Welcome to Kingston

First recorded in a document in 838 the medieval market town of Kingston is now a colourful mix of unique shops, themed markets, street performances and numerous cafés, bars and restaurants.

And with its thriving arts scene, children’s festivals, great nightlife and riverside location, Kingston is a popular shopping and entertainment destination.

Situated on the banks of the Thames, Kingston is just 12 miles from the Centre of London and a 25 minute train ride from Waterloo. It’s within easy access of Kew Gardens, Richmond and Bushy Parks, and has a number of popular family attractions right on its doorstep including Hampton Court Palace, Wimbledon Tennis and Chessington World of Adventures.

The year 2014 commemorates the start of World War One and also Shakespeare’s 450th birthday. Learn more about Kingston’s involvement in WW1 at both the Rose Theatre and Kingston Museum from May to October.

The inspiration for the HMV (’His Master’s Voice’) logo, Nipper was buried in 1895, at the spot where Lloyds is today.

There is a plaque inside the bank commemorating him and a nearby street has been named Nipper Alley in his honour.

Kingston has been home to bustling markets for over 800 years. Visit the ’Ancient Market’ for gifts and fantastic displays of fresh fruit and vegetables, and the ’Monday Market’ for florists, butchers and greengrocers. Make sure you look out for visiting markets.

Follow the Thames Path towards Hampton Court or Richmond or take a stroll along Queens Promenade. Enjoy stunning views of the river and wildlife such as water voles, swans and dragonflies.

Famous past residents include Enid Blyton, Charles Dickens and Charlie Chaplain. Eric Clapton studied stained glass design at Kingston before becoming a musician, Julian Clary was born in Surbiton and Ronnie Wood lived for a number of years on Kingston Hill.

20 Royalty 22 Dragon 24 Hunt Boats for Antiques Seven Saxon Kings are thought to have been crowned in Kingston. The Coronation Stone, Kingston’s most historic landmark, sits in the grounds of Guildhall near the 12th century Clattern Bridge.

Book into a top restaurant – from big names like Jamie’s Italian, Wagamama and Byron to independents such as Woody’s, Al Forno and Cappadocia. Head for Charter Quay for a choice of al fresco dining, including Carluccio’s and The Slug & Lettuce.

Indulge in some retail therapy in Kingston’s superb shops for luxury brands and high street fashion – Jo Malone, Heal’s, Space NK, Bentalls department store, John Lewis, Topshop, Monsoon, Next, H&M, Zara and Gap as well as quirky, independent boutiques.

In July each year, Kingston hosts its own Dragon Boat Challenge. With teams from across the country competing, this unique event features drums, lots of excitement and colourful boats.

The Kingston Antiques Centre on Old London Road features more than 100 dealers offering an amazing array of antiques and quality vintage items.

23 25 Falling Christmas over Activities phone Boxes Free family entertainment, with choirs, Christmas street entertainers and Father Christmas switching on Kingston Town Centre’s Christmas Lights. The Rose Theatre also stages an excellent Christmas show.

HEAD FOR THE SHOPS With over 500 stores, two shopping malls and bustling market place it’s easy to see why Kingston is the top of the list for dedicated shoppers.

With the late night shopping and a stunning riverside location, Kingston keeps its small town feel whilst giving you all the choice you’d normally get in London’s West End.

Kingston was established as a market town more than 800 years ago. Today, the town is a thriving shopping destination with shopping malls, department stores, high street stores, top name brands and quirky independent boutiques. Not to mention the regular and visiting markets.

SHOPPING The large retail areas like Eden Walk Shopping Centre, Clarence Street and The Bentall Centre are just a few minutes’ walk from each other. Here you’ll find a vast mix of stores offering designer brands, high street fashion, homeware, cosmetics, technology and everything you need for kids. Apple, Zara, Primark, Lakeland, Marks & Spencer and Heal’s are just some of the stores you’ll find. Both department stores – John Lewis and Bentalls – carry a wide range of brands. Many stores further extend their opening hours in the run up to Christmas.

MARKET AREA For a change of pace, wander through the Ancient Market Place and the surrounding lanes and you’ll discover fresh fruit, vegetable and flower stalls surrounded by niche retailers like Reiss, Jack Wills, Whistles, Links of London, Hobbs and The White Company.

Along Thames Street you will find Cath Kidston, Jo Jo Maman Bébé and wedding boutique Jane Jordan.

CLARENCE STREET Pedestrianised Clarence Street is at the heart of Kingston’s shopping area with John Lewis situated at its river end.

The street is home to a huge range of high street names to suit all tastes and pockets, including Bank, Monsoon, River Island, Gap and Schuh. For the more active shopper, take a look at North Face or Cotswold. And for the football fan the Chelsea Football Club shop is a must.

The Bentall Centre is located midway down the street and serious shoppers might want to start their day here. There are over 80 shops to discover including Apple, Cos, Zara and Pandora. In the centre you’ll also find Bentalls, Kingston’s premium department store, and home to an exclusive range of luxury brands including Paul Smith Black, Ralph Lauren, DKNY and Hugo Boss.

MARKETS

Open Monday to Saturday Kingston’s Ancient Market is renowned for its fantastic displays of fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and fish.

Open every Monday from 9am–1.30pm in the Cattle Market Car Park

Webster’s Fishmongers is one of the longest established stalls on the market, and has been trading in Kingston since 1866. Visit the stalls opposite All Saints Church for fresh take-away food. Mohammed, owner of Exotic Tangine, sells the finest Moroccan food around, whilst Namu sells modern Japanese food like sushi. The Ancient Market Place is also home to key events throughout the year.

With its wide range of ever-changing stalls, the Monday Market is the perfect place to grab yourself a bargain before heading off to the nearby library, museum or leisure centre.

The market can accommodate up to 50 traders including fresh fruit and vegetables, a butcher, and a jewellery and watch stall – perfect if you’re looking for a gift for that special someone. Plus there are new traders arriving weekly, so you can always find something different every time you go.

EDUCATION

Students are at the heart of the town of Kingston upon Thames. Home to Kingston University London, Kingston College and a number of prestigious schools, the town is always buzzing with new students every September.

Kingston University London has over 110 years of history in the town, with just over 21,000 students studying at the University in 2013. Previous alumni include Glenda Bailey OBE (Editor in Chief, Harper’s Bazaar US), Lawrence Dallaglio OBE (International rugby player) and Andrew Haines (Chief Executive of the Civil Aviation Authority).

Kingston University’s vision is to be internationally recognised for a creative approach to education that has practical outcomes which benefit people and communities. COMEDY

Kingston is home to three comedy clubs: the Rose Theatre’s Comedy Store, which hosts a range of comedians on the last Sunday of each month, Outside the Box at the Fighting Cocks, which has featured stand-up from a host of comedy legends, including Robin Williams and Bill Bailey, and the Crack Comedy club located at the iconic Grey Horse pub.

MUSIC

The Rose Theatre’s Culture Café has live music sessions from all genres throughout the year, whereas All Saints Church provides a stunning venue for classical concerts and choral works. Or, on summer Sundays, why not pull up a deckchair next to the Canbury Gardens Bandstand and enjoy a free concert or two? Or head to independent record shop Banquet Records (See page 12).

GALLERIES

Kingston’s vibrant arts scene is showcased through its galleries. These include the Castle Fine Art Gallery in Fife Road, which showcases a selection of limited edition and original art from some of the UK’s leading artists.

The Stanley Picker Gallery at Kingston University, supported by Arts Council England, is nationally recognised for its interdisciplinary programme of Fellowships, exhibitions and public events, which expand far beyond the Gallery venue, as online projects, offsite activities, special editions and publications. Our innovative Kingston Navigation Wheel, specially commissioned in 2012 by designer Paul Farrington for local residents and new visitors, is still available as a free edition from the Gallery.

THEATRE Taking its inspiration from the Elizabethan Rose Theatre on London’s Bankside, Kingston’s 900 seater Rose Theatre is a spectacular and inspiring venue. Catch a well-known performance featuring West End actors, have a night of laughs at the Comedy Store, or watch a home-grown play.

In January 2008 the Rose first opened its doors to the general public. It’s a spectacular and inspiring venue offering a unique theatrical centre to the entire region.

To coincide with Shakespeare’s 450th birthday, the Rose will be home to Propeller’s version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Comedy of Errors in March.

Also visit the nearby 300-seater Arthur Cotterell Theatre at Kingston College, which features a variety of exciting performances and is a centre for the college’s creative work.

OUR ROYAL ANCIENT HERITAGE MARKET PLACE One of only five Royal boroughs in England and Wales, the medieval market town of Kingston upon Thames is steeped in history and intrigue.

The name Kingston is derived from Kinges Tun, meaning a royal farm or estate. It was first referenced in a document dated 838, regarding a royal council presided over by King Egbert.

The town has royal links dating back over a thousand years, with seven Saxon Kings thought to have been crowned here. The Coronation Stone, Kingston’s most historic landmark, now sits in the grounds of Guildhall near the 12th century Clattern Bridge.

Kingston’s first market was recorded in 1242 and it has been a major trading centre since 1170 when the ’new town’ was laid out south of an existing settlement around All Saints Church.

Many of the Royal Charters relate to markets and fairs, including one granted by King John.

This has been strengthened by several Royal Charters since then, notably one granted by Charles I in 1628 forbidding any other market to be held within a seven-mile radius. Today there are two permanent markets in the town and regular visiting markets.

OUR ROYAL ROoTS

In old English, Tun meant farmstead or settlement so the name Kingston appears to mean farmstead of the Kings. This royal settlement can still be seen in the shape of the churchyard of All Saints Church. It was here that the first King of England was earlier crowned King of Mercia and Wessex. Early sources claim that at least seven of the old Saxon Kings were crowned at Kingston, namely Edward the Elder, Athelstone, Edmund I, Aedred, Eadwig, Edward the Martyr and Ethelred the Unready.

KINGSTON MUSEUM The Kingston Museum and Heritage service consists of a museum, a local history room and an archive service.

The Museum is in the centre of Kingston in a beautiful custom built building erected in 1904. It has three permanent exhibitions: Ancient Origins, Edwaerd Muybridge and Town of Kings, which tells the story of the borough in Saxon times. Kingston archives and local studies collection located at North Kingston Centre on Richmond Road are unique resources that have built up over many years and are widely used by local historians, genealogists, schools and colleges.

So, delve into our history!

Muybridge and Kingston Kingston is the birthplace of Edwaerd Muybridge, one of the world’s most innovative and influential photographic pioneers, whose extensive studies of humans and animals in motion play a critical role in the history of photography and the moving image.

Muybridge left his personal collection to Kingston Museum and archive where it continues to inspire us to this day. The collection includes Muybridge’s original Zoöpraxiscope projection machine and unique glass discs, personalised lantern slides, original 19th Century prints, Muybridge’s own scrap book and many other items that make this collection of major international significance.

ALL SAINTS CHURCH Situated in the heart of Kingston, there has been a church on this site since the 9th Century when it was originally part of the Saxon Royal estate. Seven Saxon Kings are said to have been crowned here in the 10th Century. Inside the Church, monuments, plaques, statues and stained glass windows tell the story of the town over the last 1,000 years. Including a 17th Century marble font attributed to Sir Christopher Wren and a memorial chapel to the East Surrey Regiment.

A major restoration project has begun which will restore this Grade I listed building and incorporate a new community space.

WORLD WAR ONE 2014 marks the 100 year anniversary of the start of WORLD WAR ONE.

KINGSTON’S AVIATION HISTORY For much of the last century, Kingston was a world famous centre for the design of military aircraft and 2012 marked the centenary of Thomas Sopwith moving his factory to Canbury Park Road in Kingston. Here the Sopwith and Hawker companies and finally British Aerospace, who were the largest employers in town, created a succession of fighter aircraft.

Most famous were the Sopwith Camel, used during the 1st World War, and the Hawker Hurricane which was crucial to victory in the Battle of Britain. The jet age brought the Hawker Hunter and later the uniquely innovative Harrier Jump Jet was developed. The Hawk Jet trainer is still used by the RAF Red Arrows aerobatic team today.

The Kingston born author of The Forsyte Saga and Nobel Laureate John Galsworthy is best known for his novels and plays that dramatized social class in Edwardian England, but his campaigning for injured servicemen from the First World War has gone almost entirely unnoticed until now.

From September 1st to October 31st, the Rose Theatre will be hosting an exhibition called Galsworthy and Human Battles on the Home Front. The exhibition will showcase the author’s letters, poems and journals, alongside local memorabilia from the home front in Kingston.

Kingston’s Riverside The Queens Promenade walk

Queens Promenade, named after Queen Victoria, who often came through Kingston on her way to Claremont House in Esher, is approximately 1.5 kilometres long and runs from Ravens Ait to just beyond Kingston Bridge.

This walking guide starts at Town End Pier and finishes at Turks Pier, and highlights the key points of interest along this attractive stretch of the river.

1 Turk Launches – Town End Pier

The Town End Pier is home to Turk Launches’ floating office, otherwise known as Aphrodite.

Turk’s boats that are not in use are moored here. Make sure you look out for the New Southern Belle, Turk’s largest vessel, with a colourful Mississippi theme.

2 Eagle Brewery Wharf

Eagle Brewery Wharf is an idyllic riverside spot to relax and unwind. It’s located next to The Ram pub and is a popular spot during the summer months. Woody’s Bar and Kitchen is just on the riverfront and it’s an alternative place to grab a bite to eat.

3 Rose Theatre

The Rose Theatre is a key arts centre in Kingston, and hosts an array of productions throughout the year. The 900-seat venue opened in 2008, with a design based on the Elizabethan Rose Theatre in London.

4 Charter Quay

The area was part of a Saxon royal estate, and was at the centre of the town during the medieval period, and later when Kingston was an important market town and inland port.

Today it’s home to a piazza and a number of restaurants including Carluccio’s and Browns Bar and Brasserie. It’s also a waterfowl conservation area.

5 The Pavilions and the Gazebo

En route to Kingston Bridge, are a pair of Grade II listed Edwardian pavilions on the left hand side.

These originally formed part of the riverside pleasure gardens, which were associated with Nuthall’s Restaurant (now Blacks).

6 Riverside KINGSTON

Look out for the new Riverside Kingston near Kingston Bridge, which will be home to Cau, Cote Brasserie, Bill’s and Busaba Eathai.

7 Kingston Bridge

The bridge you see today was built in 1828.

However, the original Kingston Bridge crossed the Thames approximately 100 feet downstream and dated back to at least the 12th century. The bridge was quite significant as it was the only bridge crossing the Thames apart from London Bridge until 1729. The road leading to the bridge was lined with stone walls, although the bridge itself was made of timber, and a toll system was in place until 1565 to pay for numerous repairs. By the early 19th century the timber structure was beyond repair and a new stone structure was built. The bridge was widened in 1914 to accommodate trams and again in 2001 to cope with heavier, modern traffic.

8 John Lewis Memorial

In 2010, John Lewis celebrated the 20th anniversary of its store opening in Kingston and to commemorate the occasion the

company commissioned a mosaic which was created by more than 300 volunteers. The mosaic depicts three iconic scenes along Kingston’s riverfront.

9 Undercroft

Underneath the current John Lewis store are the remains of a medieval undercroft.

This barrel vaulted cellar used to be part of the old Rose and Crown Inn which was on the main thoroughfare to the timber bridge.

Archaeologists excavated the vault, and it’s preserved along with the remains of the old bridge in the John Lewis basement.

10 Turk Launches – Turks Pier

Turk Launches has been in operation for 300 years and is one of the major riverboat companies along the River Thames. This is Turk’s main pier in Kingston and here you can board boats to Hampton Court and Richmond. It’s a great alternative to more conventional transport.

11 Continuing your Journey

Kingston runs along the Thames Path walkway which connects Kingston to Hampton Court Palace, Teddington and Richmond. These are all within walking distance of the Town Centre.

Entertainment and Dining Kingston has a vast array of cafés and restaurants offering mouth watering cuisine. In the evening there is a real buzz with lively clubs, traditional pubs, cool bars and the latest movies.

Kingston Dining Italian? American? Indian or Japanese? Whatever you fancy eating you’re guaranteed to find something to satisfy the most demanding of tastebuds. Tree-lined Castle Street offers plenty of cafés where you can sit and watch the world go by.

Pre-theatre Dining Towards the Rose Theatre, there are a variety of independent restaurants alongside high street names. Try Wagamama, Stein’s, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Pizza Express and La Tasca. Or try Riverside Vegetaria, for an extensive vegetarian and vegan menu.

The Rotunda For family and pre-cinema dining, the Rotunda has a good range of restaurants, including Five Guys, Frankie and Benny’s and Cattle Grid.

Choose from one of the many bars and restaurants or catch the latest blockbuster movie at the Odeon Cinema. There are 14 screens available, including an IMAX. Don’t forget the popcorn!

Travelling to AND AROUND Kingston

By Train

By Car

Kingston Rail Station is only 25 minutes from London Waterloo and has regular services to Kempton Park, Twickenham and Wimbledon. Alternatively, nearby Surbiton Station is 20 minutes to London Waterloo.

Both stations are in Zone 6, so you can use an Oyster card or 1–6 Zone Travel card.

Kingston Town Centre is 12 miles from Central London, only 8 miles from London’s M25, and close to the M3, M4 and the A3.

Follow Junction 10 on the M25 for the A3 and then follow signs for Kingston.

By Bus

Situated just 12 miles from central London, Kingston is well served by public transport and is close to Heathrow airport and London’s orbital motorway.

More than 40 bus routes serve Kingston Town Centre, including eight night buses.

They provide a frequent service to all parts of the Borough, other parts of Greater London, Surrey and Heathrow Airport.

Trains, planes and automobiles: getting to Kingston couldn’t be easier!

The nearest London Underground stations to Kingston are Richmond and Wimbledon on the District Line. From Richmond take a train or the 65 or 371 bus. From Wimbledon take a train or the 57 or 131 bus.

By Air Kingston is a half hour drive from Heathrow Airport. Or catch the express X26 bus which takes 30 minutes or the 111 or 285 buses for the more scenic, one hour route. Gatwick Airport is 45 minutes away by road.

Car Park Information Over 6,000 car parking spaces are available in Kingston, with many car parks charging a £2 flat rate after 6.00pm. Many of the Town Centre car parks carry the Park Mark Safer Parking Award – look out for the logo.

Parking restrictions are in force seven days a week – including Bank Holidays.
