T

here’s no doubt about it: Atlanta is a sports city.

And with three professional teams at home here (four, when the Atlanta United FC arrive next year), there’s nearly year-round action for all of us fans to enjoy.

But for all of the fancy footwork, fast hands and sheer strength that make Atlanta’s sports pros heroes on the field (or the baseball diamond or the basketball court), many of them are heroes in an entirely different way when the scoreboards shut down, the lights are turned off and the crowds go home. So with summer coming to a close and several exciting months of sports about to get under way, in this issue of 17th South we’re turning the spotlight on a few Atlanta pros not for the stats they’re logging in the record books, but for the contributions they’re making in our communities.

For our cover story (page 33), writer Lauren Finney chatted with Hawks guard Kyle Korver about his eponymous foundation, which, with help from his brother, Klayton, has become a family affair.

(If you’re out and about in the city and come across what looks like a fun field day competition in progress, chances are it’s one of Korver’s notoriously playful fundraising events.) And H.M. Cauley talked with beloved Braves alum Tom Glavine and his wife, Christine, about the fight against childhood cancer, a cause they’ve championed for years. Finally, there wouldn’t even be major sporting events for us all to enjoy if it weren’t for those who work behind the scenes. So, Cauley also caught up with Todd France, the über agent, head of CAA Sports’s football division and an organizer of the New Era All Star Football Camp. Regardless of which teams you pledge your allegiance to, you’ll be cheering for these folks from the sidelines.

SOME LIKE IT HOT Richards’ Southern Fried Brings Hot Fried Chicken to Krog Street

C

hef Todd Richards is bringing the heat to Krog Street Market in the form of hot chicken. His latest concept, Richards’ Southern Fried, serves fried chicken three ways: classic, hot and Richards’ HOT. The chicken is seasoned with a blend of spices that creates a “slow burn” much different than the overwhelming punch you get with spicy food doused in chili peppers.

Richards is exclusively using Springer Mountain Farms chicken, a local purveyor from north Georgia. The meat goes into hot chicken sand-

wiches stacked with pimiento cheese, lettuce and chow chow, while plates include variations of half chicken, three whole wings, breast and thigh or leg and thigh combinations.

All meals are complemented with seasonal Southern sides, including cucumber and tomato salad, potato wedges, jalapeño creamed corn, pickled vegetable slaw and cornbread.

Check out the daily specials, such as red beans and rice on Monday and Tuesday, hot chicken mac and cheese on Wednesday and Thursday, hot catfish sandwiches on Friday, or chicken and waffles on Saturday and Sunday.

The eatery is the latest from Brewed to Serve Restaurant Group—also owners of White Oak Kitchen and Max Lager’s—and this is the first project from Richards’s newly launched food service and product company, Southern Food Traditions, LLC. Richards was previously executive chef of The Shed in Glenwood Park, The Pig and the Pearl and White Oak Kitchen, all with menus that heavily focus on Southern fare.

The inspiration for the group to create a dedicated fried chicken joint came out of Richards’s signature fried chicken dish at White Oak Kitchen,

which was taken off the menu after the first year so that the restaurant could be known for its Southern cuisine and not just its fried chicken.

The Krog Street Market stall opened in July next to The Cockentrice and will have the same counter service of the market’s food stalls.

Future-Focused Atlanta City Studio Pop-Up Launches at Ponce City Market

W

ith the well-received debut of Atlanta City Studio in May, ideas to enhance the city are closer to reality.

This is Atlanta’s first pop-up urban design laboratory, where visitors, residents, urbanists and professionals can brainstorm ideas that could contribute to shaping the area’s future.

Atlanta City Studio asks, “How should Atlanta grow for the future?”

A team of city planners, architects and urban designers are on hand to interact with visitors at the studio.

But the pop-up space also hosts lectures, book talks, film series, open forums, urban art presentations and

other neighborhood and design components that will involve the community in creating the city’s landscape.

“The Atlanta City Studio is already helping manage the design elements of our changing city, and community engagement and involvement is an integral part of this process,” says Tim Keane, Commissioner for the Department of Planning and Community Development, City of Atlanta. “To date, 1,500 Atlanta residents and visitors have come to the studio since we opened in late May.” These community engagement

events include Design Over Coffee on the first and third Friday of the month, book club meetings on the second Wednesday of the month and “Good Urbanism”—a lecture series discussing the 10 principles of urban design— on the fourth Tuesday of the month.

Every six months, the pop-up will move to a new location in the city, giving residents of different neighborhoods a chance to connect with like-minded individuals.

Next up? Still TBD, but city insiders say somewhere on the Westside. n

Ramen is the Nexto Trend

R

amen has evolved far beyond a college student’s meal, and part of its popularity in Atlanta came from Chef Mihoko Obunai. She was the brains behind Soundtable’s pop-up, Ramen Freak, that launched in 2014.

Since her start in Atlanta as coowner of Repast, which closed in 2010, Obunai has been featured in Bon Appétit, Food & Wine and on Food Network’s “Chopped.”

Ramen was always her first love, and her past few years have been devoted to the noodles, studying at Ramen Lab in New York City and competing as the lone female Ramen Master at the First Annual Ramen Battle in Brooklyn in October 2015. Her ramen pop-up,

Ramen Freak, launched in Atlanta in 2014 at The Sound Table and drew a loyal fan base that showed that ramen can survive on a stand-alone menu.

Nexto is the result of Obunai’s studies of ramen and the influences of growing up in Japan, where her mother regularly cooked Japanese staples that Obunai now uses in her ramen, like wakame, wagyu beef and a variety of mushrooms, such as enokitake, maitake and shiitake. Along with ramen variations of spicy bacon, beef tartar mazemen and curry tofu, Nexto’s menu features traditional Japanese fare. Many of the dishes are influenced by Obunai’s mother: okonomiyaki, a savory pancake with shrimp, bacon and cabbage; yakibuta, a mix of pork belly, cheeks, collar and short rib; steamed buns; and offerings of wagyu beef, sake salmon and foie gras.

Nexto is located at 828 Ralph McGill Boulevard in the same warehouse building as Two Urban Licks, another restaurant in the Concentrics group. n

In August, Little Barn Apothecary opened the doors to its shop at Westside Provisions District, selling a variety of simple goods that are all plant-based and made from wild-harvested and certified organic ingredients, in addition to a few other curated beauty and home items from similar sustainable artisan brands. Atlanta-based Little Barn Apothecary was founded just one year ago, but since then, its luxury line of products has gained national attention from major lifestyle publications, including Elle, InStyle, Southern Living, Vogue and more. f there’s one sector of business Atlanta is known nationwide for, it’s the home market and all that comes with it: real estate, interiors, architecture and remodeling.

Brad Cruickshank is well known around Atlanta as the President of Cruickshank Remodeling; he’s also the chairman of the Atlanta Chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and has won countless awards for his remodeling work throughout the Atlanta area. But tackling his personal property proved to be slightly more intensive—and humorous—than he first imagined.

Cruickshank, together with his Atlanta-native wife, Cheryl, knew he needed to start looking for a bigger home when his second child was on her way in 1991. In May of that year, a neighbor Realtor hinted that a house was going up for sale in their existing neighborhood of Ansley Park, and the couple snatched the property up and moved their two young girls into the house to begin immediate renovations.

The previous owner and his late wife were only the third generation to occupy the 1921 Dutch Colonial, and the Cruickshanks jumped at the chance to have a historic home in their current neighborhood— one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the metro area.

“The elderly seller, Ewing Miles, knew a lot about the provenance of the house,” says Cruickshank.

“He told us it had been built for a man who worked for W.E. Brown Decorating Company.”

The Cruickshanks wanted to honor the history of the house but to also modernize it for a family of four. It proved to be quite the undertaking, given the eccentricities of the house’s current state.

“The kitchen was a refrigerator and a stove in a room with very few cabinets, and the butler’s pantry had

been turned into a shower for the aging Mr. Miles,” says Cruickshank.

“The house had steam radiators and a dirt basement floor. The Miles’ daughter and son-in-law were living upstairs, with Mr. Miles downstairs.

They had to enter through a window they converted with an outdoor metal spiral staircase.”

But the Cruickshanks saw an opportunity where others might have seen calamity. “It’s the kind of house I love to get because we weren’t going to pay for anyone’s poorly done remodel,” Cruickshank says with a chuckle.

The work involved three massive phases of renovations on the house, with an initial five-month remodel, an addition—Brad’s “nights and weekends project for several years, the family got tired of me banging away out there every Saturday and Sunday”— and then a heavy-duty third remodel.

The first renovation covered all the basics for rooms that fit the family’s lifestyle needs. “We added a bath, remodeled and re-plumbed a bath, and we needed a new kitchen,” he says. “But we wanted to change the floor plan very little.”

Outside was a different matter.

“Our vision for the house was an L-shape of glass walls around an outdoor patio space overlooking the garden,” recalls Cruickshank.

Most of the surface water was pooling dangerously around the foundation and up into the dirt floor basement, which required regrading the yard and adding a stone retaining wall for structure and correct drainage. “We also brought in several huge boulders that we placed around the perimeter of the back yard to provide some structure and sense of permanence to the plantings.”

The second, years-long phase encompassed putting a sizable addition on the back of the property, including a family room, a first-floor bathroom, Cheryl’s home office, a guest room and a garage with a study over it.

But that wasn’t as daunting as the eight-month-long third phase, which had the second story of the house propped up to rebuild the living room and dig out a new basement under the house and the addition.

“Working out how to get the digging equipment into the house to dig it out, keeping water out of the

house, keeping the master bedroom propped up—it was by far the hardest part of the project. The living room is the biggest room, and there was significant termite damage in the floor joists and not a lot of room to work underneath. I had to crawl in there and put some beams in for support. It got wearisome,” he admits.

But through it all, there were elements of surprise and humor, whether from the Cruickshanks themselves or the families before them. “We ran kind of long on the construction schedule,” Cruickshank recalls.

“My girls, now grown, think fondly of the first night we spent in the house in May of 1995. The polyurethane was still drying on the first floor, and to get to the bedrooms we had to climb up an extension ladder to the second floor. They asked if we were going to do that every night.”

The previous owners revealed a mischievous, unconventional style as the remodel unfolded.

great sense of humor with the kitchen make up such as it was,” Cruickshank says. “She also painted the baseboards black, and in the corners of the room she painted spider webs and a rat or two. I actually found a dead rat in the wall when we began construction!”

When they went to peel the wallpaper from the dining room, they found a little bit of graffiti left over, too, that said: “Wallpaper hung

The discoveries weren’t limited to the first floor, either. “When we moved into the house, the attic had several trunks of items that had been left behind. We really enjoyed sorting through those,” says Cruickshank.

“We found a ticket to the premiere of ‘Gone with the Wind,’ a collection

of old greeting cards, a WWI uniform. They all gave us great insight into the house.”

For the interior, the couple was able to bring the outdoors inside, something they both love. “The wood in the new family room is Pecky Cypress,” explains Cruickshank. “Cheryl and I both like it.

It’s unusual due to the irregular channels in the wood created by a naturally occurring fungus that dies once the wood is cut.”

In the house are three oil paintings by Massachusetts artist Robert C. Gruppé, including one that hangs over the mantel in the living room. The color green is a common theme throughout, reflective of Cheryl’s love for the color in both interiors and nature.

After 20 years of living in the house, the Cruickshanks have had plenty of time to enjoy the fruits of their initial labors. As for whether or not the renovation was worth it, Cruickshank has only this to say: “Anyone can have sheetrock. We like old houses with character.” n

It’s nice and light and keeps me cool in Atlanta’s steamy summer heat, and I don’t have to wear the whole suit; I can always break it up. I enjoy mixing and matching the pieces. I’ll wear the pants with a nice shirt or rock the blazer with a tailored jean.

It makes me looks like a polished classic Southern gentleman.

Are you an outfit planner or do you dress by how you feel?

I’m definitely a planner. I have a weekly theme for my work looks.

For instance, this week is seersucker.

I have suits in every color of seersucker you can imagine: blue, pink, brown, black, beige, plaid and white.

Next week I might be in linen suits.

In the past I have done a monochromatic theme. It’s a constant style evolution. The weekly theme keeps things interesting and distinguished.

Where did you get the pieces you put together?

This particular suit came from Jos. A. Bank, but I tailored it to fit me perfectly. I tailor everything but my underwear. It makes such a difference in achieving a streamlined silhouette.

Who are your style icons?

Grace Jones, Naomi Campbell, David Bowie, Sidney Poitier.

Sidney inspires my classic work looks, and the others inspire my wild side that cultivates my out-on-the-town ensembles.

What’s your typical off-duty look?

My new look is a long black skirt, combat boots, a mock turtleneck top and a fitted black sport jacket punctuated with a great smoky eye. It’s a really cool look.

What are your favorite intown stores for vintage, shoes and accessories?

One of the stores I love for jewelry pieces is En Paris boutique. It’s a unique place that carries extraordinary things you just can’t find anywhere else in the city. The owner’s name is Stevie, and if you describe something to her, she can find it for you. For instance, I have a friend who loves hair barrettes and was on the hunt for a Chanel piece. Stevie located one for her. She has impeccable taste and is very connected!

Where do you find fashion inspiration in Atlanta?

I’ll take myself to Little Five Points or a great drag show. Shawnna Brooks is my favorite performer.

She is always on point. She sews everything herself. She’ll whip up an extravagant feather headpiece in a few days. It’s remarkable. I also enjoy sitting at Sublime Donuts near the Georgia Tech campus to see what the young ones are wearing.

I like to take the younger trends and translate them to work for my look.

With Ayurveda, learn how to eat well to feel well

A

yurveda is a 5,000-year-old holistic science and lifestyle tradition rooted in India.

Ancient though it may be, it has many valuable health principles that can still be applied to modern-day intown living. A big part of the science is focused on preventing imbalances in the body through nutrition and smart eating habits that support healthy digestion. Essentially, what you eat affects how your digestive system works, and only when that is balanced will you be able to properly absorb nutrients and avert disease in all its forms.

If your own digestion could use a healthy boost—or if simply eating more mindfully sounds appealing—consider incorporating these fairly simple 10 rules of Ayurveda into your daily routine.

1. Think of food as medicine.

Listen to your body and mind, and, in general, remember the “opposites attract” rule to level out through food. Are you hot, angry or inflamed?

Then choose cooling foods and spices, such as cucumber, fennel, melon and mint, and drinks, such

as coconut water. Are you cold, dry or depressed? Then pick warming foods and spices, such as cinnamon, cardamom, oatmeal and vegetable soups, and drinks, such as chai tea.

2. Eat a diet focused on fresh, whole foods, with an emphasis on organic vegetables and fruits.

When possible, stay away from dry, raw vegetables because these can be difficult to digest, and favor cooked veggies instead. Of course, if it’s between a French fry and a raw piece of broccoli, use your common sense. That brings us to…

3. Steer clear of fried, processed, additive-laden and frozen foods.

They can really mess with your digestive system.

4. Choose happy creatures.

Everything you consume has energy.

So if you do eat animal proteins, feed yourself the most positive energy you can find in the form of grass-fed beef (happy cows), wild-caught salmon (happy fish) and cage-free eggs (happy chickens)—you get the picture.

5. Do an easy morning detox.

Drink a cup of warm water with lemon before you eat or drink

anything (including that cup of Joe) in the morning. It’s a nice way to flush toxins and jumpstart the digestive system every day.

6. Eat regularly.

Three meals at routine times of the day, such as breakfast at 7 to 7:30 a.m., lunch at 11 to 1 p.m. and dinner at 6 to 7:30 p.m., are ideal. Also, go slowly so you don’t overeat. You should feel satisfied, but not bloated or heavy.

7. Stop drinking iced bevvies.

Ice in drinks is an all-American habit, but not one to necessarily be proud of since it slows digestion.

If you’re not feeling overheated, keep your beverages ice-free.

8. Sip hot tea.

Herbal teas have many healing benefits. Feeling anxious or irritable?

Sip a calming lavender or chamomile tea. Feeling sluggish or have indigestion? Pour a cup of ginger tea.

Or simply enjoy one just because.

9. Quit counting calories.

You heard me. Just trust me, it’s not all about the calories. When you follow the principles above, you’ll

reap health rewards, feel great and simply won’t need to count calories.

10. Be kind to you.

If you opted to indulge in that doughnut, don’t beat yourself up! There’s nothing worse than adding guilt to your guilty pleasure. An anxious mind also can disrupt your tummy. So, savor every morsel, smile and then get back on your Ayurveda horse. n

M

ovies have come a long way, and not just to your iPad or iPhone.

Twenty-nine years ago, organizers of the then-fledgling Out On Film movie festival struggled to get submissions that touched on LGBT themes or were produced by a member of the community.

This year, a record 400 movies were submitted for the chance to share their stories with Atlanta from September 29 through October 6.

“We now get films from all over the world,” says Jim Farmer, the festival director since 2008 (and a regular contributor here at 17th South). “We start the submission process January 1 and have until September to narrow it down.”

Last year’s event screened 45 feature and about 65 short films. The goal is to have at least 100, and in recent years, that hasn’t proved problematic.

In fact, many of the movies are making their world premieres here.

“We love to find the voices of tomorrow, that new talent with his or her first film.” says Farmer. “Some of the filmmakers are veterans, but many are brand new; they’ll be names you hear about in five to 10 years.”

The festival’s best success so far has been with Evgeny Afineevsky, who showed his film “Oy Vey! My Son is Gay” at Out On Film in 2009.

This year, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary for his “Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom.”

And movie-goers don’t just get to watch the films: There are plenty of opportunities to meet and greet the

creative talents during the week.

Getting filmmakers to participate has also gotten easier, says Farmer.

“In 2013, we got a grant from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the group behind the Oscars) to promote our filmmakers series, and that got us national recognition,” says Farmer. “The growth of the Atlanta film industry has also brought more filmmakers into the area. We’ve made an impact by bringing filmmakers here who show their films, have a great experience and decide to make their next film here. They’re actually moving here from L.A. Never in a million years did I think I’d see that happen!”

Along with showcase voices and stories of the LGBT community, Out On Film offers a unique opportunity for film-lovers of all persuasions to come together. “These days you can watch a movie...anywhere, but at these events, you can watch a movie, hang out with the filmmaker, learn about the process and come together with other people from the LGBT community,” says Farmer. “Even though a lot of progress has been made, it’s still not comfortable for many people to be out. Here, they can see movies collectively and share the experience.” n

Must-See Movies Highlights of the 29th Out On Film festival include these sure-fire hits: “Strike a Pose” Six gay and one straight male dancers appeared with Madonna on stage and in the film “Truth or Dare.”

This movie, made 25 years later, tells the story of their behind-the-scenes struggles and personal challenges.

“Fair Haven” Gregory Harrison and Tom Wopat start in a story about a young man’s coming home after gay conversion therapy, only to be faced with an emotionally distant father and memories of a past, loving relationship he tries to forget.

“First Girl I Loved” A sensation at Sundance, this film centers on 17-year-old Anne and her new love, Sasha. Among the many hurdles they face as high schoolers is the guy who has a crush on Anna and is determined to change her mind.

Boston Calling A nostalgic trip highlights the best of both old and new

T

he sprawling, second-story lobby of the Hotel Commonwealth is softly aglow, a wall of translucent drapes diffusing the mid-summer sun that’s beating down outside. The hotel’s airconditioning feels like cool, fresh breath against my flushed face and sun-kissed shoulders. I inhale deeply, relishing the relief. Yet an observant onlooker behind the front desk senses I could use more still.

“How about some waddah? Ain’t nobody dehydratin’ on my watch!”

The hotel’s tall, slim and suited head concierge, Nick MacDonald, plunks an ice-cold bottle of water into my hand and another into my husband’s.

I’m grateful, and I thank him, but it’s not the cold water that I find

most soothing. It’s that accent.

We’re checking in for two nights, a quick pit stop in Boston on our way to Maine for 4th of July festivities with my in-laws. Although this city is among the most popular in the U.S. for families in want of a patriotic Independence Day experience, for us, it just feels like home. And for six years, it was. This is the first time I’ve been back in Boston since we moved to the South two years ago, and MacDonald’s unmistakable, non-rhotic speech sends a wave of nostalgia barreling through my belly. Suddenly, I can’t wait to get back outside and explore, and that’s just what we do.

In a city as dynamic as Boston, two years is plenty of time for change to set in—when one restaurant’s doors close, another’s open—but we’re delighted to find a few of our favorite haunts not only intact, but teeming

with life. Guided by the desperation that comes with not knowing when we’ll be back again, I place a double order of my favorite buttery sushi for dinner at O Ya that night. For lunch the next afternoon, we cozy up to the bar at Picco and order what I’ve long been convinced is The Planet’s Best Pizza—chewy crust charred just so. I follow up the half that I’ve just polished off with a scoop of homemade strawberry ice cream, knowing perfectly well that I’ll be too full to finish it. (And I am.) To burn calories and bring back old memories, we walk through crowds of businessmen and tourists in Back Bay, and along uneven brick sidewalks in the South End, so seduced by our old neighborhood’s charm that I don’t even mind when I trip not once, but twice.

For all the pleasure we take from reliving some of our old favorite

spots, back at the hotel we’re impressed by what’s new. Hotel Commonwealth is fresh off a $50 million renovation that left in its wake 96 new guest rooms, as well as modern outdoor terraces that overlook Fenway Park. (The proximity is such that imagining a foul ball splashing straight into your martini wouldn’t be absurd.) Big, Boston personality is laced throughout the property: Legendary rockers’ electric guitars hang like artwork in a lobby hallway; the ivory blinds in our suite feature red, baseball-style stitching; and housekeeping signs bearing the phrases “No sah” (that’s “No sir” in Boston speak) and “All yahs” (All yours) dangle from guest room door handles. The hotel is by no means new, nor are its two restaurants, the sleek Island Creek Oyster Bar and the elegant French bistro-style Eastern

Standard. But Island Creek is new to me—in six years of living here I never set foot inside—so we invite a couple of friends to join us for what turns out to be one of the best and most decadent meals I’ve had in Boston. Maybe anywhere.

It’s game night, and we exit the restaurant to find Kenmore Square thick with Red Sox fans spilling out of Fenway. Conversations, ranging from the game’s best plays to post-game plans, are laden with the unmistakable accent that just one day earlier Nick MacDonald rolled off his tongue like a welcome mat. The next morning, as we leave our room en route to the airport, I close the door and turn our sign to “All yahs,” a message to housekeeping that we’ve gone, and to Boston that I’ll forever feel at home here. n

I have to admit that I love anything focused on fitness and wellness.

So when I heard about the hotel’s recently-revamped spa suites and ninth floor of wellness, I was eager to venture out of my Midtown neighborhood for an overnight visit.

From the moment I walked into the White Lotus Suite, I was in heaven. My eyes immediately went to the spin bike in the living room, where I also found yoga gear, cycling DVDs and an electronic standing desk.

Then there was the bedroom and master bath, featuring books on medi-

tation and yoga, a sound machine, a hanging chair (you have to see it to believe it) and a deep soaking tub.

After slipping into my “uniform” (robe and slippers), I headed to the spa where I was greeted with a glass of Champagne. Since I had some time before my service, I cozied up on one of the chaise lounges and ordered a salad with grilled chicken to complement my bubbly.

As for my treatment, I opted to go with the 50-minute Southern Sweet Tea Body Buff, which starts with a full-body exfoliation and ends with an application of delicioussmelling moisturizer. But if you’d prefer a mani/pedi, massage or the popular Hydrafacial treatment, those are all options, too.

Post-spa, I couldn’t pass up a soak in my suite’s beautiful bathtub.

With a glass of wine in hand (that the spa receptionist had so sweetly offered for me to take back to the room), that’s where I headed.

Next up was dinner. I love my

workouts and wellness, but I also love my food. Dinner in the hotel’s restaurant, The Café, kicked off with a glass of Sancerre and the tuna crudo with compressed melon and avocado cream. When it came time to order my entrée, I was tempted by the thought of fresh fish, as well as one of Executive Chef Franck Steigerwalds’s house-made pastas. Thanks to the option to get a small or large portion of the pasta, I could have both, and I did. I dug in to the agnolotti with short rib and mushrooms and the organic Scottish salmon, both paired with beautiful wines.

Then there was dessert: strawberries three ways—a scoop of strawberrybasil ice cream, roasted strawberry shortcake and a fried strawberry with chocolate-hazelnut filling. By the time I got around to enjoying the live music in the lobby lounge for a bit, I was full and happy—and ready to tuck myself into that comfy Tempur-Pedic bed.

When I woke up the next morning, I knew that my first stop should

be the spin bike in my living room.

After knocking out a good 30-minute workout courtesy of one of the DVDs in the fitness goodie basket, I was ready to eat again.

After the previous night’s decadent dinner, I opted for a lighter room service breakfast of an omelet and a house-made, cold-pressed Boost juice made of lemon, apple and ginger.

Before I knew it, my 2 p.m. late check out (one of the perks of staying in the wellness suites) had arrived, and it was time to return to reality.

But I headed home knowing that the next time I need a little respite from hectic city life, The Ritz-Carlton, Buckhead’s wellness floor is a healthful escape I’m eager to return to. n

T

his fall, it will be two years since the strains of Vivaldi, Mozart and Mendelssohn disappeared from local FM airwaves.

And in the shift away from classical music, one of the city’s most soothing voices was out of a job.

But that didn’t mean the dulcet tones of John Lemley’s tenor were going to be unheard for long. Within weeks of being made redundant, he found a new home at AM 1690-WMLB, “the Voice of the Arts” station in Midtown.

Packed in his arsenal of musical knowledge was the format he’d perfected at his prior gig: “City Cafe”, two hours of music, cultural news and interviews with headliners of the local arts scene. The biggest challenge was amassing a classical library.

“The station owner loves opera, so there was a lot of that, but opera alone does not a classical program make,” says Lemley. “I had to start from scratch building a collection.”

“City Cafe” relaunched on February 2, 2015—the sixth anniversary of its debut. Recently, the station shifted the show to a three-hour, Sunday afternoon slot, freeing Lemley to host a new late afternoon program,

“High Tea,” that showcases music from the 1940s through the ’70s under the broad umbrella of “oldies.”

“I’d spent the better part of a quarter century up to my neck in really old music from the 17th, 18th, 19th centuries, so it’s been some fast and furious continuing education for me,” he says. “I’ve had to do a lot of research and listening to find what most appeals to people.”

Lemley has also been under a learning curve at his other job: reporting and anchoring the news on 106.7 FM-WYAY. “I was having fun with the music, but I did miss the news,” he admits. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had the opportunity to work in a newsroom, and it’s really made me strengthen my news chops.”

The last year has brought personal changes as well. In February, Lemley

married his long-time partner, Mike Selk, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and a regional food and beverage director for a national country club corporation.

A few weeks later, his sister passed away. One of his pets died. And now the couple is looking to move out of their Decatur-area home.

But music remains a constant.

“Music of the ’40s, ’50s, ’60s and ’70s is seeing an amazing Renaissance, and it’s not just a nostalgia thing,” he says. “Younger listeners shop for music as they do for food: They look for music of substance and quality with a fresh, ‘organic’ sound—not the mass-produced ‘factory’ variety. Plus, if it weren’t for Millennials, vinyl and turntables would have never seen such an amazing comeback!” n

Off the Air On food: “I’ve always felt a strong connection to food. My fondest memories are built around meals with those I love. I actually read cookbooks as literature. I also collect family recipes. I am not a cook, but I do dabble with some success as a baker.

My favorite creation is a family-recipe pound cake.”

Eating in Midtown: “Some of our favorites are Empire State South, BoccaLupo and the tiki-fabulous Trader Vic’s in the downtown Hilton.

Left to my own devices, I’m all about Southern food establishments—Mary Mac’s Tea Room and Silver Skillet. One of my beloved lunch spots is Bab’s Midtown on Juniper.”

Down time pastimes: “I’m an avid, maybe rabid, genealogist. There’s nothing I enjoy more than working on the many branches of my family tree. I also brake for cemeteries, whether or not it contains my personal ancestors.

Mike jokes that I actually do see dead people!”

eauchamp Carr believes Atlanta has a distinctive philosophy that harks back to the legacy of the Coca-Cola Woodruffs and their dedication to giving back to the community. “There’s an ethic in Atlanta leadership to do good work and not look for credit that Mr. Woodruff inspired,” Carr says. “That spirit has animated a lot of good causes around the city.”

Forty-one years ago, Carr and a group of preservation-minded friends put that ethic into action when they spearheaded the campaign to save the Fox Theatre from the bulldozer. Atlanta, a city with a penchant for tearing down the old and historic to make way for the just about anything else, was about to lose the Egyptian- and Moorishinspired movie palace to neighboring AT&T, then Southern Bell, who was eyeing the prime site on Peachtree Street for a new office building.

Carr, now 71, had just left a job at Citizens & Southern Bank (now Bank of America). “I was available for something exciting, and this

Cauley | came along,” he recalls. “At the time, it seemed like an onerous burden, but it was also a marvelous opportunity. And I felt a connection: I grew up going to the Fox. When I was 10, I used to get on the old Atlanta transit system bus and ride down to Midtown to see the movies.”

The theater’s owners had been losing money steadily for years and were open to selling. “They were talking to anybody who might buy it,” Carr says. “But when it came out that Southern Bell was going to tear it down, people rose up. They wrote ‘Save the Fox’ and ‘How can you do this?’ on their phone bills.

What looked like a great deal was a public relations nightmare.”

The clamor engendered a feasibility study that determined the Fox could have a future in the right hands.

Carr and a group of fellow volunteers formed a nonprofit to oversee a fund drive and begin booking acts to bring in revenue. Through what Carr describes only as “a complicated real estate deal,” the newly formed

Atlanta Landmarks team took over the space with a $1.8 million mortgage.

“Everyone thought we’d fall flat on our faces, but public opinion was so strong on our side,” Carr says. “Still, if we missed one interest payment, the building would revert to the former owners, who could demolish it. We all had to sign an agreement that if we failed, we’d no longer protest the demolition.”

Those who remember driving down Peachtree during the “Save the Fox” campaign may recall volunteers in the street collecting change for the cause.

Others may have fond memories of dancing in the balcony to a raucous rock band. For his part, Carr was placing calls to every foundation, corporation and philanthropist in town, begging for money.

“That was my role,” he says with a laugh. “When our first big interest payment—$100,000—was due, I got on my knees in front of people who had resources. It worked; our first major foundation grant came from the Woodward Fund. The Delta Zeta so-

rority held a gala to raise money. One day, Ben Massell Jr. (of the Massell Realty Company) walked in and wrote a check for $5,000. A week later, I got a call from a lawyer whose client wanted to make a $400,000 gift conditional on our raising all the money. But we also had thousands of small gifts from ordinary people.”

The gala celebration to mark the final mortgage payment was held on Easter Sunday in 1975. The Fox’s 4,400 seats were packed by ecstatic supporters who erupted in cheers when the Mighty Möller organ rose from the orchestra pit to the strains of “Easter Parade.”

After the campaign, Carr put his fundraising skills to use for the Woodruff Arts Center, where he worked for 35 years. He raised four kids, and got involved with the Atlanta Preservation Center and the Atlanta Landmarks board.

“It was great fun—and it still is,” Carr says. “But it came from our little group just wanting to do something good for the community.” n

s I sit down at a marble table in the brightly lit sunroom, slowly perusing the short menu at Bread & Butterfly, avocado toast catches my eye.

I know it’s elemental, but I also know I must have it.

Even as I’m telling the server—who appears either not to speak English or not be interested in talking to me (I prefer to think it’s the former)—that I’d like the avocado toast for breakfast, I’m wondering why I’d waste a restaurant meal on something I could so easily make at home myself.

Most people with rudimentary cooking skills can master the ubiquitous avocado toast— just look to Instagram for proof of its mass appeal. Yet here I am, seated in the all-day French café created by one of Atlanta’s most celebrated chefs, paying $8 for a breakfast I make myself at least three times a week.

I throw in a “side order” of scrambled eggs with smoked trout on brioche to convince myself I’m not that basic.

Then, one bite into the avocado toast, I immediately realize I could never recreate the perfection that chef and owner Billy Allin crafts into each and every one of his dishes.

(For the uninitiated, B&B is the third offspring of Allin, of Decatur’s Cakes & Ale fame.)

| STORY: Kate Parham Kordsmeier | PHOTOS: Sara Hanna | The bread is a meticulously-toasted sourdough; the slightest crunchy exterior gives way to a light center and tastes as if it just came out of the oven. And it likely had: B&B makes all of the bread and pastries in-house and fromscratch daily.

The avocado, so flawlessly ripe and buttery, accented with the slightest twist of a lime and freckles of chili flakes, peeks out from under a soft-poached egg that nearly oozes its velvety yolk just at the mere idea of picking up my fork.

A lightly-dressed salad spiked with razor-thin squash rounds envelops the dish, adding the precise amount of freshness breakfast requires.

I am not worthy, I think as I inhale my “basic breakfast,” embarrassed that I ever thought it would be anything less than the best avocado toast I’d ever had. Allin is skilled that way, his food always remarkable in its simplicity. Though I shouldn’t give him all the credit. Chef Bryan Stoffelen is the one manning the stove at B&B. He’s also the one I can thank for the fluffiest soft-scrambled eggs I’ve tasted, so lush and melty I wonder just how long they had to cook (I like to imagine hours to reach this pillow-like state.)

After three more visits to the classic French bistro, I’ve yet to find one dish I wouldn’t order

again without hesitation. They are each edible essays in restraint, minimalism and, perhaps most of all, clarity; each humble ingredient tastes like the superior version of itself.

At lunchtime, it’s mandatory to start with the Three Salads, a rotating trio of fresh vegetables in a mustard-heavy vinaigrette. During my visit, it was marinated beets, potatoes and haricot verts. The creamy shrimp remoulade is also excellent, and if you’re feeling naughty, the potato and raclette gratin with crispy pork, frisee and sherry vinaigrette will certainly do the trick.

Perhaps nothing is more comforting than the tomato soup, sweet and creamy, with the slightest tang and topped with one of the more impressive puff pastries I’ve seen. I feel less ashamed of the mess I made around my bowl when our server tells me that no customer has finished this soup without needing a serious “crumbing down” afterward. That’s the sign of a good puff pastry. No flakes, no thanks.

The small, warm space, complete with beautiful patterned floors, an intricate copper ceiling, gold leaf signage, natural woods and white marble, is addicting. It’s how I get my Paris fix without the transoceanic plane ticket, particularly when I come later in the evening and cozy up into the black leather banquette

in the back. (Truth be told, those small café tables are as impractical as they are adorable.)

Order a few carafes of wine for the table to feel truly Euro. There are also 60 bottles to choose from, many of which are affordable and either French of American. Then start with the charcuterie plate, unpretentiously served on a simple dinner plate alongside cornichons and mustard. This meat lover’s dream comes with cured hams and terrines that would make Julia Child proud.

Because you need another taste of that brioche, you must order the chicken liver toast.

The livers are characteristically pungent, cut with crispy ham and buttery bread and smothered in an herbaceous jus to make everything get along famously. To me, this is France on a plate.

B&B is serving what I deem the best burger in Atlanta right now. The Burger Américain is smothered with melted Swiss cheese, sweet caramelized onions and zesty grain mustard.

But in true Allin form, the vegetables are not to be overlooked.

The seasons call the shots, so the menu changes in that regard, but if you go while the squash salad with bulgur is on the menu, do yourself a favor and order two.

It’s shocking how much flavor is packed in, and it’s totally guilt-free after all that bread.

It also epitomizes what B&B is all about: clean, classic cuisine, uncomplicated by modernist techniques and bizarre ingredients that have swayed so many chefs in Atlanta.

B&B is not a French-inspired bistro that serves some strange amalgamation of Parisian food.

Rather, its menu is timeless, serving all the

iconic French dishes you’d expect. I’m particularly captivated by the pastry display at the coffee-during-the-day, wine-at-night bar. Pastry chefs David Garcia and Abigail Quinn turn out buttery croissants that taste so light you can nearly convince yourself they’re healthy.

One of those, or a sweet brioche or perfect baguette, will ruin all other bread for you.

I could stay here all day, eating a different decadent carb on the hour—and they almost want you to. They’re open all day, after all. But if you’re thinking of lingering a while at B&B, come prepared to power down. The restaurant has Wi-Fi, but its password is closely guarded by staff. “We made a conscious decision to be conscientious,” says Allin of encouraging patrons to put away their smartphones and laptops. “Meaning, everyone needs some time to unplug. It’s about taking a break from it all.”

On my final visit, I succumb to that notion of leisure and bring a book to read during my breakfast. The turmeric ginger tea is delightful and so healing I pretend I deserve a chocolate croissant after being so good.

It is worth every calorie. n

You can easily whip this up at home using a few simple ingredients.

The Cockentrice: El Diablo The Cockentrice has a sensational new cocktail called El Diablo. Perfect for warm late-summer days, El Diablo is light and refreshing, a mix of ginger beer and a milder form of tequila, known as mezcal.

“This cocktail is a play on the classic of the same name,” says bartender Cole Just. “However, I substitute mezcal for tequila, and I make a huckleberry-lime shrub (a fruity, flavored vinegar, which is often sweetened and cooked down into a syrup), with foraged huckleberries from the Pacific Northwest. I also use a housemade ginger beer that has a lot more bite because we juice the ginger before we bottle it. It’s one of our top sellers at the bar.”

Kyle Korver keeps his long-standing philanthropic efforts thriving in Atlanta

A

tlanta Hawks guard Kyle Korver is well-respected both on and off the basketball court. While he holds the NBA record for the highest single season three-point percentage, he’s also regularly recognized for his character, leadership and philanthropy, including previously winning an NBA Sportsmanship Award—the first time ever for a Hawks player.

But for Korver, it’s less about consciously giving back and more about a way of life. “For me, I grew up in a Christian church, my father was a pastor and we lived out our faith as how we made the community better,” he says. “I’d go and do service every Saturday [in Paramount, California] growing up. It was ingrained in me. It wasn’t charity or philanthropy; it was just what we did. It was more about living well.”

He created the Kyle Korver Foundation during his first NBA tenure in Philadelphia as a 76er. There, he established a long-term relationship with the city’s Helping Hand Rescue Mission, which continues today.

It’s typical of Korver, who says that it’s important to him to make an investment in places he’s helping support. “I didn’t want to come in and try to do something just to do it,” he says. “I was looking

for something with a true need, where we could make a sustainable plan.”

That spirit carried over to Korver’s career with the Utah Jazz: He still supports People Builders Utah, and has helped with the construction of more than 100 wheelchair ramps. He took that same spirit to the Chicago Bulls, and he brought it to Atlanta as well, where he recently partnered with Plywood People, an Atlanta-based supporter of start-ups that address community problems, for a putt-putt tournament at Ponce City Market. Korver notes that while he does like traditional means of fundraising, he likes to mix it up and keep it interesting, fun and achievable.

“Not everyone can play golf, but everyone can play putt-putt,” he says.

“It felt more inclusive.”

He continues, “I think anyone who is in the world of fundraising says, ‘How do we make it different?’ You want your cause to stand out and feel new and fresh. But also, how do we make this fun? It’s too easy to get burned out in the charity world. It needs to be fun for the organizers as well as the attendees, while keeping it all about the cause.” Korver humorously notes that not every “fun” idea works out: “For one event, we thought it would be fun to try the longest kickball game ever. It was 24 hours long,

and we still hold the title in the “Guinness Book of World Records.”

In retrospect, it was the worst idea ever, but for a really great cause!”

Korver’s been having a blast working on the foundation with his younger brother, former college basketball player Klayton, who recently moved with his wife to Atlanta. Klayton, now an Old Fourth Ward resident, has been “the point person for the last seven or so years,” says Korver. “He and his wife have been amazing, have been really kind and willing to help. Besides my wife, I can’t imagine someone else I’d rather be doing this with. It’s brought our relationship to a new level and brought us closer as a family.”

Look for the brothers and their families on September 24, when the Kyle Korver Foundation hosts a dodgeball tournament at Georgia Tech’s Recreation Center. “We’ve done dodgeball before in Utah,” says Korver.

“It’s nostalgic. Everyone gets dressed up—gotta have the clothes to go with the teams!” The tournament will start with pool play, followed by singleelimination rounds. The winner will play Korver and some of his Hawks teammates, with all funds going to support local initiatives through the Kyle Korver Foundation. “We’re looking forward to a great day,” he says. n

Braves favorite Tom Glavine and his wife, Christine, go to bat for a worthy cause

or more than 20 years, two-time Cy Young Award winner and Baseball Hall of Famer Tom Glavine made Atlanta sports fans roar, but what might be less known about this local celeb is that he was just as adept at making them open their wallets. With his 18-year teammate and wife, Christine, Glavine has lent his name and energy to the cause of curing childhood cancer.

The Glavines are quick to point out that their five kids, ranging from second grade to collegeage, have never had to fight the disease. But 13 years ago, when one of their young classmates was diagnosed, it made the couple realize how little is being done for juveniles with cancer.

“Our eyes were opened,” says Christine.

“Since then, only two drugs have been introduced for kids with cancer, despite all the research. I knew people would listen to us about the problem because of Tommy’s name, so I started a luncheon to raise money.”

This year’s event on September 24 marks the 12th year the event raised awareness and funds for CURE Childhood Cancer, an Atlanta-based organization with a global reach.

“It helps someone diagnosed at Children’s Healthcare, but it’s not just for those being treated in Atlanta,” says Christine.

An average of 600 seats are snapped up every year for the event that usually raises around $300,000, says Glavine. “After all these years, we’re going toward $4 million.

That’s a big deal. But what really drew us in, other than watching the pain families are going through, was the fact that little is being done.

Whatever money the government allots, only 4 percent goes to childhood cancer.”

The Glavines were so hyped by the success of the annual luncheon that three years ago they took their efforts to a higher level and got behind the Believe Ball, a swanky gala at the St. Regis in Buckhead that has pulled in over a million this year.

“If it were up to me, I’d be in sweatpants all day,” says Christine with a laugh, “but I have to wear a gown, and Tommy has to wear a tux. And we get to meet some pretty amazing kids and parents.”

The ball was just another avenue for spreading the story of their mission, says Glavine. “We are constantly trying to figure out new ways to raise awareness, and for me, Major League Baseball was a no-brainer. A number of clubs have had childhood cancer nights, and we’re doing another this year in September [Go Gold for Childhood Cancer Awareness Day, September 10]. I hope it will be an annual thing.”

Along with raising five kids, doing color commentary for the Braves and working for children’s cancer research, Glavine is also involved with the Georgia Transplant Foundation, sponsoring an annual game night that invites participants to play a round of poker or pool with local celebs. That kind of community involvement keeps them grounded, says Christine. “When you’re trudging through life thinking, ‘I’ve got carpool, I’ve got so much to do,’ just listening to these stories help me realize I can handle what’s on my plate a little more easily.” n

s a sports agent, Todd France has heard all the references to Jerry Maguire.

“The big difference is,” France points out, “he only had one client. When you have 60-plus, it becomes much more interesting.”

France, a native of Chicago, started out on a small scale in 2003 when he launched his own company, but it grew rapidly and attracted a buyer in 2011. “Unfortunately, the owner also bought a football team, which was a conflict of interest, so he gave the company back,” says France, who later sold it to the CAA group.

Today, his client roster reads like a Who’s Who of the football world: Demaryius Thomas, a former Tech star now with the Denver Broncos; Vic Beasley, a Clemson All-American now with the Falcons; and Leonard Floyd, a UGA player now with the Chicago Bears.

And being part of a larger organization gives him access to more A-list names that he recruits for his philanthropic project: The New Era All Star Football Camp, a free, week-long project in June that has drawn more than 2,000 youngsters since it began 11 years ago.

“We bring in more than 65 NFL players for four days, and there’s no larger gathering of NFL players like this in the off-season, which is why we get such great media attention,” says France. “The players understand the importance of giving back and the chance to work with kids, and the kids get a one-time chance to meet these athletes and learn from the best of the best.”

Midway through camp week, the players also take over a local restaurant and act as servers. This year’s dinner, held at The Palm, raised $125,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Other parties and celebrations are held at various venues around town.

The program has grown since France started the camp with just 10 pro players. “We always talk to our clients about the importance of giving back, and I thought it was a good idea to lead by example,” he says. “And it’s grown over the years, with both the number of people attending and the number of athletes involved. And it’s all free.”

So far, the camp has remained centered in Atlanta, but France is hopeful it will soon expand beyond the metro area. “Now that I’m part of a bigger platform with CAA, and their music and entertainment side as well, who knows where it will go.” n

SEVENTH ANNUAL BELTLINE LANTERN PARADE SEPTEMBER 10

Parade-goers anticipate the sight of thousands of lanterns illuminating the Eastside Trail during the annual BeltLine Lantern Parade. Participants gather with their own decorated, colorful creations, ranging from globe and hat lanterns to others the size of giant parade floats, and march down the entire 2-mile stretch of the BeltLine’s Eastside Trail from Old Fourth Ward to Piedmont Park.

Over the past seven years, the parade has become a tradition on the first Saturday after Labor Day. It marks the start of the Art on the BeltLine annual exhibition, which runs from September to mid-November. Last year’s parade drew more than 60,000 participants, and this year’s is expected to be the biggest yet.

“The Eastside Trail is our first taste of how the Atlanta BeltLine can connect our city,”

says Chantelle Rytter, who created and hosts of the parade along with the Krewe of the Grateful Gluttons. “It’s an expression of love for those 2 miles of trail.”

New in 2016, the Krewe adds a giant phoenix to its lantern mix, and SCAD alumni Sam Lasseter created giant glowing puppets while he was in Lacoste, France.

Lantern workshops are hosted by the United Methodist Church in Candler Park and Rytter during the months leading up to the parade. Check art.beltline. org/schedule to see upcoming workshops.

Live music is spaced throughout the parade with performances by several local groups, including the Krewe, Black Sheep Ensemble, Mausiki Scales, Common Ground Collective, Atlanta Freedom Bands and, new this year, Moz Drums.
