WHAT AIRPORT...

Name that Airport

Is the only airport in the world whose runway is a beach?

Has been in operation since 1936?

Schedules flight times around high and low tides?

Uses vehicle lights to illuminate the runway during emergency night time landings?

Barra Airport (called Port-adhair Bharraigh in Scottish Gaelic) is a short-runway airport located on the wide, shallow bay of Traigh Mhòr at the northern tip of Barra Island, in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. The airport is unique because it’s the only airport in the world where planes take off and land on a beach.

The airport was opened on August 7, 1936 as islands were among the first places in the UK to really benefit from air transportation. The original single fare for a flight back to the mainland of England in 1936 was £4. The flight schedule is still governed by the ebb and flow of the tides. The beach is set out with three runways, marked by wooden poles at each end. The runways vary between 2,231 and 2,776 feet long (680 and 846 meters). This allows the planes to almost always land into the wind. At high tide, the runways are under water. Emergency flights occasionally operate at night from the airport, with vehicle lights indicating the center line of the runway and reflective strips laid on the beach.

Islands Limited. Passenger numbers at Barra are now over 11,000 per year, with around 1,400 aircraft movements annually. There are also around 60 private, light aircraft flights per year.

The draw of landing on the beach at Barra makes it an ideal film location for many film producers. The airport is constantly being filmed year-round because of its unique landing runways. Barra Airport has seen an increase in passenger numbers and flights in and out of the island in the past 10-15 years. This trend is expected to continue as Barra offers a picturesque spot for passengers to have a once in a lifetime experience.

In 1974, Loganair began operating flights into and out of Barra under contract with British Airways. In 1994 the responsibility for Barra Airport passed from Loganair to Highland and

MOST INTERACTIVE LUFTHANSA TECHNIK

Lufthansa Technik was home to our favorite interactive display. In an effort to bring attention to their new digital platform known as AviatorÂŽ, Lufthansa brought out a high striker to encourage attendees to pick-up the mallet to see if they had the strength to send the puck all the way up the tower to ring the bell. Hundreds of people gathered around their booth to watch as both men and women were each given three consecutive attempts to ring the bell. Only about 10% of the participants successfully rang the bell, but each time someone did the crowd would erupt with cheers and applause.

The high striker was definitely a crowd pleaser.

Aero-Zone auctioned-off a circa 1965 black and white photo of Elvis Presley and his then wife Priscilla boarding a private jet. It was a very cool photo to put in essentially any office. Coincidently, about 30 days after the show a red 1962 Lockheed Jetstar, once owned by Elvis and featured on the National Geographic Channel, was also auctioned-off after sitting on a runway in New Mexico for 30 years.

Louis Paulhan and Milan Stefanik will forever be linked with what aviation first?

I

n the multi-billion dollar industry of aviation, one aspect that can be overlooked is the role aircraft play in helping sick or injured people receive quick medical help. During World War I, while stationed in Serbia, Milan Stefanik flew with the MFS 99 Squadron on the Serbian Front. Although the details are lost to history, sometime during the fall of 1915, while still in Serbia, Stefanik became very ill.

His life hung in the balance and with no quick way to get him the help he needed, French aviation hero Louis Paulhan stepped up and flew Stefanik to safety.

Stefanik survived because of Paulhan and the conveniences of a faster, more direct method to connect people with medical help. Unfortunately, Stefanik died shortly after the war ended in a plane crash, but he will forever be listed with Paulhan as the first medical evacuation, or “medevac.”

TRIVIA

Now a days, every major hospital has at least 1 helicopter to assist in transporting patients. There are even companies like Global Rescue that assist in large scale rescues, like the 2010 Haiti Earthquake, the 2011 Tsunami in Japan, and yearly trips to Mount Everest to rescue stranded climbers. The ability to transport sick or injured patients to medical facilities quickly has saved the lives of thousands of people. In fact, a recent study conducted at Johns Hopkins found that, “one in 65 significantly injured patients brought to a Level I trauma center by helicopter would have died if ground transportation was the only option.”

Having the option to be medically evacuated seems very commonplace, but one hundred years ago it saved the life of the first of many thankful patients.

ACHIEVING SYMMETRY

Competitive Bodybuilding, Entrepreneurship, and Family Life with Roger Brochu

T

raining, tracking progress, meal planning, posing, competing—on paper, bodybuilding in its competitive form, looks and sounds like a full-time job. And for many who operate in this sport, it absolutely does become one. However, for Roger Brochu, the dimension of his life is full and varied. In addition to the title “competitive bodybuilder,” he holds several others, including husband, father, and Vice President of Unique Airmotive Services (UAS). Indeed, balance is required—and Roger has worked diligently to hone and develop this skill.

Reflecting on his time growing up, Roger admits that he struggled with fitness and diet. He was consistently overweight and this is something that plagued him throughout his boyhood and then, as a young man in the Navy. It wasn’t until 2008 that Roger

decided to get serious about his health and drop the pounds that he had carried around for years. Focusing primarily on cardiovascular fitness and a low-fat diet, he lost 70 pounds pretty quickly; however, he was left feeling unsatisfied with the results. Standing at 6’4”, Roger felt that he looked “skinny” and decided to hit the gym on a different level.

While Roger dedicated himself to building muscle through weightlifting, it was not until 2013 that he was exposed to the world of competitive bodybuilding. “I saw a good friend compete,” he explains, “and I thought to myself, ‘I wish I could look like that’.” He mulled over the idea in his head, and initially believed it was somewhat farfetched to picture in his own life. After all, in addition to being a husband and father of four young children, he was also co-owner of

“Up until the time that I got serious about my health and fitness, the core of my focus was on my career and family,” Roger notes.

“The irony there, as well, relates to the fact that I didn’t necessarily plan my life’s roadmap to a ‘T’.” Case in point, Roger began his aviation career when he got out of the Navy in 1998, and while he always held a desire to become his own boss and run his own business, it was not an endeavor that he believed would come to fruition when he was young, especially considering he had no experience.

When Roger left the Navy, he began working for a company that managed JT8D and JT3D engines for various airline customers. Serving

as a Warehouse Manager, Roger worked his way up through the ranks to become Director of Quality in 2000. As another decade passed, it was in 2011 that he decided to take the leap and venture out, feeling that he had enough experience and knowledge to make a go of it independently. Initially, the plan was to buy and sell APUs and piece parts; however, he experienced a change of direction as he reached out to friends and colleagues to announce his resignation from his current company.

Placing a call to the man who would become his business partner, the idea for UAS was borne, and the pair decided to open a shop that would directly serve the APU industry.

His partner provided financial backing while Roger moved into a Vice Presidential role focused on operations. Roger was introduced to the bodybuilding scene at the same time that UAS officially become certified as an FAA Repair Station and earned its EASA Approval.

Sunset Classic 2016 where Roger took 1st place

Finding success in his professional life, however, did not afford Roger the opportunity to rest on his laurels. Still intrigued by the notion of competitive bodybuilding, and structuring his days so he not only had time for work and family, but also for fitness, Roger formally hired a coach in 2014 and picked a show to compete in. He opted to participate in a fairly new division to the National Physique Committee (NPC) called Men’s Physique.

Roger was attracted to this division because Men’s Physique requires competitors to have high levels of discipline and focus—and he believed that he would be able to transfer these skills from a professional environment to one centered on fitness. “These same disciplines are required with managing and running a business,” he explains. “I knew that I needed this level of structure in order to manage my time successfully. I could not be in a position where I was missing training, meals, work, and most importantly, time with my wife and children.”

Embarking on this new journey, Roger was not immediately successful. However, it was in 2015 that he started placing either 2nd or 3rd in shows. By June of 2016, he finally reached his goal of winning 1st place at the Sunset Classic.

How are your days structured?

When I am preparing for a show, I wake up at 5am and start with cardio. Doing cardio at this time of day, on an empty stomach, allows you to maximize your fat burning and metabolism for the day. I follow that with breakfast, which is one of my largest meals and includes a combination of protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Then I head to work. At some point, I go back to the gym for weightlifting. Overall, this training comprises 2-3 hours of activity with the remainder focused on nutrition. Of course, I still carve out time for running the business as well as time with my wife and kids. The trick here is you simply have to be hyper vigilant of your schedule, but still flexible enough to know that life is going to happen.

What were your wife and business partner’s reactions when you first told them about competitive bodybuilding?

So, how big of a deal is nutrition?

At first, they both thought that I was simply being a “health nut” and that I would eventually grow out of it and find a different hobby. And I did struggle with letting my partner know about what I was considering because of all of the horror stories one hears about the sport in general.

However, they both came to realize just how serious I was taking it, and I am lucky that they both are such fantastic supporters. In fact, my wife, Kristine, started competing in Bikini. I suppose she figured that she was living the lifestyle already so she may as well get on stage and showcase her hard work. I’m blessed to have her in my life—she is truly the backbone of our family.

It sounds like this is a family affair then.

What is it like training to compete alongside your wife?

Actually, doing this with Kristine helps us be a better parenting team to our children— Gwen, Jonathan, Ryan, and Calvin—and it helps us manage our schedules as her nutrition and training plan are very similar to mine.

We will do our cardio at the same time, hit the gym at the same time, and eat all of our meals together. Of course, the only difference is related to the amount of food she eats and what exercises she has to focus on. Ultimately, for Bikini division it is not about the size of the muscles, rather the overall shape of her body.

We have even transformed our house so we are able to practice posing together—we took one part of our downstairs and installed hardwood flooring and mirrors across one wall. Doing this has eliminated the need to leave the house for another gym session, so we can be at home in the evenings with our kids.

Probably the “biggest deal” truth be told. When I am training, I have to eat six meals per day and drink 1½ -2 gallons of water—but manipulation of a nutrition schedule is something that is very fluid throughout training and changes the closer you get to the competition. And here is another area where I have to give my wife her due credit.

When I first started this, I had no idea just how critical it was to maintain a strict diet—and it is here where Kristine is the key to my nutritional success. It is necessary to prepare and weigh all of my meals for the day because I have to eat every 2½ to 3 hours, which means I have to take three meals to work every day. If I didn’t have Kristine’s help, there is no way I would have the time. And you simply must do this because the nutritional schedule is the key to speeding up your body’s metabolism, which is necessary if you want to achieve extremely low body fat percentages.

Any words of caution for others considering this sport?

Simply put, if I had to pinpoint some advice it would be this: Find your balance and never lose sight of your priorities. Being on stage and experiencing the glamour and the fame of the sport is exhilarating, but it’s also an arena where

a person can forget about what is actually important. In fact, I have learned this the hard way—and I came close to even retiring from the sport. It is imperative to remember the people who got you there, especially during the times where everything doesn’t look and feel so glamorous. This is a sport that can easily consume your life because competitive bodybuilding requires such an intense training regimen and an “eye on the prize” mentality. I have had to actively rearrange my priorities so that training does not affect my relationship with my wife, my kids, my business partner, or my church.

Challenges and time management skills aside, how do you feel this sport has changed your life?

Outside of helping me with my fitness and health, competitive bodybuilding has provided me with so many incredible opportunities. It has made me happier and a better person. And I have made new friends—I met my current training partner at the gym and he has become one of my best friends. He has been one of the people key to my success because he pushes me to be the best every day at the gym, even when I am not feeling it.

Additionally, the discipline and focus required to actually get to the point where I am ready to compete has helped me appreciate my life on a greater level—and it helps me keep a good attitude. I’m pleased with my results, but I suppose this sport and what it demands from me makes me appreciate everything else in life that much more.

26.2 One of the greatest things about the aviation industry is the people in it. Take for instance, our good friend Samuel Bouveron; if you’re a customer of Thales or if you happen to train for marathons in the middle of winter in Canada, you may know him as well. We recently spoke with Samuel about his marathon lifestyle and make no mistake, it is a LIFESTYLE. Our joints hurt just thinking about it! We’re sure you’ll be just as impressed with Samuel as we are, so enjoy the read.

If it were easy, everyone would do it.

Q: When did you first start running?

A few years ago a work colleague talked me into registering for the NYC half marathon and sure enough I was selected. I was really excited but quickly realized I only had 3 months to get ready. I was in my late thirties and at the time the idea of marathon running was daunting and possibly beyond my physical abilities. Despite it all, on January 1st, 2014 I made a New Years resolution and in the middle of winter in Ottawa Canada I started running. The snow and the cold could have stopped me from running ever again but my brother-in-law would accompany me around the block with a flask of brandy to keep us warm. Just 3 months later I had completed the NYC half marathon in 1 hour and 59 minutes.

Q: When did you first start training to compete in full marathons?

Excited by my first half marathon achievement, I immediately registered for the Quebec City Half marathon and Philadelphia Half marathon. After completing those events I experienced my 1st runner’s

depression (lol). I asked myself, what's next? And of course, running a full marathon came to mind. So, in 2015 I started running consistently. I ran my first full marathon in Burlington, VT. Since then, I have enjoyed the many benefits of running, such as a higher energy level (which helps me chase after my two young kids), a stronger immune system, stress outlet, and an overall happier and healthier life style.

Q: How often and how far do you run each week?

I have found that an essential part of running long, healthy and happy, is to listen to your body and not be too focused on following a regimental training program. I run for fun and don’t ever follow any specific training program. A lot of my running partners have coaches and follow training programs to the letter. I will usually run whatever their coaches tell them to run and add my own personal twists to the workout.

I run for fun. This might not be recommended by running coaches but the most important thing is having fun and staying healthy. Typically, I have an “intense training week” with mileage of about 45-50 miles followed with a “recovery week” with mileage of about 20-30 miles.

Q: Does your training schedule change when you prepare for a marathon?

Yes. I start running less leisurely in terms of distance and pace as I get closer to the marathon day. Training for a marathon happens in phases to get the body and mind ready for such an event. Not only does my weekly mileage increase but I also increase the intensity of my workouts with speed drills and hill circuits. The most important training run of all is the “long run” which increases in distance week after week until about 2 weeks prior to marathon date when the tapering phase begins.

Q: What’s the farthest you’ve ever run?

The farthest I have ever run was during the JFK 50 Mile, America’s oldest ultra-marathon held in Pennsylvania's Appalachian mountains.

Training for an ultra-marathon is different than training for a 5k or marathon; the pace is much slower and the goal is to train your body and mind to go through a long sustaining effort. Ultra-Runners have to train multiple times a day to mentally prepare for running on already tired legs. My longest mileage week was 97 miles which included back-to-back “long runs” of 20 miles on Saturday and 30 miles on Sun-

day. During that week I ate 5 times a day and weight melted off me.

Q: How did you train differently for the Boston Marathon and the Boston Marathon qualifiers?

After running my first marathon I decided to one day run in the "Holy Grail" of marathons; the Boston Marathon. I joined a running club and began training every morning at 5 AM. All of the other members were experienced runners who had participated in the Boston Marathon many times. Training with a group is very different than running alone.

The effort is different and it helps you improve significantly. There is no shortcut in preparing for a marathon: You must put in the effort, the time, the mileage and only then will the results follow. Of course, training physically is important but the other essential component is to develop the mental toughness and the confidence to achieve what was once inconceivable to believe.

Q: What was it like running the Boston Marathon?

Running the Boston Marathon was a truly unique, a one of a kind experience. I really tried to take in and enjoy every moment of it. In the morning, hundreds of runners were loaded into shuttle buses. At the beginning it was quiet and after a few miles people started talking to each other and it got louder and louder,like a bus full of teenagers. At the start area, music was blasting and the excitement was really built up. Every step I took towards the start line I was gradually getting into my zone, some kind of meditation state where running becomes a pure moment of joy and happiness. The gun went off; it was a gorgeous day for a long run.

I started a little fast following the flow of some of the elite runners. Eventually the heat and dehydration started to hit me and my pace slowed. From the very first strides the crowds cheering and supporting the runners were loud and it got louder as we ran closer to the finish line. The noise from the crowds was the most difficult part for me because I usually run “quiet” marathons where you can run miles and miles without any mental distractions. At the Boston Marathon, the crowds make you aware of each stride. The best moment of the race was after I passed the finished line and I saw my kids and their mom running towards me to give me the warmest hug. It was an emotional moment. I promised my daughter I would bring back a medal and I didn’t disappoint. She was so proud.

That was my Boston Marathon experience and a dream come true for me.

Q: Do you engage in any strange running practices such as covering your feet in Vasoline or taping your nipples?

Funny that you ask this question. When I get prepare before the start time, as a "rookie" I look at others attentively and try to pick up on things I should do like warming-up, stretching, listening to music, etc., and sometimes I notice runners being very meticulous, tying their shoe laces several times, undoing them and redoing them.

I do none of these things, and so far it has worked out well for me.”

Q: What's the worst injury you've sustained while running?

My worst injury was (what I believe) a stress fracture that happened 2-3 days after running the JFK ultra-marathon. I never got an actual diagnosis from a doctor but from the symptoms it led me to strongly believe I had a stress fracture. About 2-3 days after running the JFK 50 miler, I was running with my son on my shoulders to keep his shoes from getting wet in the rain. Suddenly, I felt something painful in my tibia. The pain lasted for a couple of weeks. There is nothing to do for stress fracture except rest and stay off the leg.

Then the pain and discomfort gradually faded on its own.

Q: Have you ever hit “the wall” and just couldn’t go on?

I hit "the wall" a couple of times while training for my first marathon and it’s like your body literally stalls. You haven’t an ounce of energy in your body to keep running, your pace slows down drastically and there is nothing you can do about it. Even with the strongest mind, every stride becomes an inhuman effort. A running partner with tons of marathon experience explained to me my nutrition mistake and advised me to eat salt several times during the run. Since then, I have never hit any wall again.
