Carlos Teixeira, diretor do AECCB

Generation at Risk? Classifying generations is something that has happened in the recent past in the history of peoples. Whenever something indelibly marks a particular group with repercussions on their future life, on their way of living and interacting with the world, the baptism of “Lost Generation”, “Great Generation”, “Silent Generation”… in the Portuguese case, “Geração Rasca”. Some of these epithets become part of history, others, as in the case of “Geração Rasca,” are nothing more than media constructs that appear to give colour to movements that fade over time, without leaving deep marks on those who were affected by the events that led to the label. Therefore, talking about “Generation at Risk” to classify children and young people who are in the process of training in 2020 and 2021 is still premature to do so, and we are still at the epicenter of a pandemic crisis that conditions the life of all human beings, regardless of age, sex or race. However, and so that classification does not take place, it is urgent to call on all decision makers, especially those who are responsible for defining strategies/policies to take into account what this confined way of life brings to the development/growth of children and young. In defining the political strategy, we must have a holistic view of the problem, an integrated approach, which considers children and young people as beings of knowledge, affection, emotions, physical and motor skills in the context of evolution and learning. Speaking of responsibilities, we who are at school, the stage of action for the development of the human being as a whole, must always bear in mind, when returning to the new normality, that it is necessary to act in various fields of the education of our children and young people. Yes, it is necessary to have a consistent plan for the recovery/promotion of learning developed or operated in a deficient way through E@D, with particular focus on the most vulnerable groups where the school, the real classroom school, has made a difference in recent years. Yes, it is necessary that the guidelines of the central government allow the promotion of fruitful learning to take time to happen, we will not be able to achieve in three months what should have been done over two school years. Yes, there is a need for the natural time of formative learning, with pedagogical advances and retreats, which makes it possible to win overcoming through self-knowledge, discovering a new world of learning ... as this is vital in the first years of schooling. Yes, it is necessary to have a plan without the formalism inherent in the pragmatic logic, which brings to daily life the emotional relationship between children and young people and between them and adults ... talking, listening, communicating, intervening, being heard, feeling emotionally involved as a being of affection that gives and receives. Yes, it is necessary to have a plan to resume/promote physical activity, either through clubs, or through the encouragement of school/school sports and families so that the right to play on the go is returned to our children and young people, the right to grow with the promotion of knowledge, skills and attitudes. Not losing awareness of how much we all have to do to resume the healthy growth of our children and young people, I am sure that with the youth's own energy, their will to live, framed in the new normality of the nearest times, we will be able to cancel the epithet “Generation at Risk” to focus

The world has changed and brings new opportunities After a 2020 marked by forced confinement, which limited not only everyone's freedom, but also collective development, young people yearn for a future without Covid-19. Their lives and daily life, previously focused on school, university, friendships or sport, were affected by the pandemic and changed overnight.

This generation saw their worlds and dreams turned inside out. Many young people have ceased to be students, athletes or workers to become caregivers for younger siblings or sick family members. Many others stayed indoors or were forced to return to their parents' homes. Still others were left without a job or with no prospect of getting it. The threat of a new crisis of professional opportunities is real, in addition to other aspects (such as exposure to psychological diseases), which makes young people those who are potentially marked in their future by the long-term impact of this pandemic. However, like everything else in this social and public health crisis, neither case is the same. Some young people were more affected than others, depending on personal circumstances, geographic location or the effectiveness of the actions taken to contain the virus. But when I am asked: is this a generation at risk? My answer is no. As much as this generation fears that their lives may be very shaken, I am convinced that they will know how to adapt like others in the past. Looking at history, all generations of young people have gone through difficulties and problems, some more difficult than others, but they always knew how to find the paths that would lead them to success and happiness. This generation will not be different, not least because it is better prepared and has already demonstrated a unique capacity for overcoming. We must not forget that, with adversity, opportunities also arise. Our young people, I am sure, will know how to grab them. The world has changed, today it is different, and it may be more and more of them. Since the first hour, the Famalicão City Council has supported the construction of the future that each young person wants for him/herself. Municipal policies have been designed in this sense, especially instrumental, so that they can explore the path they chose and not what was imposed on them. I defend, as City Councilor for Youth, this institutional closeness and complicity and I will always be available to collaborate and promote policies that correspond to what young people claim as fundamental for their individual and collective development. prioritário para a manutenção da vida no nosso planeta, mesmo quando surgem crises sanitárias e humanitárias como a que temos vindo a experienciar.

Economist José Roquette was a pioneer in terms of sustainable development in Portugal. The students of the European Club even consider that he anticipated the European Ecological Pact due to his work at Herdade do Esporão over more than four decades. Roquette bet especially on building a culture of environmental responsibility that resulted in the implementation of sustainable and innovative agricultural practices. He was also concerned with making the population aware of environmental issues. These actions were recognized 2 years ago in London, with the delivery of the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ prize to this gentleman with a truly enviable resume. The decorated by Jorge Sampaio with the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit considers that the environmental measures he adopted can translate into economic recovery if applied to the general population. With this, he leaves a very important alert for kids and adults: the Earth is, for now, the only habitat of the human species, which makes it a space that we must preserve and respect. Rita Santos, a true activist and enthusiast on environmental issues, warned of the negative impact of the exploitation of non-renewable energies in Portugal and Europe. She also left a pertinent criticism to the financial support that these industries receive, presenting as a solution a change in the financing systems, which, in her view, must urgently support renewable energy options that constitute more sustainable alternatives. Paulo Figueiredo, a former student of the Camilo Castelo Branco School Group, ambassador of the European Parliament Ambassador School and member of the European Club, also contributed with his words in this V European Tea. Leaving Vila Nova de Famalicão to Lisbon, it was impossible for the IST student to fail to notice the levels of air and land pollution that the capital has. These prove to be exponentially superior to those of his hometown, which put him on alert regarding the urgency in making climate decisions. It was this environmental concern that led him to be one of the founders of the Environmental Nucleus of the IST, where he studies Physical and Technological Engineering. The young man also leaves an appeal to the citizenship of young Camillians, reinforcing

European Tea - "European Ecological Pact: Catalyst for Economic Recovery" This time, the tradition of tea and hot cakes was not present in this evening, led by the ambitious European Ecological Pact. This conversation, in an informal context and in an accessible language, took place at the Zoom meeting organized by the young ambassadors of the European Parliament on January 15th. This is one of the many “European teas” that take place over the weeks at meetings organized by students and proactive teachers from the European Club of the School Group Camilo Castelo Branco, in V. N. de Famalicão. These young people, aware of the importance of civic intervention in the life of Europe, counted on the participation of 4 speakers familiar with the environmental issue: MEP Isabel Carvalhais, economist José Roquette and students of the Physics and Technological Engineering course, members of the nucleus IST environmentalist, Rita Santos and Paulo Figueiredo. In her speech, Isabel Carvalhais explained, in a simple and didactic way, the importance of this “roadmap” to make the European economy more just, sustainable and coherent at an ecological and social level. Her career, closely linked to teaching, has enabled her to present several concrete actions that allow us, in the day-to-day life of ordinary people, to achieve the ambitious objectives of this pact. All of this without forgetting the issue of social inclusion, which represents a major concern for the PhD in Sociology. The MEP also warned of a dangerous thought that has been growing in the European population due to the current pandemic: the idea that the environment is not a priority for the national and European community.

However, she made it clear that halting environmental degradation is an urgent and priority objective for the maintenance of life on our planet, even when health and humanitarian crises such as the one we have been experiencing arise. JORNAL EUROPEU AECCB

the importance of voting so that these adults of the future can have their voices heard and their concerns resolved. He also suggests a dialogue between young people and political representatives, so that projects such as the European Ecological Pact can continue to emerge, which means, in fact, a breakthrough in terms of health care on the planet. This European Tea, not only for its content of high importance for the present time, but also for the beautiful cultural moments provided by the creative students who were present here, is marked in the history of the EP and AECCB Ambassador School. The knowledge transmitted here will be a key tool in the development of the next projects of the European Club, which promises to continue to innovate and surprise both in the school community, as well as in the country and in Europe.

Latvia, the Netherlands and Greece to the Camillian meeting. Commemorated on January 27, this day instituted by the United Nations marks the 76th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp in 1945. As the UN General Assembly stresses, this date is also intended to promote teaching on the Holocaust , so as not to forget the atrocities of the past and to prevent the risk of future genocides. It was through poetry that the invited Greek teachers and students expressed the scars left by the suffering that the Holocaust caused in this nation. The personal testimony of a Dutch teacher, whose family witnessed the asphyxiating reality of the Holocaust, also left the participants glued to the screen of this Zoom conference. In an era of exponential rise of conservative and neo-Nazi parties, the words of the European Parliament Young Ambassadors call for the fight against disinformation and against racism and xenophobia. Marked by strong emotions, the interventions of Portuguese students did not bring only historical facts and true accounts of survivors. These little Europeans brought words filled with compassion and a strong desire to bring justice to these citizens stripped of their humanity, their life and their identity. The concern and mourning left in each word (and in each silence) squeezed the hearts of the public, national and international, who shared with tears the inspiration and determination of these young people to change the world and humanity. The message left by these students is clear: "It happened, so it can happen again". As such, it is undoubtedly essential to remember the horrors of the Holocaust so that massacres like this black cloud that hangs over European history will not be repeated in the future, because “A fool is one who does, or does not do, what history has already warned. ” So, today more than ever, let us remember. Camilo no CERN

These advances by the largest European research unit materialize in the development of new technologies in the field of medicine, such as the detection of cancerous metastases, whose technology was developed at CERN in a positron emission tomography (PET) system, and in industry, in the food and automotive sectors. Giving two more small examples of technology created at CERN and that are part of our day-to-day, the first was the creation of the World Wide Web, where the first website was born on August 6, 1991, in a small office of the engineer English Tim Berners-Lee and the second are the touch screens that we use on countless devices. According to the teachers responsible for the visit, the realization of this “provided direct contact with one of the most prominent Portuguese researchers working at CERN and put students in contact with the scientific research environment, namely with the activities that are developed in the experimental physics of particles and made it possible to broaden scientific and technological knowledge ”. This activity was extremely important from a social point of view, as it contributed to a better understanding of the world around us and to the development and training of young people as citizens, contributing to an informed and conscious professional choice. On the other hand, it represented a huge contribution at academic and scientific level, as pre-university students. The students carried out the evaluation of the activity anonymously and gave excellent feedback regarding the way it took place, highlighting the level of the speaker, the information presented and the clarity of the same. Nowadays, when a country's wealth comes increasingly from knowledge, encouraging and supporting future talents for science is a must. In science, young people are an inexhaustible source of creativity. Thus, with the realization of this activity, we all continue to build the future of our young people together, in the certainty that tomorrow we will have a better future for everyone.

And it is because of this universality that the UN created the World Radio Day in 2011, which is repeated annually on February 13th with the purpose of making the public and the media aware of its importance and of improving international cooperation between all the broadcasters. Not being able to leave this day blank, the European Club of the AECCB organized live for the social network Facebook an interview to a true enthusiast and expert by this means of communication. Arcindo Guimarães - whose voice we recognize from documentaries, television programs and advertising spots - is the director of FamaRadio's Famalicense station. In addition to radio production, he is one of the precursors of voice off in Portugal, by the company VozOn. On a date dedicated to an invention as old as this, one could not help but question its popularity among young people. In fact, contrary to what one would expect, the interest of the youngest has been growing markedly, mainly due to online broadcasts and the constant renewal process that the radio undergoes. As the voice of Fama Rádio explained, the first general confinement demonstrated that young people remain connected to their origins, with this age group representing the largest share of the public outside the fm. Despite the slight drop in audiences naturally caused by social isolation, the Famalicense announcer underlines that the total balance has been positive due to a significant transition to digital streaming. He also stressed a relevant point today: the voice of countless speakers continues to rob some of the loneliness of the most isolated spectators on a daily basis. In opposition to what happens in the other social communication channels, Arcindo Guimarães states that the radio has been passing by the time of "fake news" and sensationalism. The high selectivity in terms of information and the smallest number of news items seem to be what makes it so proof against false news. After this unique interview for the AECCB, we could see that, like this broadcast (live), the radio is also very much alive for young people and for the general public, maintaining its versatility and innovating generation after generation.

“International Day of Women and Girls in Science” On December 22, 2015, the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution A/RES/ 70/212, declaring February 11 as the “International Day of Women and Girls in Science”. Through this resolution, the UN recognized the need to reinforce efforts worldwide and repair strategies and actions in order to be able to promote the access of more and more women and girls to the world of science, both in the field of training, education and research, and in the world of work. With the commemoration of this day, the UN intends to reinforce the commitment of all nations to the full and equal access and participation in Science by women and girls. Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls are at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development - of all SDGs. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development explicitly incorporates commitments to eliminate gender inequalities in education and training and to expand women's opportunities for access to Science. Inclusion and equality are the engines of progress, innovation and economic growth. It is up to each one of us and our educational community to ensure the effectiveness of this commitment, holding the leaders accountable, involving us individually and collectively for equality, contributing at the local, national and international level to promote gender equality in access to science Breaking down barriers imposed by gender inequality in access to education and careers in the sciences is a challenge that must be assumed by all. May education inspire young people and make them agents of change. For equality!

TEA T@LKS- 1st Edition Have you got the cup ready? Tea and an attentive ear are mandatory requirements for the most recent Camillian evenings, which promise new guests on Wednesdays at 9 pm. Vítor Tomé, member of Council of Europe projects in the area of Digital Citizenship, debuted the online podium of the European Club with the very current theme of disinformation and its dangers. In May 2020, the European Commission announced that it is registering, daily, more than 2,700 articles on social networks with false or misleading publications related to covid-19. Despite the signing of a digital code of conduct in 2018 by digital giants like Google, Facebook and Mozilla that promised self-regulation of these when it comes to fake news, Thierry Breton says that these efforts “will never be enough” to mitigate them. The European Commissioner for the Internal Market went so far as to say that misinformation is the “disease of the century” and that “more transparency and better effort from online platforms” are needed. Due to his extensive experience in this field, as well as in education, Vítor Tomé was able, over the past night of March 3, to transmit refreshing and innovative information in the area of digital information. The members of the European Club, always with pens and pads ready to learn more and better, made the most of the knowledge transmitted here, getting to know also the numerous educational projects of this researcher in the area of Media Literacy and Journalism. This states that, despite the exponential evolution of technology - which favors the increasingly rapid viralization of fallacious articles - young people will, in the future, be better prepared to fight this “disease of the century”. Thus, these European Tea T@lks started off in the best way: with clear, captivating and enlightening information, leaving all their spectators curious about who will be hosting the next event.

European Money Quiz

DIGITAL FATIGUE: THE BEGINNING OR THE END? Closer and closer to its face-to-face version, European Tea returned to ZOOM on 26 March. The European Parliament Ambassador School felt the need to elucidate the school community for the less obvious by-products of distance learning. They had the help of three prominent speakers - José Manuel Fernandes, Nuno Lobo Antunes and Santana Castilho - who, despite not receiving the courtesy of the original teas, were served with culture and humor by the younger members of the club. Already a veteran of these Camillian sessions, MEP José Manuel Fernandes stressed that COVID-19 came to demonstrate the importance and potential of digital. However, he stressed the difficulties in accessing the internet associated with the lack of territorial, economic and social cohesion. "It is essential that inclusion is a quick reality, as it helps the recovery of member states." There are things that are here to stay, but it is essential to return to the school of affections, visualization and sociability. “The right to disconnect is fundamental to mental health: digital should be at the service of citizens and not the other way around.” The neuro pediatrician Nuno Lobo Antunes presented several solutions in order to help parents and children to overcome this somehow incomprehensible and unexpected phase: being attentive to the signs of help, attention and helping young people in a phase of absence of social experiences . When asked what today's news could add to a true bible about developmental and behavioural disorders - the work “Sentidos”, by his author - the graduate in Medicine from the University of Lisbon says that he would add a chapter with the importance of the internet as a form of communication, saying that it is important not to look at losses, but at what we gain in terms of the learning of the youngest. However, one of the most important school learning is learned outside the classroom: during the breaks to learn the value of friendship and in interaction with others, he says in his intervention. He added that “school must stop being a source of information but should be a source of reflection, teaching young people to think.” Santana Castilho says that we currently suffer from an acute health problem, both political, physical and mental. The current chronicler at the Público newspaper expressed his frank and non-artificial opinion: he sees a society that is totally outdated, contrary to the technological rise. He accuses political and scientific bodies lacking in usefulness about pre-existing data and standards with regard to public health problems, descending to panic-based decision-making, which lead to irrational directions. And he also leaves an impactful reflection, whether the panic generated was more destructive than the deaths suffered? As for education, it reinforces the importance of drawing lessons based on the years 2020 and 2021 that allow a restructuring in teaching. In the opinion of the former UNESCO consultant, this should aim at the integral and humanistic training of men and women, who should be able to use the knowledge congruently. He also took the opportunity to appeal to younger people to invest in health, neuro-motor development, physical exercise and a healthy lifestyle, privileging these areas at the detriment of treating diseases. In a very timely manner, CIED Minho, also present here, listened to the sensitivity with regard to the digital fatigue experienced by this small audience, using a live poll. As a result, it was found that about 92% of respondents consider that the use of electronic devices harms human mental health, confirming the relevance of the issue under discussion. This overly enlightening evening allowed the understanding that this “fatigue” should not be an obstacle to the digital transition, but an alert to the need to design digitalization panoramas capable of offering inspiring opportunities to its users. In this way, social, psychological and physical asphyxiation would be avoided, an essential condition for maintaining, in time of confinement, physical and mental well-being. Carolina Alves

European winner of the European Juvenes Translatores award The Portuguese winner of the prize for young translators from the European Commission in 2020 was "very surprised and happy" with her accomplishment, achieved with the translation from English into Portuguese of a teenager's diary. Speaking to Lusa, Leonor Silva, from Camilo Castelo Branco Secondary School, in Vila Nova de Famalicão, Braga district, also said that she loves English and that her academic dream is to go to Law School. "I heard about the prize yesterday [Wednesday] night, at an online meeting of the school's European Club. I was very surprised, because I was not expecting anything, but at the same time I was also very, very happy," she said. At the age of 17 and attending 12th grade, in the Science and Technology course, Leonor Silva had to translate excerpts from a teenager's diary, in which she, in particular, highlighted "the wonder that is the Schengen area", the free circulation of people and goods. For the immediate future, Leonor hopes to enter in a law course in the next academic year, confessing that it is an area that fascinates her. The Europe Direct Information Center (CIED) Minho also congratulated her for the award, stressing that the Famalicense student "managed to surprise the international judges of the contest for the clarity and creativity" that she demonstrated in her test. "The jurors stated that the notoriety of her writing was evident, which managed to produce the same effect on the reader as the original text, which was in English", he adds. In addition to Leonor Silva, Portugal also received 12 special mentions in the competition in which 86 Portuguese students, aged 17 participated, in a total of 21 schools. One of the special mentions was for Ana Moreira, also from Camilo Castelo Branco Secondary School.

By Petrinja, Croatia On March 8, at 4:00 pm, there was an international online event promoted by the European Club and Ambassador School of the European Parliament of our School Grouping. This activity, which was attended by several schools from different European countries, namely Romania, Latvia and Greece, aimed to support the European Parliament Ambassador School of Petrinja in Croatia, which was severely destroyed due to the earthquake that took pace on 29th December 2020. It was a very interesting event because it allowed our students to speak directly to students in Croatia who are experiencing this difficult experience. The event also counted on the participation and support of MEP Isabel Estrada Carvalhais, as well as students from the 10ºI, 10ºJ and 11ºL. JORNAL EUROPEU AECCB

Research and find your next travel destination. If you're up for a challenge, you could volunteer at your local community. Helping those in need will not only potentially save somebody's life, but will also give you a sense of control and accomplishment and manage your own mental health. Use this time to relax and cool your head, because once in a lifetime you have a chance to save the world in your pyjamas from your bed!

Class team of class A3, Schule am Bienwaldring, Berlin (Germany)

We organise the online work with our pupils mainly via three class padlets (a padlet is a kind of interactive board on the internet): The weekly schedule padlet is structured like a timetable: Here we teachers set the daily tasks, which we then discuss online. The tasks are different - for some tasks the pupils have to take photos or record sounds, draw, paint or write something down. However, many tasks are also linked - so the students have access to different task formats (created with “Learning Apps”, “Teacher made”, “Scratch”, among others), which they can then edit on their own devices. In addition, the weekly schedule padlet also contains explanatory videos, photos, audio recordings, links to websites and to other learning apps. On the homework padlet, students can upload their work results; on the subjects and projects padlet, there are posts on subjects and on current projects, including many materials that were on the homework and weekly schedule padlets and are deleted there before the start of the new week.

By now, we have all been teaching and learning under the conditions of the Corona pandemic for more than a year. After the first shutdown last spring, during which schools in Germany were closed for weeks, there were also weeks when all students were able to come to school again. At the moment, we are - still - in the second shutdown: shortly before Christmas, the schools were completely closed for a second time, since then there are only online classes for most pupils again, apart from individual pupils in the school emergency care. We as a class meet daily at 10 a.m. for online lessons, one teacher is always in the school as part of the emergency care via PC and interactive whiteboard. A prerequisite for participation in the online lessons is, of course, a stable internet connection unfortunately, this is not the case for two pupils. As a substitute, they have the option of coming to school for emergency support. For the others, participation usually works well. They either have a mobile phone or a tablet, and two pupils have borrowed an iPad from the school. As before, the exchange among each other is particularly important in our daily class meetings. We can see and hear each other - at least via video!

Both the work with the padlets and the daily online meetings have become routine for the students and thus give their day a certain structure. Despite all this, we naturally miss the personal contact and social interaction at school. Many pupils - especially the socially disadvantaged - suffer from the current situation, and we too can see it on our pupils that it is about time that they can come back to school. In Germany, schools are therefore currently being opened step by step - despite the tense infection situation. On March 17 our class will therefore also come back to school. For hygiene reasons, we have decided to divide the class into two groups. The first sub-group, consisting of pupils who need transport, will come in the morning; the pupils in our class who can come to school independently will be taught in the afternoon. So that we can still all see each other, we will keep the daily online meeting in an abbreviated form. Of course, we sincerely hope that the lifting of the shutdown here in Germany will not lead to another high increase in the number of infections, so that we will soon only be able to teach online again ...

Acreditação Erasmus+ e Formação do Staff AECCB O Agrupamento de Escolas Camilo Castelo Branco viu aprovada a Acreditação Erasmus AK1 – 2021-2027, no Ensino Escolar. Erasmus+ Accreditation and Training of AECCB Staff The Camilo Castelo Branco School Group saw Erasmus AK1 Accreditation - 2021-2027, approved in School Education. This Erasmus Accreditation is the confirmation that the institution has a strategy for the implementation of mobility activities with high quality standards, based on an institutional plan for European development. Being an accredited institution means being part of a larger project, an idea that aims to develop and improve the education and training system in Europe on a permanent and continuous basis. Accreditation gives the AECCB the opportunity to look at the long-term future with the development of a strategic development plan for the institution, that is, an Erasmus Plan, leaving aside the short-term perspective based on the details of the management of activities. This is further evidence that we continue to Build the Future together, which is why the AECCB is committed to improving, modernizing and internationalizing the education and training system by investing in the training of staff. With a focus on providing training opportunities for human resources in an international context, mobility for training is contemplated, which will continue to affirm the AECCB in the international context of education and training. In this training strategy, we have opened the candidacy for 12 mobilities, four in the form of jobshadowing and eight for the frequency of structured courses. The Project Internationalization Team supports all stages of the application as well as the activities before, during and after mobilities, namely the strategies for disseminating the lessons learned. The ongoing training corresponds to the domains of Inclusion, Equality and Pedagogy and Didactics, according to the strategic lines of the AECCB's Development Plan. It aims to: - Improve the success and learning of all students, implementing methodologies that promote motivation and training and respond to the difficulties encountered. - Deepen the relationship between pedagogical assessment and inclusion to qualify the educational response. - Empower AECCB staff, creating richer conditions for knowing, appropriating, experiencing, monitoring, evaluating and disseminating innovative learning environments. - Articulate and enhance the processes and results of the projects/programs under development at the AECCB AECCB Project Internationalization Team

I´m Gonçalo Bem and I’m 25 years old. I attended Escola Secundária Camilo Castelo Branco from 2007 until 2013. It was a very happy time where I met several fantastic people that helped shaping the person that I am nowadays. During my student journey I have always been interested and focused on exceeding myself not only in the various subjects, but also in many other areas that made me grow as a human being. Acknowledging the importance of being an active and intervening person, I participated in several initiatives, projects and clubs. Throughout the years, I’ve recognized the importance of acquiring relationship skills with oneself, with others and with the world, in a process of developing attitudes, values and dispositions. This constitutes the basis of successful lifelong learning and an autonomous, conscious citizenship. After completing high school, I went to medical school at Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar in Porto. There, I spent six years learning the basis of medicine in order to accomplish my dream of becoming a medical doctor. I finished my master's degree in 2019 and the following year I went to the Hospital Nossa Senhora da Oliveira in Guimarães, as an internal doctor. Currently, I’m starting the first of five years of my medical internship in Anesthesiology at the Instituto Português de Oncologia (Porto) and Hospital de S. João. So far, I have been very proud of everything I’ve accomplished and everyday I’m thankful for all the opportunities that have brought me where I am now.

QUE É FEITO DE TI?

My name is Diogo Yang, I’m 21 years old and studied at Escola Secundária Camilo Castelo Branco a few years ago. In 2017 I graduated from High School and was already aiming towards my lifelong dream of becoming an Airline Transport Pilot. In November of that same year, I started my training at an international aviation academy where I had the pleasure to meet lots of new friends from different nationalities. There were people from Spain, Mauritius, Italy, Brazil, Netherlands, UK and France. At that moment I knew that all those years learning English would come into practice, since the course was fully taught in English and we had to know it well so that we could understand everything that was being explained to us and exchange ideas among us.It took me 3 years of hard work, energy drinks and non-stop studying for the exams and flights, nothing compared to what I had ever done before but it did pay off at the end. Now I am officially a Commercial Pilot working hard to find his first job in the aviation industry.Unfortunately, COVID19 struck us in the most unexpected manner, but we have been taught by our teachers not to give up on the first obstacle. That said I am currently doing food deliveries full-time and studying to keep proficient in the aviation sector and be prepared to apply for the Airlines once they start recruiting again.“Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning how to dance in the rain.” Vivian Greene

Diogo Yang Diogo Yang

Bem hajam!

I was born on December 29th, 1973 and I am from the municipality and parish of Vila Nova de Famalicão. I am married and the father of two children.I did my secondary schooling path at Escola Camilo Castelo Branco. It was here that I consolidated my true friendships, even today they are my best friends. It was at this school that I met excellent teachers, who marked me throughout the training course and assistants that I still haven’t forgotten. As a result of having belonged to the Students' Association for 4 academic years, it was a privilege to have worked closely with a fantastic School Director, namely with the President at the time, Teacher Carneiro, on whose behalf I personally greet all current and past teachers, staff and students. For all these reasons, studying at Camilo Castelo Branco, more than a landmark, was a pride and a reference for life. After high school I graduated in Human Resources Management and did a post-graduate degree in Organizational Behaviour at the University of Minho. Most recently I obtained a Master's degree in Economics and Innovation Management from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto. In my professional life I worked 16 years at the Technological Center of the Textile and Clothing Industries of Portugal - CITEVE, where I was Director of Human Resources, Training and Entrepreneurship.

In truth, it wasn't really a newspaper, but rather a novelette - inspired by a character from the many Brazilian soap operas that Portuguese television used to broadcast at dinner time in the eighties which told the daily adventures of various characters from my childhood, who still live in my imagination. I was also a student at the Camilo Castelo Branco Secondary School, where I was part of the first class of the Journalism course at the beginning of the nineties (now, I

Besides being a proud “famalicense”, where else could I study if not in the school named after our magnificent novelist Camilo Castelo Branco? At the age of 17, still as a student of Camilo, I started my career as an announcer at Cidade Hoje radio. I'm currently a journalist for Sport TV (it's been 13 years), but I still love radio and writing, so much so that I ended up editing my first book in 2019 "Para onde o destino nos levar" - a novel that starts in Famalicão and ends in the far-off Bermuda Islands.

My name is André Carvalho, I am 26 years old and I was a student of the Camilo Castelo Branco Secondary School from 2005 to 2011. The quality in the education and instruction of the School prepared me for the challenges that were to come throughout my academic and professional life. My path was Science oriented, but undoubtedly, Maths was the subject that most aroused my curiosity. For that reason, in 2011, I started to attend a degree in Mathematics at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, which I finished in 2014. The pleasure I had in studying Mathematics grew even more during the course and so I continued my studies, having completed my Master’s degree in Mathematics in 2016. When I finished this cycle of studies, I started working at Sonae as an analyst for about two years. During part of that time I was also a professor of Biostatistics at The School of Health. I have also worked at i2S, a company which develops software for insurance companies, also as an analyst, for most of 2019. At the end of that year, I felt that my scientific journey was still to be completed and so I returned to the academy. I am currently pursuing a PhD in Mathematics with a research grant at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, which allows me to fulfill my dream of doing research in Mathematics, which is something I aspire to do for my whole life. My name is Ana Filipa Costa, I am 29 years old, I am the director of ARTIS – Academia de Bailado de Vila Nova de Famalicão and a teacher of Classical Ballet.Until the 12th grade I studied in Vila Nova de Famalicão and throughout my academic journey I was always a very active and interested student. I participated in all possible activities, even managing to reach some national finals: Chemistry Olympics and Mega Sprint. I finished my secondary education in 2009 at Camilo Castelo Branco Secondary school with an average of 18.2 and entered an Integrated Master’s in Veterinary Medicine at UTAD - University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro. In parallel with school, I always had many extracurricular activities, such as, swimming, hockey, piano lessons, theater, jazz dance, but it was classical ballet that I loved the most. When I entered university, I enrolled in a ballet school in the area and, on Saturday, I also had ballet classes in Famalicão. Once again, my agenda was always filled. Not only was I studying Veterinary Medicine and enrolled in two dance schools, but I was also the president of the Veterinary Year Committee and was responsible for an animal feeding program (Hills) at UTAD. I loved studying veterinary medicine and did not see another professional future ahead of me. Ballet was "just" a passion. However, life takes many turns and, in 2013, I was invited to teach ballet classes in Famalicão and quickly fell in love with teaching. I finished my master’s degree, was a trainee at the Veterinary Hospital of Baixo Vouga and defended my master's dissertation. However, on that same day I said goodbye to a veterinarian career. I continued to teach, and I was certified internationally by IDTA (International Dance Teachers’ Association) as a teacher of Classical Ballet with 96 points out of 100. In September 2018, I opened ARTIS - Academia de Bailado, where I continue to teach today.

JORNAL EUROPEU AECCB

52

O nexo a que me refiro é outro.

The nature and sustainability of our future In a time marked by an unprecedented pandemic, with social and economic consequences already well visible and others still unknown, and with impacts on the physical, emotional and relational health of people to a large extent yet to be assessed, talking about an environmental crisis can today seem extemporaneous and less urgent. However, it is the COVI-19 pandemic itself that also puts the focus on the environmental crisis, contributing, albeit in a distorted way, to demonstrate the sharpness of the environmental crisis, and the need not to deviate from an urgent action plan that puts us as a society, on a path that stops the environmental crisis, that reconciles us with nature, that reverses our losses of biodiversity, and that safeguards the future of our generation and those that will succeed us. The link I refer to between the pandemic and the environmental crisis, has nothing to do with certain arguments that at the beginning wanted to affirm the positive impact of the confinements on nature, even illustrating it here and there with false news about swans and other birds returning to the suddenly almost crystal clear waters of the Venice canals. Just as if the decrease in human presence was the panacea for the environmental crisis. In fact, it is important to be cautious with what these arguments support, since in their support may be a nativist-naturalist vision very close to eco-fascism, in which the Global South of poor and populous nations, emerges as the space of the excessive population that consumes and it destroys the Earth's resources, the geography of waste, the hemisphere, in short, the environmental crisis. JORNAL EUROPEU AECCB

54

The connection I am referring to is another. Rather, it refers to the way in which our sudden (understandable and legitimate) need for protection has further increased the pressure on the environment. In other words, the extreme need to protect ourselves and fight the pandemic, forced us to incorporate millions and millions of new disposable devices in our daily lives. Perhaps we can say that this is the environmental price to pay to protect ourselves from a powerful virus, while fine-tuning our war tactics until we can eliminate or at least control it. But if this environmental price results from an undeniable global public health emergency, many other environmental prices have resulted only from consumption options, from ways of organizing our life in society, and from the insistence on a linear economy model, which generation after generation has inculcated us with the false idea of an infinite availability of Nature to accumulate and digest the errors of our options. Think of disposable and single-use plastics that have been present in our daily lives for decades: straws, cotton buds, cigarette butts, coffee cups, plastic bags ... They are objects that pass between a few seconds to a few minutes in our hands and soon end up be part of the approximately 80% of land-based detritus that lies on beaches, in coastal areas, and, even more seriously, on the bottom of the seas. In fact, and in order to be aware of the seriousness of the problem, it is estimated that 70% of all marine litter (terrestrial and non-terrestrial, more and less degradable, of any type of material and size) released into the sea, is deposited on the seabed, so it is not visible to our eyes. On the other hand, the accumulated masses of garbage that we see floating on the marine surface represent only 1% of the plastic debris that is roaming the seas.

ARTIGO

And do not think that the drama of plastics in the seas is a distant phenomenon, occurring somewhere on the shores of Southwest Asian countries. Just look at what is happening so close, in the Mediterranean Sea, considered one of the most polluted seas in the world. In this sea alone, it is estimated that 730 tons of waste are dumped daily. According to a June 2019 World Wildlife Fund (WWF) report, approximately 11,200 tonnes of plastic dumped annually into nature ends up in the Mediterranean Sea in an amount equivalent to 66,000 garbage collection vehicles. . Also, microplastics reach impressive levels of concentration there, with 1.25 million fragments per km2, representing about 280 billion floating microplastics.

Seas and oceans are essential to life, and your health is therefore vital if they are to ensure their ability to absorb CO2 and produce oxygen. So let us think about what can happen if we continue to regard the seas and oceans not as a source of life (and of sustenance, of food!) but as the gigantic yard of the spoils of our consumption. We need urgent action to reduce this brutal impact on the oceans, and it is in this sense that we find important instruments in the European legal order such as the Directive on single-use plastics (Directive (EU) 2019/904 of the European Parliament and of the Council). This directive should be transposed into national legislation by July this year, despite the fact that the pandemic has forced a slowdown of some measures that were already being considered, such as the ban on the use and availability of single-use plastic crockery in restoration in Portugal, which would start on March 31 of this year, but which was postponed due to the negative impact of the pandemic. This directive, meanwhile reinforced in its message by the most recent European Parliament Resolution on the impact of marine litter on fisheries (P9_TA (2021) 0096), adopted in the plenary on 25 March, will certainly not be a panacea for the ills already caused, but it is an important instrument in the transition to a circular economy model that removes the limelight from the disposable and inaugurates new production, distribution and consumption behaviors that are more sustainable and friendly to Nature.

JORNAL EUROPEU AECCB

São os trabalhadores, as pequenas empresas. São as oportunidades para os jovens. É a solidariedade em tempos de crise.” Assim, a UE espera proporcionar a possibilidade aos líderes políticos de construir uma Europa que seja, de facto, à semelhança de todos os Europeus e que evite injustiças sociais como as que temos vindo a assistir atualmente. The European Union needs the implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights If we want a European Union (EU) based on human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including the rights of people belonging to minorities, as indicated in Article 1 of EU Treaty, we cannot overlook the importance of implementing the European Pillar of Social Rights (Pillar). Since the beginning of the European project, the EU has evolved at a considerable pace towards the deepening of Community policies and its importance for European society. From a commercial integration, the project quickly evolved towards a multi-level economic integration that promoted the possibility of implementing some of the most well-known European policies, such as the example of the Schengen Agreement or the creation of the single EURO currency. Despite all European achievements, it is important to combine the social dimension with the European project so that we can achieve a real “Union” among all Europeans. Despite this notable advance, it appears that social injustices prevail in the European economic zone. For example, not all Europeans have access to a universal health system that allows them to access the most basic services; not all Europeans have the possibility of earning a minimum wage in the profession they practice, thus allowing for abuse by employers; and, not all Europeans have the same conditions when applying for a particular job. These social injustices completely distort the most elementary principles of European treaties and the principles of Human Rights, and therefore fair alternatives must be eliminated and promoted. The Pillar is the ideal answer to advance this idea of a “more just, equitable and inclusive Europe”. It is the first set of social rights proclaimed by the EU institutions since the Charter of Fundamental Rights in 2000. The objective of the Pillar is to give citizens new social rights that are more effective in their daily lives. This is because not all EU Member States (MS) have identical social and labour legislation. This lack of European social harmonization leads to several economic (as is the case with social dumping) and social asymmetries that must be corrected. Thus, the Pillar has the possibility of introducing greater social justice into European society, with an emphasis on the defense and promotion of equality; ensuring fair working conditions; and finally, protection and social inclusion. Among the 20 objectives expressed in the Pillar, are included, namely, equal opportunities, ensuring a fair minimum wage for workers, social protection, or access to essential services. The rights and principles described are intended to have a positive impact on people's lives and define the EU's vision of what society should be, and what an example we want to pass on to the world. It should be noted that most social skills are confined to MS, so the EU is only responsible for providing guidance and incentives so that important issues like this remain in the work plan of European top leaders. Portugal has been an important driver for the pursuit of this objective, emphasizing the importance of implementing the Pillar at European level, and during the current rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, Portugal has pledged to hold a Social Summit, in Porto, to allow Heads of State and several European social partners can approach and speak openly on this topic. As Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, says, “Europe is the people. It's the workers, the small businesses. These are opportunities for young people. It is solidarity in times of crisis. ” Thus, the EU hopes to provide political leaders with the opportunity to build a Europe that is, in fact, like all Europeans and that avoids social injustices like the ones we have been witnessing today. Portugal e a presidência do Conselho da União Europeia Alice Cunha, Universidade Nova de Lisboa 2021 é um ano importante para Portugal no que diz respeito à sua participação na União Europeia (UE). Primeiro, porque completa 35 anos como Estado-membro, o que confere ao país um estatuto de maturidade acerca da integração europeia. Segundo, porque exerce, neste primeiro semestre e pela quarta vez, a presidência rotativa do Conselho da UE, cargo de grande responsabilidade, notoriedade mas também de escrutínio. O Conselho é uma das sete instituições da UE, aquela que representa os governos de cada país, sendo responsável pela aprovação de legislação e pela coordenação de políticas. O Conselho é o principal órgão de decisão da UE e a sua presidência é exercida rotativamente pelos Estados da UE, por um período de seis meses. Convém não confundir esta instituição com outra com um nome semelhante – o Conselho Europeu –, responsável por definir a agenda política da UE. Portugal já exerceu a presidência do Conselho da UE em três momentos distintos (nos anos de 1992, 2000 e 2007), da vida política nacional e da construção europeia, nos quais apostou em diferentes prioridades. No histórico das presidências portuguesas existem marcos assinaláveis, como a aprovação da Estratégia de Lisboa, em 2000, e do Tratado de Lisboa, em 2007, e a realização de várias cimeiras internacionais entre a UE e África, Brasil, China e Índia. Com um intervalo de 14 anos em relação à presidência anterior, após a crise económica e financeira de 2010-2014, depois da saída do Reino Unido da UE, e em pleno contexto pandémico da Covid-19, o país volta a exercer o cargo. Durante o semestre janeiro-junho de 2021, Portugal preside às reuniões a todos os níveis no Conselho, representa-o nas relações com as outras instituições da UE, assegurando a continuidade dos trabalhos que herdou da Alemanha e que passará à Eslovénia, o chamado “trio GPS” (do acrónimo em inglês “Germany, Portugal, Slovenia”), com um programa conjunto para 18 meses. Como nenhum Estado ou organização é imune ao atual contexto pandémico, no programa desta presidência portuguesa, a uma agenda bastante abrangente em linha com as atuais prioridades europeias, juntam-se medidas de saúde, de defesa de um sistema de gestão de crises europeu e de recuperação da economia, com uma dupla preocupação: o combate à pandemia combinado com a recuperação económica. Além disso, a vertente social também ocupa um papel importante, com o estandarte da implementação do Pilar Europeu dos Direitos Sociais, para o qual se espera um novo ímpeto político na Cimeira Social, prevista para maio no Porto. Estima-se que esta Cimeira, a ser bemsucedida, possa ser o marco distintivo desta presidência. O objetivo deste Pilar é conferir aos cidadãos europeus novos direitos, com base em 20 princípios fundamentais, de entre os quais constam a educação, formação e aprendizagem ao longo da vida,o salário justo, a proteção social e o equilíbrio entre a vida profissional e a vida privada. Sob o lema “Tempo de agir: por uma recuperação justa, verde e digital”, os cinco eixos prioritários da presidência incluem: - uma Europa Resiliente, que alivie os efeitos da crise pandémica, que inicie a implementação do orçamento de longo prazo da UE, o Quadro Financeiro Plurianual 2021-2027, e do fundo de recuperação “Next Generation EU”, bem como promova a proteção dos cidadãos europeus e a defesa do Estado de direito, da democracia e das liberdades fundamentais;

- uma Europa Social, que reforce o Modelo Social Europeu, combata a pobreza, a exclusão social e as desigualdades; - uma Europa Verde, que promova o Pacto Ecológico Europeu e o Pacto Europeu para o Clima, e aposte na economia azul e no uso sustentável dos recursos dos oceanos; - uma Europa Digital, que acelere a transição digital inclusiva, implemente as melhores práticas digitais na Administração Pública, e desenvolva o conceito de Democracia Digital; - e, finalmente, uma Europa Global, que reforce o papel da Europa no mundo, na cooperação internacional e no multilateralismo, ao mesmo tempo que dinamiza o relacionamento com África e a Índia, e confere um novo ímpeto às relações transatlânticas. Na área da Juventude, o Programa da Presidência contempla a promoção das políticas de juventude baseada nos direitos, com especial destaque para a participação dos jovens nos processos de decisão e nas plataformas de governação, de acordo com os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável e com a Estratégia da UE para a Juventude 2019-2027 (“Espaço e Participação para Todos”); bem como destaca a prioridade para o lançamento do Programa Erasmus+ e do Corpo Europeu de Solidariedade. Nesse contexto também, irá decorrer a conferência “Europa e juventude, juventude e Europa: espaço para democracia e participação” e um hackathon sobre participação digital, durante a qual os jovens e partes interessadas irão debater o desenvolvimento e a implementação de políticas de juventude. Todas as ações desta presidência podem ser acompanhadas em: https://www.2021portugal.eu/pt/. Na área da Juventude, a UE continua comprometida, através das suas políticas, em prosseguir o objetivo de que todos os jovens beneficiem das mesmas oportunidades a nível da educação e do emprego, na promoção de um estilo de vida saudável e desportivo, e na participação em programas de voluntariado e na política. Portugal and the Presidency of the Council of the European Union Alice Cunha, Universidade Nova de Lisboa 2021 is an important year for Portugal with regard to its participation in the European Union (EU). First, because it turns 35 as a member state, which gives the country a mature status regarding European integration. Second, because in this first semester and for the fourth time, it holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU, a position of great responsibility, notoriety but also scrutiny. The Council is one of seven EU institutions, the one that represents the governments of each country, and is responsible for passing legislation and coordinating policies. The Council is the EU's main decision-making body and its presidency is held on a rotating basis by EU states for a period of six months. It is important not to confuse this institution with another with a similar name - the European Council - which is responsible for setting the EU's political agenda. Portugal has already held the presidency of the Council of the EU at three different times (in the years 1992, 2000 and 2007), of national political life and of European construction, in which it bet on different priorities. of Lisbon in 2007 and the holding of several international summits between the EU and Africa, Brazil, China and India. With an interval of 14 years in relation to the previous presidency, after the economic and financial crisis of 2010-2014, after the United Kingdom left the EU, and in the full pandemic context of Covid-19, the country returns to the post. During the January-June 2021 semester, Portugal chairs the meetings at all levels in the Council, represents it in relations with the other EU institutions, ensuring the continuity of the work it inherited from Germany and which will pass to Slovenia, the so-called “ trio GPS ”(from the English acronym“ Germany, Portugal, Slovenia ”), with a joint program for 18 months. As no state or organization is immune to the current pandemic context, in the program of this Portuguese presidency, to a very comprehensive agenda in line with current European priorities, health measures, defense of a European crisis management system and economic recovery, with a double concern: combating the pandemic combined with the economic recovery. In addition, the social aspect also plays an important role, with the banner of the implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights, for which a new political impetus is expected at the Social Summit, scheduled for May in Porto. It is estimated that this summit, if successful, may be the hallmark of this presidency. The objective of this Pillar is to give European citizens new rights, based on 20 fundamental principles, among which are education, training and lifelong learning, fair wages, social protection and the balance between working life and private life. Under the motto “Time to act: for a fair, green and digital recovery”, the five priority axes of the presidency include: - a Resilient Europe, which alleviates the effects of the pandemic crisis, which initiates the implementation of the EU's long-term budget, the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027, and the “Next Generation EU” recovery fund, as well as promoting the protection of European citizens and the defense of the rule of law, democracy and fundamental freedoms; - a Social Europe, which reinforces the European Social Model, combats poverty, social exclusion and inequalities;

- a Green Europe, promoting the European Ecological Pact and the European Climate Pact, and focusing on the blue economy and the sustainable use of ocean resources; - a Digital Europe, which accelerates the inclusive digital transition, implements the best digital practices in Public Administration, and develops the concept of Digital Democracy; - and, finally, a Global Europe, which reinforces Europe's role in the world, in international cooperation and multilateralism, at the same time that it strengthens the relationship with Africa and India, and gives a new impetus to transatlantic relations. In the Youth area, the Presidency Program contemplates the promotion of rights-based youth policies, with special emphasis on the participation of young people in decision-making processes and governance platforms, in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals and the Strategy EU Youth 2020-2027 (“Space and Participation for All”); as well as highlights the priority for the launch of the Erasmus+ Program and the European Solidarity Corps. In this context, the conference “Europe and youth, youth and Europe: space for democracy and participation” and a hackathon on digital participation will take place, during which young people and stakeholders will debate the development and implementation of youth policies. All the actions of this presidency can be followed at: https://www.2021portugal.eu/en/. In the area of Youth, the EU remains committed, through its policies, to pursuing the objective that all young people benefit from the same opportunities in terms of education and employment, in promoting a healthy and sporting lifestyle, and in participating in volunteer programs and in politics. An example of the incentive for young people to civic and political participation is the “European Parliament Ambassador School” Program, in which several students from the Camilo Castelo Branco School Group participate and with promising results. World Wide Fund for Nature). JORNAL EUROPEU AECCB

62

Ana Carolina Alves

Generation at risk Mental Illness Problems Many people believe kids these days have it easy and have no complications. But, is it that simple? There is a technological revolution happening right now, the pressure of a capitalistic society and the Covid19 pandemic going on. Surely this must have some sort of impact on the teenagers’ mental health, the generation of people that have still not developed their mind and body to the fullest, the people who are the most vulnerable to changes and problems in their lives.

According to the World Health Organisation, “half of all mental health conditions start by 14 years of age but most cases are undetected and untreated.” It is no secret that these disorders are rapidly becoming more common amongst young people. But what causes these deadly diseases? How should we help someone suffering from mental illness? And how can we prevent it? Not all disorders are the same. The number of people they affect and the symptoms are different. To make a point, globally, an estimated 264 million people are affected by depression. Bipolar disorder affects about 45 million people worldwide, Dementia affects approximately 50 million people and Schizophrenia affects 20 million people. Stress, genetics, nutrition, perinatal infections and exposure to environmental hazards, for example, are contributing factors to mental disorders. Sometimes, even national policies, working conditions and standards of living can be the origin of the cause. Unfortunately, health systems are not yet ready to adequately respond to the burden of mental disorders, leading to a gap between the need for treatment and its provision. Quoting the WHO, “In low- and middle-income countries, between 76% and 85% of people with mental disorders receive no treatment for their disorder.” As stated before, currently, the health systems are incapable of giving proper treatment to everyone in the world. That is why it is important for every individual to try and help the people they see are in need. Just like the Mental Health Foundation says, “When you are aware there is an issue, it is important not to wait,” because you “might lose valuable time in getting them support.” The first thing people often do is talk.

This way, it is possible to understand better what certain individual is going through and what troubles them. To have a proper conversation, it is important to: provide an open and non-judgemental space with no distractions; let them lead the discussion at their own pace, not putting pressure on them to talk about anything they are not ready to; listen carefully; talk about ways of de-stressing and practising self-care; not make assumptions; and ask for help if the problem is serious. Sometimes, instead of dealing with the problems, it is better to prevent them, and there are efforts made to try and stop mental disorders before they emerge. The Mental Health Foundation categorised them and separated them in three groups: · Primary prevention: stopping mental health problems before they start. There are campaigns and mental health literacy programmes whose purpose is to raise awareness to the topic of psychiatric disorders. · Secondary prevention: supporting those at higher risk of experiencing mental health problems. This is the “selective” or “targeted” prevention. There are programmes that support those who have experienced trauma or been victims of hate crime, for example. · Tertiary prevention: helping people living with mental health problems to stay well. These programmes focus on those already affected by mental health problems and aim to reduce symptoms that can be disabling. Now that we know what to do in a situation where someone is feeling troubled, it is time we start taking action. Helping those near us who are in need. Raising awareness through campaigns. Promoting self-care and anti-stigma environments. Now we can start helping this generation at risk!

How many of us have not already received an email from a company or organization we do not know, a telemarketing phone call or even an SMS announcing a promotion, without having requested such contacts or content? With the entry into force of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), in 2016, by means of a European directive, and with the Personal Data Protection Law that came to ensure, in 2019, the legal enforcement of the GDPR in national territory, we have seen the protection of people with regard to their personal data, their circulation and, consequently, better protection of their privacy guaranteed. Let's first look at what personal data is; Personal data is information that can directly or indirectly identify a natural person. Examples include the name and surname, the address, the email, the telephone number, the citizen's card number and the tax identification number, a photo, the IP address of our internet connection, our cultural or social profile and data related to our health. All of this data can be separated by categories, internal, external, historical, financial, social and tracking. The GDPR therefore came to ensure that a company cannot, without our explicit consent or legal basis, use our data. Thus, whoever is processing the data must have a legitimate interest, however people have the right to oppose such treatment, except for situations of compliance with legal or contractual obligations that are imperative. And what is the processing of personal data? It is any operation or set of operations carried out on personal data, with or without automated means, such as the collection, registration, conservation, alteration, recovery, consultation, use, disclosure by transmission, by diffusion or by any other form of availability, comparison or interconnection, as well as limitation, erasure or destruction. It may seem confusing because it is so comprehensive, but in reality it gives the following rights to any EU citizen: The right to access their personal data free of charge. If you believe that your personal data is incorrect, incomplete or inaccurate, you have the right to rectify or complete it. You can also object at any time to the processing of the respective personal data for a specific use. In certain circumstances, you can ask the controller to delete your personal data if it is no longer needed to fulfill the purpose of the processing. The right not to be subject to any decision made solely on the basis of automated processing. In addition to the rights that the GDPR brought to European citizens, it also came to consider some data as sensitive and special and to prohibit the processing of the following: - Medical or health data; - Ethnic or racial origin; - Union affiliation; - Genetic data; - Religious or philosophical beliefs; - Political opinions; - Life and sexual orientation; - Biometric data. We also have specific rules applicable to children: The collection of personal data from children based on consent, for example, to create a social network account or download content, should start by obtaining parental consent, by sending a notification to a parent / guardian. The age up to which a user is considered a child is 13 years old. It should be noted that the internet sites have to inform about their privacy policy, as well as the contacts by the data controller and the information of the competent authority in case of any complaints related to them, and in Portugal the National Commission Data Protection Officer (CNPD) is the competent authority.

No entanto, preocupa-me a saúde mental dos mesmos no futuro próximo. PANDEMIA - YOUNG SPORTS AT RISK? Pedro Afonso interview with António Santos António Santos has been a basketball coach since 1978 and trainer at the National Basketball School. Throughout his technical-sports career, he coordinated several clubs and was district coach at the Porto Basketball Association several times. In this sporting season, in addition to coordinating the technical teams of the training, he is also the coach of the senior team of the Famalicense basketball club, the FAMABASKET. Dear Toni, using your words, in which you consider that more than the curricular issue and honors, the fact that you helped a large part of the young people with whom you worked to achieve their dreams, made you the richest and most medaled person that you could ever be, inside the field or in the competition, you undoubtedly have a vast experience of working and living with young people, over several generations, specifically in training, but above all in all dimensions that involve this practice , which you take as a life project. Therefore, taking into account the unexpected “pandemic” moment that we have been experiencing, for about a year, on a global scale, you agree with the concern expressed by the President of the Olympic Committee of Portugal regarding the future of national sport, which in his opinion is at risk due to the pandemic? Dear Pedro, in my perspective, the initial assessment regarding the future of sports training is being made by the number of registrations from the various federations in relation to the past years. In this context it is worrying, as the number has dropped to less than half.

Thus, the concern of parents, in the face of the news, as well as the costs of registration, leads us to understand this drop in practitioners. Will everything return to normal after this pandemic? I would say it will be difficult, since the human being is an animal of habits and the time we dedicate to what we do, and how we do it, can add us to a screen and consequently to the comfort of our homes and, why not say, to an exaggerated protection on the part of the parents to a greater security, against the outside world. Today, we are witnessing a large number of parents attending training sessions, accompanying everything that is the activity of our young people, not allowing freedom of thought and meeting with themselves. So, I would say that the return can be difficult, yes. But it is largely the fault of adults, as I believe that young people are eager to return to activity and sport. In the specific case of Basketball and its practitioners, in the training levels, what can you tell us and analyze, about the percentage of significant break, of your practice at the federated level? In basketball in particular, I am concerned about the fact that we are going to the 2nd consecutive year without competition in training. The factor of coexistence with others is what makes us like what we do, “playing” is the realization of a goal, emotion, balance and uncertainties. The game provides cognitive, psychomotor, social, mutual help and responsibility development. In this sense, I would say that our young people want to go back and experience all this. But ... there is always a but, the so-called adults. This is my biggest concern. Have government officials or health experts realized that there are no known cases that the virus has affected our young people up to 16 years old? However, I am concerned about their mental health in the near future. Hence to say that they want and will return, now we need this return to be done with affection, fun and with the sensitivity that the return deserves. According to your experience, what effects does this problem have on young practitioners, and until when will we have these unwanted effects? The most evident effects are the return to sports at times that often punish parents. As I already said the fact that today they are involved in most of their children's activities, it will condition the desire that young people have to free themselves from this unwanted control. We live in an age where information reaches us at dizzying speed. Knowledge is getting bigger and faster, so they suffer from SPA (Accelerated Thinking Syndrome) from the book by (Augusto Cury - Anxiety). According to the author, our young people suffer in advance and with this they are often anxious, which on the other hand conditions their decisions, due to the concern that their parents place in extracurricular activities. To say with this, that it is necessary to internalize the idea that we need to put schools in collaboration with local clubs with sports programs at the end of the school day, creating a space between 5pm and 7pm, thus taking advantage of the excellence of their own environment, avoiding the traditional hours that last until 8pm or 9pm. In other words, we should remove the possibility of improving the future of education versus sport from this pandemic. We are already in agreement that sports activity is fundamental for the balance of body versus mind. In your opinion, how can federated sport, in terms of its competitive practice, reinvent itself in the face of the challenges imposed by covid 19? Is the articulation between federated sport and the public school through school sport an added value? I would say that the solution is for the Federations to collaborate more with the school environment, in order to provide them with infrastructures for the practice of the various collective modalities, on the one hand, on the other hand, freeing these spaces to local clubs in order to increase the volume of the pyramid in the competition. Looking at the basketball experience in their homeland, USA, we see colleges and primary schools participating in regional competitions and it is not necessarily the regional Associations that promote these competitions. This type of organization at the base allows the various local clubs to specialize in a single modality, thus avoiding the financial effort in having several modalities, where all struggle to conquer the top, thus creating some constraints within them. If you allow me, I launch an idea/challenge here: The creation, in each city, of an inter-school competition. That is, each school in the city would gather a number of 12 athletes (selection) that in a given weekend, for example, at the end of the school year, would participate in a competition between all and as a main characteristic, the interaction, the meeting with other realities and why not say, get to know the people of your city better. This activity should have the support of the local Chamber, where it could disseminate cultural activities with more emphasis. What is your criticism of the performance of the national government and the European Union itself in relation to this problem, in the sporting field, mainly with the youth and youth training levels? As you can already see, from some of the answers given above, I think it was a huge mistake, because even WHO itself was not always sure about the effect on young people up to 14 years old. All health workers were clear about the level of contagion, zero or almost zero. Months before the virus appeared, schools were looking for ways to remove cell phones and other devices of the kind, as it was, until then, a destabilizing factor in classes. Today, we force our young people to be in front of a screen, almost from morning until the end of the day, we even intend to perform physical activities in this way, taking some risks, related to postures, or even corrections. It follows that we officially live in the technological age, therefore, we need to create different stimuli, to mitigate the short-term effects that will suffer the next generations. I sincerely hope to go back to watching young people without a cell phone, together in any physical space laughing and talking, as well as exchanging hugs and kisses, without this being a rarity. The economic factor is an influencer of all sporting activity, mainly at the level of clubs, and as a result of its professionals who carry out their activity. Do you fear that there will be a “stampede” in this professional area? If quick action is not taken, we will start by losing clubs, especially those that do not have their own facilities and need funds for rent and other expenses associated with them. Starting with this return, as we do not yet know if schools will or will not facilitate the occupation of their pavilions. We know that one of the sources of income nowadays is the parents' contribution and some sponsors, which are becoming less and less. So if the school community in collaboration with the local authorities and the local council does not facilitate the occupation of spaces, we already have the first problem that will be the extinction of small clubs. In addition, professionals from various sports come, since the reality of national sport is that our coaches need to accumulate occupations in order to support themselves. It is clear that professionalism in our country is only for an elite, and that is in football and recently in futsal, a modality that has come to take away spaces that are already scarce in the pavilions. Are these professionals going to turn their backs? I do not think so. The small clubs grew with the dedication and commitment of the so-called “carolas” who were hurting themselves to see their projects grow, in small neighborhoods and villages. I believe that there will always be people able to continue. But I would like to appeal to political leaders, who, from the top of their positions, forgot their origin and the importance that their teachers and technicians had in their education and knowledge that brought them here. These will always be to blame for poor literacy and less healthy options taken by their people. Thank you Toni, it was a pleasure to chat with you. Well done for your participation in the AECCB European Journal, best wishes for success in your activity and life project. A hug! Thanks Pedro. I was very honored by this sharing, because I hope it will be useful in some way for the future of our young people and in particular the sport that brought me to you, which is basketball. Much success to all. Hug JORNAL EUROPEU AECCB

A generation at risk With each generation, change becomes faster and faster and the differences in the world become more and more noticeable. But where is all this change leading to? What impact can this generation have in the future, and what is its future? Is there something putting it at risk or are we living Humanity’s golden age? That’s what I want to explore. This is my critique to Humankind. This world we live in is pretty amazing. It’s incredible how diverse it is and how life flourishes and thrives. During centuries, biologists have studied life and the more we know about it the more we ask ourselves the way humans fit in this organization of the living world. However, most do not like to think of Humankind like a simple animal species. We see ourselves as superior, almost divine. Higher than every other living thing, the incarnation of perfection. And so, as we have developed in technology and thinking, we have separated ourselves from the natural world where we came from. And just like the child that abandons the family, we forget that we can still harm Nature. Of course, if we say it like this, it’s hard to draw a connection between the new hightech generation and the wild archaic old world. But I’ll get there in a minute. First let’s talk about The Age of Discoveries.

JORNAL EUROPEU AECCB

This may seem random, but this was the breaking point of a radical and quick change in the world. As Portuguese, Spanish, English, as well as ships from many other nationalities, explored the world, they took with them everything they needed to the trip: the ship, workmen, guns, cannons, and all sort of animals. Horses, pigs, goats, hounds travelled to the new worlds while potatoes, and turkeys, and all the new exciting things where shipped to the Old Europe. That was when it started. One example is the Dodo. You know what a dodo is? A strange bird. Couldn’t fly, looked like a pigeon the size of a turkey with a not very intelligent looking face. Unfortunately for the dodo, its meat was very appreciated by the Dutchmen. And also the European pigs, dogs and cats didn’t want to share the space available on the island with the slow fat bird. And the dodo went extinct. There are many other examples of living forms that went extinct or almost because of the colonization, after all, the commanders of the ships and the nobles, and priests, and merchants had other things to worry about. Let’s skip a few centuries in time, to the Industrial Revolution. Big thing. Lots of jobs, massive production, developing industry, making money. A big step in the direction of the future. And also a step in the direction of the end. People´s way of life was improved with some major inventions like the train. That was good. But it started polluting the air. Breathing problems would become more and more common. Since then, slowly but surely, the world got warmer and warmer. Not the good kind of cosy comfortable warm, the insupportable heat and the miserable cold. But the consequences took their time to appear. We were choking ourselves and we didn’t know it.

A few centuries later, in the long XX century, scientific discoveries became way more frequent. We finally had the technology to study everything we wanted. After World War II, the new improved planes and submarines allowed scientists to explore remote unknown places, from tight jungles to deep oceans and our knowledge about the world around us just increased. And finally, we realized it. Not so long ago. We saw the future. We saw darkness written in pages reporting numbers of specimens, or carbon in the atmosphere. After millennia dreaming of the end of time, we caught it in front of us. No angry beasts, no demons, no hell fire. Just a slow painful end. But I’ll get there. How are things now? The number of species that go extinct grows by the day and the numbers of the ones that remain are falling. With the populations declining the living world is entering a phase of instability. Many ecosystems have already fallen and other ones are following. An example, with the prohibition of hunting for sport during Covid-19 some regions in Portugal started having problems with wild boars. This shows how much we interfered, without wild predators the boar population went out of control. The massive production of animals like cows and pigs for meat is not just unhealthy for humans and for animals, but it spends lots of good water, space and food. There is a reason why there are so little top predators. In the Serengeti, for each top predator, like a lion or a leopard, there are one hundred grass eaters. We basically eat as much meat as them and the world simply cannot sustain a population that large of big carnivores. Big fires, floods, the rising of the sea level and extreme climatic phenomena, like hurricanes, are about to become more frequent and more violent.

JORNAL EUROPEU AECCB

The medium temperature is increasing, and global warming is probably the most serious of the problems. All five massive extinctions at some point had a global warming. Sixty-five million years ago, after a great winter the temperatures raised. Two hundred million years ago the events that opened up to the later dominance of the dinosaurs were marked by a global warming and the collapse of the food chains. These are the treats to the modern society. We may very well be the last healthy generation of human beings. Soon the temperatures will rise to a point where it’s harmful to the human body. The extinction of species leads to the collapse of the food chains, and we are on top. We are dependent on the rest of the world, if the natural world falls, we fall with it. The excess of agriculture will make the soils weak in nutrients and nothing will grow on them. Then we won’t have enough food to eat or to feed the animals. People all around the world will starve and die. The most balanced period in the History of the planet will turn into a painful mess. Finally, the end of days will come. After so many stories, so many victories and achievements the Human Empire comes to an end, and life on this planet comes with it… Except that this part is a lie! In our arrogance we say that we may cause the end of life, that’s not true. Even in a nuclear winter, somewhere buried in the ice or deep down in the oceans near to volcanic vents, life will go on. Non stopping. Sure, the world will be different, but, in the end, in our planet’s History, the Human chapter will be no more that the blink of an eye. But it doesn’t need to be like this. We can keep fighting against the odds and, who knows, find a balance with our Mother.

Green spaces, healthy diets based on vegetables, farming in cities, regulating carbon emissions to the atmosphere… there are many things we can do. Create protected areas, reintroduce endangered species back to their habitats, and protect the food chains we rely on. Guarantee biodiversity and teach the youngest how to be one with the world. We have the technology, it´s up to us… up to this generation and the previous one, to choose to use them. Or we can choke to death by our own hands.

Contudo, as consequências demoraram a aparecer.

“Cancel Culture”: in my opinion, an imminent danger that my generation has to face, a theme that is increasingly present in everyday life, and more and more frightening in the way it is used for censorship or removal of oppositions by various reasons. This concept emerged with the Internet age, propagated by the launch of social networks like Twitter, where there often seems to be no limit to what can be said. When I talk about silencing the opposition or those who disagree with a certain opinion, I mean for example the case of JK Rowling, who admitted that she was not completely in favor of the participation of transsexual athletes in women's competitions, which led to her being seen as transphobic for sharing an opinion different from what is now politically correct. There are several cases of celebrities or people in high importance positions who suffer some kind of unwarranted repercussion for something they have done or said in the past, regardless of the context in which these actions took place. Tweets or Facebook posts are often criticized where a certain celebrity makes a joke of black humor, even though it is not a controversial topic at the time of writing. Ten years after the publication of a certain comment, someone has the idea of applying a current value judgment to a post made in a period where that same value judgment was not valid or accepted, creating a controversy that often leads to cancellation and ostracization of the person who wrote it. Are we going to use this culture of cancellation in order to denounce and expose morally corrupt crimes and behaviors, or are we going to use it in a way to "complain" and silence those who have a position different from ours, often without any foundation?

Maria Coelho

Youth and Democracy In different situations in our life, namely in our childhood and in the progress of our understanding of the World in which we live in, that same World is reduced to simple. Things are taught us a lot in “black and white”, so that we are not confused by the real ambiguity of society, and, as our existence unfolds, sooner for some, later for others, truths begin to emerge. Accepting the world as something complex, heterogeneous and, at times, enigmatic, is a process of discovery in every young person, or even an adult, that requires some maturity. When I use the word “accept”, I mean perseverance in the continuity of learning throughout our journey, as well as perseverance in actively contributing to the functioning of societies, even referring to Democracy. I know that, being the main theme of this article “Generation at Risk”, my generation has several flaws with regard to the complexity of the World and the consequent need for understanding and acceptance of it, and why? Their diversity and ambiguity discourages them, disinterests them, “because it is difficult”, “because it is for those who perceive”. To support my thinking, I asked some acquaintances to complete a survey in which one of the questions was “Are you culturally, politically and socially informed?” Of the 41 people, only 25% answered “Yes, one of my priorities as a citizen”, and the remaining 75% of the answers were “Vaguely, I recognize that there could be more”. One of the reasons that I can find in order to justify these real numbers is the normalization that some young people have in their own lack of information. Society in general tends to act within its comfort zone, normalizing its failure with external factors. Another question was exactly on this point, “Have you ever blamed external factors for your failure? For example: I didn't run because it was raining. ” Again, and now with a higher percentage, 78% answered “Yes”. Another of the reasons justifying the lack of information / interest, indicated by my colleagues, was the issue of a lack of attention in school education on the moral issues of society, as well as the lack of inclusion of young people in political participation by society. I like to think of the world as a kind of “snowball cause-effect”, that is, everything that society sows, one day later it will have to reap, exponentially increased. In this case, the fact that young people prefer to live in ignorance about some current issues, due to the difficulty or disorder that may cause them to be educated, causes their own inability to contribute assertively to the functioning of society, for example: in the great abstention to the vote. “Ignorance is the key to happiness” and society has relative legitimacy to act on this thought, sometimes almost involuntarily, in its day-to-day activities. However, you will have to take equal care to reflect if your awareness will not reach selfishness, and thus, your happiness will not cause unhappiness to the rest of the community. Collective feeling and its deficiency in a large part of society, today, is another important aspect to address. When I was younger, I tried to justify being told to put my seat belt on. It wasn’t for my safety, it wasn’t collective security, it was because the police would fine you if you don’t have your belt on. This does not mean that my safety was not important for whoever was ordering me to put on the belt, perhaps it was involuntary to lack his reference, but the truth is that it was inculcated in every mouth that the fact that they could be punished in the your pocket, it was more likely to

happen if I didn't have the belt on. Regarding compliance with pandemic safety rules, the same logic works. As a matter of priority, it is the appearance of the authorities and the consequent sanctions, and only afterwards is the real reason for the existence of safety rules: health. It makes me think that what affects each person's assets and capital individually is an immediate priority over the rest. The rest is done if it works, and if it does not imply other prevalence already effective. For example: If the adoption of sustainable practices is more expensive, that is, if an action with a view to the collective good (the environment), jeopardizes individual capital, it is, in large part of the population, put aside, it happens both in individuals and in companies, with priorities on the side of increasing profits. The emergence of measures that allow us to grow unselfishly, acting in accordance with the optimization of security, justice, health and the environment, is a request by the superiors to be better towards ourselves, the society, people. And isn't that confusing? Shouldn't it be the least bit common to worry about keeping in harmony? It is obvious that it would be a utopia to idealize a world where there is no need for obligations, where everyone acts voluntarily, but it is necessary to emphasize what we are exactly suppressing when we act according to our navel. To add, it will not be just what we do to avoid fines that will contribute positively to the development of the world, it will be what happens inside our homes, in situations where the citizen is not under the authority of anyone. Security and justice organizations are logistically unable to witness and correct each of the human acts and, therefore, the results will only appear when the citizen acts accordingly “without what”. Connecting all the points that for me are central to saving the generation, I ask: why is the interest of society, and action by a collective source, a motto of global development and democracy? Democracy only makes sense when there is a society that struggles to make itself feel complete, a society with the capacity to listen and make itself heard, that accepts the diversity and pluralism of people and ideals, of creating mechanisms for inclusion, with a view to collective growth. In contrast, the apology for human ignorance can be explained with a phrase written by Isaac Asimov “Anti-intellectualism is an increasingly common trend in political and cultural life, fuelled by the false idea that in democracy my ignorance is worth as much as your knowledge”. We understand that society can still have several rooted characteristics, but despite that, as a young person, and surrounded by other young people, I consider an aspect of special importance: the only action that can put an end to selfishness, inaction, and comfort, which is the main destroyer of democracy, is the creation of an individual critical spirit. We young readers are in a position to change. And how to do it? Through reflection, even what happens in our family, which is important and crucial! From the moment we reflect, we create a critical spirit, and act accordingly. As a citizen, I fear the growth of the selfish current, derived from the lack of actions in view of the collective. Unlike the visible majority, the complexity of the world does not discourage me, on the contrary, it leads me to its fascinating discovery and continuous learning. Maria Coelho

A Corrida

The Race On January 24, 4,262,672 Portuguese elected to the polling stations, who in the majority chose to reelect Marcelo Nuno Duarte Rebelo de Sousa to the highest magistracy in Portugal, the Presidency of the Republic. For an election campaign in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, 7 candidates were successfully presented at the Ratton Palace, who obtained the following results: • Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa - 2,534,745 votes (60.70%) • Ana Gomes - 541,556 votes (12.97%) • André Ventura - 496,773 votes (11.9%) • João Ferreira - 180,518 votes (4.32%) • Marisa Matias - 164,741 votes (3.95%) • Tiago Mayan Gonçalves - 134,384 votes (3.22%) • Vitorino Silva - 122,774 votes (2.94%) For those who do not know the portuguese electoral system, note that in order to be a candidate for the Presidential elections in Portugal, each interested party must deliver to the Constitutional Court a minimum of 7500 proposals and a maximum of 15000 until one month before the election day, being the limit date December 24, 2020. CANDIDATES Vitorino Silva: Paver from Penafiel and well known to all Portuguese, at the age of 49 he presented himself again to presidential elections, after having already done so 5 years ago. Born in Rans and president of the RIR party - React, Include, Recycle, it was with his support that he announced his candidacy, always calling himself the candidate of the people. Referring to the other politicians as "people who live on the 12th floor, who walk around with smoked glass in their cars and who do not know the temperature outside", in every debate he identified the street as his office and Porto, the city where he works, like his screen. Tiago Mayan Gonçalves: Lawyer from Porto, caused a surprise when announcing his candidacy for Belém with the support of the Liberal Initiative. At 43, he was unknown in the eyes of the Portuguese and caused natural distrust to his lack of political experience. The campaign was growing and made by digital media or television, in the form of interviews or debates, in which his performance was progressively improving. His candidacy leaves as a legacy the well-defined and confrontational position of his political barricade to the government and the complete separation of IL from CHEGA through the debate he had with Deputy André Ventura, in my opinion the best of the presidential debates that have occurred. Marisa Matias: The 45-year-old MEP advanced for the 2nd time after, like Vitorino Silva and the incumbent, disputed the 2016 Presidential elections. Leader of Bloco de Esquerda, this was the party that set up the campaign platform for her. Campaign very supported by the youth, sinned for not confronting the current President of the Republic. She made a campaign very focused on the candidate André Ventura and his party and gave him an importance that he does not have, remembering, for example, his debate with this one that went disastrously. Her race was weakened by the fragmentation of the left and the candidacy of the socialist Ana Gomes. João Ferreira: Making the 1976 Constitution his electoral program, João Ferreira was the candidate supported by the Portuguese Communist Party. MEP and councilor of the Municipality of Lisbon, he received great support from his bases to take the communist project to the public debate once again. A very confident candidate in the interviews, he presented himself, he had part of the most comical moment of the electoral campaign - his debate with André Ventura on TVI24 - so vexing that it was for both of them the heated discussion that he gave live across the country. It is true that the one who started it was not the candidate JF but he went along with it and gave even more strength to the opponent during the remarkable half hour in which they faced each other. The popularity of the current president and the position of Ana Gomes with a view to second place meant that, like Marisa Matias, João Ferreira also lost a lot of potential voters. André Ventura: President of CHEGA and deputy in the Assembly of the Republic, André Ventura advanced to Belém with the objective of measuring his electoral strength and possibly guaranteeing his much desired 2nd place. He was attacked from all sides and the ups and downs were holding on to voting intentions at the same level as Ana Gomes. The debates did not go particularly well with the exception of the one he had with Marisa Matias, mentioned above. It was in his person that Social Communication and social networks focused throughout the campaign. Maintaining his usual speech of shock with the current political system, he made it very clear that he does not see himself in the current Constitution and that he wants a new Republic in Portugal. In my opinion, he sinned immensely in attacking the candidate Ana Gomes and not so much Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and that this decision cost him the campaign objective. His result shows a great increase in his electoral power and his visions for the country, and the especially positive result obtained in many counties in the interior warns of a series of social problems that led those populations to vote the way they did. Ana Gomes: Ana Gomes launched her candidacy with the support of several personalities of the Socialist Party, of which she is a part, but did not have the party support. She had to be content with the public support of PAN and Livre that helped her with the campaign. Small aside, it is incredible how the biggest party in Portugal is unable to support anyone in presidential elections once again, devaluing them significantly. With a progressive and left-wing platform, Ana Gomes catalyzed votes coming from the parties to the left of her own and weakening her candidacies. She was in 2nd place, but she knew very little and Ana Gomes was very disappointed with the result she obtained on the electoral night. She focused her candidacy on the attack on André Ventura and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and ended it without being able to weaken either of them. Her obsession with outlawing the party of her direct opponent did not help her in public opinion and her disastrous debate with the current President of the Republic took away any possibility of withdrawing votes from him. She didn't get the 2nd lap that she wanted so badly. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa: Very easy. He announced his candidacy late and was never opposed in the entire campaign. The debates didn't help him, but they didn't hurt him either, from the "tea" he had with Mariza Matias, to his unnervedness towards Tiago Mayan and the total massacre he did to Ana Gomes in front of 1 million viewers. The percentage of abstention affected his political legitimacy a lot, but the increase in the absolute number of votes he received helped to alleviate this problem. Too easy, his first term deserved scrutiny and much stronger opposition. He was re-elected. OWNERSHIP On March 9, the elected President of the Republic, Marcelo Nuno Duarte Rebelo de Sousa appeared at the Assembly of the Republic and took up office there for his 2nd term as Head of State. Proclaimed and signed the following oath: - I swear on my honor to faithfully perform the functions in which I am invested and defend, comply and enforce the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic. Not being his biggest fan, I hope that he will fulfill his mandate with dignity and lead the country to the economic recovery and reorganization it so badly needs, through a careful and prudent scrutiny of government action. I hope that he will fulfill his duties as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, that he values and promotes them. Long live Portugal. JORNAL EUROPEU AECCB

Não me parece! O eTwinning conta convosco!

eTwinning 2021

In this sense, it is extremely important that children and young people develop skills that allow them to have a critical understanding of the media, and can have an active voice in combating disinformation. The development of eTwinning projects, with partners from several countries, allowing different views on the subject of media literacy and disinformation, is the challenge that we leave for 2021. Is this generation at risk? I don't think so! Rather, I think that we have new challenges that will lead to the development of a keen critical sense on the part of young people who are the hope of all of us in building a better and more fair world. ETwinning, through European partnerships, can contribute to the training of more informed, tolerant, critical young people with a sense of civic intervention. ETwinners teachers have the possibility to join the eTwinning Group under the theme of the year (https://groups.etwinning.net/151326/) where they can find countless resources and suggestions for activities for their projects. In Portugal, we will also have the possibility for teachers to apply for a project that has obtained a national quality seal in 2021, in the category corresponding to the theme of the year.

Media Literacy & Disinformation Teresa Lacerda, teresa.lacerda@dge.mec.pt National eTwinning Support Organization PT

The eTwinning community emerged in 2005, currently bringing together more than nine hundred thousand teachers from fortythree countries (www.etwinning.net). This expressive number of teachers corresponds to a much larger count of students who have the opportunity to work collaboratively on the curricular contents and subjects transversal to the curriculum. Each year eTwinning pays special attention to a global topic, having been chosen for 2021 as “Literacy for the Media & disinformation”. To better understand this choice, we have to go back to March 2020, when the lives of all of us underwent major changes due to Covid-19. This last year was spent with periods of confinement that led to a massive use of online, both to learn and to relax, which led social networks to have a greater presence in everyone's life. These networks are often important spaces for mutual help, business, leisure, but they can also be conducive to the spread of false news in order to contribute to disinformation. This fact has taken on great proportions with the current pandemic, so it is essential that the population in general and, in particular, young people are able to question the news that appears in order to distinguish what is true from what is false.

Geração em Risco

Generation at Risk Hello, dear friend!

Olá querido amigo!

This is not an article. It is a message in a bottle to you, a reader I will probably never meet face to face. Why did I choose to write it? Because I am grateful to a friend who has offered this opportunity to me. And I felt I have something to say. Hope you share my feelings, when you finish reading what I wrote. So, here we go… Every generation is at risk. The risk of not being equipped to cope with what lies either within and without or ahead and behind. The risk of misunderstanding or of misinterpreting signs, the risk of growing alienated from one’s dreams and wishes just for the sake of fitting in. The risk of becoming someone else. I have a five and a half year-old daughter. She is the centre of my universe as all children are to their parents. When I gave birth to her, I was at risk because of my medical condition. I brought her to life to deal with risks. Then, the pandemic came. We all risk a lot, with each step we take. Parental connections, love affairs, social links, psychological attempts at integration and acceptance, all are charged with billions of risky steps. Take them or leave them! And, basically, that is the choice we get. There is no day without night. No gain without pain. No victory without some sort of sacrifice. No worthwhile living without risks. Therefore, yes, we should stay alert. This generation is at risk. However, we should not think of it as something unbearable. It should merely challenge us to deal with it. This bottle that I chose as the recipient of my message to you used to be at risk, too. But you saved it and you read my message. Therefore, there is hope yet. There is hope that even this generation at risk will land ashore and grow deep roots. The risks we take are meant to fuel our energy and hope and motivate us to be stronger every single day. So, here we go again…

Então, veio a pandemia.

Hopefully, Me Luiza Crivăț

Take Precaution, End the Danger The eTwinning Take Precaution, End the Danger project is based on alerting students with Specific Needs to the dangers that surround them, namely at home, and getting them to recognize dangerous situations and to know how to prevent them. Thus, teachers from the Camilo Castelo Branco School Group (AECCB) and schools from Turkey, North Macedonia, Latvia and Ukraine, in monthly meetings, plan and articulate their activities so that our students develop and enhance forms of learning based on the objectives of this project: 1. Making the student's home and school environment safe; 2. Be aware of the dangers they may encounter, at home and at school; 3. Provide the students with an autonomous performance; 4. Develop the student's preventive and trusting sense; 5. Establish healthy communication between teacher, student and family; and 6. Know ways of prevention to be taken in case of danger. While the interruption of all teaching activities is effective, work proposals have been developed in class with our students, either in person or virtually. In the middle of a pandemic, this project has proved to be adequate and challenging, as it not only stimulates students' learning at home, in an attractive and motivating way, but also induces the effective and essential involvement of families in carrying out activities. In developing this project, students have shown their resilience to crisis situations arising from confinement resulting in the creation of a panoply of materials, both physical and virtual, that warn of dangers and ways of preventing and overcoming them. Among the benefits of this project are the sharing of good practices and methodologies, the increase in cultural awareness, the exchange of experiences and the promotion of constructive relationships. Take Precaution, End the Danger is an example that the AECCB, as a school for all and for each one, has adapted its educational project to the needs of young people in the 21st century and to what is advocated for the current school, ensuring inclusion and responding to the diversity of students' needs, potentials, interests and preferences, thus promoting equity through possible opportunities

LOSTNOTFOUND eTwinning project

According to Europol’s chief of staff, Brian Donald, no less than 10,000 migrant children went missing in Europe (2015). It is feared that some of them fell in the hands of drug gangs, human traffickers, or were sold into the sex industry. Others may have travelled to family or friends in Europe without reporting it. They have all but disappeared. The plight of unaccompanied child migrants is one of the most pressing issues in the migrant crisis. The goal of Lost in Europe is to recover the stories of these missing children. It comprises a team of investigative journalists from the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Germany, France, Greece and the UK, who are collaborating to find out what has happened to the disappeared children in Europe. https://lostineurope.eu/page/about Of course we spoke with journalists of Lost in Europe as well as with some Dutch organisations in charge of the reception and guidance of unaccompanied refugee children. We would very much like to raise awareness amongst other youngsters like us, how can we let this happen? Why does no one really takes responsibility. It should not be a political issue, it is a matter of human rights, especially children’s rights. We have found wonderful project partners and students from Portugal, Cyprus and Greece and together we continue our project via eTwinning as well.

In June 2019 students from Revius Lyceum Doorn visited The Humanity House, the Hague, in the context of an extracurricular programme about “Human Rights”. The Humanity House organised exhibitions, expert talks/webinars and alike regarding refugees but it also offered the possibility to see, hear and experience what it must feel like to flee and leave everything behind. Of course the visit was a very impressive experience, we were not just observers, but participants in the journey of refugees as well. Unfortunately the Humanity House no longer exists. While visiting the Humanity House our attention was drawn to a flyer “LOSTNOTFOUND”. According to the flyer more than 10.000 refugee children disappeared in Europe since 2015. Many of these children probably fell into the hands of criminal organisations that abuse or exploit children (child labour, prostitution, or killed for their organs). Since the day of our visit we felt the need to act somehow. Our (re)search began. The Power of Art House in Amsterdam started the project LOSTNOTFOUND. Power of Art House is a creative platform. They use art to open eyes, to raise awareness of social issues. To attract attention, they turned hundreds of refugee children’s clothing into golden clothes. They found these clothes in several places, mostly in forests. The golden colour triggered the public to take a closer look. It also raises some confrontational questions: what if these children had been rich? How much are these children worth to us? Do we think it’s worth searching them? The origin of LOSTNOTFOUND lies in LOST IN EUROPE, a cross-border journalism project investigating the disappearance of child migrants in Europe: JORNAL EUROPEU AECCB

Elas quase desapareceram. O objetivo de Lost in Europe é resgatar as histórias dessas crianças desaparecidas.

A nossa (re)busca começou. A Power of Art House de Amsterdão deu início ao projeto LOSTNOTFOUND. A Power of Art House é uma plataforma criativa. JORNAL EUROPEU AECCB
