OF FLOWERS CROSSROADS IN THE HEART
Nestled in the heart of Flowers Crossroads stands the iconic Percy Flowers Store, a beloved landmark that has maintained its charming design since 1986. While the original Percy Flowers Store was once located at the intersection of Jordan Narron Road and Buffalo Road, it tragically succumbed to a fire in 1941. That same year, Mr. Percy Flowers relocated the store to its current location, where it has since become a cornerstone of the Flowers Plantation community. In 1986, the original store was redesigned based on the historic district designs of Williamsburg, VA, giving it the classic aesthetic that visitors and locals admire today.
For over four decades, the store has been home to one of its most treasured establishments—The Grocery Bag. Opened in 1982, The Grocery Bag has been delighting locals and visitors alike with its “Almost Famous Hot Dogs” and an array of delicious treats. A true family business from the very beginning, the store was founded by the late Mr. Tommy Fitzgerald, who, along with his wife Donna, ran the store every day, ensuring that customers enjoyed both quality food and friendly conversation. Mr. Tommy was known for his commitment to his patrons, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that extended beyond just a place to eat.
After Mr. Tommy’s passing, Donna continued the legacy, preserving the high standard of food and customer service that had made The Grocery Bag a community staple. Her dedication to maintaining the traditions of the store has solidified its reputation for not only serving the best hot dogs around but also providing an inviting and customer-focused environment. Today, The Grocery Bag remains a family-run establishment, with Donna and her niece Hayley at the helm. Together, they ensure that every visitor is greeted with a smile, continuing the tradition of hospitality that has defined the store for decades.
Beyond offering gas, drinks, snacks, and meals, The Grocery Bag is a cherished gathering place where community members come together to share laughter, stories, and companionship. The tables out front offer a picturesque view of the lake, allowing patrons to relax and enjoy their meals in an open-air setting with plenty of shade. The combination of good food, great company, and a beautiful setting makes The Grocery Bag much more than a convenience store—it is a central hub of the Flowers Crossroads community.
As the business continues to grow and evolve, Hayley and Donna have expanded their offerings with the recent opening of the Crossroads Boutique and Gifts shop—located at (you guessed it!) the Percy Flowers Store. This charming boutique is a one-stop destination for shoppers seeking stylish apparel, trendy shoes, and unique accessories, including fashionable cups and tumblers. The boutique reflects the same commitment to quality and customer care that has made The Grocery Bag so successful. Whether you’re looking for the latest fashion trends or a special gift for a loved one, Crossroads Boutique provides an inviting shopping experience with something for everyone.
Family-owned and operated, The Grocery Bag and Crossroads Boutique stand as shining examples of the heart and soul of Flowers Crossroads. These businesses are more than just places to shop and dine—they represent the enduring spirit of community, tradition, and family values. Every day, locals and visitors alike have the opportunity to experience the warmth of fellowship, the joy of shared laughter, and the pleasure of great food and shopping—all within the welcoming embrace of Flowers Plantation. Whether you’re a longtime resident or a first-time visitor, a stop at Percy Flowers Store is sure to leave you with lasting memories and a true appreciation for this beloved community landmark.

Fresh Air, Fresh Minds
AT THALES ACADEMY
Spring has sprung in North Carolina, and it is a wonderful time to get outside. The recognition of the importance of fresh air is shared across Thales Academy. All of our campus buildings are outfitted with special rooftop HVAC units that bring in fresh air and purge stale air constantly, providing our learning environments with superior indoor air quality. We also work to provide our students with outdoor time daily beyond the Pre-K and elementary school recess times.
Some of the ways our Thales Academy at Flowers Plantation campus offers opportunities for getting fresh air outside (as weather & class content allow) include:
• Nature walks (Pre-K) and other outdoor walks with specialist teachers (K–5)
• Reading sessions held outside (1–5)
• Outdoor PE classes (Pre-K–5)
• Class conducted at picnic tables or on the front lawn (junior high & high school)
• Outside student group work time (junior high & high school)
• Historical outdoor games to match the time periods being taught in history(junior high & high school)
One of our colleagues—Ashley Bahor, Head of School at Thales Academy Rolesville (one of our sister campuses to the northwest)—wrote a recent article about the importance of fresh air for fresh minds for our students, which we share below:
We’ve all felt the instant reward of venturing outside and getting that first whiff of fresh air and sunlight after spending a long stretch of time indoors. Research has shown that exposure to the outdoors on a daily basis improves our mood and productivity and enhances our overall health. The great outdoors also provides us with a source of wonder and inspiration as we take in our surroundings.
This year at Thales Academy Rolesville, we set a goal to create more opportunities for students to get outside during the school day to enhance their overall well-being. At the beginning of the year, our leadership team talked with the faculty about how to incorporate regular exposure to the outdoors during the school year by providing purposeful lessons and activities outside, even if it’s only for small chunks of time. Our teachers were keen to work together and think about how students could get outside without losing academic time.
Research has established that exposure to nature can improve focus and reduce stress levels, allowing students to learn better.
In the beginning of the year, our school counselor started a lunch club named “Picnic N’ Play” where students could sign up and go outside with her to participate in group activities during lunchtime. This group was inspired after reading The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, which argues that students should have less screen time and more play time to develop appropriately. The first week she introduced the opportunity, over 100 students volunteered to be a part of it. With that type of reaction, we knew immediately this
lunch effort was something that we needed to continue to offer and include. From there, our junior high homeroom teachers created a schedule for students to go outside one time a week with their grade level at lunch. This valuable time also gives way to greater social and emotional development since students have time to connect with their classmates. It is a fast and simple reboot so that the students can go to their afternoon classes with a clearer, focused mind.
Outdoor activities help students develop healthy lifestyle routines, and our PE classes provide a wonderful opportunity to get students outside on a regular basis. Our PE faculty promptly set up units that utilize the outdoors and the gym. Students regularly run, circuit train, and play group games on the outside fields and parking lots. You can sense when you see the smiles on the faces of the students and teachers as they descend to the field or our outdoor classroom for an intermission from the school building that this time is precious and worth it.
We believe that by placing an emphasis on outdoor learning that we will be able to improve our students’ educational experience and prepare them for a healthier, more well-rounded future.
By Caitlin Moody, Pre-K–5 Head of School, and Brittney Massey, JH/HS Head of School, Thales Academy at Flowers Plantation
