Location: Milan, Italy

The Milan-based project is an affordable housing community for refugees that addresses increasing refugee crises in European cities by providing physical and mental support for these people. The multifunctional community offers diverse services and activities tailored to the needs of refugees, including social spaces, educational and training facilities, and cultural interaction places. Regarding spatial operation, the private and public spaces are structured based on a circular geometrical composition, which implies inclusiveness and a sense of belonging, encouraging cross-ethical cooperation within the community. By providing a warm and inclusive atmosphere, this project enhances the overall quality of life by promoting social support and emotional dependence. Additionally, rooftop farming lands that integrate urban greening and agricultural cultivation are introduced to improve refugees’ economic income and food supply. Overall, the community is designed to integrate with the urban environment, providing different levels of spatial experience: the ground floor is for public interactions and social activities, closely linked to the urban environment; the second and third floors provide residential units, while the third-floor platform is designed with rooftop agriculture.

A community addressing the refugee crisis

Italy has one of the worst refugee issues in Europe, reflected in the impact on the domestic security environment and the humanitarian crisis of the refugees. According to its Ministry of the Interior, more than 31,000 people arrived in Italy by boat in 2023, compared to about 7,900 last year, with the majority of arrivals so far this year coming from countries in North Africa and the Middle East, as well as refugees from the UkrainianRussian War. Refugees arrive in Italy mainly by water and land, the former traveling by small boats from Tunisia or Libya through the Mediterranean Sea to Italy's Lampedusa and Sicily; the latter entering the European continent from Turkey and illegally migrating to Italy. Milan has the highest number of refugees in Italy.

Social Houses Distribution

Milan was one of the earliest cities in Europe to develop affordable housing, and due to the high density of the city center, the affordable housing communities are mainly situated on the periphery of the circular urban fabric, mainly in the western part of the city, 3 km away from the city center. The project site is located in the Via Teresa Noce street, surrounded by the Quartiere Chiesa Rossa affordable housing community built in the 1970s.

The entire programme is arranged in a combination of circular elements, which makes the whole space feel more open and inclusive, illustrating the peacefulness and solidarity of refugee community. The architectural massing was defined by several circular spaces as residental units, and the spaces inbetween these apartments are used as public service, gathering and activities spaces, like theatre, gym, learning area and farming lands.

Scene Design with Architecture ELements as PROPS

Individual work

Instructor: Wenbo Zhang

Design Duration: 02/2024 - 09/2024

The essence of this design is to transform a narrative into a sequence of visual illustrations, utilizing architectural and design language. The process involves four key steps. First, I developed my story and visualized it into several conceptual scenes using AIGC (Artificial Intelligence-Generated Content). Next, I drew inspiration from these conceptual scenes to create a hand-drawn visual script. The third step involved integrating these scripted scenes with various styles of architectural modeling. Finally, I rendered the models and enhanced them further to create a cohesive and visually compelling scene. This approach blends storytelling with design, bringing the narrative to life through architecture and illustration.

Candidates scramble for what's left of their supplies to stay alive in the caves.

Food fights in caves

A wild village in the mountains

A wild village in the mountains surrounded by cemeteries to help the ghost woman make her rag dolls, and only if he's satisfied will he be able to get through.

The maze of white walls with pools of blood can only be cleared if you get out of the maze within a specified time, and the layout of the walls has been maliciously altered in the process.

Out of the labyrinth

At the black market at the bottom of the city, everyone needs to find a way to redeem their trafficked bodies and escape the black market.

Candidates need to save a trainload of people by stopping the train at the station and finding the thugs to kill them.

Survive on your own for a month in the only oasis in the desert with your own wilderness survival skills

The group went to the control centre of the Twin Towers to force a hibernation mode, causing the program to selfdestruct.

INT.THE CAVE ARCHITECTURE, IN THE MOUNTAINS, STRANGE

There are only a few supplies inside, so those who come to take the test need to kill each other or find other ways to keep themselves alive.

BOY & GIRL

How to secure supplies?

Gril: ‘They're all killing each other, what should we do? Should we join them?’

Boy: ‘No, we can't do that. There's got to be another way out of here that doesn't involve hurting people to get supplies.’

Moving on to the next exam

INT.THE FLYSHEET, IN THE DESERT, HUNGRY

The only oasis in the desert, with no readily available resources for survival, everyone needs to survive on their own for a month through their own wilderness survival skills.

BOY & GIRL

How to Survive This Difficult Condition Until the Deadline ?

Gril : ‘There might be some droughttolerant plants to be found in the desert that might be edible. We can also look for any signs of a water source.’

Boy : ‘Well, good. Let's observe the terrain around us and see if there are any low spots where a water source might exist.’

Moving on to the next exam

INT.THE HIGESPEED RAIL , IN THE RAILWAY STATION, URGENCY

There is a murder case of a train hijacking by criminals. Candidates intercept the train at the station and need to find the criminals and kill them as soon as possible.

BOY & GIRL

How to find the killer?

Gril: ‘Go to the control room and find a way to signal the train to stop.’

Boy: ‘I hope we're in time, the lives of the whole bus are in our hands.’

Moving on to the next exam

INT.THE TWIN TOWERS, IN THE CITY, TAKE CHANCES

By finding a loophole in the guards inside the Twin Towers, people entered the inner core control room and forced his programme into hibernation mode, causing the programme to self-destruct and the whole world to start collapsing and finally appearing at the bottom of the Twin Towers as a spatial rift connecting it to the real world.

BOY & GIRL

Try to destroy the system and find a way back to the real world.

Boy ‘We've finally reached the control centre, but this place looks so complicated.’

Gril : ‘True, but we must find a way to destroy the system soon.’

Back to the real world

INT.THE VILLAGE, IN THE MOUNTAINS, FEAR

Nomura, a mountainous village surrounded on all sides by cemeteries, helps the Ghostbuster make her rag dolls, which can only be passed if he is satisfied with them; however, the Ghostbuster's standards are an indeterminate number, and he has no actual purpose in wanting those taking the test to live, and the final answer to the test is that burning all the rag dolls in the Ghostbuster's house kills the Ghostbuster and breaks the game.

BOY & GIRL

How to leave the village with the approval of the Ghostbuster

Boy: ‘We don't necessarily have to confront her head on. Let's see if there's anything we can use in this village.’

Gril : ‘Maybe there's some kind of secret passage or tool. Let's look carefully.’

Moving on to the next exam

INT.THE MAZES, IN THE POOL OF BLOOD, CRAZY

Walking out within the allotted time counted as a pass, however the system's examiner maliciously changed the layout of the wall midway through the process, making the questions more difficult

BOY & GIRL

How to find the right way to the exit

Boy : ‘This labyrinth is already complicated, and now that it's been tampered with by the examiner it's even more difficult.’

Gril : ‘The more we do this, the calmer we have to be. Re-watch the wall for new clues.’

Moving on to the next exam

INT.THE TRADITIONAL CHINESE ARCHITECTURE, IN THE BLACK MARKET, FLUSTERED

In the black market at the bottom of the city, all people's bodies become the black marketer's trafficking goods, and they need to find a way to redeem or kill the black marketer to escape from the black market.

BOY & GIRL

How to escape from a ghost market?

Boy ‘Either we find a way to ransom ourselves, or we'll have to fight them hard and kill the black marketeer.’

Gril: ‘Then we'll just have to fight it out. But we have to plan carefully.’

Moving on to the next exam

Destruction of the Twin Towers system

The Twin Towers are supported by a number of rotating, superimposed cubes and curved columns to form a rhythmic tower.

Villages in the mountains with a large number of columns and sloping roofs form an abstract image of residential architecture.

The black market is formed by a combination of Chinese buildings with sloping roofs, the building form uses the superposition of several sloping roofs, and the materials of the main body of the building are timber and concrete.

Renovation of a Milanese convent

Individual work

Instructor: Shen Gao

Design Duration: 10/2023 - 11/2023

Location: Rieti, Italy

The Monastery of Santa Maria del Piano, situated in the green valley between the towns of Orvinia and Pozaglia Sabina, dates back to the 11th century and is said to have been built by Charlemagne in the 8th or 9th century. It was restored but abandoned by the monks at the end of the Middle Ages. The current ‘Reuse the Abbey’ project proposes to reinvent the ruins as a meditation centre for yoga, meditation, catering and a wide range of activities ranging from one to many days in length. Based on the concept of respecting history and integrating nature with modern functionality, the project aims to preserve the original architecture and historical flavour of the Abbey, while subtly incorporating spatial elements adapted to the needs of modern meditation activities, so that the ancient relics will be revitalised in the new era, and participants will be able to experience physical and mental relaxation as well as spiritual discovery in a peaceful and historical environment.

In the view of the philosopher Peter Sloterdik, the critique of capitalism does not lie insidecapital, but outside the sphere with which it is constructed. The interior of capital createsthe hallucinogens and the amniotic fluid that ultimately intoxicates all living beings bornin this space into this gigantic womb. Commercial complexes, from their inception, haveembodied a dialectic between inside and outside , by creating an internal landscape ofconsumption, where people choose to escape social interaction. In Euro pe, when mostshopping malls were small-scalc, they tore at the historical fabric of the city. The numberof shopping malls in China has more than doubled in the last decade, and the trendcontinues, too. All of those has led to a decline in public livability. But when we turn ourattention to the exterior of the complex, is it possible for design to break out of the externalpublic space?

This project involves analyzing 33 parcels across 11 station areas in Shanghai, to investigate the staging and classification of connectivity coefficients in metro superstructure public spaces to identify optimal development modes that enhance three-dimensional urban vitality. We introduce and validate a new guidance-oriented indicator: connectivity density and establish HPM models with public space vitality as the dependent variable. The purposeof the research is to use the results for public space improvement,to summarize thecharacteristics of humanized spaces, and to form a "feedback-adjustment" loop to guidethe design.

The urban design achieves a solution to the problem of the original building's current condition by increasing the Public Space , forming a New Atrium , adding New Corridors and incentiving Zoning Bonus to form a new renovation project.

The design incorporates a coherent planar and structural logic, seamlessly integrating form, space, material, and structure to create a continuous flow and immersive spatial experience. The primary load-bearing structure consists of a series of arched bamboos complemented by straight bamboos serving as supporting purlins, while the skin is composed of delicate bamboo strips. The design is distinguished by its fluidity in space and permeability in materials, resulting in an impression of lightweightness.

Practice:

1. Combined column: 40 bamboo poles 3 combinations, M6 interlocking bolt fixed, spacing @ 600.

2. Combination beam: 3 combinations of 40 bamboo poles, M6 counter-locking bolt fixing, spacing @600.

3. Edge strip: 40 bamboo poles, fixed with F30 gun nails, bowl cut at the end, spacing @650 at the widest point.

4. Face layer: 20 wide bamboo sheets, seam width 10.
