The neural connection between smell and emotion is particularly strong. The brain regions that process smell and emotion are intertwined to a degree unmatched by any other brain region. The central and emotional brain areas that process odors are located in the same neural network structure. This network structure is called the limbic system. The limbic system is the original core of the brain, or as the name suggests, it is called the olfactory brain.

I set up six emotions, which are disgust, fear, and sadness. Shocked, angry and happy. More than a dozen scent samples were collected,most of which were scents that evoked memories and emotions. Subjects were invited to choose a few of the six expressions of interest, and then select the scents they thought corresponded to the corresponding emotions from the scent samples.

Rekindling long-forgotten memories through visual cues is not commonplace: you might come across a sweater at the bottom of a box that you used to wear often as a child, yet struggle to vividly recall the scenes of wearing it. I choose to link memories with scent, enhancing the likelihood that those scenes will swiftly flash and take shape in people's minds, much like the morning Proust reminisced about.
