From the General Manager
By Lee Douglas
I hope everyone has shaken off the winter blues and ready for a great Spring season at ICC.
We will be kicking off our Spring membership season with our Discover ICC initiative on April 1st. If you haven’t received an email by now, you will be receiving our initiative details in the near future. Please note that we are very close to our membership caps in most membership classifications and foresee ICC having a waitlist soon after we introduce this discover initiative. Please take the time to refer a new member to ICC – for more details please reach out to Beatrice Santos for more information.
As many of you have noticed, the Club remains quite busy across the board. Golf utilization remains high due to a mostly mild stretch of winter (unfortunately due to the roller coaster temperatures, our turf isn’t quite growing yet). Racquets and fitness facilities continue to see high utilization. Our member dining continues to exceed budget and prior year usage. And, finally, our club events and member banquets are seeing usage numbers we have never seen before.
With Spring, we also unlock many member favorite events and dining promotions that will take place over the next couple of months:
• Fried Chicken Night and Live Music in our Pub on Thursday, April 6th
• Our Annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 8th
• Our Easter Brunch on Sunday, April 9th
• Trivia Night on Thursday, April 20th
• Austrian Wine Dinner on Saturday, April 29th
• Cinco de Mayo on Friday, May 5th
• Nine & Dine on Saturday, May 6th
• Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday, May 14th
Over the past several months we have taken on several capital improvement projects across the Club.
One of the biggest improvements has been our Club’s Wi-Fi with speeds in excess of 400mbps in most clubhouse locations and we plan to expand on other areas of the Club (Bubble, Pool Deck, etc. in the very near future). We have painted the exteriors of both our Clubhouse & Racquet/
Fitness facilities, installed new steam boilers for our steam rooms in the Clubhouse, and the 1st phase of new fitness equipment has been installed. Our new stone foot bridges have been installed on holes 15 & 16 as well as new stone steps on 7 tee. Ray and Jazz are enjoying a new security cart to ensure those geese continue to migrate away from ICC, and new furniture has been ordered for our Pre-Function lounge as well as additional exterior seating for the Covered Terrace. In the relative near future you will also start to see our waitstaff with tableside point sale iPads (this will expedite transferring your order back to the kitchen tremendously). We have ordered all new HVAC units for the Racquet/Fitness Center, and many other projects to go.
It is great to see all of the member engagement at ICC, and I hope to see you around the Club.

Golf Course Update
By Nathaniel Guldseth, Golf Course Superintendent
Dear Member:
The golf course continues to experience heavy play during this off-season and the grass is beginning to show signs of wear and tear already. We need everyone’s help by paying attention to areas of high traffic stress and avoiding them as much as possible. For example – many of our tee banks are thinning out due to constant pull cart traffic. We have placed some signs out next to tees – for example at 17 white/blue tee – where we are asking you to keep your pull cart on the path. Until the grass starts growing the only option we have to protect it is to keep traffic off of that area.
The maintenance staff as well as some contractors we have hired continue to hammer out numerous projects on the property:
• Sodding tree stump holes and thin turf throughout the course.
• Attaching loose yardage marker and junior tee plates to cart paths (this is a slow process due to having to drill holes in to concrete to anchor plates in – numerous types of adhesives have failed).
• Repairing broken sections of cart path.
• Installing stone steps at 7 blue and silver tees (with Merrifield Garden Center).
• Installing drainage between 15 green and 16 tee.
• Adding irrigation heads to the left rough on 6 fairway.
• Cleaning pine straw beds as well as weeding and mulching normal beds throughout the property.
• Widening and installing new mats for walk bridges on 7.
• Re-designing the ornamental plantings at the Crossover.
This spring we will also be doing a fair amount of seeding in mostly the fairways but also some rough. Our winter applications to keep poa annua in check in the fairways were
very successful so we will now over seed the areas where poa died with perennial ryegrass.
We also have numerous areas in the rough where tree roots and erosion are thinning the turf dramatically (right of 10, left 12, far left of 13 near cart path). This spring we will do a combination of sodding and seeding to help these areas. These spots need a few inches of top-soil to flatten out the area and to give the turf the best opportunity to survive among tree roots.
We have more projects than time to write about so please feel free to email me with any questions about what we have going on. Once again I cannot stress enough how much we need everyone’s help in maintaining the course. Ball marks repair and divot replacement/repair have never been as important as it is now.
As I have also mentioned before please keep in mind that there are times when we are Cart Path Only and it is NOT DUE TO MOISTURE. We have received comments and questions about that recently so to be clear we have to manage traffic as best we can during the off-season. Many courses are Cart Path Only starting December 1st and remain that way until sometime in the spring regardless of snow or rain amounts.
I hope all is well with you and as usual I hope to see you out on the course!

Retired Men’s Golf Team
By Bob Levin
As our Florida golfers head north to join their brethren who stayed close to home in Virginia, the ICC Retired Men’s Team gears up for another season of competing against 15 other country clubs in the Northern Virginia Retired Men’s Golf Association (NVRMGA) league.
In addition to five new team members mentioned in last month’s Scorecard, the team has added Steve St. Louis, Matt Bergeron, and Jimmy (Lefty) Cienfuegos.
On March 23rd, NVRMGA team officers gathered at Westwood Country Club to finalize division structure and
playoff eligibility. Decisions made at the meeting will be shared directly with the team by the end of March.

By Sally Nadanyi
~ ~ Spring is Here ~ ~
By the time you read this article, the 18ers will have played the Opening Day with lots of fun and friendship followed by a lunch. It is never too late to join this fun group if you are an ICC lady golfer. Contact Shelby Harvey who is the chairperson at plslharvey@aol.com or talk to Chris Park in the pro-shop.
Many of the 18ers attended a golf rules session offered by our head professional Tom Melideo on March 7th. Thank you, Tom, for updating us with golf rules so that we are well prepared for upcoming match plays and golf tournaments.
Mark your calendar for the MemberGuest event, which will be held on Tuesday, June 13th. The theme will be “Rock Around the Course – Rock the Drive, Roll the Putt!” Shannon Tully has graciously volunteered to coordinate the event. If you would like to help and “rock and roll” with Shannon, please contact her at bsjdtully@cox.net. This event is open to all ICC lady golfers.
Two-lady team match play which was inaugurated last year is back again with some modifications. Please refer to the enclosed flyer (see page 12) for details. Registration is open to all ICC lady golfers and closes on April 15th. Hope to see you all on the golf course hitting long and straight.

ICC Lady Niners
By Heather Pontz
Hello Lady Golfers!
April will see our Lady Niners in full swing with three open play days on Wednesday mornings and two Wednesday early-afternoon 1-hour clinics. The schedule for the whole season can always be found on the club website under the “Golf” pull-down list and the “Ladies 9 Holers” link.
Even if you miss the Lady Niners Opening Day event (shot-gun start at 9:00 a.m. with lunch afterwards) on March 29th, it’s not too late to join!! Just let the Golf Shop know or contact Lisa Tureson or Lisa Odeh to sign up. The cost is $40 for the entire season which goes through October. This is a great laid-back, stress-free group, where we all play and progress at our own pace!
More Lady Niner Info
• Once you become a Lady Niner, you will receive emails from Travis Obertach in the golf shop, inviting you to sign up for the following Wednesday’s round. Add yourself to a tee time with others or sign up your whole group. If you’re brand new to the Lady Niners group, Sarah Shin is our New Member Greeter and would be happy to play with you and introduce you around to others.
• Handicaps: Please contact the golf shop if you would like to sign up for a Handicap. If you are going to play regularly, we highly recommend you sign up and begin to track your scores (no matter how high or low they are). The golf shop can get you started and will post scores for your Wednesday morning rounds or you can post your own through the VSGA or GHIN apps.
Any Lady Niners interested in playing in our upcoming A&B Matches and Invitationals please contact:
Michele Hoffman – AMatch Captain
Susan Messick – BMatch Captain
Sue Martin – Invitational Chair
Please see the MVTMA calendar on page 14.

Happy Anniversary
– One Year at ICC –Andrew Curtis
Our Director of Pickleball and Tennis Professional, Andrew Curtis celebrates his one-year anniversary of joining the staff here at ICC. Andrew is 28yrs of age with over 11yrs of teaching experience. We are proud of the pickleball community and expansion of tennis engagement he has provided.
Andrew has pioneered classes and open play opportunities for all levels of pickleball players. If you’ve been thinking about trying pickleball for the first time, or just want to get back into the swing of things, contact the tennis desk to be added to our weekly classes and events email list! See the class listings for specific options.
New Pickleball Events
In addition to our pickleball socials every Saturday at 4:00 p.m., we just hosted our ICC Inaugural Parent/Child
Pickleball Mixer on March 18th. Mixing age groups added to the fun and kept everyone on their toes. It was a wonderful time for families to mingle and get to know each other.
The ICC Spring Pickleball Battle was held the weekend of March 25th. This was our club’s first ever doubles pickleball tournament and featured a men’s doubles draw, a women’s doubles draw and a mixed doubles draw. We will feature our club champions in the next edition of this newsletter!
New Pickleball Machine
The club has purchased a pickleball ball machine! The pickleball machine rates are the same as our current tennis ball machine rates, $12 for a half-hour and $24 for an hour. We also offer a Ball Machine Club annual fee of $250/per individual or $300/family. Membership allows you to have unlimited use of the ball machine without a court fee.
Outdoor Courts Open Mid-Month
The four outdoor Har-Tru tennis courts will open as early in April as possible, based on the weather and contractor’s schedule. There is no charge for an outdoor court reservation and the year-round prices for indoor courts are $20 an hour. Guest fees still apply to outdoor courts. We also want to encourage members to use the backboard on the north side of court 7.

Thanks to you all for the wonderful turnout on the player and spectator sides!
