We all make New Year’s resolutions, but following through on them can be a challenge. As we begin 2012, we hope you will use the resources your Fund provides to make lasting healthy changes. In this issue of For Your Benefit, you will find plenty of information on how to keep yourself and your family healthy despite the icy winter weather, from healthy heart guidelines to common nutrition myths, timelines for common medical screenings and ideas for working out in the colder months. You will even read about how a member diagnosed with diabetes avoided insulin injections by exercising more and eating healthfully – a story we hope will inspire you to make some positive changes, too.

Of course, we have also included information about the benefits and services available to you through your Fund. First, we want to remind you that the next open enrollment period for spouses begins January 1.

You will also read about how you can access free or discounted tax preparation to help you get thousands of dollars more back in your refund, and camp and scholarship opportunities for your children.

This is a summary of the annual report for the 1199SEIU/Greater New York Child Care Fund, EIN 75-3086330, Plan Number 501, for the period January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2010. The annual report has been filed with the Department of Labor, as required under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA).

Basic Financial Statement The value of plan assets, after subtracting liabilities of the plan, was $597,162 as of December 31, 2010, compared to $450,891 as of January 1, 2010. During the plan year the plan experienced a change in its net assets of $146,271. This change includes unrealized appreciation or depreciation in the value of plan assets; that is, the difference between the value of the plan's assets at the end of the year and the value of the assets at the beginning of the year or the cost of assets acquired during the year. The plan had total income of $2,910,628, which included employer contributions of $2,871,182, employee contributions of $38,402, gain/loss of $0 from the sale of assets, and earnings from investments of $1,404.

Total plan expenses were $2,764,357. These expenses included $741,540 in administrative expenses and $2,022,817 in benefits paid to participants and beneficiaries, and $0 in other expenses.

Insurance Information The plan has a contract with Amalgamated Life Insurance Company to pay certain life insurance claims incurred under the terms of the plan. The total premiums paid for the plan year ending December 31, 2010, were $66,165.

Because it is a so-called “experience-rated” contract, the premium costs are affected by, among other things, the number and size of claims. Of the total insurance premiums paid for the plan year ending December 31, 2010, the premiums paid under such “experience-rated” contracts were $873,373 and the total of all benefit claims paid under the experience-rated contract during the plan year was $779,802.

During the plan year the plan experienced a decrease in its net assets of $13,374,514. Greater New York Spousal Open Enrollment Period Starts January 1 If you want to enroll your spouse in the Greater New York Benefit Fund healthcare plan, the open enrollment period begins January 1 and runs through January 31 for coverage effective March 1, 2012. Members pay a $30 weekly premium for spousal coverage. (Members hired after January 1, 2011, must pay a $60 weekly premium to cover their spouses for their first five years of employment. After that, the amount will drop to $30 per week.) If you have already enrolled your spouse, you do not have to do anything.

In order to enroll your spouse, you must complete a Spouse Enrollment and Paycheck Deduction

Authorization Form authorizing your employer to deduct your weekly premium from your paycheck, and return it to your employer before February 1.

A Doctor’s Warnings Take Hold Rainford doesn’t need insulin, thanks to a healthier diet and daily walks.

Rainford Rhooms was diagnosed with diabetes 10 years ago, but despite being told by his doctor how serious his condition was, he didn’t change any of his habits right away. In fact, it took several more years – and the threat of needing daily doses of insulin – for him to begin to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

“I’d been going to my doctor regularly. He told me last summer that my blood sugar levels were getting much worse,” Rainford said. “If I didn’t get healthier, I’d have to do something I knew I didn’t want to do – start injecting insulin just to function.”

Rainford knew he didn’t want to start taking insulin and began to change his diet right away, first by eliminating red meat and limiting his favorite guilty pleasure – sweet snacks. He also remembered attending a health fair at St. Joseph’s Hospital a few years ago and being given a copy of What’s Cooking – the 1199SEIU cookbook with healthy recipes from members and retirees – so he decided to dig it out. Soon, Rainford and his wife started making more nutritious dishes at their home in the Bronx.

“The cookbook helped me become more aware, and we tried a few of the dishes,” he said. “Even though we don’t use lots of recipes right out of the book, it’s helped me learn what types of ingredients are good for me and what to watch out for.”

Rainford is a 57-year-old father of four, so his improved diet also serves as a positive example for his children, who range in age from 13 to 30. He and his wife eat chicken, fish and vegetables nearly every day at home.When he’s working – where once there was a steady diet of fast food and fatty snacks – he now brings from home lunches of lean meats or fish on whole-wheat bread, and fresh fruit for snacks between meals.

Rather than taking a bus to the front door of Crown Nursing Home in Brooklyn, where he works in the housekeeping department, he often walks the half-mile to a mile from the train station, and the trek has helped improve his stamina and strengthen his legs.

An 1199er for 16 years, Rainford said his strategy of taking advantage of his benefits, combined with the Funds’ emphasis on building a culture of health, has served him well. He said if it weren’t for having the health coverage that allows him to see his family doctor regularly, the effects of his diabetes would certainly have been worse.

With all the conflicting nutrition advice floating around on the Internet, in magazines and in lose-weight-fast diet books, it can be hard to tell fact from fiction. So we got to the bottom of some of the most common nutritional myths to help keep you ahead of the curve and on the track to healthy eating.

Myth: Skipping meals isn’t really so bad for me.

Reality: You might think that skipping meals will help you lose weight, but studies show that people accumulate more body fat when they eat fewer, larger meals instead of smaller, more frequent meals. Skipping meals typically leads to eating more food than you need throughout the day and snacking on high-calorie foods to prevent hunger. Eating more frequently will help reduce bloating, control blood sugar and manage hunger. Snack on healthy foods like fruits or vegetables to make sure your body gets the energy it needs.

Myth: I’ll never lose weight unless I give up my favorite “bad” foods.

Reality:

While most cravings pass in about five minutes, research has shown that eating a healthy diet doesn’t mean you have to deprive yourself of your favorite foods – as long as you eat them in moderation and keep it to a now-and-then basis. So go ahead and have that brownie, but you might want to add an extra 15 minutes to your walk that day. Or give your favorite foods a healthy makeover. If you’re craving pizza, try making it at home so you can top it with nonfat cheese and use a whole-wheat crust. If you just have to have bacon, make it turkey bacon.

You’ll satisfy your craving without feeling deprived.

Myth:

If a food package says “all natural” on it, it has to be healthy for me.

Reality:

Even if something is labeled “all natural,” it can still contain high amounts of sugar, unsaturated fats or other ingredients that can derail your healthy diet. Some may even contain as much fat as a candy bar! To truly figure out whether a product is healthy, be sure to read the nutritional label – or better yet, opt for fresh fruit or vegetables.

Myth: If I eat mostly low-fat foods, I will lose weight.

Reality: Research has shown that a low-fat or reduced-fat food may actually have the same or more calories than the full-fat version of the food. This is because food manufacturers often replace fat with sugar.

Also, for many people, seeing the words “low-fat” or “fat-free” is a green light to overeat. So, control your portions and stick with a balanced diet, making sure you get the recommended amounts of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and dairy.

Myth:

Frozen fruits and vegetables are not as nutritious as fresh ones.

Reality:

Just-picked produce does have more vitamins and minerals, but nutrient levels drop during shipping and storage. Frozen fruits and vegetables can be just as healthy as fresh, if not more so, since they are picked and frozen right after harvest, preserving their nutrients.When buying frozen produce, remember to avoid those packaged in sauces, which only add sodium or sugar and calories.

Don’t Let Winter Put Your Exercise Routine on Ice During the winter months, the short days, icy temperatures and snow-covered streets can make sticking to your walking routine a challenge – but not impossible.When the weather refuses to cooperate, there are lots of ways you can keep up your walking or exercise routine inside.Try these suggestions and you won’t have to give back all the hard-earned gains you’ve made in the last several months. Because as you probably know, staying fit is a lot easier than getting fit.

• Take the stairs at work rather than using the elevator. If your building has stairwells that don’t allow you to re-enter on every floor, you can start by walking up a few flights and taking the elevator the rest of the way. After a while, you’ll probably be able to climb several flights of stairs without feeling winded and you’ll notice the muscles in your legs firming up. Add a floor per week, as you feel ready, and come spring you’ll be more than ready to move your routine back outside.

• Walk on a treadmill. If you already belong to a fitness club, now’s the time to get back into the routine of going to the gym. Using a treadmill lets you walk at your own pace, and as you build up your stamina, you can walk faster, increase your distance or add inclines. • Go to the mall early in the morning and walk a few laps inside before the stores open. Of course, you can do this on your own, but mall walking has become a popular cold-weather activity and you may be able to find a group in your area. Or recruit friends and family members to join you and start a group of your own.

• March in place or do household chores while watching TV, especially during commercials. Stand and walk in place, lifting your knees to waist level. Remember, consistency is more important than endurance – keep at it for a few weeks and you’ll feel the difference.

• If you do head outside, dress in layers to protect yourself against the cold. Exercise generates a lot of body heat, and wearing several layers of clothing will keep you from catching a chill when your sweat dries. Start with a shirt made from synthetic material so your sweat will be drawn away from your body. Then add a cotton top and a fleece or wool coat. And pay extra attention to your extremities, making sure you keep your hands, feet, ears and head warm.

Healthy Heart Basics Did you know that heart disease is the numberone cause of death in men and women in the U.S.? In fact, the American Heart Association estimates that more than 64 million people in the U.S. have one or more forms of cardiovascular disease.

It sounds obvious, but a healthy heart is essential to living a healthy, fulfilling life. And the way to a healthy heart is by eating well, exercising and avoiding harmful behaviors like smoking and drinking alcohol in excess. Our heart, a single muscle no bigger than a fist, performs the most critical life-sustaining service by pumping oxygenrich blood throughout the body so that all of its intricate systems and organs work well together and we feel good.

If we eat unhealthy foods that compromise our heart’s function, it has to struggle to perform its job and we end up feeling ill and increasing our risk of serious chronic conditions and disease.

Too many “bad” fats clog our arteries and lead to hypertension, high cholesterol and obesity. Too many high-sugar, processed foods lead to diabetes.

We suffer the same poor health symptoms when we don’t exercise. And if we smoke, we dramatically increase our risk for cancer, hypertension, asthma, heart disease, heart attacks and strokes.

Hace 10 años a Rainford Rhooms le diagnosticaron la diabetes, pero pese a que su médico le dijo lo grave que era su enfermedad, él no cambió sus hábitos de inmediato. Healthy Heart Basics Did you know that heart disease is the numberone cause of death in men and women in the U.S.? In fact, the American Heart Association estimates that more than 64 million people in the U.S. have one or more forms of cardiovascular disease.

It sounds obvious, but a healthy heart is essential to living a healthy, fulfilling life. And the way to a healthy heart is by eating well, exercising and avoiding harmful behaviors like smoking and drinking alcohol in excess. Our heart, a single muscle no bigger than a fist, performs the most critical life-sustaining service by pumping oxygenrich blood throughout the body so that all of its intricate systems and organs work well together and we feel good.

If we eat unhealthy foods that compromise our heart’s function, it has to struggle to perform its job and we end up feeling ill and increasing our risk of serious chronic conditions and disease.

Too many “bad” fats clog our arteries and lead to hypertension, high cholesterol and obesity. Too many high-sugar, processed foods lead to diabetes.

We suffer the same poor health symptoms when we don’t exercise. And if we smoke, we dramatically increase our risk for cancer, hypertension, asthma, heart disease, heart attacks and strokes.

Don’t Let Winter Put Your Exercise Routine on Ice During the winter months, the short days, icy temperatures and snow-covered streets can make sticking to your walking routine a challenge – but not impossible.When the weather refuses to cooperate, there are lots of ways you can keep up your walking or exercise routine inside.Try these suggestions and you won’t have to give back all the hard-earned gains you’ve made in the last several months. Because as you probably know, staying fit is a lot easier than getting fit.

• Take the stairs at work rather than using the elevator. If your building has stairwells that don’t allow you to re-enter on every floor, you can start by walking up a few flights and taking the elevator the rest of the way. After a while, you’ll probably be able to climb several flights of stairs without feeling winded and you’ll notice the muscles in your legs firming up. Add a floor per week, as you feel ready, and come spring you’ll be more than ready to move your routine back outside.

• Walk on a treadmill. If you already belong to a fitness club, now’s the time to get back into the routine of going to the gym. Using a treadmill lets you walk at your own pace, and as you build up your stamina, you can walk faster, increase your distance or add inclines. • Go to the mall early in the morning and walk a few laps inside before the stores open. Of course, you can do this on your own, but mall walking has become a popular cold-weather activity and you may be able to find a group in your area. Or recruit friends and family members to join you and start a group of your own.

• March in place or do household chores while watching TV, especially during commercials. Stand and walk in place, lifting your knees to waist level. Remember, consistency is more important than endurance – keep at it for a few weeks and you’ll feel the difference.

• If you do head outside, dress in layers to protect yourself against the cold. Exercise generates a lot of body heat, and wearing several layers of clothing will keep you from catching a chill when your sweat dries. Start with a shirt made from synthetic material so your sweat will be drawn away from your body. Then add a cotton top and a fleece or wool coat. And pay extra attention to your extremities, making sure you keep your hands, feet, ears and head warm.

With all the conflicting nutrition advice floating around on the Internet, in magazines and in lose-weight-fast diet books, it can be hard to tell fact from fiction. So we got to the bottom of some of the most common nutritional myths to help keep you ahead of the curve and on the track to healthy eating.

Myth: Skipping meals isn’t really so bad for me.

Reality: You might think that skipping meals will help you lose weight, but studies show that people accumulate more body fat when they eat fewer, larger meals instead of smaller, more frequent meals. Skipping meals typically leads to eating more food than you need throughout the day and snacking on high-calorie foods to prevent hunger. Eating more frequently will help reduce bloating, control blood sugar and manage hunger. Snack on healthy foods like fruits or vegetables to make sure your body gets the energy it needs.

Myth: I’ll never lose weight unless I give up my favorite “bad” foods.

Reality:

While most cravings pass in about five minutes, research has shown that eating a healthy diet doesn’t mean you have to deprive yourself of your favorite foods – as long as you eat them in moderation and keep it to a now-and-then basis. So go ahead and have that brownie, but you might want to add an extra 15 minutes to your walk that day. Or give your favorite foods a healthy makeover. If you’re craving pizza, try making it at home so you can top it with nonfat cheese and use a whole-wheat crust. If you just have to have bacon, make it turkey bacon.

You’ll satisfy your craving without feeling deprived.

Myth:

If a food package says “all natural” on it, it has to be healthy for me.

Reality:

Even if something is labeled “all natural,” it can still contain high amounts of sugar, unsaturated fats or other ingredients that can derail your healthy diet. Some may even contain as much fat as a candy bar! To truly figure out whether a product is healthy, be sure to read the nutritional label – or better yet, opt for fresh fruit or vegetables.

Myth: If I eat mostly low-fat foods, I will lose weight.

Reality: Research has shown that a low-fat or reduced-fat food may actually have the same or more calories than the full-fat version of the food. This is because food manufacturers often replace fat with sugar.

Also, for many people, seeing the words “low-fat” or “fat-free” is a green light to overeat. So, control your portions and stick with a balanced diet, making sure you get the recommended amounts of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and dairy.

Myth:

Frozen fruits and vegetables are not as nutritious as fresh ones.

Reality:

Just-picked produce does have more vitamins and minerals, but nutrient levels drop during shipping and storage. Frozen fruits and vegetables can be just as healthy as fresh, if not more so, since they are picked and frozen right after harvest, preserving their nutrients.When buying frozen produce, remember to avoid those packaged in sauces, which only add sodium or sugar and calories.

A Doctor’s Warnings Take Hold Rainford doesn’t need insulin, thanks to a healthier diet and daily walks.

Rainford Rhooms was diagnosed with diabetes 10 years ago, but despite being told by his doctor how serious his condition was, he didn’t change any of his habits right away. In fact, it took several more years – and the threat of needing daily doses of insulin – for him to begin to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

“I’d been going to my doctor regularly. He told me last summer that my blood sugar levels were getting much worse,” Rainford said. “If I didn’t get healthier, I’d have to do something I knew I didn’t want to do – start injecting insulin just to function.”

Rainford knew he didn’t want to start taking insulin and began to change his diet right away, first by eliminating red meat and limiting his favorite guilty pleasure – sweet snacks. He also remembered attending a health fair at St. Joseph’s Hospital a few years ago and being given a copy of What’s Cooking – the 1199SEIU cookbook with healthy recipes from members and retirees – so he decided to dig it out. Soon, Rainford and his wife started making more nutritious dishes at their home in the Bronx.

“The cookbook helped me become more aware, and we tried a few of the dishes,” he said. “Even though we don’t use lots of recipes right out of the book, it’s helped me learn what types of ingredients are good for me and what to watch out for.”

Rainford is a 57-year-old father of four, so his improved diet also serves as a positive example for his children, who range in age from 13 to 30. He and his wife eat chicken, fish and vegetables nearly every day at home.When he’s working – where once there was a steady diet of fast food and fatty snacks – he now brings from home lunches of lean meats or fish on whole-wheat bread, and fresh fruit for snacks between meals.

Greater New York Spousal Open Enrollment Period Starts January 1 If you want to enroll your spouse in the Greater New York Benefit Fund healthcare plan, the open enrollment period begins January 1 and runs through January 31 for coverage effective March 1, 2012. Members pay a $30 weekly premium for spousal coverage. (Members hired after January 1, 2011, must pay a $60 weekly premium to cover their spouses for their first five years of employment. After that, the amount will drop to $30 per week.) If you have already enrolled your spouse, you do not have to do anything.

In order to enroll your spouse, you must complete a Spouse Enrollment and Paycheck Deduction

Authorization Form authorizing your employer to deduct your weekly premium from your paycheck, and return it to your employer before February 1.
