Golf Course Update

Dear Member:

The course is doing well as it currently recovers from the aerification process. The wild swings in temperature have been challenging but more importantly we are undergoing a drought that ended with temperatures hitting almost 90! We have watered more so far this year than in any other by this time and our wells have been running non-stop since the start of April. We have excellent wells and the next week appears to be bringing an increased chance of precipitation so we look forward to that.

The spring has also continued the same windy pattern of weather that the winter did. Wind has created some desiccation on the course which we are finally recovering from (1 green, new putting green). Here is a good description from Penn State on what exactly desiccation is:

“Desiccation occurs when turf is unprotected by snow cover and subject to drying cold winds for extended periods during the winter. Under these conditions, the exposed turf can lose significant moisture in crown tissues”

Here is a quick run-down of the playing surfaces and various projects we have been working on.

Greens:

• Greens performing very well this spring despite dry conditions

• Core aerified using 3/8” hollow tines (small holes) – we do have some scarring from the high heat we experienced while aerifying

New Putting Green NOTE – The putting green at the driving range has been very slow to wake up. As mentioned above the green felt the brunt of numerous windy days over the winter and the spring. We will possibly cover it late next winter to help avoid this. The green is healthy and we are not worried but it is also a good reminder that it takes more than one season for new turf to become completely established.

Tees and Approaches:

• Core aerified using ½” hollow tines

• Amendments and sand brushed in to holes

Fairways:

• Fairways have recovered from our off-season poa spray program. Numerous patches of poa died and we have over-seeded those spots with perennial ryegrass.

• New bluegrass sections are currently being aerified with ¾” solid tines.

Golf Course Update

(continued from page 7)

Projects:

• Stone steps at 7 tee – Merrifield Garden Centers completed the work. A hand-made railing was installed at the blue tee steps due to possible safety risks. Two of the steps have a small layer peeling off – we have contacted Merrifield and they are coming out to address.

• Tee stations – We have renovated the tee stations using a decorative stone. This stone will not wash out very easily and will have less weeds than the crush and run that we used before. Some of the 6x6 wood outlining the box will need to be replaced but we are quite pleased with the look.

• Crossover landscaping – Merrifield Garden Center helped us to redesign the plantings around the crossover. These plants are all deer resistant and will be bolstered with annual flowers.

• Enclosure replacement – We are looking for adequate replacements for the small enclosures throughout the course (1, 4, 10, 18). The old ones were hand made by a carpenter and we are struggling to find something that looks good.

• Cart path repair – we successfully replaced a few broken panels at 8 green and will replace a few more around the course. We did this “in-house” and it appears to have gone well.

• PoaCure:

8 Currently the plan is to make our first application on greens on May 1st.

8 We also plan on spraying our new bluegrass fairways as well as approaches and some tees.

While the weather continues to swing wildly and impact the course in various ways, we are still pleased with the turf conditions this spring. We look forward to another good year and as usual –I look forward to seeing you on the course!

8 SCORECARD

Retired Men’s Golf Team

We kicked off our 2023 season with two early April matches. The results were not ideal but not too bad: one home win and one road tie.

ICC at Home vs. Army Navy Fairfax April 6th

Sports writers and fans in the Washington Area are grumbling daily at the ineptitude of the Nationals baseball team. They should focus instead on the eptitude (is that a word?) of the ICC Retired Men’s golf team. The ICC team got off to a strong start for the 2023 season by downing AN Fairfax 23 to 13.

Six of our pairs delivered 3 points: Todd Groome/Stan Levin, Bob Byers/John Argodale, Scott Glaus/Gary Avakian, Doug Counts/Dave Laufer, Kujung Kim/George Sill, and Jack Rogers/Richard Morton. Larry Hines/Phil Meyer took home 2.5 points. Doug Counts and Dave Laufer shot a net 10 under par 61, lapped the field, and took 1st place in the Sweeps. A match of cards for pairs shooting 65 determined the next three Sweeps winners. Second place went to Larry Hines/Phil Meyer and fourth place to Bob Byers/John Argodale.

The Co-Stars of the Week were Larry Hines and Rolando Arrivillaga at 4 under net par. Scott Glaus made a distinguished return by shooting 3 under net par. Doug Counts also came in at 3 under. Other worthies include Bob Byers at 2 under net par and Greg Krisanda at 1 under. Breaking 80 gross were: Larry Hines (77), Scott Glaus (78), and Lefty Cienfuegos (79).

ICC At Ft. Belvoir April 13th

On this day in history, many noteworthy events occurred. My alma mater’s founder Thomas Jefferson was born in 1743. My wife’s dissertation subject Samuel Beckett was born in 1906. And golfing genius Tiger Woods won his first Masters in 1997.

Also, on this day the U.S. armed forces at Fort Sumter South Carolina surrendered to the Confederate rebels. Some 162 years later, however, the ICC Retired Men’s golf team refused to surrender the Fort Belvoir golf course to the attacking Fort Belvoir RM golfers. The final score was an 18 to 18 tie. Still, winning on the road is difficult, so a tie helps us in the long term.

Three of our pairs delivered 3 points: Larry Hines/Bob Levin, Kye Lee/Tom Haselhorst, and Binh Tran/George Sill.

Lefty Cienfuegos/Bill Hayes took home 2.5 points, and Jim Judkins/Dave Laufer won 2 points. We took 3 of 4 Sweeps prizes. Binh Tran/George Sill finished 2nd, Lefty Cienfuegos/ Bill Hayes 3rd, and Kye Lee/Tom Haselhorst 4th.

As for individual performances, the Star of the Week was George Sill, who shot a fantastic 75 – some 10 strokes below net par. Bill Hayes and Richard Morton came in at 6 under net par. Dave Laufer finished 4 under. Tom Haselhorst and Ken Schutz recorded a 3 under. Bob Levin, Kujung Kim, and Scott Dratch scored 2 under net par.

ICC Ladies 18ers

Blooming Everywhere!

The 18ers kicked off the season with our Opening Day event on March 28th. The event was a tremendous success with great fun and friendship. We played a “Bingo Game” that required Bingo items such as “birdies,” “hit a tree” and “green in regulation.” Congratulations to our two winners (Bea Pham and Diane Utley) who both managed to complete their Bingo Cards on the very first hole! We had a great turnout with almost half of our members playing. The Bingo event was followed by a delicious buffet lunch. New members are welcome to join us anytime! If you are interested in joining the 18ers, please contact Chris Park in the Pro Shop.

Update on ARFAX

The ARFAX season got underway on Wednesday, March 29th with the Ice Breaker Tournament at River Bend Country Club. Fortunately, the weather was nice and not “ice breaker material” as it has been in years past. Our very own Cindy Cox was in the team that took 1st Place Low Gross in this step aside scramble event. Nicely done Cindy and her team!!!

Our match play started on April 11th with a match against Washington Golf played at Westwood Country Club. Overall, our team played well and is sitting in 3rd place just 2 shots behind Washington Golf, the 2nd place team. There are three matches left to play. Great job, ladies! Go, 18ers!!

It is not too late to join our ICC ARFAX team. The cost is only $40 and it allows you to play in the summer

tournaments. Cup tournaments are coming up in June, July and August. In addition, there will be two events scheduled as two-lady events. If you are interested, please let Kristina Ringqvist or Bette Rutherford know and they will get your membership set up.

Update on WDCGA

The WDCGA team has started match play. ICC is in Division 5 where each club fields a four-person team. This is the first time in many years that ICC is fielding a team. Regular members are Bea Pham, Cindy Cox, Susan Sharer and co-captain Sally Nadanyi. Play will be against Argyle, Manor, Columbia, Army-Navy-FX and TPC Potomac. Good luck ladies. The match play will continue until the end of May.

Mark your calendar for the Member-Guest event which is scheduled on Tuesday, June 13th. The theme will be “Rock Around the Course – Rock the Drive, Roll the Putt!” Shannon Tully has graciously volunteered to coordinate the event. If you would like to help and “rock and roll” with Shannon, please contact her at bsjdtully@cox.net. This event is open to all ICC lady golfers.

Outdoor Courts Are Open

The four outdoor Har-Tru tennis courts are open and in use! There is no charge for an outdoor court reservation, but guest fees still apply to the indoor courts. Remember, you can always get some extra practice on the backboard on the

north side of court 7 or schedule the ball machine indoors.

If you are moving indoors from the outdoor courts, please be sure to clean your tennis shoes properly before entering the tennis bubble.

Thank you to everyone that came out to the Open House on April 18th in the clubhouse ballroom to meet the reps, coaches, get fitted for team suits and place spirit wear orders. We were excited to share all our fun with new families and catch up with our veteran swimmers. During the Open House, your swim reps Dan Ortiz, Faith Rodill and Caren Suarez were present to answer all questions. There were also sample spirit wear, sizing kits and volunteer opportunities for all the fun that is summer swim.

ALL are welcome!! To our new ICC members or member families who have yet to participate, we’d love for you to get started this season!

who are not quite ready to compete in meets but are ready to learn the techniques of competitive swimming. They should be adjusted to the water and able to take direction from the coaches. Little Chompers are expected to have already learned the basic swim skills of kicking and floating, with the ability to comfortably submerge their face and body underwater and swim away from the wall to a coach.

Little Chompers will have a 30-minute swim practice beginning June 19th tentatively at 11:00 a.m. They are invited to any social activities, dinners, and meets (to watch and cheer but not swim until they are capable).

*NOTE: After time trials, swimmers who cannot swim the length of the pool without stopping will be referred to the Little Chompers Program. Once a swimmer is ready to move to the regular swim team with coach approval, the swimmer will “graduate” from the Little Chompers and join the appropriate age-group practice.

Our season is not possible without all the help of our amazing volunteers! Many opportunities to get involved!

FITNESS

April was a busy month for the Fitness Dept. We replaced the weight stack equipment with Cybex Ion brand equipment. Truly enhancing our gym’s modern, spacious atmosphere and ultra cool vibe. I had the pleasure of hosting a golf fitness clinic with a few of the ladies 9-holers. I demonstrated a variety of drills to improve flexibility and mobility. How combining the two will promote greater clubhead speed! Thank you to the ladies for participating.

Personal Fitness Training

We are offering a free one-hour session with a trainer. Whether it’s losing weight, gaining more muscles or improving you golf game, we have a trainer that can help. It’s a great way to try out one-on-one training if you have never done it before. Contact the Fitness Director, Cari Pacheco, for details.

Group Classes

Get your group exercise class sessions done in three ways: in studio, outdoor and ZOOM online. Some of the classes will have two options such as in-studio (or outdoors) and a Zoom live stream. Members will need to reserve a spot for classes that are in studio only. No reservations needed for ZOOM or outdoor classes.

You can join the monthly membership group for $35 monthly. This will give you unlimited access to all group exercise classes. By joining our monthly program, you will have access to recorded group classes. This is a great way to stay with your favorite classes when you cannot connect on their day and time. For members that would like to join a class occasionally, we offer a drop in per class option for $15 per class. Please email the fitness director at cari. pacheco@internationalcc.com for more information.

Cari Pacheco is a TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) Golf Fitness specialist. Please contact her at cari.pacheco@ internationalcc.com to schedule a complimentary assessment. She can work with golfers to improve flexibility; strengthen core and glute muscles, achieve stability and overall kinetic balance – the key components to getting more power and consistency in your golf swing.
