Smithfield's Chicken 'N Bar-B-Q®

AT FLOWERS PLANTATION

Smithfield’s Chicken ‘n Bar-B-Q ®, known for its classy barbeque and unique take on traditional Southern cuisine, now has 38 locations and counting across North Carolina and imminent plans for development in South Carolina. Before it became a common sight throughout the state, it had its humble beginnings in Smithfield.

A Brief History

The Moore family has been in the Bar-B-Q business for a long time. Precursors to the brand we all love today began as ‘Smithfield Bar-B-Q’ in Smithfield NC in the mid 1960’s, Opened by Junius and Maggie Moore. Another location was opened in Clayton NC in the late 70’s. It was a more traditional restaurant establishment emphasizing dine in and wait staff.

Gregory Moore, their son, joined the business and built a location in Salter Path, NC in 1979. Over the next couple of years Gregory would develop the systems and menu we all know about today.

All these plans came to fruition in Jacksonville, NC with the opening of the Gum Branch Rd location in 1983. Controversial at the time, Gregory designed a new prototype building, refined the menu, added a functional modern drive thru, and instituted a ‘order at the counter’ system while retaining overall dining room service. A conscious decision was made to dress up this regional delicacy and the stores that served it, to present a more professional and refined atmosphere that would be more inviting to the masses. Most importantly this system and building prototype was the first step in achieving scalability. This was the first Smithfield’s Chicken n Bar-B-Q®. Growth took off, with new restaurants built all over eastern NC. Smithfields began selling franchises in 1986. Expansion to Raleigh area began in 1987 with construction of Zebulon and Dunn stores. Around this time the Smithfield Bar-B-Q stores in Smithfield and Clayton were converted to the Smithfields Chicken ‘n Bar B Q system.

Classic Roots, Modern Growth

Since then, the business has evolved into a steadily growing chain that aims to have a polished, classy feel. In 2008, the building prototype of Smithfield’s Chicken n’ Barbeque was redesigned. The new aesthetic takes the brand to the next level. The company is focused on evolving its older stores to match the modern, yet classic look of the new ones. In the last ten years they have torn down and rebuilt many old locations with the new prototype. Our legacy New Bern store are currently in process of being re-built this year. Customers have approved and shown a strong increase in business as a result.

After years of watching the growth happening out at Flowers plantation, it was decided that Smithfield’s would commit to a new store there. Our store opened there in 2022 and we are proud to serve the community there. It is our fourth location in Johnston County.

According to Mortimer Adler, even if someone possesses volumes of books, complete ownership does not happen until he or she beholds their ideas and leaves no stone unturned in the process. This accomplishment, Adler maintained, can only be evinced by copious markings, dog-eared pages, and loose binding. The consumption of a book in this way is an act of devotion, and in Adler’s estimation, makes the text truly belong to its reader.1

At Thales Academy, we cultivate an attachment to books, especially the classics which possess timeless qualities with the potential to transform hearts and minds. One of the ways we promote engagement with these works is by training students in the art of annotating. Annotations are personal markings in a text, which may include highlighting, underlining, symbols, and notes in the margins. In sixth grade, we share insight from Adler’s exhortations and explain to students that, ultimately, their annotations are their own— just like their books. Through a bit of experimentation and with some guidance, they will determine the best means of recording what they understand, wonder about, and long to remember. It is this active reading, as Adler described it, that enables them both to think more comprehensively and improve their communication skills.

Almost inevitably, when teachers finish reading a book with students, we wonder how it went. Did it mean something to them? Did it encourage them to reflect on their own lives? There is always so much more we could have said! In those instances, we hold fast to the idea that we are only with students for their first read of a text. We have faith that they will pick up these books again. Maybe they will rediscover The Iliad when they prepare for senior thesis, or perhaps they will read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe to their own

children one day. In that spirit, students enrolled at Thales Academy next year will receive personal copies of all texts to be read in junior high and high school literature classes. While there is a practical function to this, more importantly, we believe the books on our reading lists contain insight into the human condition and are thus worth keeping. We are committed to offering students a good first read of the books they own, and it is our hope that they will build a library and return to these most treasured stories in the years to come.

Brand-New

The Averly at Flowers is proud to be an active and engaged part of the Flowers community, consistently creating opportunities for connection, service, and celebration.

We are especially excited to celebrate a major milestone, April 2026 marks one year since ECI has been onsite. This anniversary represents a year of growth, relationshipbuilding, and continued commitment to creating a welcoming and vibrant living experience for our residents.

We are honored to be part of the Flowers community and look forward to continuing to grow, give back, and create meaningful experiences for both our residents and neighbors.

We host a variety of local businesses each week through our rotating food truck program, bringing residents together while supporting small, local vendors. These events have quickly become a favorite within our community and a great way to foster connection among neighbors.

Giving back is also a core part of who we are. We actively participate in meaningful charitable initiatives, including blood drives with The Blood Connection and holiday giving through Toys for Tots. PUBLIC SAFETY DIVISION

Summer Safety Initiative

As summer approaches and families spend more time outdoors, the importance of community safety becomes even more essential. This season, the Public Safety Division is proud to once again partner with HWY 42 Café Hershey Ice Cream to launch the annual Summer Safety Initiative—a program designed to encourage safe habits among youth while fostering meaningful community connections.

Throughout the summer months, Public Safety Officers will be actively engaging with young residents who demonstrate positive, safety-conscious behavior in their daily activities. Whether it’s using designated crosswalks, wearing bicycle helmets, helping maintain a clean environment, or simply making responsible choices, these actions will not go unnoticed.

Participants who exemplify these behaviors may be rewarded with a “Safety Ticket,” which can be redeemed at HWY 42 Café for a complimentary scoop of Hershey’s ice cream. While the reward is certainly a highlight, the true purpose of the initiative lies in reinforcing good habits and creating positive interactions between youth and public safety professionals.

“This program gives us a unique opportunity to connect with our community in a positive and engaging way,” said Ryan Jordan, Director of Community Relations & Public Safety.

“It’s about recognizing the small actions that make a big difference and encouraging our youth to take pride in keeping themselves and their community safe.”

The Summer Safety Initiative not only promotes awareness but also strengthens relationships between residents and Public Safety Officers, helping build trust and familiarity in a relaxed, approachable setting.

With a limited number of Safety Tickets available, officers will be on the lookout all summer long for those who lead by example. It’s a simple concept with a meaningful impact— combining education, engagement, and a sweet reward to make safety a community-wide priority.
