In recent issues of For Your Benefit, we told you about our partnership with the Union and employers to help create a culture of health at your worksite. In this issue, we tell you how you can do your part by becoming a Wellness Champion at your workplace. As healthcare workers, we are in the unique position of knowing what we need to do to stay healthy and being able to help and encourage each other along the way. By volunteering to become a Wellness Champion, you can lead by example, learning more about your Funds’ wellness and health coaching programs and sharing what you know with co-workers, encouraging them to attend workshops on exercise or stress management, organizing a walking group or a friendly weight-loss competition, or creating a contest to submit recipes for the Funds’ new What’s Cooking Now cookbook. You will be surprised at what a difference one person can make.

Getting involved and sharing ideas are powerful ways we can help each other care for ourselves as much as we care for others. You will read about how one member won a “Biggest Loser” contest at her institution and lost more than 30 pounds by making simple changes in her diet. You will also learn about another health risk that can accompany the holidays – depression – and about how your Funds can help you conquer it.

Vacúnese contra la gripe. La mejor forma de protegerse contra la gripe es vacunándose contra ella. We’ve teamed up with the Union and the League of Voluntary Hospitals and Homes to support worksite collaboration and initiatives that will promote better health for 1199SEIU members. And that’s where you come in.

Take the Pledge to become a Wellness Champion and help yourself and your co-workers lead healthier lives.Wellness Champions develop and sustain initiatives at the worksite, including spreading the word and organizing meetings and events. Champions will not only help get the word out, but may also help develop some of the onsite programs, such as a walking program, a competition to submit recipes for the new edition of the Funds’ cookbook, What’s Cooking Now, or even an exercise workshop.

A Healthier Diet Has Made All the Difference Cynthia Perez’s nutritious eating habits won her the “Biggest Loser” title at work – and have given her a new outlook on life.

Like many of us, Cynthia Perez had made New Year’s resolutions to lose weight before, only to have her good intentions give way to old habits. After vowing one more time to make changes in the New Year, Cynthia went to see her doctor last January because she was having heart palpitations. She weighed about 175 pounds, at least 30 pounds more than was healthy for her height, and her doctor said her weight was likely the reason that her heart felt like it was fluttering at least a few times a week. “My doctor said losing weight would be the best thing I could do, because in the last few years I’d gained quite a bit,” Cynthia remembered. “She showed me the chart, but I didn’t really need to see it – I knew.”

Soon after that visit, Cynthia, an 1199SEIU member for eight years and an operating room scheduler at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, saw a flyer at the medical center for a “Biggest Loser” contest. The weight loss contest was open to all hospital employees and would award a pair of cash prizes to the man and woman who lost the highest percentage of their body weight over a 10-week period. Lutheran’s “Biggest Loser” contest is a good example of how institutions can promote incentive-based wellness programs, and the National Benefit Fund – in partnership with the Union and League of Voluntary Hospitals and Homes – will be awarding up to ten institutions $4,500 a year to further these types of efforts. The partnership will soon be expanding its awards program to include Greater New York facilities as well.

Cynthia decided to enter the “Biggest Loser” contest, figuring it would be added motivation to stick to her new diet, and that the $400 prize could come in handy to pay off some bills. Among her first changes, she replaced soda and sugary fruit juices with water and began ordering a different breakfast at her local coffee shop. “I used to eat ham, egg and cheese on a roll almost every morning,” she said. “Now I have egg whites with ketchup, that’s it.”

By the time the “Biggest Loser” contest got under way in February, Cynthia was nearly two months into her new diet and was down to 161 pounds, which she thought would hurt her chances of winning the competition. But after 10 weeks, she went for the final weigh-in and found she had dropped another 7 percent of her body weight, finishing the contest at 150 pounds.To her surprise, she was the “Biggest Loser” among the 56 women who participated. “It’s tough in the fall because I am in school to become a nurse, and my class schedule makes it harder to find the time to exercise,” she said.“But I’ll stay with it as best as I can and I’m definitely going to keep eating the healthy foods.”

When Cynthia’s doctor referred her to a nutritionist, she began to really think about the food she and her family were eating. The nutritionist has helped her learn what foods to watch out for, whether she’s eating out, shopping for groceries or cooking dinner at her home in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Her husband, Rafael, has also joined the effort, and together they make sure to read food labels closely and limit sugar, sodium and other unhealthy ingredients. As someone whose family has a history of hypertension and diabetes and as the mother of two children, Cynthia said she was also motivated to change her diet and stay healthy so she can see her children, Jasmine and Justin, raise families of their own. The family now eats lots of fruits, vegetables, chicken, fish, whole grains and whole-wheat bread, and her nutritious diet has done more than just help her drop more than 30 pounds.

“Losing the weight has changed so many things for me,” she said. “I feel better, my clothes fit better, I have more energy and I’m more able to be the person I want to be, personally and professionally.”

The New “MyPlate” Can Make Eating Well Easier In June 2011, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) unveiled “MyPlate,” the new icon that replaces the 19-year-old food pyramid, which many found difficult to understand.This new, colorful, four-part plate was designed to be a simple, easy-to-read reminder of what constitutes a balanced meal for our nation’s families.

Get Portion Control!

Throughout the years, our portion size has gradually increased from healthful to huge.

“Super-sizing” has led us to believe that more is better. However, researchers say that larger portions will almost always cause people to overeat unintentionally. If you, like many of us, grew up hearing the words “finish what’s on your plate,” it’s hard to walk away from a plate with food left over. Here are some simple ways to avoid the weight gain that can come with super-size meals and get portion size under control: • •

The new icon of the latest U.S. Dietary Guidelines, MyPlate, is divided into four sections – red for fruits, green for vegetables, orange for grains and purple for protein.There is a separate blue section for dairy as well. Contrary to the old pyramid, MyPlate recommends making half of your plate fruits and vegetables, has increased the grains portion and has made protein the smallest part of the plate. Of course, the MyPlate icon does not include all of the Dietary Guidelines, such as avoiding sweets and desserts (“empty calories”), and while the occasional sweet won’t hurt you, most people eat far more than is healthy. That’s why the USDA suggests lowering your intake by eating and drinking fewer not-so-healthy foods and beverages containing “empty calories.”

Use smaller plates (10-inch instead of 12-inch or a lunch-sized plate).

Serve plates from the stove or counter (don’t leave the food on the table within arm’s reach).

Read nutrition labels to find out how many servings are in each container.

When eating at a restaurant, ask the waiter to wrap half of your full-sized entrée as soon as you get it or split an entrée with your dining partner.

Create your own single-serving bags of snacks like pretzels so that you won’t be tempted to eat the whole six-serving bag.

Chew longer: A recent study from the Harbin Medical University in China found that people who chewed their food 40 times instead of a typical 15 would take in about 12 percent fewer calories – which can mean weight loss of up to 25 pounds in a year!

Use the WebMD Portion Size Plate tool, found at www.webmd.com/diet/healthtoolportion-size-plate. The tool measures out a variety of foods using basic items (such as a baseball, computer mouse, etc.) to help you see the proper amount of food you should eat.

No tiene que Combatir la Depresión o Ansiedad por su Cuenta Todo el mundo se siente triste de vez en cuando, y una pérdida significativa o problemas en su vida con frecuencia pueden producir un período de tristeza, ansiedad o trastorno general en su rutina cotidiana. Pero si tiene períodos prolongados en que se siente triste la mayor parte del tiempo y descubre que ha perdido interés en las cosas que solía disfrutar, es posible que esté sufriendo de depresión. Las afecciones médicas crónicas tales como el cáncer, la diabetes o la hipertensión también le pueden poner en un mayor riesgo de sufrir de depresión y trastornos de ansiedad. Por ejemplo, la Alianza Nacional sobre Enfermedades Mentales (National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI) calcula que la depresión afecta hasta al 25% de los pacientes de cáncer. ¿Y sabía usted que si sufre de diabetes, y no obtiene tratamiento para su depresión, puede estar poniendo su salud en riesgo? Fitness Routine This Season There’s no reason to wait until New Year’s Eve to decide to live a healthier life. In fact, fall may be the best time of all to start exercising – summer’s scorching temperatures are just a memory, and the cold and snow of winter are still months away. So if you’ve been exercising already, by all means keep it up. But if you spent too much time inside this summer just trying to stay cool, now’s the time to get outside and improve your health. Here are some tips to help you get started: Take advantage of the weather.

A crisp fall afternoon often provides the ideal conditions for a walk.You won’t have to worry about overheating, and yet with temperatures in the 40s and 50s it’s still warm enough to walk or exercise outdoors and burn off calories. Just lace up your sneakers, pull on a light jacket and go!

Exercise early in the day.

With the sun setting earlier, avoid going for a walk in the dark – or giving up on the idea altogether – and get into the habit of taking your walks in the morning or on your lunch break with co-workers.

This way, the workout is done and you feel great all day.

Work exercise into your daily activities.

If you’re going to the playground to watch your children’s games, walk a few laps around the perimeter rather than camping out on the bleachers. Or get off your subway or bus a stop or two early and walk the rest of the way.

Head to the park.

You Don’t Have to Battle Depression or Anxiety on Your Own Everyone feels down once in a while, and a significant loss or trouble in your life can often result in a period of sadness, anxiety or general disruption in your daily routine. But if you have prolonged periods when you feel sad much of the time or find that you have lost interest in things you used to enjoy, you may be suffering from depression. Chronic medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes or hypertension can also put you at greater risk for depression and anxiety disorders.

For example, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) estimates that depression affects as many as 25 percent of cancer patients. And did you know that if you have diabetes, and do not get treatment for your depression, you can put your health at risk? It makes it harder to stick to your exercise routine or healthy diet, which can lead to more serious health problems.

NAMI estimates that about 15 million people in the United States experience some form of depression each year. And as many as 40 million people struggle with some form of anxiety that makes it hard to get through the day – whether they’re feeling overwhelmed by everyday life or constantly worrying about themselves or their loved ones. Still, many people don’t seek help for their depression or anxiety because they feel they should handle it by themselves and “get over it,” or because they think there’s something wrong with them that they just can’t be happy. But it’s not that simple. Both depression and anxiety are chronic conditions that can be treated – and your Benefit Fund is here to help.

We offer comprehensive coverage for treating depression and anxiety disorders. In addition, our Wellness/Member Assistance Program (MAP) is staffed by social workers who can help assess your symptoms, guide you through the screening process and work with your healthcare provider to develop a personalized treatment plan to treat your depression or anxiety. You may receive in-patient care, outpatient counseling, medication or a combination of all of these approaches.

We also regularly offer workshops at your worksites and at the Funds’ main office in Manhattan to help you learn how to better manage stress or anger – two common triggers for depression and anxiety – and you’ll find our MAP social workers at any of these workshops.

Flu Shot Cold and flu season is not far off. The fall months are when doctors recommend you begin taking precautions to protect yourself against catching a cold or being bedridden with the flu. Here are a few tips to help keep you feeling well all winter long: •

Get a flu shot. The single best way to protect yourself against the flu is by getting a flu shot.

Complications from the flu can be serious, especially for infants, young children and elderly adults, and people with heart disease, diabetes, asthma and other chronic conditions.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that children as young as six months get vaccinated, so be sure that the whole family receives the vaccine. Sign up for a free flu shot, provided by your employer at your worksite. Of course, if your employer isn’t offering the vaccine, remember that your Benefit Fund covers the shots, so just make an appointment with your healthcare provider.

Wash your hands often. If there’s no soap dispenser handy, rinsing your hands with water will also help reduce your chances of catching a cold.

You Don’t Have to Battle Depression or Anxiety on Your Own Everyone feels down once in a while, and a significant loss or trouble in your life can often result in a period of sadness, anxiety or general disruption in your daily routine. But if you have prolonged periods when you feel sad much of the time or find that you have lost interest in things you used to enjoy, you may be suffering from depression. Chronic medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes or hypertension can also put you at greater risk for depression and anxiety disorders.

For example, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) estimates that depression affects as many as 25 percent of cancer patients. And did you know that if you have diabetes, and do not get treatment for your depression, you can put your health at risk? It makes it harder to stick to your exercise routine or healthy diet, which can lead to more serious health problems.

NAMI estimates that about 15 million people in the United States experience some form of depression each year. And as many as 40 million people struggle with some form of anxiety that makes it hard to get through the day – whether they’re feeling overwhelmed by everyday life or constantly worrying about themselves or their loved ones. Still, many people don’t seek help for their depression or anxiety because they feel they should handle it by themselves and “get over it,” or because they think there’s something wrong with them that they just can’t be happy. But it’s not that simple. Both depression and anxiety are chronic conditions that can be treated – and your Benefit Fund is here to help.

We offer comprehensive coverage for treating depression and anxiety disorders. In addition, our Wellness/Member Assistance Program (MAP) is staffed by social workers who can help assess your symptoms, guide you through the screening process and work with your healthcare provider to develop a personalized treatment plan to treat your depression or anxiety. You may receive in-patient care, outpatient counseling, medication or a combination of all of these approaches.

We also regularly offer workshops at your worksites and at the Funds’ main office in Manhattan to help you learn how to better manage stress or anger – two common triggers for depression and anxiety – and you’ll find our MAP social workers at any of these workshops.

Our social workers are also onsite at most of our health fairs and health-awareness days, which, like our workshops, are routinely held at your worksite and at Funds headquarters. Fitness Routine This Season There’s no reason to wait until New Year’s Eve to decide to live a healthier life. In fact, fall may be the best time of all to start exercising – summer’s scorching temperatures are just a memory, and the cold and snow of winter are still months away. So if you’ve been exercising already, by all means keep it up. But if you spent too much time inside this summer just trying to stay cool, now’s the time to get outside and improve your health. Here are some tips to help you get started: Take advantage of the weather.

A crisp fall afternoon often provides the ideal conditions for a walk.You won’t have to worry about overheating, and yet with temperatures in the 40s and 50s it’s still warm enough to walk or exercise outdoors and burn off calories. Just lace up your sneakers, pull on a light jacket and go!

Exercise early in the day.

With the sun setting earlier, avoid going for a walk in the dark – or giving up on the idea altogether – and get into the habit of taking your walks in the morning or on your lunch break with co-workers.

This way, the workout is done and you feel great all day.

Work exercise into your daily activities.

If you’re going to the playground to watch your children’s games, walk a few laps around the perimeter rather than camping out on the bleachers. Or get off your subway or bus a stop or two early and walk the rest of the way.

Head to the park.

In June 2011, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) unveiled “MyPlate,” the new icon that replaces the 19-year-old food pyramid, which many found difficult to understand.This new, colorful, four-part plate was designed to be a simple, easy-to-read reminder of what constitutes a balanced meal for our nation’s families.

Get Portion Control!

Throughout the years, our portion size has gradually increased from healthful to huge.

“Super-sizing” has led us to believe that more is better. However, researchers say that larger portions will almost always cause people to overeat unintentionally. If you, like many of us, grew up hearing the words “finish what’s on your plate,” it’s hard to walk away from a plate with food left over. Here are some simple ways to avoid the weight gain that can come with super-size meals and get portion size under control: • •

The new icon of the latest U.S. Dietary Guidelines, MyPlate, is divided into four sections – red for fruits, green for vegetables, orange for grains and purple for protein.There is a separate blue section for dairy as well. Contrary to the old pyramid, MyPlate recommends making half of your plate fruits and vegetables, has increased the grains portion and has made protein the smallest part of the plate. Of course, the MyPlate icon does not include all of the Dietary Guidelines, such as avoiding sweets and desserts (“empty calories”), and while the occasional sweet won’t hurt you, most people eat far more than is healthy. That’s why the USDA suggests lowering your intake by eating and drinking fewer not-so-healthy foods and beverages containing “empty calories.”

Chew longer: A recent study from the Harbin Medical University in China found that people who chewed their food 40 times instead of a typical 15 would take in about 12 percent fewer calories – which can mean weight loss of up to 25 pounds in a year!

How Changing Her Diet Changed Cynthia’s Life When Cynthia’s doctor referred her to a nutritionist, she began to really think about the food she and her family were eating. The nutritionist has helped her learn what foods to watch out for, whether she’s eating out, shopping for groceries or cooking dinner at her home in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Cynthia Perez A Healthier Diet Has Made All the Difference Cynthia Perez’s nutritious eating habits won her the “Biggest Loser” title at work – and have given her a new outlook on life.

Like many of us, Cynthia Perez had made New Year’s resolutions to lose weight before, only to have her good intentions give way to old habits. After vowing one more time to make changes in the New Year, Cynthia went to see her doctor last January because she was having heart palpitations. She weighed about 175 pounds, at least 30 pounds more than was healthy for her height, and her doctor said her weight was likely the reason that her heart felt like it was fluttering at least a few times a week. “My doctor said losing weight would be the best thing I could do, because in the last few years I’d gained quite a bit,” Cynthia remembered. “She showed me the chart, but I didn’t really need to see it – I knew.”

Soon after that visit, Cynthia, an 1199SEIU member for eight years and an operating room scheduler at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, saw a flyer at the medical center for a “Biggest Loser” contest. The weight loss contest was open to all hospital employees and would award a pair of cash prizes to the man and woman who lost the highest percentage of their body weight over a 10-week period. Lutheran’s “Biggest Loser” contest is a good example of how institutions can promote incentive-based wellness programs, and the National Benefit Fund – in partnership with the Union and League of Voluntary Hospitals and Homes – will be awarding up to ten institutions $4,500 a year to further these types of efforts. The partnership will soon be expanding its awards program to include Greater New York facilities as well.

Cynthia decided to enter the “Biggest Loser” contest, figuring it would be added motivation to stick to her new diet, and that the $400 prize could come in handy to pay off some bills. Among her first changes, she replaced soda and sugary fruit juices with water and began ordering a different breakfast at her local coffee shop. “I used to eat ham, egg and cheese on a roll almost every morning,” she said. “Now I have egg whites with ketchup, that’s it.”

By the time the “Biggest Loser” contest got under way in February, Cynthia was nearly two months into her new diet and was down to 161 pounds, which she thought would hurt her chances of winning the competition. But after 10 weeks, she went for the final weigh-in and found she had dropped another 7 percent of her body weight, finishing the contest at 150 pounds.To her surprise, she was the “Biggest Loser” among the 56 women who participated. No olvide vacunarse contra la gripe La temporada del resfriado y la gripe puede parecer lejana pero es en los meses del otoño en que los médicos recomiendan que comience a tomar precauciones para protegerse de pescar un resfriado o caer enfermo en cama con la gripe. In recent issues of For Your Benefit, we told you about our partnership with the Union and employers to help create a culture of health at your worksite. In this issue, we tell you how you can do your part by becoming a Wellness Champion at your workplace. As healthcare workers, we are in the unique position of knowing what we need to do to stay healthy and being able to help and encourage each other along the way. By volunteering to become a Wellness Champion, you can lead by example, learning more about your Funds’ wellness and health coaching programs and sharing what you know with co-workers, encouraging them to attend workshops on exercise or stress management, organizing a walking group or a friendly weight-loss competition, or creating a contest to submit recipes for the Funds’ new What’s Cooking Now cookbook. You will be surprised at what a difference one person can make.

Getting involved and sharing ideas are powerful ways we can help each other care for ourselves as much as we care for others. You will read about how one member won a “Biggest Loser” contest at her institution and lost more than 30 pounds by making simple changes in her diet. You will also learn about another health risk that can accompany the holidays – depression – and about how your Funds can help you conquer it.
