The Core - periphery theory explains the regional system that a region changes from unconnected to connected and balanced development. This portfolio focuses more on "periphery" and "Marginalization", and tries to learn the changes and influencing factors of the boundary between the core and periphery areas.
There are two kinds of “periphery”, one is the place that is objectively and geographically on the edge of the city, and the other is the place that is subjectively ignored by human society and the “periphery”.
The first research focuses on Dharavi, the biggest slum in Mumbai. It is located in the centre of Mumbai, but it is hard to say Dharavi is the core of Mumbai. She is within and without the core.
The second research focuses on a Fragile area of Milan - San Siro. many foreign immigrants which is a marginalised population live here. We wanted to come up with a social housing renovation that would improve the lives in San Siro and respond to their ideas with the principle of the commons.
The third project focus on the process of completing a school project in a real-life environment, including budget, materials, structure, sustainability, feasibility, etc. The focus is on a shading system that we designed for the LODI school.
The last research focuses on the elderly. Conceptually, they were treated as Marginalized people because of unemployment and some other reasons. This project discusses why they were marginalized, and tries to Remove the “boundary” .

WITHIN AND WITHOUT THE CORE AS FAR AS THE EYE
Academic, Individual Work 2020 summer, 10 weeks MUMBAI , INDIA
The project is trying in a less intense but ubiquitous way to improve their lives on the basis of the caste based ecology of Dharavi. As far as the eyes, all aspects of life are changing. The maratha still sell spices, the Tamils still manufacture leather, with more sophisticated tools and new techniques. Let's change Dharavi from the bottom to up in the every corner of life.

A SOCIAL HOUSING RENOVATION
CURRENT SITUATION ANALYSIS
Site Environment
The district was placed in a completely different context from the current one, it was a few steps away from the open coun- tryside and in a short time it was incorporated by the rest of the city in a suburb not far from the center. The problem is that from the 40s to today, almost no mainte- nance interventions have ever been made and today we can notice how the façades of the buildings seem to be crumbling: plaster falling from the walls, cracks, windows without glass.
Degradation of San Siro
Today, San Siro is surrounded by a very dense building fabric and a well-to-do population, and is well connected to the rest of the city by two underground lines, the red one and the vio- let one that reach every point of Milan.
However, it is always considered impenetrable and the differ- ences between inside and outside become more acute and is considered one of the most problematic neighbourhoods of the city. There are degraded public spaces, empty commercial spaces, lack of services, poor management of housing; all those elements have increased the situation of physical degradation of San Siro.
Fragile Population
Keywords: small family, low income, narrow flat,Most people live in rented flat.
We need some facilities for specific people:elevator,Service Center...
Needs from local people
1 there are no shops and activities
2 disabled people need an elevator at the apartment
3 the apartment are too narrow for a four people family
4 Someone illegal occupied the basements and sleep there at night
5 most apartments need to be renovated
6 it seems impossible to have a relationship with neighbourhood
12
PortFolio | Shen Xinlong
The stores along street need a communication with crowd.
Areas between buildings could develop into gathering and playing.
Seperation among central area , a gathering place is needed.
The corridors could extend from the apartment to connect.

STRUCTURAL SYSTEM
The project is composed of three storeys, where the second floor only covers the north area of the building. The design of the building was from the beginning an integration between the architectural and structural aspects.
From the first approaches we considered the grid of pillars and the structure of the building which we decided to be mainly in reinforced concrete, with hollow brick slabs, according to the typical way of building in the region. The grid spans go up to 7 x 4 meters maximum and give shape to the spaces and the functions of the school.
The reinforced concrete structure is paired in specific areas with a steel structure, chosen for its different properties. Also, the gym, which consists of a different system separated from the main building, is supported by a steel structure.
The building can be divided into 3 main areas, the north, the south and the east one. The north area (which mainly contains the classrooms and is particularly long) is divided into 3 blocks, separated by steel structures that define the glazed common areas. The south area follows the same concept and contains one glazed strip too, whose structure is steel. The east part is entirely made of reinforced concrete.
The south and east-oriented facades are paired with different types of self-supporting shading systems according to the orientation.
We designed the structure of the school taking into consideration the need for structural joints, that in this case are 4, the presence of structural cores where elevators and U-shaped stairs were placed, and the need for shear walls to strengthen the partitions against bi-directional horizontal forces and equilibrate the stiffness of the cores.

Aging of population.Suzhou's urban planning policy keeps its unique and traditional traces of time, it also creates the regional characteristics of the concentration of the elderly population. If the life of the elderly can be integrated into new development opportunities and vitality, what kind of scene will appear? This project gives the answer.

SPONTANEOUS TIME-SHARING SYSTEM
The living pattern of the elderly in urban areas is also quite different from that of the mainstream population. Senior citizens get up earlier and sleep earlier, and their activity peaks in the morning and afternoon. The young people mainly work in the daytime. The industrial park is used by young people from 8 o'clock in the day to 6 p.m., but they usually stay indoors. On workdays, the rest part of the park is not fully used. Maybe we can let the elderly make use of the park to build a spontaneous time-sharing system.

The first step is to attract the surrounding residents / employees here and start using the building. So it will be transformed into an indoor garden growing in an old factory. Our cities are already crowded enough. Therefore, we try to reduce the number of new buildings but connect the northern museum area, which was originally disconnected by the railway tracks, with the southern green area, so that the green public space invades the urban space. At the same time, it provides new public space for the whole city and connects the green areas in the north and south of the city to form a complete public green area.

TOWER PLANS
PortFolio | Shen Xinlong refers to the complex, dynamic and very plastic social around the street, it is a relationship in formation that takes area between private and public space.
transitional character, the street commons open up to spaces on either side, people’s identities are transformed in creating intermediate crossover areas that clearly symsharing. They gather together, redefine themselves as a experience the potential for change. When ‘newcomers’ need not forced into pre-existing role categories but can according to their habits, needs and abilities. Any form or explicit act of collective self-regulation and self-mamaintaining a resilient and temporal relationship.
these street commons are being and have been taken by example being the urban villages of Shenzhen, China. It is diversity and life. This project opens up the boundaries by were previously occupied by walls and unauthorized builspaces. Within the homogeneous and densely packed the village, this transitional space becomes a most communication with its potential complexity and porosity.
TRANSITION
Most urban spaces tend to have clear rules and boundaries, and the boundaries between them, due to their spatial porosity, their functional temporality and the complexity of their subjects, have the potential to generate dynamic and very plastic social relations, that is, a kind of common, which we can call ‘transition’.
The most original and common transitional space is the street side, which separates two different properties of space, private residential space and public transport space, always open to both sides. Here the subject of use is indeterminate, but any activity is the result of self-regulation, and the street itself becomes the result of people living there and making the space liveable. In this process people’s identities are transformed and the potential for change is experienced, giving people the opportunity to share in an emerging common world.
These street commons are disappearing due to urbanization and are being replaced by fast and convenient roads. The case is located in an urban village in Shenzhen, China, which is cluttered but full of diversity and life. By restoring the space originally occupied by walls and illegal buildings into a street activity space, opening up the boundaries, and making them accessible, this transitional space becomes the most precious space for communication with its potential complexity and porosity.
