Turner and The Sun Exhibition

Willis Museum and Sainsbury Gallery Escape to the gallery for a moment of joy! This modest exhibition celebrates J.M.W. Turner as the undisputed master of light and focuses on his lifelong fascination with the sun.

Witnessing the technicolour vibrancy of sunset, Turner explored the transformative effects of sunlight, and sought to replicate its life-giving energy in paint.

Combining naturalistic observation with imaginative flights of fancy, his light-drenched landscapes remain as dazzling today as they were for a contemporary audience.

Curated by Nicola Moorby, and with loans from Tate and rarely seen personal items, don’t miss your chance to see Turner on your doorstep in 2017.

Anyone Can Draw!

Willis Museum and Sainsbury Gallery This exhibition showcases the work of several local people who have a common interest in drawing.

We took part in a drawing course at the Willis Museum with the artist Ronnie Ireland.

Having learnt a great deal about different drawing techniques, we decided to form a group to enable us to keep practising.

Claire and Hazel like to use pastels and watercolour pencils, while Robin and Heather enjoy using graphite and black ink.

We have put our work into the exhibition alongside some work by new members, hopefully encouraging others to have a go!

The Basingstoke Project: An Artikinesis exhibition

Willis Museum and Sainsbury Gallery Artistic perspectives on a unique town.

Five artists take a close look at Basingstoke. One finds splashes of vibrant colour by the Loddon and makes a concrete pedestrian footpath symbol go walkabout in search of the Basingstoke Canal. Another finds fiery personalities in Popley and turns Eastrop Park into a colourful visionary landscape. Another finds industrial and architectural interest in West Ham, and modern humanity in Festival Place.

Another has a sci-fi noir vision of urban dwelling. One artist finds tranquil corners in which to create meticulous pen and ink drawings.
