If a plan is in reorganization status, it must provide notification that the plan is in reorganization status and that, if contributions are not increased, accrued benefits under the plan may be reduced or an excise tax may be imposed (or both). The law requires the plan to furnish this notification to each contributing employer and the labor organization.

Annual Funding Notice for the 1199SEIU Health Care Employees Pension Fund Introduction This notice, which federal law requires all multiemployer plans to send annually, includes important information about the funding level of the 1199SEIU Health Care Employees Pension Fund, EIN 13-3604862, PN 001 (Plan). This notice also includes information about rules governing insolvent plans and benefit payments guaranteed by the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC), a federal agency. This notice is for the plan year beginning January 1, 2007 and ending December 31, 2007.

Plan’s Funding Level The Plan’s “funded current liability percentage” for the Plan Year was 90.1%. In general, the higher the percentage, the better-funded the plan. The funded current liability percentage, however, is not indicative of how well a plan will be funded in the future or if it terminates.

Whether this percentage will increase or decrease over time depends on a number of factors, including how the plan’s investments perform, what assumptions the plan makes about rates of return, whether employer contributions to the fund increase or decline, and whether benefits payments from the fund increase or decline.

Despite the special plan reorganization rules, a plan in reorganization nevertheless could become insolvent. A plan is insolvent for a plan year if its available financial resources are not sufficient to pay benefits when due for the plan year. An insolvent plan must reduce benefit payments to the highest level that can be paid from the plan’s available financial resources. If such resources are not enough to pay benefits at a level specified by law (see “Benefit Payments Guaranteed by the PBGC,” below), the plan must apply to the PBGC for financial assistance.

The PBGC, by law, will loan the plan the amount necessary to pay benefits at the guaranteed level. Reduced benefits may be restored if the plan’s financial condition improves.

A plan that becomes insolvent must provide prompt notification of the insolvency to participants and beneficiaries, contributing employers, labor unions representing participants and PBGC. In addition, participants and beneficiaries also must receive information regarding whether, and how, their benefits will be reduced or affected as a result of the insolvency, including loss of a lump sum option. This information will be provided for each year the plan is insolvent.

Benefit Payments Guaranteed by the PBGC The maximum benefit that the PBGC guarantees is set by law. Only vested benefits are guaranteed. Specifically, the PBGC guarantees a monthly benefit payment equal to 100 percent of the first $11 of the Plan’s monthly benefit accrual rate, plus 75 percent of the next $33 of the accrual rate, times each year of credited service. The PBGC’s maximum guarantee, therefore, is $35.75 per month times the participant’s years of service.

Example 1: If a participant with 10 years of credited service has an accrued monthly benefit of $500, the accrual rate for purposes of determining the PBGC guarantee would be determined by dividing the monthly benefit by the participant’s years of service ($500/10), which equals $50. The guaranteed amount for a $50 monthly accrual rate is equal to the sum of $11 plus $24.75 (.75 x $33), or $35.75. Thus, the participant’s guaranteed monthly benefit is $357.50 ($35.75 x 10).

Example 2: If the participant in Example 1 has an accrued monthly benefit of $200, the accrual rate for purposes of determining the guarantee would be $20 (or $200/10). The guaranteed amount for a $20 monthly accrual rate is equal to the sum of $11 plus $6.75 (.75 x $9), or $17.75. Thus, the participant’s guaranteed monthly benefit would be $177.50 ($17.75 x 10).

In calculating a person’s monthly payment, the PBGC will disregard any benefit increases that were made under the plan within 60 months before the earlier of the plan’s termination or insolvency. Similarly, the PBGC does not guarantee pre-retirement death benefits to a spouse or beneficiary (e.g., a qualified pre-retirement survivor annuity) if the participant dies after the plan terminates, benefits above the normal retirement benefit, disability benefits not in pay status, or non-pension benefits, such as health insurance, life insurance, death benefits, vacation pay or severance pay.

Plan’s Financial Information The market value of the Plan’s assets as of January 1, 2008 was $9,082,662,956. The total amount of benefit payments for the Plan Year was $452,865,262. The ratio of assets to benefit payments is 20.0 to 1. This ratio suggests that the Plan’s assets could provide for approximately 20 years of benefit payments in annual amounts equal to what was paid out in the Plan Year.

However, the ratio does not take into account future changes in total benefit payments or plan assets.

Rules Governing Insolvent Plans Federal law has a number of special rules that apply to financially troubled multiemployer plans.

Under so-called “plan reorganization rules,” a plan with adverse financial experience may need

SUMMARY ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE 1199SEIU NATIONAL BENEFIT FUND FOR HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICE EMPLOYEES EIN 13-1628401 Plan No. 501, for the period January 1, 2007 through December 31, 2007 Insurance Information The plan has a contract with Amalgamated Life Insurance Company to pay certain claims incurred under the terms of the plan. The total premiums paid for the plan year ending December 31, 2007 were $7,805,935.

Because it is a so-called “experience-rated” contract, the premium costs are affected by, among other things, the number and size of claims. Of the total insurance premiums paid for the plan year ending December 31, 2007, the premiums paid under such “experience-rated” contract were $7,252,003, and the total of all benefit claims paid under the experience-rated contract during the plan year was $7,082,618.

Basic Financial Statement The value of Plan assets, after subtracting liabilities of the Plan, was $14,453,283 as of December 31, 2007, compared to $9,960,915 as of January 1, 2007. During the Plan year the Plan experienced an increase in its net assets of $4,492,368. This increase includes unrealized appreciation and depreciation in the value of Plan assets, that is, the difference between the value of the Plan's assets at the end of the year and the value of the assets at the beginning of the year or the cost of assets acquired during the year. During the Plan year, the Plan had total income of $9,481,719, including employer contributions of $9,498,130; grant income of $229,565; and losses from investments of $254,637.

Plan expenses were $4,989,351. These expenses included $1,564,170 in administrative expenses, and $3,425,181 in benefits paid to participants and beneficiaries.

SUMMARY ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1199SEIU LEAGUE REGISTERED NURSE TRAINING AND JOB SECURITY FUND This is a summary of the annual report of the 1199SEIU League Registered Nurse Training and Job Security Fund (Employer Identification No. 13-3946135, Plan No. 501), a Taft-Hartley trusteed-employee welfare benefit fund, for the period January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2007.

The annual report has been filed with the Department of Labor, as required under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA).

Basic Financial Statement

Basic Financial Statement The value of plan assets, after subtracting liabilities of the plan, was $145,586,916 as of December 31, 2007, compared to $135,352,231 as of January 1, 2007. During the plan year, the plan experienced an increase in its net assets of $10,234,685. This increase includes unrealized appreciation and depreciation in the value of plan assets, that is, the difference between the value of the plan’s assets at the end of the year and the value of the assets at the beginning of the year or the cost of assets acquired during the year. During the plan year, the plan had total income of $1,029,617,899, including employer contributions of $1,018,231,581; employee contributions for COBRA benefits of $2,707,323; and net earnings from investments of $5,703,498.

Plan expenses were $1,019,383,212. These expenses included $76,586,506 in administrative expenses and $942,796,709 in benefits paid to participants and beneficiaries.

SUMMARY ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE 1199SEIU HEALTH CARE EMPLOYEES PENSION FUND EIN 13-3604862, Plan No. 001 for the period January 1, 2007 through December 31, 2007 Basic Financial Statement Benefits under the plan are provided through a trust fund. Plan expenses were $487,975,240; these expenses included $35,109,978 in administrative expenses and $452,865,262 in benefits paid to participants and beneficiaries. A total of 204,594 persons were participants in or beneficiaries of the plan at the end of the plan year, although not all of these persons had yet earned the right to receive benefits.

The value of plan assets, after subtracting liabilities of the plan, was $9,082,662,956 as of December 31, 2007, compared to $8,743,762,876 as of January 1, 2007. During the plan year, the plan experienced an increase in its net assets of $338,900,080. This increase includes unrealized appreciation and depreciation in the value of plan assets, that is, the difference between the value of the plan’s assets at the end of the year and the value of the assets at the beginning of the year or the cost of assets acquired during the year. The plan had total income of $808,960,246, including employer contributions of $211,402,628 and net earnings from investments of $597,557,618.

Minimum Funding Standards An actuary’s statement shows that enough money was contributed to the plan to keep it funded in accordance with the minimum funding standards of ERISA.

The value of Plan assets, after subtracting liabilities of the Plan, was $2,763,161 as of December 31, 2007, compared to $1,882,649 as of January 1, 2007. During the Plan year the Plan experienced an increase in its net assets of $880,512. This increase includes unrealized appreciation and depreciation in the value of Plan assets, that is, the difference between the value of the Plan's assets at the end of the year and the value of the assets at the beginning of the year or the cost of assets acquired during the year. During the Plan year, the Plan had total income of $4,007,880, including employer contributions of $2,485,394; grant income of $1,490,156 and earnings from investments of $4,291.

Plan expenses were $3,127,368. These expenses included $556,043 in administrative expenses, and $2,571,325 in benefits paid to participants and beneficiaries.

Your pension dollars are managed jointly in our three 1199SEIU Pension Funds, which have billions of dollars in assets. And, you have a full-time investment staff, working for you every day to ensure that our assets are diversified and can weather economic downturns.

But we are not immune to a volatile market. We are being challenged to ensure the health of the 1199SEIU Pension Funds. It is important to remember that we have handled difficult markets in the past when our Fund had negative returns, such as right after 9/11. However, while the market recovered

The Earned Income Tax Credit Can Mean Thousands of Dollars More at Tax Time You work hard for your money, so when income tax time comes, why not make sure your refund is the highest it can be by applying for the Earned Income Tax Credit? Where to Apply for the Earned Income Tax Credit

Last year, our program helped many of you get thousands in your tax refund – and this year we’re doing it again. So read on to find where, when and how to take advantage of our discounted tax preparation.

As long as you’re filing a basic return, and your income is $55,000 or less if you’re claiming dependents (or $30,000 or less with no dependents), you can qualify for this program.

You can have your tax return prepared at discounted rates and apply for the Earned Income Tax Credit at Benefit Fund offices and satellite locations throughout New York City. There’s no need to make an appointment, because it’s first come, first served.

Prescription Programs Protect Your Benefits and Safeguard Your Health One of the benefits that sets you apart as an 1199SEIU member is your access to full prescription coverage with no out-of-pocket costs. Your Benefit Fund works closely with Medco’s clinicians to protect your prescription benefits while making sure you can use the most clinically effective medications on the market at the most affordable price. In January, we’ll be introducing some new programs that do more of that.

One of the ways we’ve been able to manage our prescription costs is by asking you to choose from the medications on the Benefit Fund’s Preferred Drug List, a list of commonly used, clinically effective medications for which we’ve negotiated the best prices. In January, we will be expanding our Preferred Drug List to include 10 more classes of commonly prescribed medications such as cough and cold drugs, acne therapy, asthma inhalers and certain prescription vitamins.

We will also be requiring Step Therapy for seven new specialty medications, including some of those that treat arthritis, diabetes and epilepsy. This program asks you to try a less-expensive, clinically effective version of a medication first to see if it works for you. If it doesn’t, your doctor can request that you “step up” to a costlier, brand-name medication. Step Therapy will only affect new users, not members who are already stabilized on their medications.

Finally, we will be working with your doctor to make sure that when he or she is prescribing certain specialty medications, they are the safest and most clinically effective dosages for the right length of time. For instance, some treatments are designed to work in a cycle, such as 10 days on the medication followed by 10 days off. These medications just wouldn’t be effective if you took them for 30 days in a row. Your Benefit Fund’s clinical team wants to make sure that you are getting the most from your treatment plan.

Keep Up Healthy Habits Through the Holidays Many of us have worked hard to introduce healthy eating and exercise habits into our lives. Then, make it a goal to eat well on the days you don’t have a party or celebration to attend.

Eat a small, nutritious snack before leaving for a party so you’re not too hungry and don’t binge on hors d'oeuvres. Don’t skip meals in anticipation of party eating.

Poached Pears

6 pears, peeled 2 cups apple juice 1 tsp. cinnamon Dash of nutmeg 1 clove 4 oz. dark chocolate

Peel the pears and keep in water with a dash of lemon juice to prevent browning. Put the pears in a pot with apple juice, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. Poach for about 20 minutes. In a bowl, microwave the dark chocolate. (Dark chocolate has less fat than milk chocolate and releases endorphins, which are good for you!) Pour chocolate over pears.

Good source of soluble fiber (from the pear) and antioxidants (from the dark chocolate)!

The Skinny on Healthy Fats We hear so much about avoiding fatty foods, but healthy fats play an important role in our diet. In fact, a healthy diet should contain fat as 25 to 35% of your total daily calories.

It’s all in making sure you’re getting the right kind of fat in your diet. The basic rule of thumb is to include mostly unsaturated fats. Limit your intake of saturated and trans fats, which are listed on nutrition labels as “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated” vegetable oils. In fact, the trans fats that are found in oils, shortening and margarine are such a cause for concern that food manufacturers are now required to list trans fats separately on the nutrition label, and New York City has banned restaurants and bakeries from using trans fats at all.

Monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats like the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish produce a world of healthy side effects for us. They provide antioxidants and help our bodies absorb nutrients

The Skinny on Healthy Fats We hear so much about avoiding fatty foods, but healthy fats play an important role in our diet. In fact, a healthy diet should contain fat as 25 to 35% of your total daily calories.

It’s all in making sure you’re getting the right kind of fat in your diet. The basic rule of thumb is to include mostly unsaturated fats. Limit your intake of saturated and trans fats, which are listed on nutrition labels as “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated” vegetable oils. In fact, the trans fats that are found in oils, shortening and margarine are such a cause for concern that food manufacturers are now required to list trans fats separately on the nutrition label, and New York City has banned restaurants and bakeries from using trans fats at all.

Monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats like the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish produce a world of healthy side effects for us. They provide antioxidants and help our bodies absorb nutrients

Su Fondo de Beneficios trabaja estrechamente con profesionales clínicos de Medco, a fin de proteger sus beneficios de medicamentos de venta con receta médica y al mismo tiempo garantizar que pueda usar los medicamentos clínicamente más eficaces del mercado al precio más asequible. Keep Up Healthy Habits Through the Holidays Many of us have worked hard to introduce healthy eating and exercise habits into our lives. If you are one of the thousands of members who attended one of our Wellness Program’s nutrition workshops or health fairs this year, we know that you have committed to get your health on track. But it’s easy to forget to put your health first during the busy, stressful holiday season.

Offer to bring a festive, healthy dish, like the Poached Pears from the Benefit Fund’s What’s Cooking cookbook (see recipe below).

Dress the part. Wear a flattering outfit that highlights your eating and exercise successes, and you’ll be less likely to overindulge.

You may be worrying about gaining a few pounds or losing track of the exercise routines or other healthy habits you’ve worked into your life. But remember, healthy living doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Just taking a few steps can help you hold on to all of your hard work.

Start a new holiday tradition by going for a walk with the entire family after a big holiday meal.

At parties, look at all the foods offered on the buffet table and pick a few that you enjoy most.

Then, make it a goal to eat well on the days you don’t have a party or celebration to attend.

Eat a small, nutritious snack before leaving for a party so you’re not too hungry and don’t binge on hors d'oeuvres. Don’t skip meals in anticipation of party eating.

The calories in alcohol add up quickly, and if you’re drinking, you’re also liable to eat more.

Make every other drink calorie-free by choosing seltzer with lime or a splash of juice, or a diet soda.

Poached Pears

(serves six) Nancy Storch, RN, St. John's Episcopal Hospital Ingredients:

Directions:

6 pears, peeled 2 cups apple juice 1 tsp. cinnamon Dash of nutmeg 1 clove 4 oz. dark chocolate

Peel the pears and keep in water with a dash of lemon juice to prevent browning. Put the pears in a pot with apple juice, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. Poach for about 20 minutes. In a bowl, microwave the dark chocolate. (Dark chocolate has less fat than milk chocolate and releases endorphins, which are good for you!) Pour chocolate over pears.

Good source of soluble fiber (from the pear) and antioxidants (from the dark chocolate)!

Prescription Programs Protect Your Benefits and Safeguard Your Health One of the benefits that sets you apart as an 1199SEIU member is your access to full prescription coverage with no out-of-pocket costs. Your Benefit Fund works closely with Medco’s clinicians to protect your prescription benefits while making sure you can use the most clinically effective medications on the market at the most affordable price. In January, we’ll be introducing some new programs that do more of that.

One of the ways we’ve been able to manage our prescription costs is by asking you to choose from the medications on the Benefit Fund’s Preferred Drug List, a list of commonly used, clinically effective medications for which we’ve negotiated the best prices. In January, we will be expanding our Preferred Drug List to include 10 more classes of commonly prescribed medications such as cough and cold drugs, acne therapy, asthma inhalers and certain prescription vitamins.

We will also be requiring Step Therapy for seven new specialty medications, including some of those that treat arthritis, diabetes and epilepsy. This program asks you to try a less-expensive, clinically effective version of a medication first to see if it works for you. If it doesn’t, your doctor can request that you “step up” to a costlier, brand-name medication. Step Therapy will only affect new users, not members who are already stabilized on their medications.

Finally, we will be working with your doctor to make sure that when he or she is prescribing certain specialty medications, they are the safest and most clinically effective dosages for the right length of time. For instance, some treatments are designed to work in a cycle, such as 10 days on the medication followed by 10 days off. These medications just wouldn’t be effective if you took them for 30 days in a row. Your Benefit Fund’s clinical team wants to make sure that you are getting the most from your treatment plan.

The Earned Income Tax Credit Can Mean Thousands of Dollars More at Tax Time You work hard for your money, so when income tax time comes, why not make sure your refund is the highest it can be by applying for the Earned Income Tax Credit? Thousands of 1199SEIU members are eligible for it, and every year the Benefit Fund’s Earned Income Tax Credit Assistance Program helps members claim the money they earned – and deserve.

Where to Apply for the Earned Income Tax Credit

Last year, our program helped many of you get thousands in your tax refund – and this year we’re doing it again. So read on to find where, when and how to take advantage of our discounted tax preparation.

As long as you’re filing a basic return, and your income is $55,000 or less if you’re claiming dependents (or $30,000 or less with no dependents), you can qualify for this program.

You can have your tax return prepared at discounted rates and apply for the Earned Income Tax Credit at Benefit Fund offices and satellite locations throughout New York City. There’s no need to make an appointment, because it’s first come, first served.
