I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying the last bit of fall weather before the snow arrives. As we continue with the preparations for the upcoming holiday season, I wanted to take a moment to highlight this issue of 1886, loaded with great photos from our 2nd Annual Regatta, Halloween Brunch, Hadden Tomes Party and more. These images capture the laughter, camaraderie, and culture that make Tuxedo so special. As we look forward to the upcoming holiday season, I want to remind everyone that we want you to consider the Club your second home to enjoy Thanksgiving and the winter holidays with your friends and family. Our professional staff is committed to making your experiences enjoyable, and we have a Thanksgiving celebration planned for groups of all sizes. We will offer multiple Sunday brunches in December, and I’m told that we even have a special guest lined up for the holiday event on Sunday, December 10th!

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE By Assistant General Manager Dan Britts & Events Manager Maura Lennon Happy Fall! We are thrilled to see so many of our members utilizing the Club and all it has to offer. Burgers and Craft Beer Thursday nights at the Main Clubhouse have been a welcome addition to the Club calendar (Bingo, too!). This casual night offers members a great place to unwind and catch dinner before the big game. Our burger menu is served 5:308:00pm. We hope to see many more familiar faces (especially at our Ugly Sweater Bingo night on December 14th!) soon.

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE CONT’D We reached new heights this fall with our fabulous Hadden Tomes 'Viva Las Vegas' celebration. As guests entered in their incredible costumes, they were greeted by an aerial silk artist followed by a signature martini that set the tone for the remainder of the evening. Casino games and delicious culinary selections scattered throughout the Clubhouse created an exciting energy for all that attended. Entertainment acts through the evening were engaging for all, and moving down to our 'High Rollers Lounge' to end the evening was the perfect end to such a grand celebration. With Food & Beverage services ending at the Golf Clubhouse Sunday, November 19th, we will be transitioning to our Winter Dining Hours at the Main Clubhouse: Thursday Burgers and Craft Beer 5:30pm-8:00pm, Late Night Menu until 10:00pm Friday 6:00pm-9:00pm Saturday 12:00pm-9:00pm Sunday 12:pm-3:00pm We look forward to seeing you this holiday season.

FROM THE BOATHOUSE By Boatmaster Ted Theissen
It has been another great season at the Boathouse! Our second annual Tuxedo 1886 Regatta brought great excitement to the Club with champion rowers from around the United Sates competing in a one-on-one knock out competition on Tuxedo Lake. The waters were a little choppy, but the athletes’ nerves were calm. Great races with great results, and this year’s men’s winner, Sorin Koszyk, went on to also win the renowned Head of The Charles only two weeks later. Michele Sechser who finished second for the ladies here at Tuxedo also won the open lightweight single at the Head of the Charles event. Having such great talent grace our waters will be even more exciting when we see many of these names appear at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Many thanks to the 1886 Regatta Stewards, Phil Tavani, Chris Mahan, Joe Ehrlich and Michael Martinov. We certainly look forward to another great Regatta in the fall of 2024.

FROM THE BOATHOUSE CONT’D As of November 4th, boating activities have ended for the season. This week, the final boats are being pulled from the Lake and winterized. The Club docks have been removed from the water, assessed for needed repairs, and stored away until the days again grow warm. April 1, 2024 is the expected date for the Boathouse to reopen and for a new season on the water to begin. Tuxedo Lake is among the best lakes for the sport of fishing. Throughout the season, young and old members alike have enjoyed this great pastime on kayaks, canoes, and the Fishing Skiff. New this year, guided fishing tours gave anglers intel on top fishing spots, casting skills and lasting lures that allowed them to land some big trout and bass. Our first Fishing Derby saw Joe Furlong take the win for ‘Largest Bass’ with a 3lbs 11oz smallmouth bass. He beat out Brad Crimi, who had the “largest bass he’s ever seen” but was unable to land it in the boat. Caden Pierson took the prize for ‘Biggest off The Docks’ with a 1lb 6oz bass. Looking ahead to next season, over 900 rainbow, brown, and tiger trout were stocked in the lake this past Tuesday, November 14th, to ensure that next year’s catch is most colorful. From all of us at the Boathouse, we wish you a happy and healthy holiday season.

TUXEDO CURRIED APPLE-CARROT SOUP Recipe Courtesy of Executive Chef Frederick Daniel, CEC
Serves 4 people. Ingredients 2 Tbs Olive Oil 1 Medium Onion, Chopped ½ Cup Celery, Chopped 2 Tbs Fresh Ginger, Peeled and Minced ¾ Tsp Curry Powder 5 Cups Vegetable or Chicken Broth 3 Cups Carrots, Peeled and Chopped (1 lb.) 1 ½ Cups Apple, Cored, Peeled and Chopped (2-3) Salt and Pepper to taste 4 Tsp Crème Fraiche 1 Pinch Aleppo Pepper Chopped Parsley and Basil for garnish

TUXEDO CURRIED APPLE-CARROT SOUP
Method Heat the oil in a 4-quart saucepan over medium heat. Add Onions, Celery and Ginger and sauté for 4 minutes or until vegetables have softened without browning. Reduce heat to low and add Curry Powder. stir for 1 minute, until fragrant yet not browned. Add Broth to the saucepan, followed by the Carrots and Apples. Stir Well. Bring soup to a boil and then reduce heat to simmer for 20- 25 minutes or until all ingredients are softened. Puree Soup in blender until smooth. Season with Salt and Pepper. Return the soup to the stove and over medium heat stir until a slightly thickened consistency is achieved, approximately 4-5 minutes. Pour soup into soup bowls. Top filled soup bowls with 1 Tsp Crème Fraiche, Aleppo Pepper, and a pinch of Chopped Herbs Serve immediately.

HADDEN TOMES 2023 Vegas came to The Tuxedo Club for Hadden Tomes 2023! A record 59 players participated in the handicapped doubles court tennis festivities throughout the weekend! The Racquets Committee at the Tuxedo Club should be applauded for their support of all the new players in Tuxedo, along with the strong junior program at Tuxedo represented by Hazel Christensen, Calliope Yannuzzi & Paul Nieuwerburgh. In addition to the strong contingent of Tuxedo players, Hadden Tomes 2023 had a group of 10 players from Lord’s along with players from Boston, Philadelphia, Newport, Aiken, New York & Washington D.C. Play began at noon on Friday finishing at 12:30 AM, started back up at 7 AM Saturday running right up to the start of the festivities at 8 PM, and then started again Sunday morning at 7 AM with all the players looking to qualify for one of the 12 spots in the Finals beginning at 3:30 PM on Sunday afternoon. The 12th and final spot came down to a hat draw between two players that tied with 22 points earned over the weekend.

HADDEN TOMES 2023 Tuxedo decided to play best of three, four game sets for the three flight finals…. which proved to be a crowd and player favorite with packed dedan seats for all three flights. Flight Results: Flight III Jeff Greenbaum & Maria Panico defeated Serena Mueller & Paul Nieuwerburgh in an all Tuxedo battle! Flight II Hazel Christensen (TUX) & Simon Halpern (LORDS) defeated Peter Bender (BOSTON) & Graeme Marks (LORDS) Flight I Rich Mueller (TUX) & Gordon McMorris (TUX) defeated Dan Laukitis (TUX) & Peter Cattermull (LORDS) A special THANK YOU to Jake Faulise & Adrian Kemp for all their hard work over the weekend keeping the event running smoothly and putting up with Tuxedo Racquets Director Tim Chisholm.

FROM THE TENNIS HOUSE By Director of Racquets Tim Chisolm
At the Tennis House we are excited about the next six months of action-packed racket sports at Tuxedo, and so I’ll get right to it! November kicked off with the ladies and gentlemen of The Tuxedo Club building momentum in platform tennis representing the Club in the WIPL (Women’s Interstate Paddle League) and MIPL (Men’s Interstate Paddle League). Both the men and women’s teams are always looking for new players, so please reach out to Tim Chisholm if interested in representing the Club. If you’re just interested in playing platform tennis socially; the men play every Thursday at 8 PM and keep your eyes peeled for the dates of platform tennis socials this season. Tuxedo members Hazel Christensen, Calliope Yannuzzi & Margaret Werner represented the Club November 10th -12th in Newport, RI, playing in the Anne Boleyn HCP Court Tennis singles event, check out the USCTA web-site www.uscourttennis.org for a tournament recap.

RACQUETS UPDATE CONT’D The annual Turkey HCP Court Tennis event is a member favorite held over the Thanksgiving weekend, and December kicks off with the 2nd rendition of ‘THE REVERSE’…a court tennis tournament played from opposite sides of the court which provides many different layers of entertainment for both the players and spectators. The annual USCTA dinner and auction will again be held at The New York Racquet & Tennis Club; and a little birdie has told me we may have a Tuxedo member taking home some serious hardware… stay tuned! Right before jolly ole Santa visits, Tuxedo will head to The Racquet Club of Philadelphia for an interclub match, hopefully including all racquet sports available in Philadelphia. January will be a busy month at Tuxedo as we will be hosting the USCTA Junior HCP-Parent Child event, National Tennis Club vs. Tuxedo interclub match and the Wharton Cup! A nice kick off to the New Year!

RACQUETS UPDATE CONT’D February brings the Men’s and Women’s Court Tennis singles club championships over Super Bowl weekend, followed the following weekend by Tuxedo’s premier racquets event….Gold Racquets! Please be on the lookout out for more information this winter. March brings Saint Paddles Day…the annually popular Men’s Paddle Member-Guest tournament. April events at the Club include the Men’s & Women’s Court Tennis Doubles Club Championships along with the Racquet Club of Philadelphia traveling to Tuxedo for a rematch of the December interclub competition. The Chicago Racquet Club will be hosting the Court Tennis World Doubles Championship at the end of April, where Camden Riviere will try and drag his anchor of a partner (Tuxedo’s Tim Chisholm) to their 5th World Championship as a pair. April brings an end to a very action packed season of court tennis with the conclusion of all the handicapped events, mixed doubles and silver fox along with the excitement of hosting the 2024 Ladies US Open. Please look for the finalized calendar of events for the next 12 months including paddle socials and club championships, pickleball socials and club tournaments, squash clinics, the hiring of one or two new assistant professionals and hopefully more news on the addition of a 7th racquet sport at the Club. COURSE UPDATE By Casey Klossner, Director of Agronomy
Thanksgiving is nearly upon us, frost delays are almost a daily occurrence, and it is once again time for the Grounds Maintenance Department to prepare the course for the winter months. Currently, fescue areas are being mowed down and cleaned to help reduce the weed populations and their density for next season. Soon, our irrigation system will be blown out and all course furniture will be brought inside so it can be refurbished by our staff over the winter. All playing surfaces have now been core aerified and cleaned, as per normal fall practices. Greens and approaches were sand topdressed as well. Once the sod on our putting surfaces begins to freeze, foot traffic will not be allowed and temporary pin locations will be installed into the approach areas in front of the greens. At this point, our staff will be heavily top-dressing the greens with sand to protect them for the winter and putting green covers will be installed. This process usually takes place during the first or second week of December, depending on the weather we are experiencing. Our staff will reduce in size but continue to work on the golf course throughout the off season. The list of tasks to complete is lengthy, but we will start it by verti-cutting fairways and removing dead or dying Ash trees that are present throughout both campuses. At the Main Club, our skating rink will also be installed- stay tuned for its availability as colder weather approaches. From all of us on the Grounds Maintenance staff, have a happy holiday season!

GOLF UPDATE By Chris Muldoon, Director of Golf
As the winter weather approaches, we wrap up another active season of golf. Despite untimely weekend rain since Labor Day, play is up 16% compared to last year’s shortened season or nearly 7% compared to 2021. With the turn of the new year just over a month away, the planning stages for next season have already begun. The finalized golf calendar will be forwarded along over the next several weeks to help you plan ahead. In mid-October, we had the privilege of hosting the Robert Trent Jones Society Annual Meeting for the first time. The mission of the Society is to honor Robert Trent Jones Sr. and his work, to preserve the historical information and documents pertinent to the golf courses he designed, and to encourage and support the education of member clubs on the design principles of his courses. Although the event may be more about camaraderie than competition, I’m happy to report that Team Tuxedo – consisting of Jake Lindsay, Keith Kucinski, Andy Aran, & James DePiero – walked away with the trophy! A special thank you to Jake Lindsay, our Club’s Director for the Society, for his enthusiasm in promoting awareness and appreciation for the history of golf courses that Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designed—including ours! While the tournament season has come to a close (except for Bloodies & Bagels!), we’d like to recognize some of our recent winners. In October, the men’s tournament season closed with our final “major” – the Fall Classic Member-Member. Peter McGuire & Dick Stack outlasted Ashish Malik & Jatindar Kapur in an exciting Flight Champions Shoot-Out to win the Fall Classic for the second time (2013) together.

In the final women’s final “silver” event, the Flaming Foliage, Club Champion Kellie Baldwin continued her terrific season to win her first Flaming Foliage with 37 Stableford points – 7 better than Runner-Up Maureen Cook. Our men’s and women’s season-long match play tournaments all found closure: In the Robert Trent Jones Senior Championship, Kirk Kashevaroff defeated Runner-Up Chris DiLorenzo to claim five of the last six RTJ Senior Championship titles. In the Champions’ Division, Andy Wyszomirski defeated Runner-Up David Shearer to win his fifth Champions’ Division title – having won in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, & 2023. In the Legends’ Division, Jake Lindsay won his first Legends’ Division title when he defeated Runner-Up Jay Mottola on the 19th hole of a great match. In the Governor’s Cup, Kirk Kashevaroff & Howard Mertz earned their first Governor’s Cup together as partners when they defeated the father & son tandem of Chris & Matt DiLorenzo by a ‘4 & 3’ margin in the finals. In the Armageddon Tournament, Allison Kucinski completed a three-peat when she defeated Runner-Up Karen Banyo ‘3 & 2’ in the individual handicap match play finals. The golf course is still open, and we hope to see you often before the snow begins to fall. For those traveling South in the coming days, please travel safely.
