A BRIGHT SEASON AHEAD

We hope you have had a great winter with a little less snow and rain than we experienced here at the Club Things are finally starting to warm up and we are looking forward to a bright season ahead. I would like to thank the many Board and Committee members for their hard work on the Club Restoration project While it will not be moving forward as proposed, we will be utilizing the thoughtful feedback we received to make plans for this season and enhancements within our normal capital budget planning

Installation has begun on the two new Padel courts, making us one of the first Clubs in the country to offer the popular sport. Our new Executive Chef, Arnold Kruck, began last week and is working hard to educate himself about the staff and the property One of his great strengths from his 20 years at the Park Avenue Club is a keen understanding and appreciation for the member experience. The Golf House opens for food service next week on Tuesday, April 2nd The full hours are posted here

As you will see throughout this issue of 1886 our professional staff has been hard at work creating new events and experiences for the membership From the Daddy-Daughter Brunch this spring to the many fishing derbies and boating enhancements Ted has planned down at the Boathouse, we are looking forward to a fun and energetic season.

From all of us at the Club we would like to thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you at the Club soon!

CLUBHOUSE

A MESSAGE FROM THE CLUBHOUSE

The 2024 season at the Club kicked off with a beautiful, snowcovered evening for the 120th Gold Racquets Gala at the Main Clubhouse where members and guests danced the night away while commiserating about the matches played!

With warmer days on the horizon, the Club is abuzz with excitement as we welcome our new Chef and open the Boathouse and the Golf Clubhouse on Saturday, March 30th and Tuesday April 2nd, respectively.

Last week, we published our first Boathouse Information booklet featuring pertinent information about the waterfront Please take time to read the information and complete the Activities Survey so that we can properly expand the Club’s rowing, sailing, and fishing activities!

As the Golf Clubhouse reopens its doors, we ’ re excited for members to once again enjoy live music on Friday evenings (beginning Friday, April 5th) and delight in the steakhouse dining concept, a hit of 2023

We wish everyone a great end to winter, and look forward to having everyone back for the 2024 season.

120TH GOLD RACQUETS

The 2024 Gold Racquets was one of the largest on record with 70 Court Tennis Matches & 71 Rackets matches played over the long President’s Weekend

Director of Racquets Tim Chisholm gave fair warning to the participants that matches will be played at all hours; and to the players credit only two pulled out for very good reasons, and we picked up three last minute players The prevailing opinion is that all players had a great time (this author did not hear much grumbling) with matches being played as early as 6 AM and as late as 1:30 AM

Key Statistics:

16 players in Court Tennis Singles, which is the maximum 61 players in Cuspidor Doubles Court Tennis (a new record)

36 players in Rackets singles

14 teams in Spittoon Rackets doubles

6 UK based players

9 players from Montreal

7 US clubs represented: Tuxedo, NY R&T, Aiken, Newport, Boston, Philadelphia & Washington.

2024 Junior Handicap

A small but enthusiastic group of Juniors played in the 2024 Junior Handicap Singles at the Tuxedo Club January 13th & 14th.

Hazel Christensen, Johnny Dawson, Walt Laukitis, Kurt Mueller & Calliope Yannuzzi participated in a Round Robin where all the juniors played 4 matches, with Johnny Dawson & Kurt Mueller earning the right to play each other in the Final

Based on the results of the round robin, Kurt was the favorite heading into the final, even with a slight handicap adjustment based upon Kurt going undefeated in the round robin portion of the event Kurt played an almost flawless final, and no matter what Johnny threw at him Kurt responded and earned a well-deserved title as 2024 Junior Handicap Champion.

2024 Parent-Child – converted to

2024 Family Handicap

No non-Tuxedo entries to the 2024 Parent-Child allowed for the conversion to a Family Handicapped Doubles event!

This change allowed for 12 teams to participate in a fun weekend of handicapped doubles Three team round robins saw the winners of each group and the team with the 2nd most games won move on to the semifinals

Maria Panico & Steve Klepper defeated Lindsay & Gavin Maxwell in an entertaining three set semi-final to earn their spot in the Final.

In the other semi-final, Johnny Dawson and ‘adopted for the weekend’ Dad Chris Heffernan defeated the Mother-Son pairing of Serena & Kurt Mueller in another three set thriller

The Dawson/Heffernan team proved to be too formidable in the Final, earning yet another three set victory and the title of 2024 Family Handicap Champions

2024 LORILLARD CUP

The Tuxedo Club vs The International Tennis Hall of Fame (Newport)

January 2024 saw the revival of the inter-city match named the Lorillard Cup between The Tuxedo Club and The International Tennis Hall of Fame (Formerly know as the National Tennis Club-Newport).

Tuxedo members are known for their hospitality towards out-of-town guests; but on this day Tuxedo sent Newport back north with their tail between their legs having lost 7 matches to 2 All nine doubles matches were played off HCP and in good spirits, but the Tuxedo team was too strong throughout the day

2024 WHARTON CUP

The 2024 Wharton Cup at The Tuxedo Club had a strong Tuxedo flavor with a few non-Tuxedo players sprinkled in for some spice!

Jeremy Kidde barely snuck into the draw with a 49 7 HCP, and as the #1 seed and prohibitive favorite he lived up to the HCP and seed by running away with the tournament only losing 3 games all tournament

The back draw final saw a rematch of a main draw first round match between Dave Christensen and Anwaar Spence. Anwaar got the best of Dave once again, but in what was the most competitive and entertaining match of the tournament!

2024 COURT TENNIS CLUB SINGLES CHAMPIONS

Ladies

Xanthe Ranger is the 2024 Ladies Court Tennis Singles Club Champion! In an entertaining final, Xanthe defeated Marie-Victoire Wickers in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Tennis House

Congratulations to Xanthe & Marie!

Men

Many times Club Champion Guy Devereux added another club title to his long list of accomplishments in Court Tennis and Rackets by defeating Dan Laukitis in the Men’s Singles Final. Dan made Guy work hard, but in the end Guy’s offense was too much to overcome

Congratulations to Guy and Dan!

COURSE UPDATE GOLF

I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome all of you back for the 2024 season Warmer weather is becoming more prevalent, and excitement is brewing within the Grounds Maintenance Department

The golf course experienced a normal roller coaster of weather patterns, but it is my pleasure to announce that all playing surfaces are in excellent health and are now breaking dormancy All closely mown turf has been mowed and rolled to start the growing season

We are pleased to announce that the putting greens will be opening Saturday, April 6th for the season That said, due to architectural changes completed in the offseason, 11 and 16 greens will remain temporarily closed until the sod work heals Temporary pin locations will remain in the approach area of those holes.

As of this week, our department has completed core aeration on all tees and approaches Fairway aeration was also nearly completed March 25th, with four wet fairways remaining to be completed “inhouse” as soon as conditions allow We still have some cultural practices to complete this spring, but a lot of the “heavy lifting” is nearly finished

Drill and Fill Putting Green Aeration is scheduled for April 22nd and 23rd, please be on the lookout for hole closures during that week

Our full-time staff has done a great job of completing a variety of projects on both campuses during the off season, while navigating floods, blizzards and cold conditions. We also have nearly 100% of last year ’ s seasonal staff returning this season

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy Easter weekend! We look forward to seeing all of you out on the golf course.
