creatures. When male mountain lions fight for a territory, it is often to the death.

Even cougar cubs are ferocious. In fact, wildlife biologists say they are nearly impossible to tame. Furthermore, a mother mountain lion is especially protective of her babies.

As an archetype for protectiveness, the cougar reminds us that we should never become passive when it comes to protecting those we love and that which we hold dear. This can mean protecting our family and friends or it can extend to our communities and colleagues.

It can also mean protecting nature or other causes we care about. In addition, protectiveness can extend to our health, our creative ideas, and our homes.

The cougar spirit animal reminds you to be fierce when it comes to protecting those and that which are important to you.

Mountain Lion Symbolism: Agility The mountain is the hiker, trail runner, and rock climber of the animal kingdom. They can easily scale steep rocks faces, jump as high as 18 feet, and leap distances of 40 feet

For these reasons, the cougar is a symbol of agility. They remind us to be quick on our feet – both literally and figuratively. Instead of being rigid, we should strive to be flexible in mind and body.

This doesn’t mean being weak – the cougar is anything but weak.

It means to be ready to pounce on whatever comes our way – whether it’s challenges or opportunities.

Adaptability The cougar can live in a variety or environments, from arid deserts to forests to high mountain ranges.

And while they’re primary diet is deer, elk, and other ungulates, the cougar will also eat small animals, like rabbits and mice, as well as insects. While the cougar is not as omnivorous as the bear, they demonstrate an impressive ability to adapt.

Thus, the cougar spirit animal is a helpful symbol that reminds us of how important it is to be willing to adapt and try new things. Change is inevitable and resisting change can be worse than embracing it.

Secrecy The Native Americans say the mountain lion walks in moccasins that no one can hear. Like the tiger and the alligator, the cougar is an ambush predator. They stalk their prey silently, waiting for the perfect time to attack.

The cougar is also a symbol for the art of camouflage. Cougar cubs have spots for protection in their dens. However, when the mountain lion grows up, their tawny coats help to camouflage them on rocks and other landscapes so they are more successful hunters.

As a symbol of secrecy, the cougar is a reminder of the importance of patience and discretion. After all, we live in a society that values attentionseeking behavior. The cougar reminds us of the advantage of privacy and discretion.

Business people understand the importance of operating in stealth mode before going to market with a product or idea. By the same token, creative people know to keep their ideas under wraps until they are ready for showtime.

The cougar spirit animal reminds you that the best approach can be patience and self-containment even though you might want to pounce.

Beauty Known for their ferocity, the cougar is also beautiful. With their golden-green eyes and tawny coats, they simultaneously mesmerize and terrify us. Yet their beauty doesn’t stop at how they look; it’s also in how they move. The cougar maneuvers in their environment with agility, strength, grace.

As a symbol of beauty, the cougar reminds us that beauty goes beyond the superficial. It’s also in how we move, how we conducts ourselves, and the actions we take.

Wealth In South America, the Quechua People believe that seeing a puma is a positive omen that will bring good fortune. Thus, the Quechua associate the cougar with wealth.

To the north, the Native Americans learned about good hunting spots from mountain lions. They also say they learned hunting skills from the cougar.

Thus, for the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas, the

Pop Culture Cougar: Older Women Who Date Younger Men In popular culture, the term cougar has also come to symbolize a woman who dates a younger man. Some say the term originated in Canada to describe women in bars who were “on the prowl” to find a mate.

While initially the term was intended to be derogatory, its wide use in popular culture has softened the intended insult to a degree, but not by much.

In fact, the way the term is used is disrespectful to both women and mountain lions – just as calling every man who dates a younger woman a “sugar daddy.” Perhaps we can all agree that if two adults are in a consensual relationship it’s their business and we don’t have to try to insult or hurt them with name-calling?

Cougar and Mountain Lion Mythology

Native American Cougar Meanings While every Native American tribe has their own set of beliefs and traditions, in general, most tribes revere and fear the mountain lion. However, some tribes have a more negative view while others have a more positive one.

For example, the Apache believed the sound of a cougar growling was an evil omen and a harbinger of death. They also associated the cougar with witchcraft.

The Native Americans who lived on the East Coast of the U.S., from Ohio to Florida, told tales of an underwater panther who guarded waterways. The creature was most likely based on an alligator or crocodile, but it’s telling that the tribes described it as a fierce panther.

Seminole and Shawnee While the Seminole People spoke of the underwater panther, they, along with the Shawnee, saw the cougar as a powerful medicine animal who brought good luck in hunting.

In fact, many tribes used parts of the mountain lion, including their fur, for various spiritual ceremonies.

Shoshone For the Shoshone People, the cougar is a sacred animal along with the bobcat, wolf, and fox. In Shoshone tradition, these animals are never to be hunted.

According to Shoshone legends, once a very violent

During a vision quest, the medicine man spoke to the cougar who told him that he, the wolf spirit animal, the fox spirit, and the bobcat would protect the Shoshone People on the grounds if they vowed to never hunt them. Thus, a pact between the Shoshone and these power animals was made.

Pueblo People For the Pueblo tribes of the Southwest, the mountain lion is one of six directional guardians:

• The mountain lion is the protector of the North. • The bear is the protector of the West. • The wolf is the guardian of the East. • The badger protects the South. • The mole is the guardian of the inner Earth. • The eagle is the protector of the Sky.

Toho Spirit Guide The Zuni, Mohave, and Hopi tribes tell stories of a guardian spirit named Toho who takes the form of a mountain lion (or bobcat.) Toho provides protection and good luck in hunting.

Navajo The Navajo tell stories of the Changing Woman, who is a fertility goddess and protector of the people. The Changing Woman told the Navajo that cougar would be one of the protectors of the people.

Cougars are known to yield part their prey to bears, wolves, and even alligators. The Navajo believed they would also leave part of their prey for the people to eat.

Hopi Mountain Lion Meanings For the Hopi, the cougar is a powerful and sacred being. The Hopi view the mountain lion as the strongest and most fearless hunter as well as a protector of the tribe.

Cougar Clans Most Native American tribes are based around a clan system, which is a community organization that it rooted in the maternal family line.

Each clan is associated with a specific animal, including hummingbird clans, bear clans, fox clans, wolf clans, and others.

The clan animal serves as a guardian and special protector of the members of the clan. Native American tribes with cougar clans include

Puma in Incan Mythology For the ancient peoples of the Andes, including the Incas, the cougar, or puma, was an attendant of their creator deity Viracocha.

As the creator of the Universe, the sun, moon, and stars, Viracocha oversaw the three worlds of the gods, the living, and the dead.

Viracocha is sometimes depicted with three guardian animals: a condor, a puma, and a serpent. The Incas believed the condor communicated with the gods in the upper world and the middle world, which was the world of humans. Meanwhile, the puma, or cougar, represented the world of humans, which the Incas called Kay Pacha, or the world of the living. Finally, the serpent, or snake, was the guardian of the underworld, or the world of the dead.

The Incas also viewed the puma as a doorway between worlds. They saw the constellation that is known as Geminis as two pumas in the sky.

In fact, they call it the Puma Yunta constellation. Furthermore, they said that when solar or lunar eclipses happen, it means one of the pumas is jumping at the sun or moon and taking a bite out of it.

Cougar Dream Meanings Mountain lions are ferocious creatures who can strike fear in anyone. However, dreaming of a cougar should not necessarily be viewed negatively or as a bad omen.

If you dream about a mountain lion and you wonder what the dream is telling you, consider the emotions you felt in your dream.

For example, was it fear, anxiety, or wonder? Dream meanings and interpretations are personal to every individual. However, one thing we have in common is that our sub-conscious works through our emotions, and understanding our emotions give us insights into what the dream might mean.

Dreaming of a mountain lion attacking you can be a sign that you’re unprepared for something. So, the dream can be a wakeup call to work on planning and preparation for an upcoming event or activity. The dream can also mean that you need to be more protective of yourself, a person in your life, or in a specific situation.

Scary or anxious dreams can be unpleasant, but they are often gifts because it was “just a dream.”

Yet our dreams can be our subconscious or super-conscious sending us messages about things that we might be overriding or ignoring in our conscious state but something

that we should address. Hopefully, insights into cougar symbolism and mythology can shed light on what your dream means.

Organizations that Protect Mountain Lions As apex predators, cougars face a number of threats, namely from human beings.

To being, they are hunted for sport or by people who feel threatened by them, whether for themselves, their families, livestock, or pets. However, in most cases, the hunting of cougars is overkill.

In fact, cougars rarely attack human beings. In the past century, 27 people have been killed by mountain lions in North America. Compare this to about 30 – 50 people who are killed by dogs – every year.

Cougars also face threats from habitat loss and being hit by cars. Yet, because they are an umbrella species, it’s vitally important that we protect them. In wildlife and biodiversity conservation, protecting an umbrella species means that many other species within that animal’s ecosystem will also be protected.

By the same token, if that umbrella species disappears, it throws the entire ecosystem out of balance.

Flower-Daffodil

Daffodils are bright sunny flowers which make their appearance right around the time of Ostara, the spring equinox, which falls around March 21 in the northern hemisphere. Its bright petals are typically found in shades of white, yellow or even pale orange.

The daffodil is popular in spring flower magic because it is associated with love and fertility. Let’s take a look at some daffodil myths, magic, and folklore.

Did You Know?

• Daffodils are also known as the narcissus, after the legendary young

Greek man of the same name. • The occurrence of wild daffodils is sometimes said to indicate the former site of a spiritual hub. • Put fresh daffodils in a vase in your home to bring about abundance

Lucky Daffodils In some folklore, daffodils are considered lucky flowers. In particular, there’s a tradition that if you make the deliberate effort not to step on them and crush them, fortune will favor you with abundance.

If you give someone a gift of daffodils, they’ll have good luck – but make sure you give an entire bunch because a single flower will draw penury and ill fortune.

In parts of the British Isles, including Wales, if you’re the one in your neighborhood who spots the first daffodil of spring, it means that you’ll see far more gold than silver come to your home over the coming year.

Daffodils in Mythology Daffodils are also known as the narcissus, after the legendary young Greek man of the same name.

Narcissus was pretty full of himself because he had been given the gift of great beauty by the gods.

One day, a sweet young wood nymph named Echo spotted Narcissus hanging out by a stream and instantly fell in love with him.

However, he was so busy being completely selfabsorbed that he ignored Echo, and she wasted away from loneliness until nothing was left of

her but her voice. Thanks to this tragic story of unrequited love, daffodils are sometimes used to represent a love that is one-sided.

Later, the goddess Nemesis, although in some versions, it’s Venus, got wind of what had happened to Echo, so she decided it was time to teach Narcissus a lesson.

She led him to a stream, where he happened to notice the most beautiful young man he had ever seen – it was his own reflection, and he was so vain that he fell in love with his own image, transfixed, and forgetting to eat and sleep.

Some of the other gods were worried that Narcissus was going to starve to death, so they turned him into a flower, which now blooms every year in the spring.

Daffodils in Love

Despite the issues of Narcissus and Echo, daffodils still appear in some folklore as representative of holding a lover in high regard. They send the message that this person is the only one for you, and your feelings are constant. In some Middle Eastern magic, daffodils are considered an aphrodisiac.

Spiritual Daffodils

One prominent legend of the daffodil features in Christianity. It is said that on the night of the Last Supper, the daffodil appeared in the Garden of Gethsemane to comfort Jesus, who was saddened to know of his betrayal by Judas Iscariot.

Anthony C. Dweck says in The Folklore of the Narcissus, “The occurrence of wild daffodils is sometimes said to indicate the former site of a religious foundation. At Frittlestoke, near Torrington, Devon, it was recorded in 1797 that the people of the village call daffodils by the name Gregories, a name that coincided with the order of a neighboring monastery - the Canons of St Gregory … In both Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, it was generally said that wild daffodils indicated the site of a monastery. St Urian’s Copse is well known for its primroses and daffodils. There is a tradition that daffodils grow in profusion on one side of a track running through the copse because a religious building once stood there.”

Add potted daffodil bulbs, don’t worry if they’re blooming yet, to your altar for spring celebrations, along with other spring flowers such as forsythia, crocus, and snowdrops. Wear this flower close to your heart to draw love, but be careful that your love is not one-sided.

Herb-Pennyroyal Continued

Gender: Masculine or Feminine (depends on tradition) Planet: Mars or Venus (depends on tradition) Element: Fire or Earth (depends on tradition) Powers: Protection, Peace, Strength

Magical Uses and History: A member of the mint family, pennyroyal was historically used in Ancient Rome and Greece as a cooking herb.

Many old recipes call for its use alongside other herbs such as oregano, coriander, and lovage, especially in pork recipes. Its culinary uses endured into the Medieval period, but fell out of use shortly after, maybe due to its less than pleasant taste and abortive properties. However, due to its strong abortive properties as an emmenagogue (a menstruation stimulant), pennyroyal is deeply associated with midwifery.

As such, it can be used in spells related to encouraging menstruation, blood magic, and protection from unwanted pregnancies, especially for those in the sex industry.

Do not, however, ingest pennyroyal without proper medical guidance as the plant is toxic. Its toxic nature, however, makes it a great herb for general protection.

The scientific name Mentha peluqium is believed to originate from the Latin pulex meaning flea, alluding to its use as a flea repellent. It was historically rubbed on the body to repel fleas and has been used in modern times around the home to prevent fleas from entering.

(Do not spray directly on your pets or allow your pets to ingest the plant). Furthermore, pennyroyal is said to protect against the Evil Eye.

Charms and herbal sachets of pennyroyal were worn or hung in the home to protect the wearer from illwill, hexes, and curses.

The herb can also be used in hex or curse-breaking spells and the oil to anoint candles for similar magical purposes.

In Medieval Europe, boughs of pennyroyal were hung in sickrooms to heal and

protect those within from disease.

In other folklore, pennyroyal was placed in one’s shoes prior to traveling to protect the wearer and prevent their feet from tiring.

Finally, pennyroyal is associated with peace. Pennyroyal carried in the pocket is said to prevent quarrels while hanging it in your home is said to bring peace, even when tempers run high.

Pennyroyal can be used in a number of spells including: • Blood Magic • Protection

Spells • Hex & Curse

Breaking • Peace Spells

Medicinal Uses: Pennyroyal is rich in aromatic volatile oil which helps ease flatulence and abdominal colic as well as anxiety and spasmodic pain. Its main use, however, is as an emmenagogue to stimulate menstruation and uterine contractions. As such, it should be avoided during pregnancy. Due to its toxic nature, pennyroyal oil should not be taken internally.

Preparation and Dosage: Despite its toxicity, pennyroyal can be taken in small doses internally as a tea or tincture. However, use at your own risk. Its use is highly discouraged by all medical websites. To create an infusion, pour one cup of boiling water over 1-2 teaspoons of dried leaves and allow it to infuse for 10-15 minutes. Drink up to three times a day. As a tincture, 1-2 milliliters can be taken up to three times a day.

I love everything about Southern Louisiana history especially when it comes to voodoo and hoodoo, which is actually a religion for those that are not aware. For some reason I am strongly called to this religion and trying to incorporate it into my magical life.

I am in love with Mad ‘am Marie Laveau, the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans and everything she stands for. I have been in love with witchcraft since I was a child and as I research all that is in my magical life voodoo and hoodoo come up quite a bit. One of my favorite things about voodoo/ hoodoo is the gris gris bag aka spell bag, mojo bags etc.

The term gris-gris was said to derive from the Mande language, and the West African term juju, which means sacred.

One of the most famous practitioners using grisgris was Marie Laveau, the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans in the 19th century. Laveau was said to have inherited her magical powers from her African ancestors.

I have watched a ton of videos from a wonderful woman who is called Moma Sarah’s (Conjured Cardea) and she is incredible as she devotes her life to Mad ‘am Marie Laveau, so if you are interested in Voodoo or Hoodoo I highly suggest you check out her videos.

Gris Gris aka talisman and is also spelled grigri is a voodoo amulet originating in Africa. It is believed to protect the wearer from evil or to bring good luck.

Believe it or not in West African countries it is used as a method of birth control (really don’t know how that works but ok).

The Gris Gris consist of a small cloth bag, usually inscribed with verses and containing a ritual number of small objects, worn on the person. (Remember it is the intent).

The practice of using gris-gris, though originating in Africa, came to the US with enslaved Africans and was quickly adopted by practitioners of Voodoo.

In spite of the negative connotations of gris-gris, so called Gris-Gris doctors have operated in the Creole communities of Louisiana for some centuries and are looked upon favorably by the community.

In the 1800s, grisgris was used interchangeably in Louisiana to mean both bewitch and in reference to the traditional amulet.

In African history, the gris-gris was an amulet or symbol of good luck and spiritual protection.

The practice of using a gris-gris symbol was brought to America by African slaves near Senegal and Mali in the 17th & 18th centuries. The gris-gris is a small bag full of little objects specific to the person or place intended. However, the practice soon changed as it was brought to the Americas, and the grisgris were thought to bring black magic upon their victims. Slaves would often use the gris-gris against their owners, and some can still be seen adorning their tombs.

During this period, there were also reports of slaves cutting, drowning or otherwise manipulating the grisgris of others in order to cause harm.

Although in Haiti, gris-gris are thought to be a good amulet and are used as a part of a widely practiced religion; in the Cajun communities of Louisiana, gris-gris are thought to be a symbol of black magic and ill-fortune of which I personally do not believe, as it is all about the intent.

The gris-gris is typically used to sort out matters in love, finance, luck, legal issues or to reverse a hex. I truly believe that as long as you have good intent all will be good.

In Louisiana, where the practice of voodoo is wellknown, the gris-gris is used as a symbol of black magic. It includes two types of magic, homeopathic and sympathetic. Sympathetic is a symbol made to look just like the person intended. Homeopathic uses hair, clothing or something attached to the subject.

While making the gris gris bag one will pray over the ingredients and tie them into the bag, using a fabric color which aligns with that purpose. Then you will bless the gris gris bag with intention oils (you

can make your own intention oils) and focus on the bag’s intention throughout the entire process.

I personally like to use Crystals, Versus, Herbs and their Roots to bring about good health and or monetary value in one’s life.

One could make a gris gris bag out of some cloth and some thread and fill it with what you wish for the intent.

I purchased gift bags i.e. Organza bags, Hemp bags and 100 % organic cotton bags from amazon to make my gris gris bags.

To make a Money gris gris bag I will most likely use a green bag. A Money Spell (like one you would make for a money jar). A Crystal-like Green Aventurine or Citrine which activates the crown chakra and is used for financial gains and manifesting money.

One or two of the following herbs and roots: • Spearmint (attracting wealth and luck) • Patchouli (known for luck, luck and more luck) • Basil (aka tulsi which is a sacred plant in India and is linked with the Hindu goddess Lakshmi who is the goddess of abundance and holds the frequencies of peace, tranquility, success, happiness and good fortune) • Chamomile (has been used as a flower that brings luck, positive energy, and attracts money.)

Honeysuckle (enhances mindfulness and this is a key frequency to attracting anything you desire.)

Pine needles and tips, pine pollen and pine resin combined can be used to harness the energy of the pine and attract wealth.

Spices such as cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and star anise can also be used to attract money.

A gris gris bag should be carried or worn by its recipient. It is said that the person should never open their bag, get it wet or let others touch it. The idea is that the power will “spill out” of the bag if opened or gets wet, and that another person may put the wrong influence into the bag by touching a gris gris that is not their own.

It is said that on occasion the gris gris bag should be “charged” however to do this one would need to meditate and focus with the initial intent and re-anoint with the appropriate blessed oil from time to time.

I find that this is difficult especially when gifting the gris gris bag to the recipient. So, I just “gift” the bag with the blessed oil and intent from the beginning and send it on its way to the person I am gifting the bag to with instructions from above.

Alder trees feature often in Celtic Mythology and Folklore. They are said to be home to fairies, they are the symbol of Bran in Welsh Mythology and are most often associated with water, secrecy, nature, bad luck, spirituality, and balance.

Associations with Water: Never far from water, Alder trees can most often be found lining the banks of a stream, loch, or river, or in boggy wet ground and swamps.

Alder wood can survive completely submerged in water, and was often used for construction of buckets, pipes, bridges over water, and other construction in wet conditions. Parts of Venice, Italy are built on top of Alder piles which were driven in to the swamp. Many folk tales make note of the Alder connection to water. Alder was the symbol of Bran, the King of Briton in Welsh Mythology, who made several unlikely escapes across the seas and rivers.

The Blood of the Alder: Alder trees were a source of great mystery to the Celts. Their sap turns a deep red when exposed to the air, as if they could bleed when cut. The bleeding bark and affinity with water led to many negative superstitions about the trees.

Alders were considered highly sacred, mysterious and secretive, often thought of as representing nature itself and containing the souls of our ancestors. For this reason it was considered extremely bad luck to cut them down.

Secrecy, Superstition and Bad Luck: The theme of secrecy, bad luck, and concealment comes up again and again in Celtic Mythology in relation to Alder trees. Only the Hazel Tree was considered more unlucky than the Alder.

The Irish figure Deirdre of Sorrows was said to have hidden in an Alder wood with her lover, fleeing the King of Ireland, to whom she was betrothed. Coming upon an Alder when travelling was considered a bad omen, perhaps due to the soggy ground Alders thrive in, or the thick canopies that form when Alders grow

together and block out the sunlight.

Alder Trees as a symbol of balance: Like Ash trees, Alder trees produce both the male and female flowers. Unlike the Ash, the Alder produces one after the other, in a year long reproductive cycle.

Male Alder flowers are small, slender catkins, which gradually transition to the female flower (cones) in the Autumn, before falling off and growing new in Spring.

The unique transition of the flowering cycle of the Alder tree represents balance, nature, and new life.

Alder in the Ogham Alphabet: In Gaelic, the word for Alder is Fearn, which can also be found in the Ogham alphabet.

Alder Tree Jewelry and Tattoo symbolism: Alder Trees have a deep and rich meaning in Celtic Mythology and are a beautiful tree to consider for either Jewelry or as a Celtic Tattoo.

A tattoo of a specific species is more meaningful in my opinion than a generic stylised tree, and each species has its own unique meanings and folklore attached.

Specifically, the themes of balance, new life, and the souls of our ancestors are well

represented by the Alder tree.

The fruits and leaves of the Alder are unique and distinctive, and the uncommon transition from the male catkins to the female cone is rare amongst Celtic trees, making a beautiful piece representing masculinity, femininity, balance and new life.

Magical Uses and Folklore As a native American tree (eastern U.S. and Mexico), there’s not a lot of writing on flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) as it pertains to European-based witchcraft.

Southern Europe does have a plant called the Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas), which is in the dogwood family, and most of Europe and western Asia has the common dogwood (Cornus sanguinea). C. mas and C. sanguinea both flower, but neither of these are quite as showy as the big white or pink blooms of C. florida. Since all of these plants are related, it’s possible, even preferable, to make substitutions depending on what species are locally available to you.

Dogwood is associated with loyalty, secrets, wishes, protection, fertility, desire, and illusion. (The illusion part, in particular, makes a lot of sense — the flowers of the flowering dogwood aren’t actually flowers at all, they’re modified leaves.)

The dogwood is strongly tied with Christian mythology, since the flowers form a cross shape. It was believed that the wood was used to form crosses for crucifixion, so Jesus prevented the dogwood from ever growing large enough to be used for this purpose again. An old folk remedy for treating mange in dogs involved making a decoction of dogwood bark, and washing the affected areas with it. Leaves, bark, or flowers can be used as a protective charm.

As an herb of secrecy, it’s a good idea to include some dogwood leaves in a diary, grimoire, or Book of Shadows. An oil made from the flowers can be used to dress a letter and keep prying eyes off of it.

Make a wish come true by catching a drop of dogwood sap on a cloth on the evening of Midsummer, and wishing on it. Carry it until you get your desire, then bury the cloth.

It’s bad luck to bring dogwood flowers

into your home, or to burn the wood in your hearth.

Using Dogwood One theory for the etymology of “dogwood” is that the name stems from “dag,” from which we also get “dagger.”

This is related to the straightness and density of the wood — the sticks are pretty much ideal for crafting shafts for tools or weapons (Ötzi was found with dogwood arrows), and the wood is dense enough to sink in water.

In a practical sense, this makes dogwood an excellent material for crafting wands or other magical tools.

A lot of dogwood’s associations fit neatly into one another. Illusion, protection, and secrecy all blend well. I probably wouldn’t use dogwood in place of, for example, cayenne pepper as a protective herb because the energy is so different. Dogwood is subtler — it protects by concealment. It’s a smokescreen, not a fiery wall. Even its use as arrow shafts points to a plant that’s best used to take advantage of the shadows!

American flowering dogwood has four bracts. From a numerological standpoint, four is strength, stability, and pragmatism. This blends nicely with its use as an herb for protection and loyalty. Dogwood is useful in color magic, since the blooms can range from white, to yellow, to pink, to red. Even the leaves can turn from gold or green to pink, yellow, orange, or red.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day Woodlands! Did you know that the chance of finding a four-leaf clover is 1 in 10,000?

Hundreds of years ago in Ireland, the four-leaf clover became a symbol of luck with the four leaves representing faith, hope, love, and success.

The Druids (Celtic priests), in the early days of Ireland, believed that when they carried a three-leaf clover or shamrock, they could see evil spirits coming and have a chance to escape in time. Four-leaf clovers were Celtic charms, presumed to offer magical protection and ward off bad luck.

Children in the Middle Ages believed if they carried a four-leaf clover, they would be able to see fairies, and the first literary reference to suggest their good fortune was made in 1620 by Sir John Melton.

Color- Four Leaf Clover

Fast Facts About Four-Leaf Clovers • * There are approximately 10,000 three-leaf clovers for every “lucky” fourleaf clover. • * There are no clover plants that naturally produce four leaves, which is why four-leaf clovers are so rare. • * The leaves of fourleaf clovers are said to stand for faith, hope, love, and luck. • * It’s often said that Ireland is home to more four-leaf clovers than any other place, giving

meaning to the phrase “the luck of the Irish.” • * If you’re lucky enough to find a four-leaf clover, look for more!

If a clover plant produces a fourleaf clover, it’s more likely to produce another four-leaf lucky charm than plants that only produce three-leaf clovers. • * The fourth leaf can be smaller or a different shade of green than the other three leaves

Shamrocks and four-leaf clovers are not the same thing; the word

‘shamrock’ refers only to a clover with three leaves.
