The Fund believes the Eligibility Class III plan is a “grandfathered health plan� under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (the Affordable Care Act). As permitted by the Affordable Care Act, a grandfathered health plan can preserve certain basic health coverage that was already in effect when that law was enacted. Being a grandfathered health plan means that this plan may not include certain consumer protections of the Affordable Care Act that apply to other plans, for example, the requirement for an external review process for claims appeals. However, grandfathered health plans must comply with certain other consumer protections in the Affordable Care Act, for example, the elimination of lifetime limits on benefits. In this issue you will read about one member – Mary Crosson, a Certified Nursing Assistant at Sands Point Center for Health and Rehabilitation – who changed the way she ate and started exercising to lower her blood pressure and cholesterol and lose 30 pounds. She admits that it was a struggle at times, but she says her new healthy lifestyle has helped make her feel years younger.

Noticias Saludables Que Puede Utilizar

Comer de Manera Más Saludable Puede Reducir su Riesgo de Desarrollar Diabetes de Tipo 2 Según un estudio reciente de los investigadores de Harvard School of Public Health (Facultad de Salud Pública de Harvard), usted puede reducir su riesgo de desarrollar diabetes de tipo 2 con una mejor dieta.

DON’T GET SIDELINED BY THE FLU – Perder Peso, a Cualquier Edad, Puede Mejorar la Salud de su Corazón Un estudio reciente en The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology sugiere que nunca es tarde para perder peso y proteger su corazón. Get Vaccinated Early When it comes to getting vaccinated for the flu, the sooner, the better! Flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May, so it’s best to get vaccinated yearly to protect yourself, your family and your patients or residents from the potentially serious virus. Here are just a few of the benefits of early vaccination:

You’ll save yourself a trip to the doctor.

Each year, the flu vaccine is designed to protect against the viruses most likely to cause illness in the coming season. But it can take your body about two weeks after vaccination to build up antibodies to protect you against influenza viruses. So early vaccination gives your body time to build its best defense against the flu.

Studies show that the flu vaccine reduces the risk of doctor visits due to flu by about 60 percent. While a vaccine can’t guarantee that you won’t get the flu, you are less likely to – and may have a milder case if you do – than those who don’t get the vaccine.

You’ll protect everyone around you.

Not only does the vaccine offer you the best protection against the potentially deadly consequences of the flu, it protects everyone around you – like your family, your coworkers and your patients or residents, especially the elderly.

It’s a powerful preventive tool.

If you have a chronic health condition like heart disease, diabetes or chronic lung disease, getting vaccinated reduces your likelihood of being hospitalized. The vaccine also helps protect pregnant women and their babies for up to six months after birth from being hospitalized.

Mary Crosson

Losing 30 pounds was just the beginning – keeping the weight off with healthy lifestyle changes has made Mary Crosson feel like a new person.

As she thinks back on taking those first tough steps toward a healthier life, Mary Crosson can’t believe how many times she had the plan all mapped out in her head – eat a nutritious diet, exercise regularly and get proper rest – but didn’t take action. Instead, it took a serious warning from her primary care doctor three years ago for her to finally get moving, said Mary, a Certified Nursing Assistant at Sands Point Center for Health and Rehabilitation. “My doctor told me that both my blood pressure and cholesterol were high and if I didn’t lose weight, I was at risk for a heart attack, stroke or kidney disease,� she said.

There had been plenty of warning signs, Mary admitted, particularly as she approached 60. She often felt light-headed after walking up a short flight of stairs and had been getting chronic headaches. But her doctor did give her some good news: “She said if I changed how I was living, my body was still capable of recovering and would return me to good health, probably without medication,� Mary said. “My doctor helped me sketch out an exercise program and gave me information about eating healthy. She said if I tried that for a month, I might be surprised at the results.�

Sure enough, soon after she began walking three mornings a week near her home in Hempstead, New York, and sticking to a healthy diet, she had fewer headaches and her energy level soared. Her daughter Deborah joined her for many of those early morning walks to lend support, Mary said, and they both gained more strength and stamina with each outing. “Once I started walking, I’ve never stopped,� she said. “I still walk three mornings a week, and I also walk on my lunch break and do floor exercises at home to strengthen my lower back and core muscles.�

Of course, in order to reach her goal of losing 30 pounds and getting her blood pressure and cholesterol under control, she also needed to change her diet. She took her doctor’s advice and began eating salads with

low-fat dressing for lunch and snacking on carrot sticks and fresh fruits during the workday, but cutting out fried foods and desserts was tough. So rather than try to completely eliminate the fried chicken and fish she liked so much, Mary started using some of the same tips she’d give residents at Sands Point who needed to improve their nutrition. “I treated myself to one fried food and one dessert a week for a while,� she said “But now it’s more like once a month.� Chicken or fish are still regular dinner staples at home, but now they’re grilled or baked instead of fried, she said, and they’re always served with a side of vegetables, a salad or brown rice.

In a year’s time, by mid-2012, Mary reached her weight-loss goal: she weighed 149 pounds, down from 182, and felt like a new person. Just as important, changing her habits slowly and deliberately, with the help of her primary care physician, has allowed her to maintain the weight loss, and her blood pressure and cholesterol levels are back to normal. “So much has changed for the better by keeping up with good habits,� she said. “I used to feel tired all the time, but now I’m energized and even at age 63, I feel like I’m 30 all over again!�

It’s a troubling statistic: healthcare workers suffer on-the-job injuries more often than workers in any other field.

In 2010, healthcare employers reported nearly 654,000 workplace injuries and illnesses, and Bureau of Labor Statistics data show that nursing aides, transporters and attendants have the highest rates of injuries affecting their bones, joints and muscles compared to all other workers.

Whether or not you’ve been injured at work, you need to know what you can do to protect your back.

Answer: B and C. Sleeping on your side or your back is better for your back than sleeping on your stomach, and supporting your knees with a pillow helps take stress off your back muscles.

Answer: D. For most people, back pain resolves itself.

Making healthy lifestyle changes – like exercising regularly and improving posture – helps the pain go away in most cases. Surgery is usually a last-choice option for when these treatments don’t bring relief. Of course, if your back pain is the result of a fall or other injury, is accompanied by abdominal pain or fever, or causes bowel or bladder problems, you should see your doctor right away.

Kick the Habit with These Tips If you find yourself going to the kitchen for a snack even though you’re not hungry or eating more when you’re feeling stressed, sad or just plain bored, you might be an emotional eater. All of us eat in response to our moods sometimes, but if you find yourself consistently making poor food choices when you’re feeling stressed, depressed or anxious, it’s time to break that unhealthy habit. Here are a few tips to get you started.

1. Track it To identify the pattern of when, where and why you eat in response to how you feel, it’s helpful to keep a food journal for one week (use your 1199SEIU Benefit Fund Food & Fitness Journal, which you can pick up from your Outreach Coordinator or by attending one of our Wellness Department’s health fairs). Do you eat more after work when you’re tired from the stress of the day or at night when you’re bored?

Recognizing which situations may be causing you to overeat is the first step to creating strategies that can help you change the behavior. Also, ask yourself what types of foods you’re most likely to eat during these times, so you can replace high-fat, high-calorie foods with healthier choices.

2. Find low-calorie substitutes Once you’ve identified which foods you typically grab, you can start trading high-calorie, low-nutrient foods for healthy alternatives. If you typically eat fried foods or snacks like chips, try substituting other crunchy foods like air-popped popcorn and veggies with a low-calorie dip like hummus. Prefer sweet, creamy foods like ice cream and peanut butter? Pair the peanut butter with crunchy apple slices, or try fat-free yogurt with fresh fruit.

3. Nip stress in the bud The American Psychological Association reports that 38 percent of adults say they have overeaten or eaten unhealthy foods in the past month because of stress – and almost half of these adults did so weekly or more. 4. Connect with others If you’re eating because you’re bored or lonely, it may help to connect, or reconnect, with family and friends. Working with others for a common cause – and getting away from food triggers around the house – can improve your mood and make it less likely that you’ll turn to food to cope with your feelings.

Talk to Friends and Family: If you feel that telling a loved one what’s troubling you is a “burden,” you may be surprised by how willing people are to help – and how sharing your feelings can help you feel better. Get Moving: Physical activity is a natural mood lifter that can relax your muscles and make it easier for you to fall asleep at night. Though you should aim to exercise at least three times a week for 30 minutes, even a 10-minute walk during your lunch break could give you the boost you need.

Eat Healthy Foods: To feel your best, your body needs to get enough vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. You can reduce your risk for Type 2 diabetes by eating a better diet, according to a recent study by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health. The study found that people who ate more whole grains, fruits and vegetables – and less sugar – reduced their risk for the disease. Those who ate healthier and lost weight or increased their exercise levels reduced their risk even more. Start with small changes, like drinking water instead of soda, or having fruit with plain yogurt instead of ice cream.

Sit Less and Exercise to Protect Your Heart Exercise is not enough to keep your heart in good shape if you spend most of the day sitting, a Mayo Clinic study shows. Researchers found that two hours of sitting could be just as bad for your heart as 20 minutes of exercise is good for your heart.

But the study also showed that any movement to break up long periods of sitting could improve heart health. So try walking during your lunch break, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or both!

Quitting Smoking Can Keep Your Children from Lighting Up Quitting smoking is tough, but if you do, you could help your children live longer, healthier lives, according to a Georgetown University study.

Researchers found that teen children of heavy smokers are more likely to try cigarettes and become heavy smokers themselves.They also found that the more years children are exposed to their parents smoking, the greater the chance that they will experiment with smoking or pick up the habit themselves. You can reduce your risk for Type 2 diabetes by eating a better diet, according to a recent study by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health. The study found that people who ate more whole grains, fruits and vegetables – and less sugar – reduced their risk for the disease. Those who ate healthier and lost weight or increased their exercise levels reduced their risk even more. Start with small changes, like drinking water instead of soda, or having fruit with plain yogurt instead of ice cream.

Sit Less and Exercise to Protect Your Heart Exercise is not enough to keep your heart in good shape if you spend most of the day sitting, a Mayo Clinic study shows. Researchers found that two hours of sitting could be just as bad for your heart as 20 minutes of exercise is good for your heart.

But the study also showed that any movement to break up long periods of sitting could improve heart health. So try walking during your lunch break, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or both!

Quitting Smoking Can Keep Your Children from Lighting Up Quitting smoking is tough, but if you do, you could help your children live longer, healthier lives, according to a Georgetown University study.

Researchers found that teen children of heavy smokers are more likely to try cigarettes and become heavy smokers themselves.They also found that the more years children are exposed to their parents smoking, the greater the chance that they will experiment with smoking or pick up the habit themselves. Researchers studied more than 1,000 men and women who were over 60 years old, and found that those who lost weight at any age reduced their risk for developing heart problems. They also found that the longer people were overweight or obese, the greater their chances were of having heart problems. So whether you’re 25 or 55, it’s the perfect time to begin – or step up – your fall fitness routine. It can help you shed pounds and add years to your life. How Stress Affects Kids Stress isn’t just an “adult” problem. Kids can also feel overwhelmed, depressed or tired because of stress – especially teenagers. In fact, a recent survey by the American Psychological Association found that 13- to 17-year olds reported stress levels similar to those of adults, and nearly one-third of them said they weren’t sure they were doing enough to manage their stress.

So even though you can’t protect children from all stressful situations, you can help them develop healthy ways to cope.

The most important thing you can do is to talk to them, even though it can be hard to get kids to open up. Ask them what’s going on in their lives and let them know that you’re there to support them, no matter what.You should also look for any of these warning signs: s

The Best Stress-Busters for Your Busy Schedule

Preventing and reducing stress can help you control your weight, sleep better and even improve your relationships. It can also lower your risk for heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure and other serious health issues. So follow these tips to help you relax, recharge and protect your health!

Plan Ahead: Make a to-do list, and focus on the tasks that are most urgent.You’ll still feel a sense of accomplishment even if you don’t get to the less important tasks.

Talk to Friends and Family: If you feel that telling a loved one what’s troubling you is a “burden,” you may be surprised by how willing people are to help – and how sharing your feelings can help you feel better. Besides giving you emotional support, your friends and family can be a valuable resource in other, more practical ways, like doing errands or other tasks to lighten your load – but they can only help if they know how you’re feeling.

Get Moving: Physical activity is a natural mood lifter that can relax your muscles and make it easier for you to fall asleep at night. Though you should aim to exercise at least three times a week for 30 minutes, even a 10-minute walk during your lunch break could give you the boost you need.

Eat Healthy Foods: To feel your best, your body needs to get enough vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. So even though you may crave chips or candy when you’re stressed, you’ll feel better if you have a healthy snack like almonds or an apple. Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and low-fat dairy will keep your energy levels up and could even improve your mood.

Take a Break: Meditation and other relaxation techniques like yoga and massage can reverse your body’s response to stress by lowering your blood pressure, slowing your heart rate and increasing blood

flow to your muscles. Short on time? Just close your eyes and breathe deeply for a minute or two.

2. Find low-calorie substitutes Once you’ve identified which foods you typically grab, you can start trading high-calorie, low-nutrient foods for healthy alternatives. If you typically eat fried foods or snacks like chips, try substituting other crunchy foods like air-popped popcorn and veggies with a low-calorie dip like hummus. Prefer sweet, creamy foods like ice cream and peanut butter? Pair the peanut butter with crunchy apple slices, or try fat-free yogurt with fresh fruit.

3. Nip stress in the bud The American Psychological Association reports that 38 percent of adults say they have overeaten or eaten unhealthy foods in the past month because of stress – and almost half of these adults did so weekly or more. Exercise is a great stress-buster, so make sure to check our (EALTHY ,IVING SECTION ON PAGE for helpful tips on how to get active and reduce your stress level.

4. Connect with others If you’re eating because you’re bored or lonely, it may help to connect, or reconnect, with family and friends. To broaden your circle of friends, consider taking a class to develop a new hobby or joining a community volunteer group in your neighborhood. Working with others for a common cause – and getting away from food triggers around the house – can improve your mood and make it less likely that you’ll turn to food to cope with your feelings.

5. EMOTIONAL Eater?

Kick the Habit with These Tips If you find yourself going to the kitchen for a snack even though you’re not hungry or eating more when you’re feeling stressed, sad or just plain bored, you might be an emotional eater. All of us eat in response to our moods sometimes, but if you find yourself consistently making poor food choices when you’re feeling stressed, depressed or anxious, it’s time to break that unhealthy habit. Here are a few tips to get you started.

1. Track it To identify the pattern of when, where and why you eat in response to how you feel, it’s helpful to keep a food journal for one week (use your 1199SEIU Benefit Fund Food & Fitness Journal, which you can pick up from your Outreach Coordinator or by attending one of our Wellness Department’s health fairs). Do you eat more after work when you’re tired from the stress of the day or at night when you’re bored?

Recognizing which situations may be causing you to overeat is the first step to creating strategies that can help you change the behavior. Also, ask yourself what types of foods you’re most likely to eat during these times, so you can replace high-fat, high-calorie foods with healthier choices.

A veces todos comemos como respuesta a nuestros estados de ánimo, pero si usted se encuentra eligiendo constantemente malas opciones de alimentos cuando se siente estresado, deprimido o ansioso, llegó el momento de romper ese hábito poco saludable. 1. 2. Mary Crosson

Losing 30 pounds was just the beginning – keeping the weight off with healthy lifestyle changes has made Mary Crosson feel like a new person.

As she thinks back on taking those first tough steps toward a healthier life, Mary Crosson can’t believe how many times she had the plan all mapped out in her head – eat a nutritious diet, exercise regularly and get proper rest – but didn’t take action. Instead, it took a serious warning from her primary care doctor three years ago for her to finally get moving, said Mary, a Certified Nursing Assistant at Sands Point Center for Health and Rehabilitation. “My doctor told me that both my blood pressure and cholesterol were high and if I didn’t lose weight, I was at risk for a heart attack, stroke or kidney disease,� she said.

There had been plenty of warning signs, Mary admitted, particularly as she approached 60. She often felt light-headed after walking up a short flight of stairs and had been getting chronic headaches. But her doctor did give her some good news: “She said if I changed how I was living, my body was still capable of recovering and would return me to good health, probably without medication,� Mary said. “My doctor helped me sketch out an exercise program and gave me information about eating healthy. She said if I tried that for a month, I might be surprised at the results.�

Sure enough, soon after she began walking three mornings a week near her home in Hempstead, New York, and sticking to a healthy diet, she had fewer headaches and her energy level soared. Her daughter Deborah joined her for many of those early morning walks to lend support, Mary said, and they both gained more strength and stamina with each outing. “Once I started walking, I’ve never stopped,� she said. “I still walk three mornings a week, and I also walk on my lunch break and do floor exercises at home to strengthen my lower back and core muscles.�

Of course, in order to reach her goal of losing 30 pounds and getting her blood pressure and cholesterol under control, she also needed to change her diet. She took her doctor’s advice and began eating salads with

low-fat dressing for lunch and snacking on carrot sticks and fresh fruits during the workday, but cutting out fried foods and desserts was tough. So rather than try to completely eliminate the fried chicken and fish she liked so much, Mary started using some of the same tips she’d give residents at Sands Point who needed to improve their nutrition. “I treated myself to one fried food and one dessert a week for a while,� she said “But now it’s more like once a month.� Chicken or fish are still regular dinner staples at home, but now they’re grilled or baked instead of fried, she said, and they’re always served with a side of vegetables, a salad or brown rice.

In a year’s time, by mid-2012, Mary reached her weight-loss goal: she weighed 149 pounds, down from 182, and felt like a new person. Just as important, changing her habits slowly and deliberately, with the help of her primary care physician, has allowed her to maintain the weight loss, and her blood pressure and cholesterol levels are back to normal. “So much has changed for the better by keeping up with good habits,� she said. “I used to feel tired all the time, but now I’m energized and even at age 63, I feel like I’m 30 all over again!�

Get Vaccinated Early When it comes to getting vaccinated for the flu, the sooner, the better! Flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May, so it’s best to get vaccinated yearly to protect yourself, your family and your patients or residents from the potentially serious virus. Here are just a few of the benefits of early vaccination:

Early protection helps you build the best defense.

You’ll save yourself a trip to the doctor.

Each year, the flu vaccine is designed to protect against the viruses most likely to cause illness in the coming season. But it can take your body about two weeks after vaccination to build up antibodies to protect you against influenza viruses. So early vaccination gives your body time to build its best defense against the flu.

Studies show that the flu vaccine reduces the risk of doctor visits due to flu by about 60 percent. While a vaccine can’t guarantee that you won’t get the flu, you are less likely to – and may have a milder case if you do – than those who don’t get the vaccine.

You’ll protect everyone around you.

Not only does the vaccine offer you the best protection against the potentially deadly consequences of the flu, it protects everyone around you – like your family, your coworkers and your patients or residents, especially the elderly.

It’s a powerful preventive tool.

If you have a chronic health condition like heart disease, diabetes or chronic lung disease, getting vaccinated reduces your likelihood of being hospitalized. The vaccine also helps protect pregnant women and their babies for up to six months after birth from being hospitalized.

She admits that it was a struggle at times, but she says her new healthy lifestyle has helped make her feel years younger.

The Fund believes the Eligibility Class III plan is a “grandfathered health plan� under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (the Affordable Care Act). As permitted by the Affordable Care Act, a grandfathered health plan can preserve certain basic health coverage that was already in effect when that law was enacted. Being a grandfathered health plan means that this plan may not include certain consumer protections of the Affordable Care Act that apply to other plans, for example, the requirement for an external review process for claims appeals.
