LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR As an 1199SEIU member, you know that your Benefit Fund has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to preventive care and wellness programs. In fact, many of you helped design the Protecting Our Health program by telling us exactly what type of wellness support you were looking for. So, it is interesting now to hear, as the nation is focused on healthcare, that these very programs you have enjoyed for many years are now considered part of meaningful reform.

In this issue of your member magazine For Your Benefit, we continue the tradition of bringing you the practical healthcare support and assistance you want. First, you will read about how our Benefit Fund can help you break bad habits and replace them with healthy new ones through our upcoming Protecting Our Health workshops. We will help you debunk the all-or-nothing approach to change, focusing instead on slow and steady progress. We talk about how this kind of change can help you stay on a healthy path during the holidays, and we have a new tool for you to use after attending the workshop to keep track of your progress.You will also find out about how to use our online Dialog Center, another resource just for 1199SEIU members that can help you keep your health on track.

Sometimes, though, getting healthy means early detection and the right care when you are sick. So, inside you will also find information about chronic kidney disease and what you can do to detect it early, as well as what breast cancer treatments are available to you through your Fund. And, you will learn about the many resources you have when you need care, from your non-emergency care options to avoid long waits and impersonal care in the Emergency Room to our new Aetna Signature Administrators wraparound network, which gives you more providers for your care outside New York City.

SUMMARY ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE 1199SEIU LEAGUE TRAINING AND UPGRADING FUND This is a summary of the annual report for the 1199SEIU League Training and Upgrading Fund (Employer Identification Number 13-2637580, Plan No. 501) for the period January 1, 2008 through December 31, 2008.

The annual report has been filed with the Employee Benefits Security Administration, as required under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA).

Basic Financial Statement The value of plan assets, after subtracting liabilities of the plan, was $23,399,213 as of December 31, 2008, compared to $24,078,933 as of January 1, 2008. During the plan year the plan experienced an decrease in its net assets of $679,720. This decrease includes unrealized appreciation and depreciation in the value of plan assets; that is, the difference between the value of the plan's assets at the end of the year and the value of the assets at the beginning of the year or the costs of assets acquired during the year. During the plan year, the plan had total income of $39,047,694, including employer contributions of $29,662,546, State grant income of $11,071,212 and net losses from investments of $<2,777,701>.

Plan expenses were $39,727,414. These expenses included $6,264,064 in administrative expenses, $33,463,350 in benefits paid to participants and beneficiaries, and $0 in other expenses.

The value of plan assets, after subtracting liabilities of the plan, was $16,566,352 as of December 31, 2008, compared to $17,826,170 as of January 1, 2008. During the plan year the plan experienced a decrease in its net assets of $<1,259,818>. This change includes unrealized appreciation and depreciation in the value of plan assets; that is, the difference between the value of the plan assets at the end of the year and the value of the assets at the beginning of the year or the costs of assets acquired during the year. The plan had total income of $21,830,774, including employer contributions of $22,925,076, program revenue of $646,029, and net losses of $<1,748,011>.

Total plan expenses were $23,090,592. These expenses included $5,098,851in administrative expenses and $17,991,741 in benefits paid to participants and beneficiaries.

Insurance Information The plan has contract(s) with the following insurance carrier(s): AMALGAMATED LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY and GUARDIAN LIFE INSURANCE OF AMERICA to pay certain claims incurred under the terms of the plan. The total premiums paid for the plan year ending December 31, 2008, were $7,968,499.

Because they are so-called "experience-rated" contract(s), the premium costs are affected by, among other things, the number and size of claims.

During the plan year, the plan had total income of $1,076,682,364, including employer contributions of $1,103,041,856, COBRA contributions of $3,293,786, and net losses from investments of $<31,128,480>.

Plan expenses were $1,091,223,349. These expenses included $81,468,879 in administrative expenses and $1,009,754,470 in benefits paid to participants and beneficiaries.

Plan expenses were $6,856,817. These expenses included $2,917,925 in administrative expenses and $3,938,892 in benefits paid to participants and beneficiaries.

SUMMARY ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE 1199SEIU LEAGUE REGISTERED NURSE TRAINING AND JOB SECURITY FUND This is a summary of the annual report of the 1199SEIU League Registered Nurse Training And Job Security Fund (Employer Identification Number 13-3946135, Plan No. 501) for the period January 1, 2008, through December 31, 2008. The annual report has been filed with the Employee Benefits Security Administration, as required under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA).

Basic Financial Statement The value of plan assets, after subtracting liabilities of the plan, was $1,462,826 as of December 31, 2008, compared to $2,763,161 as of January 1, 2008. During the plan year the plan experienced an decrease in its net assets of $1,300,335. This decrease includes unrealized appreciation and depreciation in the value of plan assets; that is, the difference between the value of the plan's assets at the end of the year and the value of the assets at the beginning of the year or the costs of assets acquired during the year. During the plan year, the plan had total income of $1,942,962, including employer contributions of $964,379, and interest income of $5,072.

Plan expenses were $3,243,297. These expenses included $439,052 in administrative expenses and $2,804,245 in benefits paid to participants.

Breaking Bad Habits Small Steps Can Get You There Be realistic.

Choose just one habit to break at a time. Have realistic expectations of yourself and your family, and don’t judge too harshly if you don’t succeed every time.

Be positive.

Talk with your family about the positive outcomes that will result from breaking bad habits.You’ll feel better and have more energy.

Be specific.

Make your habit changes specific. For instance, for the first week, eat fruit and healthy snacks instead of chips, or take the stairs instead of the elevator at least once a day.

Be accountable.

Write down your progress each day (use your food and fitness journal!), and reward yourself when you reach a goal.

A New Tool Just For You If you are like most people, you have a bad habit or two that you’d like to break. In fact, just like the rest of us, you’ve probably tried many times to manage your weight better, exercise more or quit smoking for good.That’s why our Benefit Fund has created new tools for you to use while trying to make some of those difficult healthy lifestyle changes – a brand-new Protecting Our Health workshop – Breaking Bad Habits – where you’ll receive tips and tools like a food and fitness journal to track your progress and stay accountable.

One of the most effective ways to make lifestyle changes is to write down what steps you are taking each day to reach your goal.

And we may be calling it a food and fitness journal, but the booklet has enough room to keep track of all sorts of information, so you can use it to tackle any bad habit you would like to work toward changing.

Your Rights Under the Women’s Health and Cancer Act Your 1199SEIU benefits support you every step of the way if you are battling breast cancer.The Benefit Fund makes certain you have access to quality oncology care by contracting with many of the top cancer treatment centers in the New York metropolitan area – so you don’t have to go outside your network.

Your Benefit Fund also provides coverage for mastectomy-related services including reconstructive surgery and prostheses. In fact, we consider this care so critical the Benefit Fund covered it even before it was required under the federal Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998.

These benefits are provided under the 1199SEIU National Benefit Fund, the 1199SEIU Greater New York Benefit Fund, the 1199SEIU National Benefit Fund for Home Care Employees and the 1199SEIU Home Health Aide Benefit Fund. Coverage is subject to benefit rules, exclusions and limitations that may apply under the Plan, as permitted by law.

Depending on your doctor’s recommendation, you are covered for: •

Reconstruction of the breast on which a mastectomy was performed;

•

Surgery and reconstruction of the other breast to achieve a symmetrical appearance;

•

Prostheses; and

•

Treatment for physical complications associated with all stages of the mastectomy, including lymphedemas.

Don’t Waste Time in the ER for Non-Emergency Care When we need care and our doctor isn’t available, there are many care options available to us through the Benefit Fund. For instance, we have access to Urgent Care Centers and Walk-In Health Centers, where we can receive care without an appointment and without the average five-hour wait associated with New York City ERs.These facilities are convenient, too, offering extended hours and treating chronic conditions, flu, allergic reactions, and minor injuries and burns.

The ER provides less personalized care Urgent Care Centers and Walk-In Health Centers also provide us with access to care that’s more personal. ER

staff is busy and less familiar with your personal history.

An Urgent Care doctor can spend more time with you, ask about your medical history and answer your questions.

Get Quicker, More Personal Care with Your 1199SEIU Nurse Helpline and Health Coaches We can also call – from the comfort of our homes – the 1199SEIU Nurse Helpline or a Health Coach at (866) 935-1199 for around-the-clock support, seven days a week. Nurses and Health Coaches are always standing by to answer your questions and concerns.

Of course, we always have access to the ER for emergency care when we need it. However, going to the ER when we don’t really need to puts a strain on our benefits. And since we have one of the best benefit packages in the country, we must all do everything we can to protect it – and that’s easy when our Benefit Fund provides so many options for quality care.

Breaking Bad Habits Small Steps Can Get You There Be realistic.

Choose just one habit to break at a time. Have realistic expectations of yourself and your family, and don’t judge too harshly if you don’t succeed every time.

Be positive.

Talk with your family about the positive outcomes that will result from breaking bad habits.You’ll feel better and have more energy.

Be specific.

Insurance Information The plan has contract(s) with the following insurance carrier(s): AMALGAMATED LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY and GUARDIAN LIFE INSURANCE OF AMERICA to pay certain claims incurred under the terms of the plan. The annual report has been filed with the Employee Benefits Security Administration, as required under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA).

Basic Financial Statement The value of plan assets, after subtracting liabilities of the plan, was $1,462,826 as of December 31, 2008, compared to $2,763,161 as of January 1, 2008. During the plan year the plan experienced an decrease in its net assets of $1,300,335. This decrease includes unrealized appreciation and depreciation in the value of plan assets; that is, the difference between the value of the plan's assets at the end of the year and the value of the assets at the beginning of the year or the costs of assets acquired during the year. During the plan year, the plan had total income of $1,942,962, including employer contributions of $964,379, and interest income of $5,072.

Plan expenses were $3,243,297. These expenses included $439,052 in administrative expenses and $2,804,245 in benefits paid to participants.

So, it is interesting now to hear, as the nation is focused on healthcare, that these very programs you have enjoyed for many years are now considered part of meaningful reform.

First, you will read about how our Benefit Fund can help you break bad habits and replace them with healthy new ones through our upcoming Protecting Our Health workshops. We will help you debunk the all-or-nothing approach to change, focusing instead on slow and steady progress. We talk about how this kind of change can help you stay on a healthy path during the holidays, and we have a new tool for you to use after attending the workshop to keep track of your progress.You will also find out about how to use our online Dialog Center, another resource just for 1199SEIU members that can help you keep your health on track.

Sometimes, though, getting healthy means early detection and the right care when you are sick. So, inside you will also find information about chronic kidney disease and what you can do to detect it early, as well as what breast cancer treatments are available to you through your Fund. And, you will learn about the many resources you have when you need care, from your non-emergency care options to avoid long waits and impersonal care in the Emergency Room to our new Aetna Signature Administrators wraparound network, which gives you more providers for your care outside New York City.
