Message from the Executive Director Dear Members, If you have been reading For Your Benefit regularly, you know that staying healthy requires more than simply visiting your doctor for your checkup or when you are sick. In this issue, our Chief Medical Officer, Dr.Van H. Dunn, weighs in on the vital importance of staying current with preventive screenings in order to catch conditions or cancers early, before they become life-threatening. And because we are always looking for the most effective—and convenient—ways to help our members stay healthy, you will learn about a new, non-invasive, highly effective procedure for colon cancer screening that we hope many of you will take advantage of.

The National Benefit Fund believes it is a “grandfathered health plan” under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (the “Affordable Care Act”). Get the Most Out of Your Tax Refund with the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Take advantage of our free Tax Preparation Assistance Program For years, the 1199SEIU Benefit Fund’s Tax Preparation Assistance Program has been available to help you claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and get the most out of your tax return. The EITC is not a refund—it is additional money from the government in the form of a tax credit. The program has served thousands of members, and in 2017, the Fund is again partnering with the NYC Coalition during the city’s annual Tax Season Initiative to help you get your taxes prepared accurately and make sure your refund includes everything you’re entitled to. The NYC Coalition is led by the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs’ Office of Financial Empowerment, and includes the Food Bank For New York City and the nonprofit financial education program Ariva.

Visit a Food Bank For New York City or Ariva Site for Free Tax Preparation As long as your 2016 household income was below $54,000 (or $30,000 if you are single and have no dependents), our partners at the Food Bank For New York City are offering free tax preparation events at sites throughout the five boroughs. The Food Bank For New York City also offers the Virtual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (Virtual VITA) program for convenient electronic filing (e-filing) at various locations.You are eligible to use Virtual VITA if your 2016 household income was $54,000 or less, whether you have dependents or not.

The nonprofit financial education program Ariva is also offering free tax assistance at sites throughout the five boroughs. In order to receive assistance at Ariva’s sites, your 2016 household income must be below $54,000 if you have dependent children or below $30,000 if you are single and have no dependents. If you qualify for the EITC, the tax experts onsite will help you file for the credit. Even if you don’t live near a Food Bank For New York City or Ariva site, be sure to check the “Claim Your EITC” guide below to find out whether you qualify for the credit before filing your return.

Get Your Copy of The Benefit Fund Works Our 2017 Protecting with Your Doctors to Our Health Calendar Improve Your Care As the way people in the U.S. access their healthcare continues to change, your Benefit Fund is working closely with our participating providers to improve your care, most recently through the creation of Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). As you may know, an ACO is a group or network of doctors who work together to help ensure patients receive the best possible care. In 2014, we entered into our first ACO agreement with Montefiore Medical Center, and in January 2016, we partnered with the Union and Northwell Health (formerly the North Shore-LIJ Health System) to create our second ACO. We will soon launch new partnerships with the Mount Sinai Health System and AdvantageCare Physicians.

The Benefit Fund’s 2017 Protecting Our Health calendar is available now! The calendar features nutrition, fitness and lifestyle tips to help you and your family make healthy, lasting changes.You’ll also find monthly reminders about the Benefit Fund’s wellness workshops and other resources. Copies of the calendar were already mailed to members who attended worksite wellness fairs or other wellness workshops in 2016.You can get your copy by attending any of our Wellness Department’s upcoming health fairs, wellness workshops or other events. We hope you will use your 2017 calendar to help you set and keep track of your health goals all year round!

What does this mean for you? If you receive most of your healthcare services from Mount Sinai providers, for example, or from any group with whom we partner in the future, you will be automatically enrolled in their 1199SEIU ACO program. We will send you a letter that explains how the program works.You will have a care management team of nurses, pharmacists, social workers and health educators who can work together to create a personalized plan to help you manage a chronic condition, recover from a serious illness, or transition back home or to another setting after a hospital stay. These healthcare providers will be able to access specific information—such as the dates you visited a doctor or hospital, the treatment you received, any tests or screenings you underwent and the prescriptions you received—which can eliminate duplicate medical tests and referrals, and helps ensure you get the care you need when you need it.

Your healthcare benefits will not change, and you can opt out of the program at any time by calling our Member Services Department at (646) 473-9200. All of your information is protected under regulations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and the only people who see it are your healthcare providers.

A Message from Dr. Van H. Dunn, Chief Medical Officer Preventive screenings can help stave off more serious illness—and may save your life.

As Chief Medical Officer at the Benefit Fund, my primary goal is to help keep you healthy, and preventive screenings are one of the best ways to make that goal a reality.

Since I began my career as a primary care physician at a community hospital, I have counseled patients, friends, family members and anyone else who cared to listen on the value of preventive screenings. Now, as Chief Medical Officer at the Benefit Fund, my primary goal is to help keep you healthy, and preventive screenings are one of the best ways to make that goal a reality.

Cancer screenings are the most effective tool to catch almost every type of cancer before the disease has had a chance to spread to a life-threatening stage, yet far too often, folks “forget” to schedule an appointment or are put off by the inconvenience or discomfort that accompanies some preventive screening procedures. The reason for any cancer screening is to identify, treat or remove precancerous cells, period. And a little discomfort or a few hours of your time is a small price to pay. Likewise, cholesterol and blood sugar screenings are designed to identify warning signs long before they have a chance to become chronic conditions like heart disease or diabetes.

Preventive screenings are important, just like the immunizations that protect you from the measles, mumps, rubella, malaria and other illnesses, so they should be part of your annual routine to protect your health and see your primary care doctor. If it so happens that you are due for a screening, your doctor can even let you know. And when that happens, by all means, do not put it off: Early detection can mean the difference between treating a condition in its early stages and facing a more serious and potentially life-threatening illness.

“One Call” Radiology Network Offers More Choices MedFocus Radiology Network, the Benefit Fund’s preferred provider for radiology and imaging services, is now part of One Call Care Management. This new partnership will give you access to a broader network of quality radiology providers. Remember, prior authorization is required for some radiological tests, such as MRI, MRA, PET scans, CAT scans and certain nuclear cardiology tests, so be sure your doctor calls (888) 910-1199 to receive approval. New Colon Cancer Screening Can Save Your Life No one looks forward to having a colonoscopy, but it has proven to be a lifesaving tool that doctors use to help detect colon cancer, which is highly treatable if caught early.

Unfortunately, many 1199ers who should get screened don’t: Our colon cancer screening rate is 44 percent, compared with the national rate of 58 percent. A screening can catch colon cancer early, before it becomes difficult to treat.

Treatment for late-stage colon cancer often includes surgery, chemotherapy and radiation—and does not have a high survival rate. It doesn’t have to be that way. If caught early, treatment typically involves removal of polyps or the affected area, followed by regular monitoring. And now, there is a new procedure available—covered by your Benefit Fund—that is convenient, non-invasive and effective in identifying cancer and precancerous cells. The Cologuard Collection Kit is an easy-to-use, at-home colon cancer screening test that requires no special preparation, diet or medication changes.You won’t even have to take time off from work.

So if you’re over age 50 and you’ve been hesitating about getting screened, talk to your doctor today. If you are a good candidate for the test, your doctor will write you a prescription for the test and a Cologuard Collection Kit will be shipped to your home. You collect a stool sample and mail it to a lab in the prepaid, pre-addressed box. The lab will then send results to your doctor within two weeks.

Of course, the Cologuard test is not right for everyone, and is not meant to be a replacement for a traditional colonoscopy if you are at high risk for colon cancer, or have a family history or a personal history of colon cancer, polyps or other diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, chronic ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease that place you at risk for colon cancer.

Marlowe Smith and Jesse Cruz Marlowe Smith’s health scare led to a friendship with fellow member Jesse Cruz, and the two have been staying strong and fit together ever since.

About a year and a half ago, at the age of 28, Marlowe Smith had an infection in his esophagus that made it difficult to swallow, eat and perform his daily duties as a Dietary Supply Worker at Montefiore Medical Center. After a few weeks, his condition worsened, and he went to his primary care doctor and learned that he had also developed pneumonia.

“It was quite a scare,” Marlowe said. “But I knew that because of my healthcare benefits, I wouldn’t have to worry about the finances, which reduced the stress and helped me focus on healing.”

The infection in his esophagus required that he maintain a liquid diet for four months, and Marlowe lost almost 50 pounds, leaving him weakened and worried about his health. Throughout the ordeal, he talked with co-worker Jesse Cruz, also a Dietary Supply Worker, about his anxiety over the dramatic weight loss, and the two became friends. At the end of the four months, Marlowe’s pneumonia was treated, the infection eventually cleared, and his doctor told him he could resume his normal eating habits. Jesse encouraged Marlowe to start working out with him, and Marlowe took him up on the offer.

Today, Marlowe is a fit and muscular 200 pounds, and he still works out with Jesse three or four times a week. For his part, Jesse—who is 37 years old and the father of 8-year-old and 6-month-old daughters— said that helping Marlowe motivated him to make more time for exercise as well. Jesse had maintained an active lifestyle after playing sports in high school and entering the workforce. But when he began working full time at Montefiore shortly after he and his girlfriend had their first child, he began to slack off a bit. “With a newborn, I stopped lifting weights at the gym and eventually stopped working out altogether for a while,” he said. “I gained some weight, couldn’t run as well as I had been able to and just generally had less energy.”

Eventually, Jesse found his way back into a routine and had been working out regularly again when he saw Marlowe struggling with his health issues.

Fortunately, they had similar schedules, so they started an exercise regimen together at a nearby park and

at the local gym. Both said that having a partner is helpful in many ways: to stay motivated on days when one of them doesn’t feel like working out, to push each other when they’re lifting weights or running together, and to help each other remain committed to another component of healthy living—a balanced and nutritious diet.

Both Marlowe and Jesse confessed to having a sweet tooth and said they had to make dietary changes and watch portion sizes much more carefully as they’ve gotten older. Jesse said he almost never eats fast food or junk food anymore but allows himself one day a week to indulge in something sweet, like a few chocolate chip cookies. Marlowe said he’s nearly eliminated soda and drinks lots of water. He also counts calories every day, has made the switch from white to whole-wheat bread and has stopped snacking late at night. But, he said, these changes would not have been possible without the support of his friend. “Having a partner helps me stay motivated even when we’re not together,” Marlowe said. “So I can skip that snack, have a nice cold glass of water and not feel guilty or sluggish at our next workout.”

Learn Everything You Need to Know About Retirement at Our Pension Workshops If you are thinking about retiring, you can learn what to expect by joining us at our next Pension Benefit Information Session and Getting Ready for Retirement workshop held at Fund Headquarters in Manhattan.

Join us at one of our Pension Benefit Information Sessions, where you will learn all about your defined benefit pension and receive an estimate of what your monthly pension will be. Our Pension Fund staff will walk you through the entire application process, from deciding on a retirement date to collecting your first pension check. If you are thinking of retiring soon, we encourage you to come to this session and schedule an appointment with a Pension Counselor. Counselors can also help you navigate additional retirement resources, such as the Social Security Administration and Medicare, and will even help you fill out your pension application to make sure it’s complete and accurate.

If you’re curious about what the transition to retired life will be like, come to one of our Getting Ready for Retirement workshops. Staff members from the Wellness Member Assistance Program will be on hand to answer your questions and provide information and resources to help you prepare for this major life change.

Representatives from our Retired Members Division will also be available to offer tips on how to stay active with your 1199SEIU retirees through numerous classes, chapter meetings and other monthly events, such as Seniors Out Speaking. Linda Beth Lawson Linda Beth Lawson fully embraces our 1199SEIU retirees’ motto of being “Retired but Active” and credits her ability to do many of the things she loves to her monthly pension benefit.

With hobbies that include line dancing and playing the violin and the clarinet, Linda Beth Lawson knows that she needs to stay healthy to maintain her active lifestyle. Fortunately, she eats a nutritious diet and doesn’t have to worry about the few extra dollars that fresh fruit and vegetables may cost her. “Without my pension, I’d be lost,” she said. “I can tell you from experience that eating healthy foods costs more than eating junk food, and Social Security alone would leave me without any choice.”

Linda Beth, who retired from Interfaith Medical Center as a Registration Clerk in 2011, enjoys the extra time she has to spend with her son and her daughter. A Brooklyn resident for 37 years, she participates in many of the activities at the retiree chapter near her home and also makes regular visits to the Retired Members Department at the Benefit and Pension Funds’ Manhattan Headquarters. Her defined benefit pension, she said, has allowed her to remain in her home. “If I didn’t have my pension, I don’t even know where I’d call home,” Linda Beth said. “We truly have the best benefits around, and I don’t know how I’d survive without them.”

ANNE SHORE SLEEP-AWAY CAMP PROGRAM

Give Your Child an Experience to Remember!

Registration is now open for the 1199SEIU/Employer Child Care Corporation Anne Shore Sleep-Away Camp Program.

Sleep-away camp is a great way for your child to learn independence, responsibility, and new skills and hobbies. Your child may be eligible to attend the program if you have family coverage (Wage or Eligibility Class I) through your Benefit Fund and your child is between the ages of 9 and 15.

At the Anne Shore Sleep-Away Camp Program, children attend two- to four-week summer sleep-away camps located across the Northeast. The 1199SEIU/Employer Child Care Corporation administers the program, offering a variety of camp options so that parents are able to select the best summer experience for their child. Diverse offerings include academic, technology, sports, arts and traditional camps. Camps for children with disabilities or special needs are also available.

All camps that participate in the Anne Shore Sleep-Away Camp Program are independently owned and operated, and are accredited by the American Camp Association. The Child Care Corporation staff of the Anne Shore Sleep-Away Camp Program does everything it can to help ensure that the camp providers offered to 1199SEIU members are among the best camps to choose from.

Attending College in Academic Year 2017–2018?

Request the Joseph Tauber Scholarship Application The Joseph Tauber Scholarship Program offers scholarships to children of eligible 1199SEIU members who are attending accredited undergraduate programs. Eligible members are those whose employers contribute to the National Benefit Fund or the Greater New York Child Care Fund. Members must have been receiving Wage Class I or Eligibility Class I benefits for at least one year. Candidates must be high school graduates, post-secondary school students or previous awardees enrolled full time for a minimum of 12 credits each semester. All candidates must be younger than 23 years of age by September 1, 2017. Previous awardees seeking scholarship support should note that automatic award renewals are not granted; you must reapply each year for consideration.

To request an application for the Joseph Tauber Scholarship Program, provide your information below and submit it before January 31, 2017. Mensaje del Dr. Van H. Dunn, Director Médico Ejecutivo Los exámenes de detección preventivos pueden ayudar a prevenir enfermedades graves, y pueden salvar su vida.

Como Director Médico Ejecutivo del Fondo de Beneficios, mi objetivo principal es ayudar a que usted se mantenga saludable, y una de las mejores maneras de que ese objetivo se cumpla es a través de los exámenes de detección preventivos.

Desde que comencé mi carrera como médico de atención primaria en un hospital comunitario, he aconsejado a pacientes, amigos, familiares y a cualquiera que quisiese escuchar sobre el valor de los exámenes de detección preventivos. Actualmente, como Director Médico Ejecutivo del Fondo de Beneficios, mi objetivo principal es ayudar a que usted se mantenga saludable, y una de las mejores maneras de que ese objetivo se cumpla es a través de los exámenes de detección preventivos.

Los exámenes de detección de cáncer constituyen la herramienta más eficaz para identificar casi cualquier tipo de cáncer antes de que la enfermedad pueda extenderse hasta alcanzar una fase potencialmente mortal. Sin embargo, sucede muy a menudo que la gente “olvida” programar una consulta o la postergan por la molestia o incomodidad que acompaña a algunos procedimientos de detección preventivos. La razón para realizar cualquier examen de detección de cáncer es identificar, tratar o eliminar células precancerosas. Punto. Unas molestias o unas horas de su tiempo son un precio bastante bajo a pagar por esto. De la misma manera, los exámenes para determinar los niveles de colesterol y de azúcar en sangre están diseñados para identificar señales de alerta mucho antes de que puedan volverse afecciones crónicas, como una enfermedad cardíaca o diabetes.

Los exámenes de detección preventivos son importantes, al igual que las vacunas lo protegen del sarampión, las paperas, la rubéola, la malaria y otras enfermedades. Por eso, deberían ser parte de su rutina anual para proteger su salud y consultar a su médico de atención primaria. Si debe hacerse un examen de detección, su médico puede decírselo.Y si esto sucede, no lo posponga por nada: la detección temprana puede significar la diferencia entre tratar una enfermedad en su fase temprana y afrontar una afección más grave que puede resultar mortal.

La Red de Radiología “One Call” Ofrece Más Opciones La Red de Radiología de MedFocus, el proveedor preferido del Fondo de Beneficios en el área de radiología y servicios de diagnóstico por imágenes, ahora forma parte de One Call Care Management. Esta nueva asociación le proporcionará acceso a una red más amplia de proveedores de radiología de calidad.

Los Nuevos Exámenes de Detección de Cáncer de Colon Pueden Salvar Su Vida Nadie espera con ansias una colonoscopía, pero está demostrado que esta herramienta puede salvar vidas, ya que es utilizada por los médicos para ayudar a detectar cáncer de colon, que puede tratarse si se toma a tiempo. Lamentablemente, muchos miembros de 1199 que deberían hacerse exámenes de detección no lo hacen: nuestro índice de realización de exámenes de detección de cáncer de colon es de 44 por ciento, en comparación con el índice nacional del 58 por ciento. Un examen de detección puede identificar temprano el cáncer de colon, antes de que sea difícil tratarlo. El tratamiento para el cáncer de colon en etapa avanzada a menudo implica cirugía, quimioterapia y radiación, y su tasa de supervivencia no es muy elevada. Esto no debería ser así. Si se detecta a tiempo, el tratamiento generalmente consta de la extracción de pólipos en el área afectada, seguida de controles regulares. Ni siquiera deberá interrumpir su trabajo.

Por eso, si es mayor de 50 años y ha estado dudando sobre hacerse el examen de detección, hable hoy con su médico.

Si es buen candidato para el análisis, el médico le hará una indicación para la prueba y le enviaremos a su hogar un Kit de Recolección Cologuard. Debe recolectar una muestra de heces y enviarla a un laboratorio en la caja prepagada que ya contiene la dirección. El laboratorio le enviará los resultados a su médico al cabo de dos semanas.

Claro está, el Kit de Recolección Cologuard no es adecuado para todos, y no debe considerarse un reemplazo de la colonoscopía tradicional si corre riesgo de desarrollar cáncer de colon o tiene antecedentes familiares o personales de cáncer de colon, pólipos u otras afecciones, como la enfermedad inflamatoria del intestino, la colitis ulcerosa crónica o la enfermedad de Crohn, que predisponen la aparición de cáncer de colon.

Marlowe Smith y Jesse Cruz El susto sobre su salud que tuvo Marlowe Smith lo llevó a entablar una amistad con otro miembro, Jesse Cruz, y ambos se han mantenido fuertes y en forma desde entonces.

Hace aproximadamente un año y medio, cuando tenía 28 años, Marlowe Smith tuvo una infección en el esófago que le dificultaba tragar, comer y realizar sus actividades diarias en el área de Suministros Dietéticos de Montefiore Medical Center. Después de algunas semanas, su estado empeoró y consultó a su médico de atención primaria. Descubrió que también tenía neumonía. “Me asusté mucho”, dijo Marlowe. “Pero sabía que, como contaba con beneficios de salud, no tendría que preocuparme por lo económico. Esto redujo el nivel de estrés y me permitió enfocarme en mi curación”.

La infección en el esófago lo obligó a seguir una dieta líquida durante cuatro meses, y Marlowe perdió casi 50 libras. Esto lo debilitó e hizo que se preocupara por su salud. Mientras atravesaba esta experiencia, hablaba acerca de su preocupación por su extrema pérdida de peso con su compañero de trabajo, Jesse Cruz, quien también trabaja en el área de Suministros Dietéticos, y se hicieron amigos. Ambos expresaron que tener un compañero ayuda de muchas maneras: para mantener la motivación en los días en que uno no tiene ganas de hacer ejercicio, para alentarse mutuamente cuando están levantando pesas o corriendo juntos, y para ayudarse a continuar comprometidos con otro componente de una vida sana: una dieta nutritiva y equilibrada.

Tanto Marlowe como Jesse confesaron ser fanáticos de los dulces, y señalaron que tuvieron que hacer cambios en la dieta y controlar los tamaños de las porciones más cuidadosamente a medida que pasan los años. Jesse explicó que ya casi nunca come comida rápida o chatarra, pero que se permite darse un gusto un día a la semana con algo dulce, como unas galletas con chips de chocolate. Marlowe manifestó que casi eliminó por completo los refrescos y que toma mucha agua. También cuenta las calorías cada día, cambió de pan blanco a pan integral y dejó los refrigerios nocturnos. Sin embargo, aclaró que estos cambios no hubiesen sido posibles sin el apoyo de su amigo. “Tener un compañero me ayuda a permanecer motivado incluso cuando no estamos juntos”, agregó Marlowe. “Así puedo evitar los refrigerios, tomar un buen vaso de agua fresca y no sentirme culpable o flojo en la próxima sesión de ejercicios”.

Ya se encuentran abiertas las inscripciones para el Programa de Campamento de Estadía Anne Shore de la Corporación de Cuidado Infantil de 1199SEIU/Empleador.

El campamento de estadía es una excelente manera para que su hijo adquiera independencia y responsabilidad y aprenda nuevas habilidades y pasatiempos. Su hijo puede ser elegible para asistir al programa si usted tiene cobertura familiar (Salario o Elegibilidad de Clase I) a través de su Fondo de Beneficios y su hijo tiene entre 9 y 15 años.

En el Programa de Campamento de Estadía Anne Shore, los niños asisten a campamentos de estadía de dos a cuatro semanas en verano en el noreste. La Corporación de Cuidado Infantil de 1199SEIU/Empleador administra el programa y ofrece una variedad de opciones de campamentos para que los padres puedan seleccionar la mejor experiencia de verano para su hijo. Entre las diferentes ofertas, se incluyen campamentos académicos, de tecnología, deportes, arte y también tradicionales. También hay disponibles campamentos especiales para niños con discapacidades o necesidades especiales.

El Programa de Becas Joseph Tauber está disponible para hijos de miembros elegibles de 1199SEIU que asisten a programas universitarios de pregrado acreditados. Plan expenses were $176,928,583. These expenses included $13,913,217 in administrative and general expenses, $163,008,206 in benefits paid to participants and beneficiaries, and $7,160 in investment and advisor fees.
