Fresh produce of every kind is available from a plethora of exciting stalls which have their own impressive heritage; one of the oldest stalls is Webster’s Fishmongers which has been trading in Kingston since 1866.

Kingston’s Monday Market kickstarts the trading week in Kingston as over 50 traders descend on the Cattle Market Surface Car Park (next to Kingfisher Leisure Centre), offering their goods from 9am – 1.30pm. The stalls sell an abundance of produce and products, many of which are at bargain prices and there are new and exciting stalls arriving every week.

Regular traders and products include: > Traditional market stall holders such as florists, fishmongers, butchers, greengrocers, bakers, key cutters and cobblers > Vintage clothing, shoes and socks, books, cards, make up, mobile phone accessories, bric-a-brac > Fabric and haberdashery, cushions and net curtains cut to order, rugs, vacuum cleaner accessories and general household goods.

Kingston first appears in an agreement between King Ecgbert and Coelnoth, Archbishop of Canterbury, at a council held there in 838.

King Athelstan, King Ethelred the Unready and up to five other Kings were crowned in Kingston.

THE ReGENERATION OF

Kingston’s first market was recorded in 1242 and the town has been a major trading centre since 1170. The medieval Market Place is home to the Grade 1 listed All Saints Church and the 19th Century Market House.

Having stood the test of time for centuries, Kingston’s revamped Ancient Market will continue to draw the crowds with its fresh new layout providing 29 permanent stalls compared to the previous 25.

There will also be space for 24 exciting pop-up stalls featuring

mouth-watering treats and unique gift ideas.

Supporting the local economy, the market features local traders and produce, providing the essentials for a daily shopping basket, a tasty lunch, a treat for the weekend or a great gift – all without having to leave Kingston.

The new space will provide: • An attractive setting for a high quality market, surrounded by a diverse range of exceptional retailers • A welcoming place to meet with friends, day or night • A flexible space for events and special occasions

The Doomsday Book records that Kingston was part of King Edward the Confessor’s farm, together with a church, five mills and three fisheries.

Over the centuries, Royal Charters were granted to Kingston, which gave the town rights to operate a market.

King John granted the first charter in 1208. However, Charles I granted the most influential charter in 1628. He granted Kingston the unique right to a monopoly over markets within a seven-mile radius of the town.

Some of Kingston’s oldest-established industries were located around the Market Place, including malting, tanning and candle making. These industries have shaped the look of the Market Place today.

The annual football game held on Shrove Tuesday in the market place was banned in 1867 for being too riotous.

The Ancient Market Place has previously been the scene of proclamations, political meetings, festivities, games, fairs and the punishment of offenders.

An illustrated panel telling the story of the Market Place can be seen on the wall of Shrubsole Passage, opposite the Shrubsole Memorial.

The panel and the regilding of the numerals on the plinth of the Queen Anne statue were initiated by the ‘Group of 4’, comprising representatives of the Kingston upon Thames Society, Friends of Kingston Museum and Heritage Service and Kingston Tour Guides, with the support of Kingston Council and local businesses.

You’ll be able to engage with your favourite traders and get recipes to try using their produce. And you’ll learn about the history of Kingston Markets, up-coming events and future plans.

MEET THE TRADERS: AMY

Amy has been running the family stall for the past two years, but her family’s roots stretch back over 30 years at Kingston’s Market.

Thanks to Amy, you could run into your favourite Eastenders actor at the Kingston Market – her fresh fruit stall has been known to draw the likes of Peter Dean who played Pete Beale.

Amy specialises in fresh fruit at the Ancient Market.

You can get all your British

favourites there, plus more exotic treats from countries across the globe.

She serves local restaurants with produce as well as the general public, and in general Amy’s advice would always be to buy seasonally whenever possible, for best flavour and prices.

This season Amy’s favourite is strawberries. When buying strawberries you should always make sure that the green cap stem is still attached to the fruit. They should be firm and bright but avoid berries that are partly white. Store in a paper bag in the fridge for up to a week.

When do you think lamb is at its best?

Jimmy’s rack of lam

One of the attractions of a local butcher is being able to tell exactly where the meat came from. All our meat is from British farms and has been inspected, so we know it’s 100 per cent what it says it is.

What is your favourite cut?

My favourite has to be a prime rack of lamb. This consists of the first eight ribs of the animal, known as ‘the rack’.

The meat and fat are usually trimmed away from the tops of the bones before cooking, and this is known as ‘French trimming’. It’s one of the most expensive cuts of lamb but well worth the expense as it’s tender and loaded with flavour.

Ingredients

I prefer spring lamb – the meat is very tender and it is delicate and sweet, lending itself to simple recipes.

As the lamb matures the flavour develops and the meat has a deeper, richer colour. The intense flavour of autumn lamb complements more intensely flavoured recipes.

Which is best – the local butcher or the big supermarkets?

Jimmy Curran, who owns Jimmy’s Meat in the Ancient Market is the fourth generation of Butchers in his family. We talk to him about lamb.

What should we be looking for when we buy a cut of lamb?

Lamb meat and bones should be pink in colour. The rib bones from the middle of the carcass are good examples of this. Look for meat that is plump with creamy white fat.

How should we store fresh lamb at home?

Small cuts should be wrapped in greaseproof paper and can be refrigerated for up to three days.

Larger roasts can be refrigerated for up to five days before using.

What do you do with any leftovers?

Add some carrots and onions and make a shepherd’s pie - you can’t beat it!

• 1 rack of lamb • 1 onion finely diced • 2 cloves of garlic • 1 sprig of rosemary • Olive oil • Chopped parsley • Splash of vinegar • 1 lemon • 1 knob of butter Method Mix one crushed clo ve of garlic with the zest from the lemon, the rosemary and a splash of oil. Ma rinate the lamb overnight in the fridge.

Gently fry the onion s in a little olive oil wit h a finely chopped garlic clove for 5 minutes. Add a splash of vinegar and a kn ob of butter. Mashw ith a potato masher, season to tas te then set aside.

Heat up a griddle pa n over a high heat, drain off as much of the marinad e as possible then ch argrill the lamb on all sides, coo king for around 2 mi nutes on either side.

Take the lamb from the pan and rest on a plate.

Squeeze over the juic e of the lemon, drizzle with some olive oil and season . Carve the lamb, spr inkle with the chopped pa rsley and serve with roasted vegetables.
