cake in this shot is my ideal cake because it is small enough to feed the four mouths dearest to you, or just yourself, if you so please. It’s a triple layer, gluten free, flour-less, dark chocolate and raspberry cake topped with Grenache, freeze-dried raspberry powder, and goldleaf. It is very rich and you only need a small portion to be satisfied. This is what I envision when I am creating a cake – simple, unrefined deliciousness!”

THE FIRST Hannah-Lee Jade collection ‘Land Of Point’ was officially launched in March 2012 at ‘Frocks on Bikes’ at the NZ Fashion Festival along with other more established local designers, showing again since at the Bizdojo Maker Space. As well as working on her next collection with even more colour and fun, and styling music videos, Hannah will soon be opening her own shop in La Gonda Arcade Krd, stocking underground labels and hosting cool events while planning for future

collaborations ‘with insanely talented others to grow and grow and grow in the most positive creative original way for fashion.’ ‘My perfect outfit from the Hannah-Lee Jade Spring Summer collection “ Land of Point’ would be the purple dying crop top, the fantastic planet plastic jacket and the gingham point pants. In this outfit you would be safe from the forever surprising weather in the most fun way, while revealing the ‘oh so super’ outfit underneath!

The point pants will make your every move have extra groove, the spikes will point out the positives of the day. The ’Land of Point’ collection provides the wearer with the power to state their point with a happily bold and positively creative attitude. In these clothes you can make this world come alive, embracing eccentricity, fun and creatively. My label is here to make it clear that fashion design can be, and in my mind is, an extension of the art world.

from humble beginnings just seven years ago to its now fashionable home smack in the heart of auckland’s ponsonby road, TWO HANDS TATTOO’s STEFAN SINCLAIR has risen as one of the leaders in the recent renaissance in ink, making a mark on the local scene with his perfect aesthetic, artistry and technical nouse - and like many artists, it’s his muse, CLARE that’s inspired his perfect work. photos by GLENN HUNT

“I MET Clare a couple of years back when she asked me to tattoo her. I had this weird feeling straight away that she would be kind of a muse for me, someone I could showcase my best work on, and bounce ideas off. I just drew her what I wanted to do, in the hopes she might like it, and when she came back to get the ink, she let me do what turned out to be one of my favorite tattoos ever -- a crowned hawk. After two sessions on the hawk, I hired her as my assistant and, every other week, I try out new and different things on her. She is the perfect canvas. She, for the most part, lets me do what I want and she understands my aesthetic. “I’ve always taken a lot of inspiration from traditional tattoo themes and maritime culture, and more recently I’ve been really in to the idea of regalia and tattoos worn as badges of honor and merit. This tattoo is a natural progression of all those themes. I also love that it contains my three favorite techniques of dot-shading, whip shading and flat black. A tattoo by definition will never be perfect as it will always be applied by hand and the human body itself is intrinsically imperfect but for me this is pretty damn close.”

There is no such thing as perfection, only degrees of being perfect.. and practice! If that makes perfect, as they say, then 1AM cover star Kiwi model-turned-actress ASTRA MCLAREN’s levels are on the rise with her lead in upcoming film PENNY BLACK, perfectly cast in the part of wayward supermodel Penny. But to what degree does her own background, history and personal experience as a model make this, her first major acting role, seem so totally perfect? BARNEY MCDONALD finds out.

directed by JOE HITCHCOCK, based on a script co-written with FIONA JACKSON, Penny Black is currently being filmed from Auckland to Wellington, with MCLAREN relishing the freedom to apply her considerable life experience to playing a character she insists is nothing like her, except Penny is a model. And a girl. Living the life. A life. “I PLAY A MODEL in the film and i did model for many years,” she deadpans. “But I suppose any role would be just as perfect, because I get to do what I love when I’m acting. “Penny and I couldn’t be more different, I hope,” she continues. “She’s a rather egocentric, supercilious little cow and, granted, she has it quite rough after having her parents pass away then taking care of her younger sister. It takes a special person to bring her back down to earth.” Penny is described as “a supermodel who doesn’t want anything to come between her and fame and fortune, but learns there are other much more important things in life. Coming from a highly consumerist lifestyle, Penny is surprised by some of the unconventional methods of reusing, refusing and recycling she is introduced to.” If you know Astra, it’s clear the only line that comfortably applies to her is the casual phrase about learning important things from life. At the tender age of 26, Astra has travelled far in the journey of life, developing an unmistakable air of wisdom without losing any of her sense of fun and adventure. Perfect qualities for an aspiring actress determined to explore the deeper recesses and layers of human existence. “I was born in Kaitaia Hospital, November 2 1986. My mother and I moved to Auckland when I was too young to remember. “My unsettled childhood consisted of constantly moving house and changing schools (10 in total). I was the only child spawned from both

parents, though they both had older children with whom I never spent time. When I was 13, I decided to move in with my father. “At 15, I started modeling. After leaving both school and home soon after, the owner of Nova Model Agency, Caroline Barley, took me under her wing, housed and tried to mentor me, of which I had no interest in. You could say I was a bit of a ‘problem’ child, managing to get myself into all kinds of trouble, hanging out with ‘bad’ people and being part of a ‘bad’ scene. “So throughout my late teens I partied and traveled (with modeling) all over Asia. At the age of 19 I decided to come back to Auckland. “Acting has been something I’ve wanted to do since I was a little girl, stemming from having to entertain myself as an only(ish) child before I got my first role on Shortland Street when I was six. But I never really took it seriously till the last couple of years. Rene Naufahu, my mentor and agent (who is also an actor and director), has been such an amazing influence over the past few years, since about 2005 when we used to get together once a week as a group and hire a space down at Britomart. He now dedicates most of his week to training actors and knows how to get the best performance out of people. “It’s always been screen acting for me, about being as real as possible without having to be over the top. I know I’ve been through a lot more in my lifetime, so feel I have a lot of experiences to draw from. “I’ve had a few roles in both film and

television, and if I were to choose one over the other it would definitely be film for me. Not blockbusters or even big budget films. If I could act the rest of my life and not even make money out of it I’d be the happiest girl in the world. “I like the kind of roles that are real, where people are actually thinking about real issues or are really taken on a realistic emotional journey while watching the film. I’m not too keen on mainstream films that, depending on the genre, always seem to follow the same formula. They’re so predictable. “The last film I acted in was an American production where I had to play the psychopathic sister of the main character and writer of the film, Shiloh Fernandez. That was challenging and quite different to any character I’ve played before but I still loved it. “The film I’m working on at the moment is Penny Black, an independent feature, written and directed by Joe Hitchcock and co-written and produced by Fiona Jackson. It’s been a fun couple of months, traveling up and down the country filming with an amazing crew. I don’t want it to end. “Since starting the film, I’ve actually become vegan. It’s an issue I feel very strongly about, for moral reasons. I’ve always loved animals so much and place huge importance on the fact they’re sentient beings and that all creatures should be treated equally. I’ve recently left my job in advertising and plan to volunteer in my spare time. I’m not giving all the credit to this film but it definitely has opened my eyes and given me time to think about certain issues that I already knew were there.”
