In this issue, we provide important information about a health crisis that is affecting the lives of millions of people in the U.S.: opioid addiction. We detail the dangers posed by painkiller medications, and our Chief Medical Officer, Dr.Van H. Dunn, outlines the steps your Benefit Fund is taking to help you reduce the risk of becoming addicted, as well as to help those who may be struggling.

Join us at our Wellness Department’s “Healthy Habits, Healthy Families” workshop* on Saturday, January 27, to learn what you can do to develop fitness habits and lower your stress through healthy communications. Plus, a registered dietitian will demonstrate how to cook some quick and easy balanced meals the whole family will enjoy. You’ll also have the chance to get moving in an all-ages aerobics class, so be sure to bring your family and wear comfortable clothing!

Apply for Your Pension Online!

If you are eligible for a pension benefit, applying for it is now easier than ever with our new secure online pension application. Just visit our website, www.1199SEIUBenefits.org, and log in to My Account (or create an account if you don’t already have one) from the privacy and convenience of your home. Once you’re logged in, click on the “My Pension” tab, select “Apply for Pension” from the dropdown menu and follow the steps provided—you’ll find it’s very user-friendly! The online application process will allow you to review and edit your personal information and work history, check out the different pension and beneficiary options and upload all the documents you’ll need to apply for your pension. The system will also alert you if you’re missing information or need to make corrections on any of the forms you filled out, saving you time by resolving the issue on the spot.

If you’re not close to retirement age yet, you can still request a pension estimate online through My Account.

Take Advantage of Free Tax Preparation Assistance For years, the 1199SEIU Benefit Fund’s Tax Preparation Assistance Program has helped Home Care members claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and get the most out of your tax return. The EITC is not a refund—it is additional money from the government in the form of a tax credit.

In addition, they will offer Self Prep, a quick, easy and secure online self-preparation option that you can use from the comfort of your home. It comes with step-by-step instructions and phone assistance. Whether or not you receive health coverage through the Fund, all Home Care members are eligible to receive free tax preparation assistance. Help is available in multiple languages. The program has served thousands of members, and in 2018, the Fund is again partnering with the NYC Coalition during the city’s annual Tax Season Initiative to help you get your taxes prepared accurately and make sure your refund includes everything you’re entitled to.

The NYC Coalition is led by the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs’ Office of Financial Empowerment and includes Food Bank For New York City and the nonprofit financial education program Ariva. As long as your 2017 household income was below $54,000 (or $30,000 if you are single and have no dependents), our partners at the Food Bank For New York City and Ariva are offering free tax preparation events at sites throughout the five boroughs.

The Food Bank For New York City also offers the Virtual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (Virtual VITA) program for convenient electronic filing (e-filing) at various locations.You are eligible to use Virtual VITA if your 2017

Addiction to Painkillers Is Common:

What You Need to Know More and more patients are being prescribed long-term prescriptions for powerful painkillers called opioids, such as oxycodone, codeine and morphine, for chronic and severe pain. From 1999 to 2014, the number of opioid prescriptions has quadrupled. This increase has led to a serious problem of addiction across the United States and poses a dangerous threat to healthcare workers, who often perform physical tasks and sometimes have to move patients or do heavy lifting, making them more likely to experience chronic pain.

Some other signs of opioid addiction include: • Increased sensitivity to pain • Increased anxiety • Nausea and vomiting • Constipation and bowel dysfunction • Hot and cold sweats or goose bumps • Breathing problems • Irregular heart rhythms • Inability to fall asleep or stay asleep

Opioid addiction can damage personal relationships, hurt finances and cause other serious health issues. Even more sobering is that more than 300,000 people have died from opioid overdoses since 2000, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That is why it’s so important to be careful if your doctor has prescribed opioids for you.

With long-term use, their pain-relieving effects lessen and you need to take more of them to relieve the pain.Your body can easily become dependent on the drugs, causing withdrawal symptoms—which makes it difficult to stop taking them.

If you are suffering from chronic pain, ask your doctor what alternative treatments you could try. In addition to other over-the-counter and prescription pain relievers, there are alternative treatment options to discuss with your doctor, in combination with medications, such as physical and occupational therapy; stress management; relaxation techniques; massage; acupuncture; and chiropractic care.

Opioid painkillers should only be prescribed for palliative care for the terminally ill or on a short-term basis for pain relief after major surgery. It’s too easy to become dependent on opioids, and long-term use is dangerous to your health. For some patients, opioid dependence can begin to develop within a week of taking the drugs, even when taken as prescribed.

Of course, the longer you take opioids, the greater your risk of developing an addiction.You may feel a compulsive need to use them for longer than prescribed or take more than the prescribed dose. Or when you try to stop taking them, you may experience withdrawal symptoms that can be mistaken for symptoms of a flu or other virus, like upset stomach, nausea, or body aches and pains.You may also lack your usual energy, have intense mood swings, and withdraw socially from family and friends.

News You Can Use Exercise Can Help Fight Depression One more reason to get moving: Doing just one hour a week of exercise may lower your long-term risk for depression, according to a study in the American Journal of Psychiatry. Researchers found that those who did one hour of exercise a week, regardless of intensity level, were 44 percent less likely to develop depression over the course of a decade than those who never worked out. So find an exercise routine you enjoy—and be sure to stick with it!

24-Hour Health Helpline for Members Who Don’t Receive Health Benefits Even if you are not eligible for health benefits through the Benefit Fund, we have you covered—with a dedicated Health Helpline created especially for you. The Helpline is only for you. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the Helpline is there to provide answers to any medical question you may have. If you run a fever in the middle of the night or you wake up with a stiff back and you’re not sure what to do, a nurse is on hand to help you. Just call (855) 834-6139. Talking with a nurse from the comfort of your home could spare you a trip to an urgent care center or a crowded emergency room, where you could spend hours waiting.

Teladoc Lets Members with Health Benefits See a Doctor Without Leaving Home If you aren’t feeling well and your own doctor is not available, get the care you need right from home, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with Teladoc. Why drag yourself to an urgent care center or endure a long wait in an emergency room when quality care is just a phone call or a click away?

With Teladoc’s telehealth service, you can: • Speak with one of more than 3,600 board-certified doctors by phone or online video, any time of the day or night; • Get diagnosis and recommended treatment for symptoms such as backaches, sprains and strains, flu, rashes and more; and • Get a prescription for medication, if necessary.

If your children receive health coverage through our Benefit Fund, they are eligible to use Teladoc, too. If you haven’t set up your Teladoc account, do it now so that it’s there when you need it. As you are probably aware, opioid addiction has become a national health crisis. If you or a loved one is struggling with pain or addiction, we are here to help. Together with your healthcare provider, we will work with you to get you the pain management care you need without developing a potentially lethal dependence on powerful narcotic prescriptions. If you believe you’re having difficulties with prescription pain medication, please call our Wellness Member Assistance Program at (646) 473-6900, and a trained healthcare professional will talk with you and recommend available treatment options.

There is no need to worry about your privacy; all conversations will be kept strictly confidential.

Moreover, we are working with our pharmacy benefit manager, Express Scripts, and our network of participating providers to deliver quality care with limited exposure to treatments and drugs that carry the risk of addiction.

The program adheres to New York State law, limiting the prescription of opioids in the initial treatment of acute pain to a 7-day supply. This program does not apply to members who are being treated for cancer or receiving palliative care and end-of-life care.

Important Changes to Prescription Pain Medication Policy As the dangers associated with the use of prescription painkillers reach epidemic levels nationally, the 1199SEIU Benefit Funds are working hard to protect you and your family. As of October 1, 2017, we have joined with Express Scripts in a member safety program focused on pain management while lowering the threat of opioid addiction, which can often be fatal. The Express Scripts Advanced Opioid Management program follows New York State law, which limits first-time prescriptions of opioids for people dealing with severe pain to a 7-day supply.

The program does not affect patients who receive pain management therapy due to cancer care or hospice care (palliative care and end-of-life care).

Your Rights Under the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act If you are battling breast cancer, your 1199SEIU Benefit Fund is here to support you every step of the way. Your health benefits give you access to quality oncology care with many of the top cancer treatment centers in the New York metropolitan area, so you won’t have to go outside of your network for care.

Your Benefit Fund also provides coverage for reconstructive surgery, prostheses and other mastectomy-related services.

According to your doctor’s treatment plan, you are covered for: • Reconstruction of the breast on which a mastectomy was performed; • Surgery and reconstruction of the other breast to achieve a symmetrical appearance; • Prostheses; and • Treatment for physical complications associated with all stages of the mastectomy, including lymphedemas.

Stephania Henry When a serious bout of the flu landed her in the emergency room last year, Stephania Henry received a stark reminder of the value of her healthcare benefits.

As a Home Care Worker for the past six years, at both Cooperative Home Care Associates in the Bronx and Home Care Services for Independent Living in Brooklyn, Stephania Henry sees the importance of good health—and the consequences of poor health— on a daily basis. To protect her own health, she eats right, exercises regularly, gets an annual checkup and attends Benefit Fund health fairs to have her blood sugar level and blood pressure checked.

But in early 2017, Stephania wasn’t feeling like herself.

As a cold steadily worsened into a severe cough, fever, body aches, headaches and upset stomach, she became so weak that she had to go to the emergency room.

Fortunately, the doctors there told her she would get well with medication, nutrition and lots of rest.

“I would have been in serious trouble if it weren’t for my 1199SEIU health benefits,” Stephania said. “It meant everything to me that I was able to become healthy again and get back to work.”

Stephania is back to her regular routine, working and taking care of herself, but she’s thankful to know that she has the health coverage to get the care she needs, when she needs it. “I never want to go through something like that again,” she said, “but I know that if I did, I have my health benefits and could go straight to the doctor. That’s such a huge comfort.”

La Adicción a los Analgésicos es Común:

Lo que Necesita Saber Cada vez más pacientes reciben recetas a largo plazo para analgésicos potentes llamados opiáceos, como oxicodona, codeína y morfina, con el fin de combatir el dolor agudo y crónico. De 1999 a 2014, la cantidad de opiáceos recetados se ha cuadruplicado. Este aumento ha ocasionado serios problemas de adicción en los Estados Unidos y representa una peligrosa amenaza para los trabajadores de la salud, que a menudo realizan tareas físicas y en ocasiones deben mover pacientes o levantar objetos pesados, lo que aumenta la probabilidad de que experimenten dolor crónico.

This is a welfare benefit plan offering life insurance, health, dental, vision and prescription drug benefits. The annual report has been filed with the Employee Benefits Security Administration, as required under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA).

Basic Financial Statement The value of plan assets, after subtracting liabilities of the plan, was $226,005,462 as of December 31, 2016, compared to $195,080,107 as of January 1, 2016. During the plan year, the plan experienced an increase in its net assets of $30,925,355. This change includes unrealized appreciation and depreciation in the value of the plan assets; that is, the difference between the value of the plan’s assets at the end of the year and the value of the assets at the beginning of the year, or the cost of assets acquired during the year. During the plan year, the plan had total income of $240,024,679, including employer contributions of $229,533,775, COBRA payments of $58,593, member premiums of $9,704,298 and other earnings of $728,013.

Plan expenses were $209,099,324. These expenses included $10,844,236 in administrative expenses, $196,720,136 in benefits paid to participants and beneficiaries, $1,521,300 in general expenses and $13,652 in investment expenses.
