I wanted to take a moment to remind everyone about a few essential practices while playing the course: raking the bunkers, repairing ball marks on the greens, and maintaining divots.
Raking Bunkers: One of the hallmarks of our course is the pristine condition of our bunkers. To ensure the best playing experience for all, it’s crucial that every golfer takes the time to properly rake the bunkers after each shot. By smoothing out the sand and removing footprints and club marks, we create a fair and enjoyable playing surface for everyone. Enter and exit from the low area of the bunker – do not walk up banks. CLICK HERE to learn how to rake a bunker.
Divot Maintenance: In addition to raking bunkers and repairing ball marks, we kindly request your cooperation in maintaining our fairways by addressing divots. When you find yourself taking a divot on the fairway, please take the time to fill it with the provided sand mix or replace the divot if possible. This simple act of care and consideration helps our fairways recover quickly and ensures a consistently smooth playing surface for everyone.
Walking Cart & Electric Push Cart Usage Guidleines: When using walking push carts and electric push carts,
please remember not to take them on the tee boxes. Additionally, keep them at least 20 to 30 feet away from the green to avoid any damage to the area around the green. It’s crucial never to take them between a bunker and a green, as this can disturb the playing conditions for others. Nathaniel has placed signs on the course to guide you, so please pay attention to these signs for the best course navigation experience. Also, please refrain from taking carts onto the driving range tee to ensure safety and minimize interference with practice sessions.
By working together and practicing these vital tasks, we can enhance the overall quality of our course and preserve the pleasure of the game for all players. Your cooperation and dedication to these practices are highly appreciated.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to ICC members Mike Howell and Paul Gural. They achieved an impressive victory in the 12th Virginia State Golf Association Super Senior Four-Ball Championship hosted by Fawn Lake Country Club. Howell and Gural won by a narrow margin of a single stroke, posting an impressive two-day aggregate total score of 10-under, 134. Congratulations Mike and Paul!

Dear Member:
Summer has arrived in a big way which has forced the maintenance department into playing defense. There are few plants in Virginia that survive, much less thrive, when temperatures remain at 95 degrees with high humidity and no rain for extended periods of time.
As mentioned in a prior email, we are implementing our summer survival practices on the golf course. This means we will move to Cart Path Only more often in the hot afternoons as well as utilize our new mats at the driving range more frequently. It is unfortunate that we have to do this but it is absolutely necessary if we want to keep the golf course in decent shape.
While we will work hard to keep everything nice and healthy, please keep in mind that it is impossible to go through a weather pattern such as this one without a few scars to show for it. If you watched the US Open at Pinehurst you saw that even the best clubs in the world brown out on the edges during rough stretches of weather. As a matter of fact, Pinehurst actually removed 650 irrigation heads in an effort to show what a more “natural” golf course should look like and to also be environmentally responsible in a region of the country that can struggle with water supply. The USGA has worked hard to get out the message that lush and plush during the summer months is actually not what we should be striving for.
With all that being said, we have a very good water supply and are able to keep most of our grass fairly green. There are some un-irrigated parts of the golf course however, that are definitely starting to brown out. For example, between 2 and 3 fairways and to the left of 6, 12 and 14. Those areas not only have little to no irrigation but they also are closer to the tree-line and must fight for water with the trees. On the left side of #6 we are actually trying to improve our irrigation coverage so we can prevent some of those duck-hooks from bounding in to the creek!
We are also seeing the signs of an old irrigation system in parts of the course. New irrigation was
installed around all of our greens and new tees but the rest of the course is irrigated by a system installed in roughly 1990. During periods of on-and-off rain, small issues with our system do not cause visible harm. During extended droughts such as this however, even a sprinkler that rotates just a bit slower than it should impacts the quality of the turf.
Take care and I hope to see you out on the course!

The 2024 ICC Ladies Member Guest was held on Monday, June 10th and Tuesday, June 11th with 72 ladies participating. The theme for this year’s member guest was Triple Crown and the ladies enthusiastically embraced the theme with cart decorations and creative outfits on both days.
The member guest was set to begin Monday afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. check in, but many members and their guests began arriving as early as 1:00 p.m. to decorate their golf carts. Rose garlands, banners, inflatable hobby horses, mini bourbon bottles and more decorated the carts. The mood was quite festive with members and their guests donning Derby style hats of all sizes and colors and many teams with matching outfits. Best in Show Judges, Chris Park, Lisi Mueller and Tom Melideo had a tough challenge in determining the best overall cart decorations and team outfits.
The 9-hole short par 3 tournament began at 3:00 p.m. This was an individual gross event with the holes no longer than 110 yards and most holes less than 100 yards. Players hunted for the little gold balloon numbers marking the unusual tee box locations. This was a fun event for everyone. Congratulations to Akemi Maegawa for winning the

front nine with an impressive score of 26! Congratulations to Bea Pham for winning the back nine with an equally impressive score of 28!
The Wakefield patio was beautifully decorated with balloons, flowers and a bubble machine. The returning par 3
A very special thank you to Cindy Cox and Bea Pham for organizing our 2024 Ladies Member Guest tournament. Their dedication and attention to detail provided for an outstanding two day event. From picking a fun theme, decorations, food, new creative par three tournament and putting contest to finish with the 18-hole two best ball tournament and lunch with awards involved countless hours of planning. All of their planning made our members and guests feel special and made for a very memorable event. Our club and the course were beautiful and the weather was perfect! Looking forward to 2025! Thank you Cindy and Bea for a job well done!!
teams were delighted to find an open wine bar, Mint Juleps and cold glasses of champagne waiting to quench their thirst. There was a buffet of delicious derby style food for everyone to enjoy as they watched or participated in the putting contest on our beautiful new putting green.
The putting contest consisted of six holes; each one marked with a hobby horse. Upon completion, players turned in scorecards and the six lowest scores were determined. Those players then battled it out in a Steeplechase contest, eliminating players on each hole until Meghan Tidwell and Vicki Fanning were left to putt for the win. Congratulations to Vicki Fanning of Rivercreek!! A special Thanks to Tom and Lisi for making the putting contest fun for everyone.
Everyone was back bright and early Tuesday morning for an 18-hole Two Best Ball tournament. Our superb ICC staff set up coffee service, orange juice, delicious chocolate muffins, croissants, hard boiled eggs and fresh fruit for the ladies to enjoy. A cart snack buffet table with a variety of snacks and fresh fruit was set up just outside the pro shop.
The weather was cool, but the atmosphere was charged with excitement and anticipation. Each team of four players was assigned a team name in honor of a Triple Crown or Kentucky Derby winner with the matching jockey silks attached to the front of their cart. Several of the players dressed as jockeys on Tuesday. The traditional bugle call to post played over the speakers to signal it was time for the tournament to begin. The ladies were off to the races at 9:00 a.m. for a fun and competitive tournament.
Congratulations to our First Place Net winners, Clare Kersten, Rosanna Kwok, Theresa Li and Leslie Stone!
Congratulations to Michelle Whitescarver for Longest Drive!!
Congratulations to Carolyn Bowman for Closest to the Pin!!!
Congratulations to the Best in Show Team, Susan Messick, Carolyn Byers, Karen McGrath and Carole Scott!!
Everyone gathered in the ballroom for lunch and awards after completion of the golf tournament. The ballroom was set up with another delightful buffet of Derby style foods and beverages. The tables were decorated with jockey silk signs with team names, red rose centerpieces, confetti, and racing themed scratch off lottery tickets. The ticket winners received

a sleeve of 2024 Ladies Member guest golf balls. Dessert was a spice cake with bourbon flavored ice cream.
A very special Thanks to the golf staff, especially Tom Melideo for early planning, format ideas and making it all come together. To Lisi for scorecard design, course set up, putting contest and much behind the scenes assistance. And a Very Special Thank You to Chris Park for assistance with our special guest gift, for helping six members find a guest and for taking over 200 photos of the two day event and putting together a great video that captures the whole event.
A very special Thank you to the Catering Department and staff, especially Kristin and Alana for providing their time, support and ideas to make the ladies member guest a memorable and joyful event. We appreciate the long hours and dedication the catering and kitchen staff put into making the ladies member guest a success.
Of course, a heartfelt thank you goes out to all the members who attended the member guest. It would not have been possible without your support and enthusiasm. Thank you to the volunteers who helped with ideas, support and set up. Finally, a gracious thanks to Bea Pham and Cindy Cox for co-chairing the ICC Ladies Member Guest. There is a
rumor going around that they are already planning next year’s member guest. Stay tuned.

As a long-suffering fan of my hometown Cleveland Guardians (nee Indians) and Browns, I know a lot about losing. Still, I can’t explain why we keep losing our RM matches. Our mid-June record is 2 wins, 6 losses, and 1 tie.
Given how well our team played, we could have won. Eight of our 24 players shot net even par or better, which is usually a recipe for victory. Unfortunately, Springfield did a little bit better and defeated us narrowly, 20 to 16.
We had four out of the 12 pairs claiming a majority of points. Jeff Almo/Bob Bowman won all 3 points. Jim Stryker/Scott Dratch garnered 2.5 points. Phil Meyer/Thong Nguyen and Bob Levin/Chuck Yuska secured 2.0-point victories. For the Sweeps, Jim Stryker/Scott Dratch shot an excellent net 61 and won 1st place. Larry Hines/Jim Whitescarver shot a net 65 and took 4th place.
Individually, shooting in the 70s gross were Kye Lee with a 75 and Larry Hines with a 78. The Star of the Week at 5 under net par was Kye Lee. Scott Dratch finished at 3 under, Gary Avakian at 2 under, and Bob Waters at 1 under. A large group shot net even par: Larry Hines, Jim Whitescarver, Jim Stryker, Chuck Yuska, and Norm Taylor (alt.)
Another match, another valiant effort, another loss….The Springfield team defeated us by a score of 24 to 12.
Two pairs won all 3 points: Larry Hines/Jim Stryker and Doug Counts/Tom Hammel. Tony Bui/Lefty Cienfuegos secured a 2-point victory. For the Sweeps, Larry Hines/Jim Stryker shot an excellent net 62 and won 1st place.
Shooting in the 70s gross were Larry Hines (74), Jim Stryker (77), and Kye Lee (79). The Star of the Week at net 3 under par was Larry Hines. Jim Stryker and Kye Lee finished at net 1 under par. Doug Counts and Greg Krisanda shot net even par.
Mount Vernon defeated us by a score of 25.5 to 10.5.
Two pairs captured 2 points: Kye Lee/Jim Whitescarver and Dan Harris/Thong Nguyen. Despite shooting a very respectable net 63, Scott Glaus/Bob Levin and Bob Ingalls/ Bob Bowman merely tied their matches with 1.5 points and didn’t place in the Sweeps. In fact, Mount Vernon took all 4 places in the Sweeps.
Shooting in the 70s gross – all with 76s – were Larry Hines, Scott Glaus, and Kye Lee. The Star of the Week at net 2 under par was Kye Lee. Scott Glaus, Bill Bender (new to the team), and Bob Ingalls finished at net 1 under. Dan Harris and Tony Pica came through with net even par.

ICC Lady Niners are making their mark beyond ICC playing in local A and B Team Matches of the MVTMA. The team of Sue Messick, Mary Lou Hines, Raine Coons and Barb Cushman (right) represented ICC in a B Team Match at Riverbend back in early June. The A Team has two upcoming matches in July – one at Montgomery and one at Kenwood country clubs. Keep playing great golf, ladies!
By the way, did you know you can play a B Team match if your 18-hole handicap index is between 32 and 47 – and an A-Team match if your handicap index is between 5.0-16.0 (half of 18 hole handicap index)?
It’s a fun way to play golf as a team. Please reach out to either Susan Messick (B Team Captain) or Michele Hoffman (A Team) if you are interested in representing ICC at these matches.
Lady Niner events in July will include:
July 3rd: Open Play
(Wear Red, White and Blue!)
1:00 p.m. Clinic: Putting and putting drills clinic
July 10th: Open Play
1:00 p.m. Clinic: Fairway woods and hybrids
July 17th: Open Play (Texas Scramble)
July 24th Open Play (Bring a Guest $25)
July 31st : Open Play (Game: Count Odd Holes Only)
Remember, it’s not too late to join the Lady Niners!! Our season goes through October. Join us!! Contact Lisa Odeh or Lisa Tureson to find out more. Sign up is also available in the golf shop.

We’d like you all to properly meet Rudy Ventura, our head maintenance staff. He certainly had big shoes to fill with Christian Escabar’s departure, but he has done a very nice job keeping us in great shape and providing the high standard of facilities that we provide our members.
Rudy came from El Salvador two years ago where he was a flight attendant. He joined our ICC Family with golf maintenance in January of 2023 and transitioned to our tennis staff last October. He enjoys surfing and skateboarding during his time outside the club when he is not working at his evening job. We are grateful to have him on our staff.
Start your 4th off with a bang! An explosive all-level cardio kicks off your 4th of July before all the eating and the fireworks. Get your heart racing with fun tennis mini-games, energetic music, and then wrap it up with great company and a Corona! We will start at 10am and have an hour of tennis to start your great day of freedom celebration.
Sign-up HERE, in the tennis shop or call (703) 449-3432!

ICC’s juniors have a chance to go see the Citi Open with their peers too! On Thursday, August 1st at 1:45 p.m. families will gather at ICC for a 2:00 p.m. departure towards the Fitzgerald Tennis Center at Rock Creek Park in D.C. If there is enough interest, we’ll rent a bus to and from ICC and the Citi Open tournament, arriving back at ICC at 10:30 p.m. This tournament is a great opportunity for the children of ICC to see some of the best tennis players in the world live, in person, and in their own backyard. Children must be accompanied by an adult for this trip (parent or another agreed adult member).
Ticket/Bus prices will depend on the number of interested parties and the size of the bus rented. The cost of your child or family’s tickets can be charged to your ICC member number. Your ICC Gators opened up the season on June 8th with our first home meet against the Country Club of Fairfax. Since then, we have competed in three more of our scheduled meets – beating Springfield Golf and Country Club and Trump National Golf Club. In addition, our relay teams swam hard and fast in the Blue Division Relay for the DCCL. We are so impressed by all the fast swimming.
Above all we are most proud of the way our swimmers cheer each other on, build each other up and show up day after day to work hard. Our team is full of heart and grit as shown by Lauren Tain whom broke our previously held club record by Bridget Kennedy for girls 9-10 fly at a time of 16.49 seconds.
The Gators head into their last meet at home against the River Bend Golf and Country Club on July 13th with a special Senior Send Off.
We welcome everyone to join in on the fun!
