You can feel it. Even now, you can begin to see it.

While winter is still with us and making sure we know it, the signs of spring are unmistakable. Daylight greets us earlier in our day and lingers on until early evening, giving us the promise of being able to spend more time outside.

If you look closely, you may see some of the earliest of our perennials peeking above the detritus of fall, preparing to treat us with the first splashes of color against the gray palette we have called winter.

If the new year is a time of resolve, spring is a time for us to celebrate the renewal of life and its rejuvenation. It is time to sing like no one is listening and dance like no one is looking. And let’s truly hope that is the case or you’ll soon see it on YouTube or Facebook.

Seriously though, spring has always been a time for a positive outlook and our columns and articles for this issue reflect a lot of that. You will read about fiscal and physical health in two of our columns. One of our articles highlights how an entrepreneurial “spirit” has breathed new life into an old textile plant and how family history is woven into that story.

Another of our articles chronicles some of the developments in the restoration a 75- year-old historic building that languished in neglect for almost a quarter of a century but which is now beginning to take shape into a new entertainment and culinary locale. Creativity and artistic flair are further explored in an article about a local gallery that has utilized a co-op business model to create success.

Another of our writers has served us up a slice of by-gone days with her coverage of a unique Foothills area museum. If you enjoy athletics, check out the story about a local woman who pursues an interesting, and tough, sport.

In case it has slipped your mind, the American Legion World Series makes its first appearance in its new permanent home this coming August. While most of us are simply looking forward to the games, scores of volunteers have been hard at work to ensure the event will be an unforgettable one for both participants and fans. Brief Happiness or True Serenity...

The Choice is Yours words/ KAtHErINE PANtHEr-POtEmKIN

A

re you genuinely happy? I don’t mean happy because you received a salary increase, won the lottery, got a new car or took a great vacation. I mean an abiding, deep happiness and inner serenity. Most people want such serenity, but many never experience anything but surface happiness.

That’s because fleeting experiences and external things produce a temporary happiness that quickly fades. Such happiness comes and goes in a moment, leaving us longing for something deeper and more lasting.

Some of us hold onto the belief that some thing, person or situation is going to miraculously make us deeply happy. Others wait for conditions to be right for happiness. We play the “When I…” and “If only…” game, focusing on the future when things will be different and we can be forever serene. True abiding serenity can’t be found by waiting for things to change

but rather by recognizing the best of ourselves and the life we have right now.

If we want deep serenity we have to show up for the journey of life, embrace it and let it unfold. We have to be open to abiding joy. Writer Mark Kingwell said, “Happiness is not simply a feeling or emotion; it is a real connection to the world, a realization of one’s place in it.” If we’re waiting for things to get better, we aren’t likely to have that real connection and realization.

True serenity involves state of mind, attitude and choice in the present moment. When we quit waiting for something better and make the present our focal point, our serenity increases dramatically. Better times and deep serenity come from being fully present to experience and participate in our journey with a sense of aliveness. Old habits of waiting for better times may be deeply ingrained, but there are steps one can take

to change those habits and choose serenity now.

Practice thankfulness. Value the gift of life and thankfully recognize your strengths, abilities and blessings. Name and honor people and situations in your life that help you. Be thankful for those who irritate you or seemingly block your way for they contribute to your growth. Appreciate your family, and show it. See today’s beauty around you.

Be positive. Focus on what is right in your life. Each day, recall at least one positive thing from the past 24 hours. You have full control over your thoughts, so practice awareness and turn negative self-talk into positive.

Choose to respond. When things are difficult, swallow back negative habitual responses. Such responses don’t ease the difficulty. They just wrap us up for days, months or years in pain, helplessness, anger or negativity. Respond rather than reacting.

Face the situation and inventory aspects you can and can’t control. Then take positive action in those areas you can control. Fortify yourself by looking at past difficulties you have overcome and recalling personal and outside resources that helped you then.

Access those that are currently available. Recognize that adversities might be favors in disguise: Every experience contributes to your journey and difficulties do pass. Remember the Serenity Prayer: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.”

Soothe yourself. Recognize your symptoms of anxiety and worry, and ease them with deep breathing.

Tune into what soothes, uplifts and comforts you in healthy ways. Then set aside regular time for selfsoothing, whether it be quiet time, a cup of tea, a warm bath or talking with a friend.

Life is not perfect. Yet we sometimes act as if we think it should be, denying ourselves true happiness and serenity. There is a Zen insight that says, “Think of life as a series of imperfect facts.” According to Viktor Frankl, “Facts are not fate. What matters is the stand we take towards them.” Take your stand by choosing to live right now in thankfulness and positivity. Step fully into a connection with, and response to, the present. Remember that true serenity is not found in exterior things nor reserved until future better times.

There are those, I know, who will say that the liberation of humanity, the freedom of man and mind, is nothing but a dream. They are right. It is the American dream. ~Archibald MacLeish

I

n the 1800s, millions of people thought that coming to America would allow them to have a better life and pursue their dreams. Many took a chance for a better life, risking life and limb and all that they had in their homeland, for this new and fairly unchartered land. These chance takers were typically young people age 15 to 30 who predominated among the newcomers. News spread and after 1870, this particular wave of migration, which could more accurately be called a flood, constituted the third episode in the history of U.S. immigration. Nearly 25 million Europeans had made the voyage to America with the bulk consisting of Italians, Greeks, Hungarians, Poles, and others speaking Slavic languages. Included among them were 2.5 to 4 million Jews.

pattern in terms of the gender balance within the migratory pool, the permanence of their migration, their literacy rates, the balance between adults and children, and the like. But they shared one overarching characteristic: They flocked to urban destinations and made up the bulk of the U.S. industrial labor pool, making possible the emergence of such industries as steel, coal, automobile, textile, and garment production, and enabling the United States to leap into the front ranks of the world’s economic giants.

Opportunity was plentiful in America, unlike the homelands they had left behind.

Now, fast forward to America today: Unemployment is up and work is hard to find. What do the third and fourth generations of these immigrants do to find their American dream?

Is what we are lacking a new land? Do we get stuck in a rut because we live where we live and we just don’t think or see that there is any opportunity here anymore? Are we looking at the 100-mile region around where we live as all the opportunity that is present? Do we need to move to a new place?

“A change in latitude is a change in attitude” as my favorite philosopher Jimmy Buffett might say.

I would say “no!” Opportunity exists in all of us, if we use our amazing minds. Mental creation is the key to our future! In our minds the opportunities are limitless. We need to think more and focus our energy on what could be and not what is. We need the resolve and imagination to find opportunities where it seems none exist.

In a recent speech, President Obama cited the example of the early days of the United States’ space program. When the Russians launched Sputnik in the late 1950s and said they would be the first to reach the moon, John F. Kennedy told Americans we would be the first, yet we had no space program at the time. He then invented the opportunity and put people to work on it. In 1969, it was an American who first stepped onto the moon’s surface.

We all have the ability to invent opportunity. What it takes is the attitude to want something better, not a change in latitude.

I think most people just accept where they are and use the situation and state of the economy as an excuse to rationalize why they can’t get ahead or achieve their dreams. We don’t have to immigrate to new areas for opportunity. All we have to do is use our brain power to expose opportunities for our American dreams. Our amazing minds are the new frontier and everyone has this land of opportunity inside. It takes thought and action. It also takes the ability to risk it all, just as millions of immigrants did, to have our dreams come true.

Those that are willing to take the chance can have the reward. Don’t let your surroundings limit your life and happiness; make the move to a more cerebral land of opportunity and have all that you can imagine.

A

s springtime approaches and the freshness of the blooms and budding flowers peek out into the crispness of the sky, so raises the unsettling heads of springtime allergies. From sniffles to coughs to runny noses, more and more children fall prey to the allergy bugs. For a person with allergies, the body treats these foreign substances, called allergens, as if they are invaders. For most of us, the substances that we come into contact with are harmless, but for allergy sufferers, the slightest dust bunny can wreak havoc on an ordinary spring day.

The best advice is to figure out how to help alleviate some of the misery BEFORE springtime hits. The most common allergy invaders include things that we don’t often see and most of them are airborne. Pollen, mold, and dust mites are some of the main culprits.

• Pollen – Though we need pollen to help pollinate and fertilize many of our plants, it can enter the eye, nose and throat and cause uncomfortable results for humans. Pollen is often released from

weeds, trees or grass. This outdoor allergen, which can produce hay fever, is characterized by sneezing and runny noses.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, short of keeping your children indoors or moving to a place where the culprit pollen does not exist, there is no sure way to avoid coming into contact with pollen. However, with planning, some of the uncomfortable symptoms associated with contact can be reduced. For example, check the air quality forecast and choose activities accordingly. If the report shows that the air quality or pollen count is high, try to find an activity that won’t expose your child to the outdoor contaminants. Save the low pollen days for outdoor opportunities which allow the fresh air to be a part of the planning!!

• Dust Mites – Dust mites are those little bugs that live in dust balls. Dust mites can be particularly bothersome to people with asthma. It would be great to find all of the dust mites and get rid of

them but dust mites are invisible to the naked eye. Therefore, it is easy for dust mites to reside in bedding, carpet, furniture and other comfy places.

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, dust mites are often the culprit for repeated sinus infections.

The key to helping alleviate dust mites is keeping the home as dust free as possible. Avoid bedding that proves to be a cozy home for dust. If your child loves stuffed animals, wash them frequently. Keeping the home free of clutter and vacuuming often will also help keep the dust bunnies down. Remember: the fewer the dust contacts, the fewer or less drastic the allergic attacks. Your doctor may suggest other therapies to help treat your child’s allergies. In addition, air purifiers have been suggested by some allergists to help reduce dust. Air purifiers with humidification capabilities can help keep the air moist, thus keeping the dryness from settling in the air.

• Mold – Pollen is often found outdoors and dust mites are found indoors, but mold lives in both places. Mold likes to hide outside in leaves, wood and dirt. However, it also likes the dark confines of a basement, moist areas or garbage cans. Most of us can function OK when exposed to some degree of mold but for allergy sufferers, mold can prove to be an unfriendly fungus. Allergists also remind us to make sure our foods aren’t carrying mold.

Sour cream, cheese, mushrooms and bread are just a few of the foods that mold enjoys. You may not see the mold directly on the outside because it can extend into the inside of the food where you may not see it. Choose foods carefully and make sure they are as fresh as possible.

As in any case, when it comes to your child’s health, consult a physician to help devise the best plan of treatment. This spring and summer may not be allergy free, but it can prove to be a little less miserable if concerns are addressed early on.

COMPOSTING STRUCTURES Finding the space for compost can sometimes be an issue. To solve this dilemma, there are many composters available through local and online retailers that make composting easy and less unsightly. Those that have room can construct a very basic structure to maintain a compost pile. The two-bin or three-bin composter is one of the most efficient structures.

This structure can be constructed using old wooden pallets or treated lumber and some type of fencing material. The compost can be turned from one bin to the next allowing for larger quantities of compost to be generated at one time.

Composting is a solution that will decrease the buildup of waste in our landfills and benefit your garden in many ways. The process of composting yard waste and kitchen scraps may require a little hard work and patience, but it can be very rewarding if done correctly.

COMPOST INGREDIENTS Choosing the right combination of ingredients is important to ensure the most efficient composting process. Composting requires the proper mixture of carbon-rich (brown) and nitrogen-rich (green) ingredients. We recommend approximately 75 percent carbon materials to 25 percent nitrogen materials. Common green materials include grass clippings, manure, weeds, non-woody plant material and kitchen scraps. Common brown materials include dried leaves, straw, pine needles and wood chips. It is important that all materials are shredded or chipped to expedite the decomposition process.

The compost pile is not the solution for all waste.

You should avoid using pet waste because of risk of disease or pathogens. Also avoid meat, grease and dairy products because they can attract pests. Do not include plant material that has been recently treated with herbicide or pesticides.

METHODS OF COMPOSTING Composting occurs naturally all around us in nature but it is a slow process. This method of composting has been termed “cold composting.” The method that best suits most home owners is termed “hot composting” because it is a much faster process.

Cold composting requires little to no maintenance but can take years to generate any beneficial product.

Creating a large pile of leaves, grass clippings and scraps and letting it decay is basically cold composting. The major disadvantages to this method are the time required and that the temperature in the pile does not get high enough to kill weed seed and disease pathogens.

Hot composting is a much faster process but requires continual maintenance. The internal temperature of the pile can reach 150-160 F, which is hot enough to kill any weed seeds and disease pathogens present.

THE COMPOST PILE After deciding the content of your compost, you can start building your pile. Creating layers of brown and green materials can efficiently mix all the materials but may not be practical if all the ingredients are not stockpiled. You should try to achieve a pile that is 3-5 cubic feet for best results. This size pile is manageable but big enough to generate the heat needed for fast decomposition.

Two important things to consider when maintaining the compost pile are the moisture content and aeration.

The pile should remain moist and well aerated. To maintain this condition, it may be necessary to wet the pile during dry spells or cover the pile during rainy periods. Turn the pile every two weeks to maintain aeration and high core temperature.

USING COMPOST The finished product is a black composition of decomposed organic matter that can do wonders in the garden. Compost incorporated into the soil builds soil structure that allows for better drainage and aeration. Compost provides many essential nutrients to plants without the addition of fertilizer. Compost can also be used as a mulch layer but do not substitute compost for traditional pine bark mulch because it will not deter weeds.

We hope these tips can get you well on your way to composting all the yard waste and kitchen scraps you haul off to the dump every year. Composting is one step toward an eco-friendly garden.

O

ne of my favorite material possessions is my satellite radio. I can tune into a variety of different channels and always find something of interest. It has music channels, talk channels, sports channels and comedy channels. Depending upon your mood, you can listen to alternative music from the 1980s, jazz, rap, rock and music from the 1940s or any other decade for that matter.

After a stressful week recently, I had the opportunity to spend about an hour and a half alone in my car while driving to my in-laws house. I had my large cup of coffee and the satellite radio set for the trip. The day was overcast but still nice enough to open the sunroof and enjoy the fresh air. So off I went, coffee mug steaming and channel 44 on the radio: life was good. Starting off with music from my college years, I listened to a couple songs, then switched the channel to a ‘70s station. I caught the last half of “It Never Rains in Southern California,” a song I remembered from my childhood and hadn’t heard in years. The

next song wasn’t so good so it was back to channel 44 where I caught a portion of a Pixies song. Soon I was off to another channel and more song switching, never really getting to hear more than one or two complete songs at a time.

As my drive continued, I started thinking about what I was doing and how it is exactly what we advise against in dealing with the investment portion of a client’s financial plan. A lot of people continually chase the latest hot-performing sector or class. In doing so, they only capture a part of the performance and must continually switch between the sectors or different asset classes. It is almost impossible to predict which asset class will be the best-performing or worstperforming in any given year. I’m not saying it can’t be done, only that it can’t be done on a consistent basis.

Each class can have drastic periodic changes. To have an effective strategy switching between the asset classes you must be right every time. That means you have to know when to get out, when to get back in,

when to get out again, and on and on. Good luck with that method.

In our opinion, a better alternative, which is backed up by academic research and historic data, is a properly diversified portfolio that will allow investors to reduce the risks associated with investing. By allocating your assets over different investment classes as determined by your goals and risk tolerance, you can reduce the volatility of your portfolio. Asset allocation is one of the most important decisions you can make as an investor. Recent studies have found that over time asset allocation makes up approximately 91 percent of the factors contributing to the performance of a portfolio. Market timing contributes another 2 percent, security selection accounts for another 5 percent and all other factors total 2 percent. Obviously, you can control the asset allocation and security selection and in doing so control approximately 96 percent of the factors affecting performance. You can’t control what the market does but if you think you can, we would love to talk to you about it.

If you are thinking about mutual funds you’ve held for many years and how you haven’t deviated from “staying the course” with those, you may want to examine the turnover ratio of your fund. The turnover ratio is the percentage of the fund’s holdings which have been replaced during the year. A higher turnover ratio means there is more selling and buying going on within the fund. This constitutes a friction such as fees and taxes that reduce your investment gain. So even if you’ve held a fund for many years, the underlying holdings may have changed drastically.

Just as I was changing the stations and not getting the entire song, investors who change their strategy, or worse, don’t have one at all, tend to miss the greatest performances. Develop the appropriate strategy for you, monitor it carefully and stick with it.

Sure, you may hear some bad songs along the way, but the end result will be a trip with less anxiety, work and stress when you arrive at your destination.

G

rowing up in the Detroit, Mich. area, Gary Kulas always enjoyed looking at old buildings.

By the time he went to college, he pretty much knew his career path would involve working with them. While pursuing his studies in both architecture and engineering, he realized something else ‌ he didn’t want to just work with buildings, he wanted a hands-on experience with them. And not just with any buildings; Gary found himself being drawn to older, historic structures in need of care.

Pursuing his dream, in 1992 he took a bold step, purchasing a 1890s era Victorian mansion in Detroit. Through extensive renovations, he created a comfortable living area, as well as a large banquet facility and arts gallery. He did not know it at the time, but this was the seed that would grow into his current project, renovation of the Rogers Theater in the Uptown Shelby historic district.

Gary moved to Shelby in 2008, having tired of the long Michigan winters and wanting proximity to mountains and coast, yet not being so far from his hometown that he couldn’t drive there. He visited the Foothills area in all four seasons. “The area had everything I wanted geographically,” he recalls. It was an easy decision for him to move.

One of his first local projects was the former Royster home on South Washington Street in Shelby, owned now by Jack and Nancy Horner. When he mentioned his dream to them of finding a historic structure that he might renovate into a restaurant and dinner theater venue, Nancy suggested the El Nido home on Warren Street, which she knew locals were actively working to preserve.

Gary was excited about the building but once he was able to see it, he knew it would be too small for what he had in mind. Ted Alexander, Shelby’s mayor and a representative of Preservation North Carolina, recommended him to Wade Nichols and the Uptown Shelby Association, who owned the Rogers. While Gary immediately knew this was a great opportunity for his vision, he realized that it would take some time to close a deal. Nine months later, in September 2009, he was able to conclude the purchase of the building.

Since then, Gary and his team have removed over 70,000 pounds of debris. In keeping with efforts to be as “green” as possible in his restoration efforts, he’s managed to recycle more than 20,000 pounds of that total. Gary admits that while they have found a few surprises along the way, the integrity of the building is sound. His goal is to restore the Rogers as closely as possible to the way it looked when it opened as a movie theater in 1936, some 75 years ago. But while movies will still be shown here, the building’s functions will be greatly expanded.

There will be two separate restaurants in the facility. The former balcony area will have an upscale, moderately-priced restaurant that will seat more than 100 patrons and feature a bar and grand piano. Gary says a varied menu will be offered, including “comfort” foods, he adds with a smile. In support of local farmers, ranchers and vinters, “It is our goal that, when you dine with us, everything on your plate has come from within 15 miles of your seat,” Gary says. This level will be accessible by way of the main staircase or a small elevator.

Gary says the main level will be more of a multipurpose performing arts and banquet facility. The sloped floor of the theater will be transformed into three main seating levels that can accommodate some 300 people. “This will become a wonderful space for movies, concerts, banquets and receptions and dinner theater,” Gary says.

While dinner theater was a definite goal for Gary, it was an e-mail contact from Janet Sims, president of the Greater Shelby Community Theater (GSCT), that gave him real hope that it might actually happen.

Last spring, Janet wrote Gary and asked if there was any way that the GSCT could collaborate with him and support his efforts to reopen the Rogers. “I was ecstatic,” Gary recalls, “because while performing theater was definitely a goal of mine, it is not my area of expertise.”

“From the theater side of things (GSCT), we’ve had

wonderful community support over the years but have been looking for a permanent home for some time,” says Janet. “Our group had an interest in the Rogers and actually served with the Cleveland County Arts Council and others a few years ago on a consortium to look at restoring it.” While that effort hit obstacles that thwarted progress, it showed GSCT what could be.

“When Gary responded to my initial inquiry in such a positive way, we presented the possibility of collaborating with him to our board and they endorsed the idea,” Janet says. “Since then, we’ve been working with Gary on a lease and he has become a member of our board.”

Janet says that it will still be a while before the group can expect to perform in the theater; until then, GSCT will continue to hold it performances at Cleveland Community College and the Arts Council.

“Both of the organizations have been very supportive of us as we’ve looked for a permanent home,” Janet

says.

For now, work continues on the $1.1-million restoration project for the theater. Gary notes that “while the project won’t be finished this year, we are definitely going to hold some kind of community event here during 2011 to celebrate the theater’s 75th birthday.”

When asked if he thinks the theater will compete with other venues for business, Gary is decidedly positive about prospects for the entire area and not just the theater. “I think the Rogers will actually help other venues and vice-versa,” he says. He envisions all the venues serving to attract more, not fewer, visitors to the area. “That will be good for everyone,” he adds.

Once it is fully operational, the theater may employ as many as 50 people. One of those positions he plans to call the Environmentalist; “this person will be in charge of seeing that we are making every effort to be as earth-friendly as possible and to always be looking for addition ways to be Greener,” says Gary.

“We also have plans for photo voltaic energy (solar power) on the roof, will actively recycle, have rain water reclamation and high efficiency HVAC systems.”

Gary’s enthusiasm for the project is infectious and many have come forward to help in a number of ways.

He encourages people to stop by and see how things are progressing.

“This is a beautiful old building with good bones” he says, “and I’m looking forward to seeing people enjoying it again.”

Muscadines Healthiest Grape Ever Tested!

The discovery that Muscadine grapes are naturally high in healthful antioxidants has led to an expansion of the Muscadine industry in North Carolina. Antioxidants help protect the body from the damaging effects of oxygen free radicals, which can contribute to degenerative diseases.

Source: College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, North Carolina State University Muscadines (vitis rotundifolia) are native to the southeastern United States and thrive on the heat and humidity common to the region. Muscadines are known for producing extremely high levels of Resveratrol, an antioxidant that blocks the negative effects of unstable molecules, called free radicals, that occur naturally in the human body. Free radicals are known to cause cell damage and have been linked to heart disease, stroke, signs of aging, and certain types of cancers and macular degeneration of the eye. For this reason, Muscadine grapes are currently being sought after as a renewable source for Resveratrol and have been deemed nature’s healthiest grape.

In order to understand the magnitude of the discovery of potent and powerful antioxidants in the Muscadine Grape, one must understand a little about free radicals.

The body’s natural metabolism produces oxygen free radicals which are unbalanced oxygen atoms (atoms with a missing or un-repaired electron.) These free radicals are predators in the body that try to replace the missing electrons by raiding and extracting electrons from other molecules. This raiding and extraction damages all DNA and tissue contacted until stopped by antioxidants and enzymes produced naturally by the body. As we age, our body’s production of antioxidants and enzymes decreases and we see symptoms of the battle against free radicals in wrinkles, age spots, and stooped posture.

Chronological age and physiological age are two different things. The human body is genetically designed to live to 120 years (physiological age). However, the average chronological age for women is 76, and it’s 74 for men.

There are several groups of people throughout the world who have members that live to be over 100 years old,

an extremely higher rate than the rest of the population.

Scientists believe that the primary reason these groups have so many more centenarians is due to dietary differences.

The U.S. National Institute of Health has determined that one of the primary causes of deteriorating health as we age is this relentless attack from free-radicals. It has been estimated that each cell in our body is attacked by freeradicals 10,000 times a day. With the body’s decreased production of neutralizing antioxidants and enzymes, another way to battle free-radicals is to eat plants high in antioxidants which the body can use to neutralize freeradicals and thus reduce the amount of damage our body suffers.

Buddy and Joe Bennett developed a love for cars early in life. One reason for that love was their Uncle Joe. He was a big influence on them growing up, and he had a fondness for cars. He even owned a Ford dealership in Burnsville, their hometown, and it was there that he taught Buddy and Joe a lot about cars … and business.

As grown men, Buddy and Joe found themselves living in Forest City and running their own separate businesses. Each man was establishing his place in the world, but neither ever lost that love of cars inspired by their uncle. “We worked on cars as money allowed,” says Buddy, “and I’ve always enjoyed trading cars.

Over the years we each collected quite a few.”

By the time the brothers retired from their businesses, they each had more cars and trucks than they had space to store them. “Both of us had cars stuck in different places,” Joe says with a chuckle, “The problem was, when you wanted to show a car to someone, it had dust all over it, and it might have boxes packed around it or even in it!”

“I dreamed of having a place to show the cars,” adds Buddy. One day, he realized he already had the place to do just that. There was a warehouse on his trucking company’s property that turned out to be the perfect place to display old cars and other antiques.

Joe and Buddy brought together their collections of cars and trucks and opened Bennett Classics Antique Auto Museum about four years ago. “We had a lot of help from the community,” Joe recalls. “Friends worked a lot of hours helping us arrange and re-arrange the displays.”

Today, the museum features 51 cars and trucks from 1913 to present day, including a 2011 Rousch Mustang currently on loan from Keeter Ford in Shelby. They even have a couple of their Uncle Joe’s cars on display.

The brothers have also collected farm tractors from several eras, children’s antique peddle cars, a pump organ, and a fire truck that served the Forest City community for 39 years.

In this day of remote starters and cars that talk to you, this museum is a history lesson for the younger generation. The brothers note that many of their visitors have never experienced a time when cars

didn’t have automatic door locks, seat belts or air conditioning, and when “rolling” down the window was a literal and not figurative task.

Strolling among the cars, you’re also reminded of what imagination, inspiration and determination can accomplish. It took all three traits to create the museum, but for Joe and Buddy, it’s been a labor of love. “We love what we do and we want other people to enjoy it,” says Buddy.

Indeed, many visitors have enjoyed the museum.

After being featured on UNC-TV, the museum experienced a notable increase in visitors. Buddy and Joe have met people from across the United States

and around the world, including Germany, Ireland, Africa, England and the Bahamas.

The museum’s guest book reflects visitors’ appreciation of the exhibits with comments like “Thank you for a wonderful tribute to the past,” ”What a grand surprise,” “Glad we found it” and “Beautiful trip back in time.”

Although the Bennetts have enjoyed hosting car clubs and visitors from many different places, they’d like to see more local visitors. “About 90 percent of our visitors are from out of town,” said Buddy, “We’d love to have more local people come by.”

One event offers a unique opportunity for locals

to enjoy cars and tour the museum. Each year, the museum hosts the kick-off of the Forest City Car Show, which takes place the third weekend in August.

During the Friday night kick-off event, visitors can enjoy the museum for half price, hear live music and stroll among the show participants’ cars.

If you’re lucky enough to meet Buddy and Joe when you visit, and maybe even take a tour with them, you’ll discover more than the horsepower under a hood.

You’ll find two brothers who enjoy being together and sharing their stories with others.

Buffalo Creek Gallery: Five Years Young words/ Laura Edington

L

ocated in the heart of Shelby is a unique business that caters to the artistic community. Named the Buffalo Creek Gallery, this cooperative art gallery was the brainchild of Ron and Beverly Mechling.

The Mechlings had been members of artist coop galleries in other communities and wanted to create an establishment in their new city where local artists, including themselves, could share and sell their artwork.

The Mechlings first met with the Cleveland County Arts Council and shared information with artists who might be interested in forming a cooperative art gallery. “We wanted a chance to meet other artists and to have a local gallery as an outlet for our work,” states Corine Guseman, a ceramic artist; painter Pat Edwards echoes her sentiment; both are current members of the gallery.

After several organizational meetings, a group of 24 artists came together to form the Buffalo Creek Gallery. On May 16, 2006, this core group of artists introduced themselves and their artwork to Cleveland County in their Warren Street location on the historic Courtsquare. They also accepted one consignment artist, adopted their by-laws, and voted officers into the board of directors they created to govern themselves. Currently, Buffalo Creek Gallery has 18 members, including over half of the original members, and 22 consignment artists.

What the Mechlings helped create, and what is still thriving today, is the only co-op gallery in the county with a family-like environment where artwork can be shaped, viewed and purchased.

Mort Couch, one of the current artists and a selfproclaimed jack of all trades, states, “It’s like coming home to another family.”

A cooperative gallery is one in which everyone participating literally shares space, bills and even manning the gallery during operating hours. Coop members earn money by the artwork they sell individually after they pay their share of the bills to keep the gallery running; they then keep what is left. The system the artists have in place

is extremely organized with a board of directors, a jury committee, contracts, by-laws and very clear expectations.

To become a member of Buffalo Creek Gallery, an artist much complete an application, pay a membership fee and have his or her work reviewed by the current members. Once accepted, they also help “staff’ the gallery when it is open. This helps with overhead and also serves to introduce the artists to customers.

One of the greatest benefits of being a member of Buffalo Creek Gallery is that the artist keeps a majority of the retail sale of his or her artwork. In traditional galleries the artist keeps only about 50 percent of the sales price.

One of the newest members, painter Ginger Spangler, decided to join because she missed having an outlet to show her work. Once the owner of a gallery herself, Ginger says she now enjoys being a part of a large artistic team.

Becoming a consignment artist also involves completing an application and having artwork reviewed by the jury committee. Consignment artists are not members of the gallery but still show and sell their artwork inside the gallery. Although the gallery keeps a greater portion of sales from these artists, their only responsibility is to make sure Buffalo Creek Gallery has a good display of their work. “We like to carry other people’s work to round out our own work,” explains Corine. crafted and meet the Buffalo Creek Gallery’s standard of excellence.

“We all love each other’s work,” says Terrie Melton, a painter and member of the gallery. “We feed off of each other,” Corine says, “We share our ideas, accomplishments and difficulties with our own art.”

Every member is tremendously supportive of each other and of the community.

The gallery hosted its fourth annual Jewelry Trunk Show in February and over 17 outside artists came and displayed their artwork. The gallery also sponsors and organizes Arts On The Square, an outdoor art show and sale that will take place on April 30 on the court square and which will showcase over 40 artists this year. This will be Buffalo Creek Gallery’s fifth year hosting the event and they take no percentage of the profits of those exhibiting. The gallery also sponsors numerous children’s art events including painting Christmas ornaments and helping with projects for Easter and the Fall Festival.

Buffalo Creek Gallery also helps organize the Art ‘Round Town Gallery Crawl in the spring and fall. The one this spring, scheduled for May 5, will be a very special event for the artists that make up this unique gallery as they will be celebrating their own five-year anniversary.

W

hat do you get when you mix brutality with a feminine twist? A vicious sport that goes by the name of roller derby.

Originally started in the 1930s, roller derby rose to fame in the 1970s before it all but disappeared from mainstream culture. When the sport resurfaced, it had transformed into a harsher, more competitive counterpart. “It’s real. Back in the ‘70s it was like wrestling, a stage fight. But we’ve moved away from that and it’s gotten more real. It gets very physical,” explains Linda Sewell, Vice President of the Charlotte Roller Girls (CLTRG).

Linda, a 39-year-old clinical aesthetician who works at a local dermatology practice during the day, has been on the Charlotte Roller Girls for over two years. CLTRG was formed in 2006, and their first bout was September 2007. Sewell got on the team by answering an ad in the newspaper, going to a meet-and-greet, and then trying out for a spot for the team.

Roller derby is an aggressive sport that consists of five players per team – one jammer, one pivot and three blockers. A derby bout is two 30-minute periods that are played in two-minute rounds called jams. The jammer, identified by a star on her helmet, is the one who scores the points. The pivot, identified by a stripe on her helmet, maintains the pace of the pack. When the referee blows the first whistle,

the pivots and blockers from both teams explode forward and begin to fly around the track. When the second whistle is blown, the jammers follow suit and must catch up to the pack. The first jammer through the pack becomes the lead jammer and scores one point for each opposing team member she passes.

According to Linda, one of the best things about roller derby is “the jamming and scoring. Well, getting lead jammer. When you are the jammer you control the game.”

Roller derby requires endurance, speed and strength which all come from the ruthless and unforgiving practices. “We practice five days, eight hours a week. We do squats, sprints, basically everything you do in a gym but all on skates,” Linda says. Every practice is a tryout; there are 60 girls that compete every week for one of the 14 spots on the team. While there are 500 teams nationally, there are two that form the CLTRG. The All-star team, the team Linda is on, and The B Dazzlers, the up-andcoming players.

With all the hard work that goes into being on the team, it is a wonder how Linda can manage her time.

“It’s not easy; there is no social life. Usually your social life is mixed in with derby life. Most of the girls have family that helps with the derby,” Linda comments.

She also points out that the team is “such a diverse group of girls. We have bankers, veterinarians, dog

walkers, but we are one big family.”

When the Charlotte Roller Girls are not at their day jobs, in practice, or competing in a bout, they volunteer their time and contribute to local charities.

Every year the team picks one charity to receive a percentage of ticket sales. In 2008, the team picked Friendship Trays; in 2009, the charity was A Child’s Place; and in 2010 it was the Humane Society.

For 2011, the team is just getting back into full swing and upcoming events include home matches against the Savannah Derby Devils on March 6 a double header on May 7 between the Low country High rollers and the CLTRG All-Stars in the first match and the Low Country High Rollers Brusin’ Betties vs. the CLTRG B Dazzlers in the finale. DEVINCE BOYKINS - Basketball - Forest City Devince, a senior guard at East Rutherford High School, poured in 37 points to lead the Cavaliers past rival R-S Central, 95-70, in the finale of the Cavaliers Christmas Classic basketball tournament. Devince, who was named tourney MVP, has received a full athletic scholarship and has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Marshall University.

KATHERINE PORTER - Golf - Shelby Competing in the North Carolina Senior Games at the Tanglewood Championship layout, Katherine claimed first place in the 85-89-year-old age division in the golf event.

CAMERON HARRIS - Football - Kings Mountain Cameron set a school record with 331 yards passing in a 20-17 win over archrival Shelby High School this past fall. He also threw for three TDs in the contest, including an 81-yard strike late in the contest that proved to be the game winner. His record-setting night was also the sixth best passing performance in Cleveland County high school football history.

CEDRIC THOMPSON - All-Purpose - Kings Mountain A senior at Kings Mountain High School, Cedric has been a very busy athlete this year. Most recently, he made eight three-pointers on his way to a 28-point night against Boiling Springs, S.C. in the Cleveland County Holiday Classic basketball tournament in December. Prior to basketball season, Cedric was named the Big South Conference offensive player of the year for the 2010 football season. He played wide receiver, quarterback and running back for the Mounties while amassing 1,836 yards and 21 TDs rushing, passing and receiving. He was also named to the local newspaper’s All-County football team.

he American League World Series held in Shelby in 2008 drew nearly 38,000 fans, the second highest attendance in World Series history. Cleveland County’s tourism director says the goal for the 2011 World Series - the inaugural event for the tournament for its permanent home in Shelby - is to set a record for attendance and economic impact. The Travel Industry Division wants to see at least 40,000 fans for the event, scheduled for August 12-16.

“That’s based on figures from before and also taking into consideration that this is the inaugural event of the World Series in its permanent home,” says Jackie Sibley, director of the County’s Travel Industry Division.

In 2008, Shelby hosted both the American Legion Southern Regionals and the World Series for an approximate $4 million boost to the county’s economy. Local organizers believe they can repeat that $4 million augmentation in 2011, even without any regional playoffs.

Jim Quinlan, national program coordinator for American Legion Baseball, says both the attendance and the economic impact projections are on target, or maybe a little on the low side. He cites the 1999 World Series in Middletown, Conn., and the results of a study by the Middlesex County Convention Bureau.

With fewer than 2,000 people per game, the city realized a $4.5 million economic impact during the week to 10 days of World Series activity. “I’m anticipating 4,000 to 5,000 people per game in Shelby, so we expect Shelby to even have a greater economic impact. I’m almost positive about every hotel in town is going to be sold out. And then the outlying communities are going to benefit -rental cars, the restaurant people. When you have 5,000 hungry fans in town, they can

only eat so many hot dogs (at the stadium).

Even though they’re outstanding hot dogs, you want to get away and have a little steak or ice cream from time to time.”

“Our primary goal is to make this into a World Series festival where it’s much more than ‘just a baseball tournament,’” says Eddie Holbrook, co-chair with Jim Horn of Shelby’s American Legion World Series Committee.

“Another major item we’re trying to do is make it into a regional event so people outside Cleveland County will be attending.

We want to do a good job of marketing from Asheville to Charlotte and from HickoryLenoir to Spartanburg-Greenville so it becomes regionalized. Another thing we’re doing is providing World Series tickets to Legion players in the region, hoping they will come and it will become a tradition for them to come and quite naturally, bring someone with them. By doing all that we greatly enhance economic development because there are more opportunities to spend money and more entertainment opportunities.”

“We’re just hoping if we do the job that we’re capable of doing, we’ll make it not just a tournament but also a vacation for the people coming,” says Jim Horn. “Hopefully, this will put Shelby more on the map. We would like Shelby to get the same recognition as Omaha (home of the College World Series) one of these days in the future.”

Because this year marks the debut of the World Series in its permanent home, there are six past National Commanders of the Legion and at least one member of the organization’s National Executive Committee attending says Jim Quinlan, plus more volunteers than in years past. “The number of people is going to be outstanding,” he says. “I’ve made room reservations for people from Washington,

Connecticut, California and Vermont.” Jim Horn says requests for game tickets are already coming in.

Improvements at Keeter Stadium, the site of the World Series, are now underway, with a new scoreboard, new dugouts, additional seating and the American Legion World Series Headquarters facility leading the list. By the time the eight teams vying for the championship arrive, there will also be additional lighting, improved sewer and water lines, new handrails in the seating area and improved grass and warning track. And of great importance, fans will again find highquality concessions at reasonable prices, says Jim Horn.

Here’s a brief schedule of planned events, starting with Monday, Aug. 8: Monday, golf tournament; Tuesday, Volunteer Appreciation Day; Wednesday, welcome reception for the teams and players’ parents; Thursday, World Series banquet followed by an outdoor concert by a nationally-known country artist; Friday, the games begin.

Kings MounTain broThers develop unique gin

A

t the time of its creation in Holland in the 1600s, gin was called genievre, the French name for the juniper berry, which gives the beverage its distinctive flavor. The English later shortened the name to gin and well-known brands from the United Kingdom include Gordon’s, Beefeater, and Tanqueray. All of those preceded Fleischmann’s, produced in New Orleans and marketed as the original American gin; it came into being in 1870.

There’s a new gin on the American market, and it’s available at a liquor store near you. In fact, it’s distilled near you. Cardinal American Dry Gin, a product of Southern Artisan Spirits in Kings Mountain, has been on liquor store shelves since November 2010. Southern Artisan Spirits is one of only three distilleries in all of North Carolina and the only one making gin.

Charlie Mauney, 29, who shares distillery ownership with his twin, Alex, says the brothers have plans for creating bourbon and brandies but gin was their first choice.

“We really like gin; it’s one of our favorite spirits,” Charlie says. “You don’t have to age it in a barrel; it’s a little bit cheaper on that side. We kind of hope the gin will pay later for aging things in barrels, making whiskeys and bourbons. We’ve done a little bit of product development with our brandies, but right now we’re trying to get our gin off the ground before we do anything like that.”

process. Charlie and Alex researched recipes from as far back as the 1700s. “It took us about a year to nail a recipe down,” Charlie says. “We started with a basic recipe and tweaked it to make it our own. We used different herbs and botanicals, some which have probably never even been used in gin before. We didn’t want to make a replica of another company’s gin; we wanted our own flavor.”

The Kings Mountain ABC store reports repeat purchases of Cardinal Gin, and in December 2010 the Mauneys won a silver medal in the New York International Spirits Competition, the highest medal awarded in their price category. The 84-proof gin, which sells at $29.95 for a 750ml bottle, will be entered in another international competition in San Francisco during March.

Researching and tweaking a recipe to perfection wasn’t the only time-consuming project for the young entrepreneurs. Local approval of their facility by the fire marshal and acquisition of federal and state permits took a year of planning and “about a year of jumping through all the hoops with the government,” Charlie says.

The hard work continues. “Doing small batches is a lot more labor intensive,” Charlie says. “It’s pretty exhausting. When we fill bottles, it’s one bottle at a time. We do everything by hand.”

At the time of this writing, the Mauneys were working to get bonding for an additional 6,000 square

feet in their facility for a total of 9,000 square feet. The distillery is housed in the former home of the familyowned Mauney Hosiery Mill, which ceased operation in 1999. The Mauneys have been major contributors to the Kings Mountain area economy since Charlie and Alex’s great-great-great grandfather Jacob S. Mauney helped found the city in the 1870s and participated in launching its textile industry in the late 1880s.

“We’d like to get the support of all the local ABC stores, bars and restaurants throughout the local communities,” Charlie says. “Foreign conglomerates, that’s pretty much the gin industry. Hopefully, people will start buying local gin.”

The original genievre was created by Dr. Franciscus Sylvius of the University of Leyden for medicinal purposes because of the juniper berries reputation as a diuretic. Today, gin is being touted as a relief for arthritis because juniper berries contain terpinen, which has anti-inflammatory properties. A popular treatment calls for arthritis sufferers to eat nine ginsoaked golden raisins per day; the raisins also have anti-inflammatory chemicals. Charlie says he’s heard of this recipe and with a note of humor adds, “I hope everybody uses Cardinal Gin to soak their raisins.”

Economic Gardening in Downtown Kings Mountain worDs/ ADAM HINES In my last article, I shared with you five keys to growing your own business, essentially trying to plant seeds that will grow our local economy. This process is often referred to as economic gardening. In this issue we will focus on the fruit of gardening with patience, a harvest in its time, more than 10 years in the making.

Kings Mountain’s Downtown is our garden, the current market opportunities and existing buildings make up our soil, the seeds are new business startups and promoting and marketing is watering and weeding until fruit is apparent. 2011 looks to bring a fruitful harvest in Kings Mountain’s downtown with three restaurants scheduled to open, an expansion and in-migration of a local attorney’s office and an accountant’s office, the creation of 70 or more jobs, $3 million of new capital investment, 6 vacant buildings rehabilitated and put back to productive use, and seven building façade improvements.

So how did such a fruitful harvest for downtown Kings Mountain come to pass?

Using the five points I recommended for individual businesses in the last article, Kings Mountain’s civic and governmental leaders have worked with property and business owners for 10-plus years to develop a business plan, analyze markets and products, evaluate real estate needs, create marketing and advertising plans, and improve our accounting methods. Simply put, our business is to grow yours, and like any business, we also need to follow the five-step process.

TILLING THE SOIL Since 2000, Kings Mountain Community leaders have persistently cultivated the soil of downtown revitalization through the creation of a municipal service district tax in 2003, creation of the non-profit entity The Mountaineer Partnership (MPI) in 2006 to lead downtown revitalization efforts, development of a strategy plan in 2007, making lawful the sale of liquor by the drink in 2009, securing Main Street status

and $651,000 in grant dollars in 2010. The 10 years from 2000 through 2010 were the planning years that lead to the success we are now having with business recruitment and generation in 2011.

PERIODIC SOIL EVALUATION In 2007, the economic soil was tested with and economic analysis using ESRI zip code sales data. In

WATERING THE SEEDLINGS MPI is working in tandem with the Kings Mountain Herald to implement the 2010 Main Street recommendations to grow existing businesses through continuous advertising and “buy local” initiatives. An advertising workshop for all Kings Mountain businesses in February is to be followed by a 26-week, continuous ad campaign targeting specific market segments to capture some of the $34 million in lost retail opportunity identified last summer.

We found sufficient demand ($34 million dollars of un-captured retail sales in a five-mile radius around downtown) largely in five categories: Food Service/ Restaurants - $8 million, Clothing - $4.6 million, Furniture/Appliances - $5.5 million, and General Merchandise - $13.9 million.

PLANTING THE SEEDS 2009 and 2010 were spent seeking out and securing business expansion and start-up nutrients in the form of grant dollars. Our soil, the current building stock, needed to be brought back to healthy and

MPI hired Capital Development Services in 2010 to help create a long-range fund development plan. The result was the 2011 “Turning Point” Fund Development campaign now underway with a goal of raising $80,000-$100,000 over the next 12 months.

I hope our own example of how we put the tools of economic gardening to good use is an encouragement to you. If we can grow a downtown, you certainly can grow a business.

halls are alive with the sound of music!” This minor tweaking of the lyrics from Julie Andrews’ famous opening song from “The Sound of Music” probably wouldn’t bother her if she visited a Shelby church’s pre-school program. And odds are she’d be especially pleased to see and hear their unique music program, conducted in the church’s educational wing.

Kid’s Place, a 20-year-old outreach ministry hosted by Central United Methodist Church, is a prekindergarten school teaching children, among other subjects, the joy of music through the Music Together program. School director Shelley Rempson and the church’s music director, Danny Buckner, became enthralled with the national program through a flier they received early in 2009. Before that, Danny was handling the music component of the pre-school’s curriculum single-handedly, but thought this new approach might provide more benefit to the children.

“My own two girls were taking Suzuki violin lessons with Morgen Champney, wife of Shelby High’s music director, John Champney. “It was through this connection that we discovered she was a certified Music Together specialist who had received her training with Music Together co-founder, Lili Levinowitz,” explains Danny. After receiving Kid’s Place board approval and a grant from the church’s Legacy fund, the team launched a pilot program for the Pre-K class in the fall of 2009.

The Music Together program, a new opportunity for children in Cleveland County and a first for any of the county’s preschool programs, enables the 45 current students to explore many different musical styles and genres through age-appropriate movement and play.

“Music Together provides children a ‘musical vitamin’ in a world where much of what they may be hearing sounds relatively the same,” Morgen says.

Parents pay a nominal additional fee together with their tuition cost for the pre-school program to cover Champney’s involvement, but the results seem worthwhile. “I have my own four girls in the program and it’s really exciting to see how much they’re learning and the big impression the music is making in their lives,” Shelley exclaims. Danny, too, sees the positive results. “Today we are largely a society of music consumers passively receiving our music through our iPods,” he says. “It’s such a joy to participate in a class and watch the kids laugh, dance, sway, sing and move about the room becoming music makers.”

And, the music continues at home after the children leave school. The program provides recordings and songbooks so parents can reinforce what their kids have learned that week. According to a Music Together overview, the “music experiences provide adults with a new arena for observation, evaluation and appreciation of their child’s cognitive, emotional, social and physical development.” Further, “the joy of extended family music at home and in school creates a natural circle of learning that builds parent/child, parent/teacher, and parent/school relationships.”

The Princeton, N.J.-based program’s newsletter cites many examples of children blossoming within the program. A state and federally funded study designed and evaluated by an educational think-tank group for Head Start classes reports …”children in the Music Together classes made statistically significant gains in cognitive, language and physical development.” One Head Start teacher observed that …”on numerous occasions, a child who has not been talking in class has begun speaking during Music Together time, giving verse ideas for a song or talking about a songbook picture.”

So, music is good for the soul, even for the very young, in ways that continue to surprise us all.

ome days it seemed that spring would never return! Winter threatened to stop us, but luckily, Uptown Shelby thrived during the holidays and even during the usually quiet winter months. And recently, we’ve seen some new activity in retailing and dining that adds to the variety of businesses in the historic heart of Shelby including a new children’s clothing and gift shop called Cuddlebugz, NiFen Wine and Tapas as well as a home textiles shop named Linen World.

As spring finally becomes the reality of our winter hopes, there are a few suggestions we can offer for getting the most enjoyment from your visits to Uptown Shelby.

Being outdoors inspires all of us to become more active. Sunshine also lifts the spirits in a big way. The Uptown Shelby Walking Routes are a great series of trails to help build up endurance and improve physical health. The Alliance for Health has three measured circuits that center and begin on historic Court Square, with signs to guide you along the way. It’s free and you can hit the trails any time you feel the urge.

A one-mile loop includes a walk around the Shelby Middle School campus. The two-mile trail takes walkers past the entrance to City Park on Sumter Street before heading back to the Square via Marion Spring in the Park: Crowds enjoy the booths at last year’s Merry-Go-Round Festival at the City Park. were experiencing throughout the country as malls were being built and attracting most of the larger retailers away from the downtown areas, leaving a ghost town of empty buildings.

It was through Ted’s leadership that Shelby quickly became a model for other cities resurrecting their uptown areas. The current USA Director, Wade Nichols, has acknowledged that Ted helped to lay the groundwork for the continued success going on in our uptown area today.

Ted’s love of Shelby is likely what initially led him to seek the position of mayor. He recently announced he will not be seeking re-election to a third term. I wanted to acknowledge Ted’s commitment and contributions to his community through his many years of service.

nytime someone displays a desire for certain positions of power and influence, many of us tend to look upon him or her with skepticism or suspicion. We can easily list countless examples of people who have used their positions for self-gain and their personal agendas. Chance of a Lifetime words/ REv. CRYSTaL ChampION

everal months ago, a friend mentioned to me that she and her husband were considering allowing their sixth-grader to travel to Italy for six weeks with a school group as part of an advanced learning experience. “It’s a chance of a lifetime,” she said.

A woman wins a large lottery that will provide money the rest of her life … chance of a lifetime. A family wins a trip to Disney World … chance of a lifetime.

Most of us can name our chance of a lifetime. And it would vary considerably. Our chances of a lifetime are a reflection of who we are, who we represent and who

we are becoming. Many would say that their chance of a lifetime would be finding employment again, able to exist without public assistance. Others would spend years saving money for trips to take when they finally retire.

My closest friends have traveled all over the world, bringing me beautiful artifacts from many countries.

Sometimes when I hear their stories of experiencing other cultures and lives, I feel as though I have been there myself. I enjoy viewing their media presentations with the beauty held in their hearts and minds. I look on my desk at a set of bookends skillfully carved by an African. Somewhere I have the picture that shows

the craftsman with his barefooted children at his feet as he carves. I treasure the chance of a lifetime of my family and friends.

I wonder if many of our “lifetime” moments are overlooked or not recognized as such. What if our chance of a lifetime consisted of things like being able to read, or having a free education, food, safety, warmth and friendship?

And better yet, what if our chances of a lifetime consisted of the magical moments that we hold on to?

Many of these magical moments for me include my many nieces and nephews. I remember teaching Brooke to ride a bike. I remember Dusty’s precious laugh as a toddler. I remember Katie jumping up and down on the bed with her blonde ringlets keeping the same rhythm. I remember Clay calling me “Aunt Mama.” I remember Taylor turning cartwheels as a soccer goalie. I remember three-year-old Jeth correcting my pronunciation of specific dinosaur names. I remember the first time Jenna played in her tree house. I remember the first time Brooke held her newborn son, Brigman, as he turned his head to listen to her voice. I remember the first time I held each one of them as I sang “Happy Birthday.” I remember giving four of them their first baths. I remember baptizing, Jeth, Jenna and Brigman into the Lutheran church.

These are some of my personal chances of a lifetime.

As a chaplain, I have attended over 300 deaths. To be with those families and those dying was indeed a chance of a lifetime. Each moment I spend with hurting children is a chance of a lifetime as well.

The chances surround us each day … a sunset, a full moon, a magical look on your child’s face, saying goodbye to a loved one who has suffered and is ready to leave this world … all of them wonderful and holy chances of a lifetime.

It’s difficult to ignore the message from the Christian faith on this subject: Jesus lived his entire life for the chance of a lifetime to sacrifice his life; but look at all the chances that came to Him before the ultimate. He took every opportunity presented to live life fully and with purpose. Don’t miss your chances of a lifetime while waiting on the big one.

Having someone love you unconditionally, someone protect your every move, someone bring you joy without measure, someone who with every breath teaches you how to love … a chance to a lifetime.
