The National Benefit Fund believes it is a “grandfathered health plan” under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which means that this plan can preserve certain basic health coverage that was already in effect when that law was enacted, and may not include certain new consumer protections that apply to other plans. However, grandfathered health plans must comply with certain other consumer protections in the Act, for example, the elimination of lifetime limits on benefits. Obesity and diabetes are two of the greatest healthcare challenges facing us today, according to recent studies. The Centers for Disease Control found that by 2030 as many as 42 percent of people living in the United States could be classified as obese, and that 8 percent of the population has been diagnosed with diabetes. For 1199ers, the news is even more serious. Fourteen percent of our members have been diagnosed with diabetes – nearly twice the national average.That is why it is so important to take advantage of your Fund’s wellness programs – from health fairs to the 1199SEIU Health Coaching Service – to access the tools you need to get healthy and stay healthy.

In this issue of For Your Benefit, we provide you with information on the best ways to prevent Type 2 diabetes or manage the condition if you have been diagnosed. As we know all too well, complications of diabetes and obesity can harm our health and affect our quality of life. But we show you how a healthy diet, exercise and regular check-ups can help keep you on the right track.

You will also read about Joanne Toss, a Medical Transcriptionist at St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers, who struggled with her weight for years before finally getting it under control and turning her life around. We hope you will be inspired by her success, which she credits to her benefits and the culture of health at her institution as well as her own determination.

Joanne Toss

Eating Right, Exercising and Support Lead to Lasting Changes After losing more than 100 pounds, Joanne Toss has a new outlook on life

For as long as she can remember, Joanne Toss has struggled with her weight, but about two years ago she hit bottom and knew she had to make some healthy changes. The pain in her knees was unbearable. She had trouble walking even short distances and was nearing the point where she’d be unable to climb the stairs. Even sitting in certain chairs was painful. She was diagnosed with bilateral osteoarthritis, and three different doctors gave her the same warning – “If you don’t lose weight, the pain will get worse and your quality of life will get worse along with it.”

Joanne, who is a Medical Transcriptionist at St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers, weighed about 300 pounds at the time. She felt as if she’d tried everything, yet every time she lost weight, she would regain it. Since that low point in the fall of 2010, however, Joanne has dropped 115 pounds, and not only has her health improved, her life has become richer in many ways. “My energy level and my attitude are much better,” she said. “And my confidence soars now.”

Getting to that point, though, was a challenge.

Riding the highs and lows of her weight-loss struggle, Joanne didn’t give up.“Being an 1199SEIU member and working in the healthcare industry are constant reminders of how important health and wellness are – whether it’s our worksite wellness programs, health fairs, healthy food choices in the cafeteria or that we’re a smoke-free institution,” she said. “I kept looking for what I could do.”

She continued to follow up with her primary care doctor for the arthritis in her knees and, in time, got up the nerve to join Overeaters Anonymous, a program geared toward helping people who chronically overeat.The support of people who share the same struggles and celebrate each other’s successes, combined with her commitment to change, finally set Joanne on a new path. As she began to lose weight, her knees improved and the back and foot problems that were just starting to develop disappeared.

None of this would be possible, Joanne stressed, without the changes she’s made in her diet and exercise routines. Her fitness routine, she admits, is still a work in progress, but walking regularly on a track near her home in Mt. Vernon and riding a stationary bike when the weather is bad have made a big difference in her life.

Of course, as for many of us, keeping up her new healthy lifestyle hasn’t always been easy, she said, but the rewards of sticking with it have been powerful motivators. She has been able to cut way back on the anti-inflammatory medications she was taking, has more energy throughout the day and has even been told by her husband, James, and her friends that she smiles more often. To top it off, she and James have resumed one of their favorite activities: “We love to go out and sing karaoke, but I was always so self-conscious,” Joanne said. “Now I’m fearless!”

Preventing and Managing Type 2 Diabetes

“You have diabetes” are three words no one wants to hear, but there are ways to start getting healthier right away.

Nearly 26 million people in the United States have diabetes – that’s 8 percent of the population.

But for 1199ers, the diabetes rate is more than 14 percent. And many more of us don’t even know we have it. The good news? There’s a lot you can do to prevent diabetes – or manage your condition if you’ve been diagnosed.

With Type 2 diabetes – the most common form of the disease – your body can’t use insulin properly to regulate your blood glucose level.

And high blood glucose, or blood sugar, is a dangerous condition that, over time, can damage your heart, kidneys, eyes, blood vessels and other organs, and put you at greater risk for heart attack and stroke.

Risk factors include being obese, sedentary, having high blood pressure, and low HDL cholesterol or high triglycerides, along with family history, age and ethnicity.

But Type 2 diabetes isn’t inevitable, and you can fight back. The best ways to lower your risk are by maintaining a healthy weight, eating right and exercising. In fact, researchers at the Diabetes Prevention Program found that eating a reduced-fat, lower-calorie diet and increasing physical activity lowered the risk of Type 2 diabetes in high-risk adults by almost 60 percent.

5. Una ensalada para la hora del almuerzo es una opción excelente. ¿Cuál es un agregado saludable que le puede poner encima?

If you do have diabetes, here’s what you need to do to take charge of your condition and stay healthy: Test your blood sugar and take your medicine.

Taking your insulin or other prescribed medication is essential to controlling diabetes, and so is regularly checking your blood sugar.You should also have periodic hemoglobin A1c tests to measure your average blood sugar over time.

This will tell you if your diabetes is under control.

Are You at Risk?

If you’re experiencing the following symptoms, get checked out right away to find out whether you have or are at risk for diabetes – and get the help you need to manage your condition. See your doctor if you: •

Eat healthy. A balanced diet with whole grains, lean meats, fish and vegetables will help you control your blood sugar. Replace sugary snacks and fried, salty food with healthier options.When you cook, steam or grill veggies and lean meats to get the most nutrients while cutting back on fat, calories and sodium.

Keep moving. Besides helping you lose weight, 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day can help keep your blood sugar levels in check, improve your blood pressure and cholesterol, and reduce your risk for heart disease and other diabetes complications.Take a walk on your lunch break and choose activities you enjoy – so you’re more likely to stick with them. Protect your feet. Diabetes damages the blood vessels and nerve endings in your feet, so you may not always notice an injury. Check your feet daily for skin changes, swelling and pain, and have a complete sensory foot exam once a year. If you have a cut that won’t heal, see your doctor.

Prevención y Manejo de la Diabetes Tipo 2 “Usted tiene diabetes” son tres palabras que nadie quiere escuchar, pero hay formas de comenzar a recuperar su salud de inmediato.

Aproximadamente 26 millones de personas en los Estados Unidos tienen diabetes, lo que equivale al 8 por ciento de la población. Desde que tiene memoria, Joanne Toss ha luchado contra su peso, pero hace como dos años tocó fondo y supo que tenía que hacer algunos cambios saludables.

Prevención y Manejo de la Diabetes Tipo 2 “Usted tiene diabetes” son tres palabras que nadie quiere escuchar, pero hay formas de comenzar a recuperar su salud de inmediato.

If you do have diabetes, here’s what you need to do to take charge of your condition and stay healthy: Test your blood sugar and take your medicine.

Taking your insulin or other prescribed medication is essential to controlling diabetes, and so is regularly checking your blood sugar.You should also have periodic hemoglobin A1c tests to measure your average blood sugar over time.

This will tell you if your diabetes is under control.

Are You at Risk?

If you’re experiencing the following symptoms, get checked out right away to find out whether you have or are at risk for diabetes – and get the help you need to manage your condition. See your doctor if you: •

Are often tired, thirsty or hungry

Are urinating frequently

•

Have unexplained weight loss

•

Experience sudden vision changes, or tingling or numbness in your hands or feet

•

Have sores that heal slowly or more infections than usual

Eat healthy. A balanced diet with whole grains, lean meats, fish and vegetables will help you control your blood sugar. Replace sugary snacks and fried, salty food with healthier options.When you cook, steam or grill veggies and lean meats to get the most nutrients while cutting back on fat, calories and sodium.

Keep moving. Besides helping you lose weight, 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day can help keep your blood sugar levels in check, improve your blood pressure and cholesterol, and reduce your risk for heart disease and other diabetes complications.Take a walk on your lunch break and choose activities you enjoy – so you’re more likely to stick with them. Just be sure to talk with your doctor before starting any exercise routine.

Protect your feet. Diabetes damages the blood vessels and nerve endings in your feet, so you may not always notice an injury. Check your feet daily for skin changes, swelling and pain, and have a complete sensory foot exam once a year. If you have a cut that won’t heal, see your doctor.

“You have diabetes” are three words no one wants to hear, but there are ways to start getting healthier right away.

Nearly 26 million people in the United States have diabetes – that’s 8 percent of the population.

But for 1199ers, the diabetes rate is more than 14 percent. And many more of us don’t even know we have it. The good news? There’s a lot you can do to prevent diabetes – or manage your condition if you’ve been diagnosed.

With Type 2 diabetes – the most common form of the disease – your body can’t use insulin properly to regulate your blood glucose level.

And high blood glucose, or blood sugar, is a dangerous condition that, over time, can damage your heart, kidneys, eyes, blood vessels and other organs, and put you at greater risk for heart attack and stroke.

Risk factors include being obese, sedentary, having high blood pressure, and low HDL cholesterol or high triglycerides, along with family history, age and ethnicity.

But Type 2 diabetes isn’t inevitable, and you can fight back. The best ways to lower your risk are by maintaining a healthy weight, eating right and exercising. In fact, researchers at the Diabetes Prevention Program found that eating a reduced-fat, lower-calorie diet and increasing physical activity lowered the risk of Type 2 diabetes in high-risk adults by almost 60 percent.

Joanne Toss

Eating Right, Exercising and Support Lead to Lasting Changes After losing more than 100 pounds, Joanne Toss has a new outlook on life

For as long as she can remember, Joanne Toss has struggled with her weight, but about two years ago she hit bottom and knew she had to make some healthy changes. The pain in her knees was unbearable. She had trouble walking even short distances and was nearing the point where she’d be unable to climb the stairs. Even sitting in certain chairs was painful. She was diagnosed with bilateral osteoarthritis, and three different doctors gave her the same warning – “If you don’t lose weight, the pain will get worse and your quality of life will get worse along with it.”

Joanne, who is a Medical Transcriptionist at St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers, weighed about 300 pounds at the time. She felt as if she’d tried everything, yet every time she lost weight, she would regain it. Since that low point in the fall of 2010, however, Joanne has dropped 115 pounds, and not only has her health improved, her life has become richer in many ways. “My energy level and my attitude are much better,” she said. “And my confidence soars now.”

Getting to that point, though, was a challenge.

Riding the highs and lows of her weight-loss struggle, Joanne didn’t give up.“Being an 1199SEIU member and working in the healthcare industry are constant reminders of how important health and wellness are – whether it’s our worksite wellness programs, health fairs, healthy food choices in the cafeteria or that we’re a smoke-free institution,” she said. “I kept looking for what I could do.”

She continued to follow up with her primary care doctor for the arthritis in her knees and, in time, got up the nerve to join Overeaters Anonymous, a program geared toward helping people who chronically overeat.The support of people who share the same struggles and celebrate each other’s successes, combined with her commitment to change, finally set Joanne on a new path. As she began to lose weight, her knees improved and the back and foot problems that were just starting to develop disappeared.

Of course, as for many of us, keeping up her new healthy lifestyle hasn’t always been easy, she said, but the rewards of sticking with it have been powerful motivators. She has been able to cut way back on the anti-inflammatory medications she was taking, has more energy throughout the day and has even been told by her husband, James, and her friends that she smiles more often. To top it off, she and James have resumed one of their favorite activities: “We love to go out and sing karaoke, but I was always so self-conscious,” Joanne said. “Now I’m fearless!”

Obesity and diabetes are two of the greatest healthcare challenges facing us today, according to recent studies. The Centers for Disease Control found that by 2030 as many as 42 percent of people living in the United States could be classified as obese, and that 8 percent of the population has been diagnosed with diabetes.
