We have covered many forms of divination in the past issues and this month we will be learning about another power tool: Water Scrying (also referred to as Hydromancy).
Scrying is a form of divination that involves staring into a reflective surface, such as a mirror, fire, or in this case, water. Hydromancy goes back thousands of years and involves the use of water to bring messages. Water is a metaphor of creation linked to the flow of the collective unconsciousness, also known as the Hall of Records, Akashic Records, Grid Harmonics, matrix of experience, etc. within reality. The visions that can be seen during a scrying session can often provide hints of things to come. Ancients would sit by a calm body of water and watch its flowing motion create patterns that they would interpret. Often a spirit would appear within the water and bring a telepathic message. Great myths were created about sea creatures who live in the water. The ancient Greeks believed that nature spirits dwelled in fresh water.
In ancient Initiation ceremonies one would spend hours gazing into a sacred pool of water, or large sacred urn filled with water, to receive messages from the gods. This generally involved time and focus, and the abilities of the initiate to focus within. This brought visions of gods and the future.
Many indigenous people use some form of water divination to receive messages. It was mostly subjective, but often more defining. Nostradamus, a French astrologer, practiced Hydromancy as a means of receiving messages and predictions, through the movement of water in a bowl. He recorded what he saw, combined with psychic messages, with amazing accuracy.

or ocean. You can also use bottled, from a well, or tap. Water with great energy collected from a full moon or after standing in the sun will help your scrying session. The more you learn to focus your mind while gazing into the water, the more quickly you open yourself up to receiving messages and understanding their meaning as most messages are cryptic.
Water scrying is best done on a calm day outside in nature beside a body of water where you can gaze. Find a spot to sit down that you are drawn to, relax and look within the body of water. Wait and observe. A pebble can also be dropped into the water and the ripples can be read as they form. You may see an image appear in the water’s movement as it is always in transition. Some prefer to gaze into the water at night in the light of the moon as lunar energies are linked to the goddess.
To scry water indoors, begin by finding a quiet area that is free of distraction so that you can focus your mind. Select a bowl that you will place your water into. A bowl that is black, white, or metal that is also free of patterns is best. Set the bowl in a dry level space to where you can easily observe it. Gaze into the still water and focus your mind until images appear. For step-by-step guidance, I encourage you to look into Aletheia Luna’s tutorial on scrying. Her techniques are well explained and easy to follow along. There are also images to show how she sets up her spaces for scrying that are very helpful.
