Membership News By Beatrice Santos-Araujo
Please give a warm ICC welcome to our New Members Nicholas and Moley Evans, Social Membership Moley and Nicholas have called Arlington home for nearly 25 years and feel incredibly lucky to have raised their family there. Nicholas grew up in West Newton, MA, attended college outside Philadelphia, and has lived in Virginia ever since, apart from two years of graduate school. He works in government relations, served on the board of Doorways for Women and Families for nearly 20 years, and enjoys following baseball, soccer, tennis, and college basketball. Moley grew up in Wilmington, DE, attended college in North Carolina, and moved to DC after graduation to teach at Beauvoir. After their children were born, she founded EverWonder Camps, providing camps and after-school programs to thousands of children in the DC area. She now serves as Director of Volunteer Engagement at CFP Board and serves on the board of After School Enrichment Matters. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, cooking, yoga, walks with friends, and volunteering. They have two wonderful children, Charlotte, a senior at the University of San Francisco, and Will, a Georgetown sophomore who plays football for the Hoyas, as well as two much-loved Goldendoodles, Oscar and Scout. They love traveling together as a family and especially enjoy gathering around the table for family meals whenever everyone is home. They’re excited to join ICC, meet new people, make friends, and become part of the community. Although their kids are now in college, they look forward to having them join whenever they’re home and enjoying ICC together as a family.
Eric and Lindsay Henson, Social Membership Eric and Lindsay Henson live in Arlington with their youngest son, Theo, a freshman at Yorktown High School. Their four older children – Casey, Kyle, Ryan, and Christopher – have grown and scattered a bit, with Casey working in Los Angeles, Kyle at Santa Clara University, Ryan at the University of Mary Washington, and Christopher at Indiana University. Professionally, Lindsay serves as a Managing Director at Eagle Hill Consulting and Eric leads Operations at Axle.

The Evans Family
Sports have been a big part of the Henson household. The family has spent lots of time on the baseball/ softball fields, with Kyle, Ryan, and Theo all avid baseball players, and Casey once a softball player. Christopher followed his mom’s athletic path as a soccer standout. Recently golf has become their newest shared passion – an activity that brings them back together whenever the family is in the same zip code. They look forward to joining the ICC community as a place to bring their family together and build new connections.
Gary Vaughan and Greer Lindholm, Social Membership Gary and Greer are a blended family with three children: Ryan (25), Evan (21), and Ella (14). Greer grew up in Oakton, while Gary is originally from Virginia Beach and has lived in Northern Virginia since 1995, apart from two years in Los Angeles. (continued on page 3)

From the Executive Chef By Paul Suplee, MBA, PC-3, CEC Weren’t we just taking day trips to the beach and lingering at dock bars? And yet, snow is already falling in parts of the country! With all the buzz about a Super El Niño, we’re all wondering whether this winter will be rainy or snow-laden. There’s only one way to find out, and that’s to wait. Short of that, we can only bow to the whims of Mother Nature. Utah has already received its first motherlode of that magical frozen dust. I know many people don’t look forward to this time of year, but I was raised in a family that relished the Great Blizzard of ‘76 (I was eight, and the fireplaces roared all week), and we raised our own kids to marvel as Snowmageddon buried the East Coast. I love a good snowfall, because it always melts away in the end. Let’s just hope it stays up in the mountains this winter and doesn’t disrupt life down here too much.
all raised on certain dishes that carry us back to our youth. There is real comfort in that. A word of caution, though. With visions of sugar plums dancing in our heads, I’m vowing to take it a little easy this year, so I won’t have to make a gym membership my mandatory New Year’s resolution. But I digress. I hope everyone enjoys the holidays with family, friends, and guests, and I look forward to seeing our Members at the Club this season.
With winter fast approaching, our thoughts turn to comfort food, and heartier fare is making its way onto menus: short ribs, root vegetables in every preparation, and more. Soups become a seasonal favorite, warming the soul and coaxing some circulation back into our hands and feet. Then there’s the hot beverage of your choosing, whether cocoa, coffee, tea, mulled cider, or a sturdy Hot Toddy. Each has its place as the temperature drops. I’ll confess that on brisk days I break my one-cup-of-coffee rule at a much later hour than I should, hoping for its warming reprieve. This is truly my favorite season for food and drink. From Halloween treats and parties for kids and grown-ups alike, to the ubiquitous Thanksgiving dinner, to a classic roasted rib with Yorkshire pudding on Christmas, we were

Members Encouraged to Consider Committee Service (Get Involved at International Country Club) During the year, many members have expressed interest in volunteering their time and talents by serving on International Country Club’s standing committees. As our membership continues to grow, we recognize that many newer members may be unsure how to become more involved in the club.
Please note, however, that due to committee size limitations, not all members who express an interest will necessarily be asked to serve. Our current standing committees include:
• Golf
• Racquets & Fitness
• Greens
• Membership
• Swim
• House & Social
• Finance
• Building, Facilities & Technology
To help facilitate committee participation in the coming years, we are developing a pool of interested members who may be considered as vacancies arise on our various committees. One of the Board’s goals is to broaden member participation and provide more opportunities for members to contribute their ideas, skills, and enthusiasm to the club.
If you are interested in serving on one or more of these committees, please complete the brief questionnaire on the back of this page. Your interest and willingness to contribute are greatly appreciated as we work to expand member involvement and strengthen our club community.
While continuity is important, a healthy balance of experienced leadership and fresh energy is essential to the continued growth and success of International Country Club.
A Reminder: The electronic Annual Meeting will take place November 9th–13th. We encourage all members to participate and stay informed about the important business and decisions affecting our club.
To support this goal, committee chairs will be encouraged to welcome new volunteers each year.
Thank you in advance for your interest, enthusiasm, and commitment to International Country Club!

GOLF From the Golf Shop By Tom Melideo We hope you’re all enjoying the wonderful fall golf season. This is a great time of year to take in the course and the beautiful foliage. We still have a couple of fun events planned for November. The “Turkey Shoot” will again be a three-club tournament, scheduled for Saturday, November 21st. Players can only use three clubs, and a Tom Melideo putter counts as one, so choose wisely! The entry fee is $25, and sign-up will be on the tee that day. The event is open to both men and women.
Golf Shop Sweeps The holidays are approaching, and we have some great new merchandise in the Golf Shop! We’re stocked with the latest styles from Peter Millar, Imperial Sweatshirts, Collars & Co., RLX, Holderness & Bourne, and Rhoback. Whether you’re shopping for yourself or looking for a gift, we have some great options.
November 2026
If you have accumulated Golf Shop sweeps from tournaments or trade-ins this year, remember that they must be used by the end of the year. Stop by the Golf Shop to check out our new merchandise, use your sweeps, and get some holiday shopping done. If we don’t have exactly what you’re looking for, we’d be happy to order something for you!
GHIN App We wanted to remind everyone that the GHIN app is a convenient way to post your scores if you’re away from the club. The app is available for both Android and Apple devices. All you need is your GHIN number to post scores. You can also view the latest issue of Virginia Golfer magazine and calculate your course handicap if you’re playing at an away course. Check it out – you won’t be disappointed!
Toughie Day December 5th On this day, our golf course superintendent, Nathaniel Guldseth, will set up the course with one goal in mind: make it hard. The event will be a Two-Man Scramble, with an entry fee of $25 per person. The tournament will be played (continued on page 8)

Golf Course Update By Nathaniel Guldseth, Golf Course Superintendent
Dear Member: Fall has arrived with some spectacular weather, but along with it comes the leaves! The maintenance staff has moved into a full leaf-removal phase which will continue well into December. This season we are once again placing small, batteryoperated blowers next to some of the greens during the day. The maintenance staff will blow leaves off all day long but these blowers are intended for you to clear your line during your round. The blowers are small so just clear what you need – we will take care of cleaning off the entire green. Each day we will put on the “Course Conditions” page of the website the greens at which the blowers will be. Keep in mind that the maintenance staff cannot hear you yell “fore” when they are operating blowers. Please do your best to get their attention before hitting into them. They will look up and see you eventually and if you give them some time there is a better chance you won’t lose your golf ball! Switching gears a bit – we are almost done with our fall seeding program. The weather was fantastic for germinating seed and we are very pleased with the catch we got in the rough. The barest spots have been, or will be, sodded with
14
turf-type tall fescue. You will also see us start the process of sodding the many spots of dead bermudagrass in our collars and bunker noses. This will be a regular process each fall but obviously the hope is that we reduce the bermudagrass population enough that it is not always this dramatic. We are also spot-seeding areas in the fairways that never quite recovered from the excessive moisture in the summer of 2025. While the fairways had a great year, we did have some thin spots that we really want to thicken up. As I mentioned in my email, fall is also now PoaCure time. We still have patches of the grassy weed poa annua on our greens and we are now able to treat the greens in the fall much more aggressively in an effort to really clean them up. If you have played recently, you might have noticed yellow patches here and there on the greens. This is most noticeable on the very fronts of three, five, and seven greens. The fronts of greens receive heavy amounts of foot traffic so those areas tend to have higher poa annua populations. The center of a few greens (4 and 17) have also turned fairly yellow as well. We are really excited to see the poa continue to fade away – it has had a direct impact on the quality of the greens. These areas will be seeded or plugged out completely with bentgrass. Take care and I hope to see you out on the course!

Retired Men’s Golf Team By Bob Levin The 2026 Northern Virginia Retired Men’s Golf Association season has come to an end. With a winning record of 12 wins, 9 losses, and 3 ties, we qualified for the playoffs. Our quarterfinal match in early October unfortunately ended in defeat. See below for details.
September 17th Our guys needed a clutch performance against Mt. Vernon to stay alive for the playoffs. Happily, we came through with solid play, winning 26 to 10. Almost half of our players shot net even par or better. Four pairs captured all 3 points: Larry Hines/Sanjay Nagdev, Bob Byers/Bob Ferretti, Tim Danehower/Doug Counts, and Bob Waters/Mike Kurle. Three pairs took 2.5 points: Scott Glaus/Paul Pantano, Dan Harris/Neal McMichael, and Kye Lee/Steve Powers. Two-point winners included Greg Krisanda/Steve Lucas and Norm Taylor/Mark Larsen. In the Sweeps, Greg Krisanda/Steve Lucas shot a net 63 to win 1st place. Scott Dratch/George Sill also shot a net 63 but took second after a scorecard playoff. Tim Danehower/Doug Counts finished in 3rd place. The Co-Stars of the Week, at net 4 under par, were Doug Counts and Steve Lucas. Todd Groome and Steve Powers shot net 3 under; George Sill, Mike Kurle, and Bruce Almquist shot net 2 under; and Bob Zulandi, Paul Pantano, and Greg Krisanda finished at net 1 under. Shooting a net even par score were Kye Lee and Tom Haselhorst. Low gross rounds were recorded by Larry Hines (77), Greg Krisanda (77), and Todd Groome (80).
Bob Waters; Steve Clinton/Tom Heffernan finished 4th. This week, 4 players shot net even par or better. Rick Mendelsohn, as an alternate, was Star of the Week with an excellent net 5 under score. Norm Taylor finished at net 3 under. Paul Pantano and Thong Nguyen turned in net even par scores. The low gross scores were recorded by Scott Glaus (79) and Larry Hines (80).
October 8th Playoff In the playoff quarterfinal, Army-Navy Arlington defeated us 22.5 to 13.5. We had 6 pairs competing at their course and 6 at ours. We did reasonably well at home but were soundly defeated away. Four of our duos took 2.5 of the 3.0 points. They were Scott Glaus/Tim Danehower, Jim Stryker/Bob Byers, Bob Waters/ Tom Heffernan, and Kye Lee/Tom Hammel. None of our other pairs finished with a majority of points. The Star of the Week with a net 6 under par was Bob Byers. Kye Lee shot net 3 under, Dave Laufer finished at net 2 under; Jim Stryker, Doug Counts, Steve Lucas, and Tom Heffernan recorded net 1 under scores. Tom Haselhorst and Tom Hammel finished at net even par. Bob Byers (79), Kye Lee (79), and Jim Stryker (80) were our low gross players.
One final note: it was gratifying to see the influx of many new Retired Men’s team players. Their camaraderie and good play were key to our success and enjoyment this year.
September 24th In the final regular season match, ICC defeated Westwood by a score of 22.5 to 13.5. As a result, our team qualified for the playoffs. Every one of our 12 pairs secured a half point or more. We had three pairs capturing all 3 points: Steve Clinton/Tom Heffernan (stalwarts, as usual), Gary Avakian/Tom Haselhorst, and Bob Zulandi/Dave Laufer. Leading the way with 2.5 points were the duos of Scott Glaus/Bob Waters and Tim Danehower/George Sill. Winning 2 points were Bob Byers/ Norm Taylor and Kye Lee/Tom Bishop. In the Sweeps, 2nd place was won by Bob Byers/Norm Taylor with a net 65 score. Coming in 3rd place were Scott Glaus/

ICC WGA Women Giving Back Charity Event ICC Ladies Charity Golf Event The annual ICC Ladies Charity Golf event benefiting Women Giving Back, a local nonprofit supporting women and children in crisis, was held on Tuesday, September 22nd at ICC. The rain did not hold off this year, and the golf course was closed for the day. That did not, however, deter 60 ladies (ICC members and their guests) from enjoying a wonderful luncheon put on by ICC’s Catering department. The whole event, which included the Hit the Green Challenge, September 11th–13th, was a huge success! Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the ICC community, the ladies raised $50,000+ for this organization that does so much good for those in need in our area. Special thanks go to Bette Rutherford and Shannon Tully (Co-Chairs), Sue Martin (Hit the Green Chair) and Sally Nadanyi (Event Treasurer) for leading this effort and to all who supported it in many other ways. ICC Lady Niners By Clare Kersten As our 2026 Season winds down, ICC Lady Niners are making the most of this amazing, if unpredictable, shoulder season, enjoying friends and rounds on our beautiful course. Our thanks go out to everyone in the Pro Shop, the Bag Room crew, the Grounds team, and the Clubhouse staff for a wonderful year of consistent support. We would not be here without you! It was another wonderful year for our many Niners who participated in the MVMTA League play around the region. Men’s & Women’s Fall Singles Ladders Begin in November The fall singles ladder for men and women will run for five weeks, beginning November 2nd and finishing on Sunday, December 13th (excluding the week of Thanksgiving). Let us know by Thursday, October 22nd if you are interested in playing! The ladder is a great chance to create new friendships and tennis rivals, improve your skills, and have fun. In the ladder format, players will be ranked relative to their level of play. Each week, players will be assigned a match with the chance to play the person above them if they have won the previous week or the chance to play the person below if they have lost the previous week. Matches will be sent out every Monday morning by the Tennis Shop. Sign up for: WOMEN’S SINGLES LADDER

placement before beginning your service motion or assuming your return stance.
Key Takeaway: You cannot control the point that just happened, but you control your posture and focus before the next one starts. Win the 16 seconds between points, and the match will follow.
Tennis Tip of the Month:
ADULT RACQUETS SCHEDULE
Tennis is unique because players spend roughly 80% of match time between points, giving your internal critic ample opportunity to hijack your focus. When a player misses an easy forehand, frustration usually causes your body language to drop, leading to rushed serves and snowballing errors.
Adult Tennis Flights
To break this loop, adopt the 16-Second Between-Point Routine used by top pros to maintain a positive, focused mindset:
1. The Physical Release (Seconds 0–4): Immediately turn your back to the net after the point ends. Fix your strings, adjust your grip, or take a deep belly breath. The visual separation acts as a physical barrier between the past point and your mind. 2. The Neutral Self-Talk (Seconds 5–10): Replace selfcriticism (“How did I dump that in the net?”) with task-oriented statements (“Move your feet earlier next time” or “Trust the swing”). Treat yourself like a supportive teammate, not an executioner. 3. The Preparation (Seconds 11–16): Turn back to face the court with high posture (head up, shoulders back). Commit completely to a target and ball

🍂 The First Thanksgiving 🍁
Massasoit then challenged the Pilgrims to a friendly bench press competition. No one knows who won this epic contest but one thing is certain: every man, woman, and child hit a new personal record that day.
There have been many myths about what happened at the First Thanksgiving but ICC Fitness Pro Danny is here to clear the air once and for all. In 1621, the Pilgrims were desperately low on creatine and whey protein powder. They were losing all their gains! Fortunately, the local Wampanoag Tribe had developed a system to cultivate these essential resources. The Pilgrims happily exchanged squat racks and dumbells for this vital information. The next harvest season was a success! The Pilgrims would be double scooping their supplements for years to come. One night, the Wampanoag heard the Pilgrims slamming weights and quickly rushed to check if anyone needed a spotter. They were relieved to find the Pilgrims boisterously deadlifting incredible loads.
