A Brief History Owned by the Child’s family and subsequent Earls of Jersey until sold in 1981, the house itself is a perfect example of buildings of the period. Boasting many stand out features including high decorative ceilings, and period fireplaces. The stunning bay at the rear of the house with its curved windows creates a beautiful half-moon shape to the drawing room, master bedroom and further bedroom above.
From the moment you reach the driveway, you are met with the grandeur and nostalgia of Georgian England. The property has three acres of grounds which is divided into three areas. There is a one acre walled parterre garden given over mainly to old English roses but also containing a long pleached avenue, a croquet lawn and a labyrinth. The walls are built of the original Georgian bricks. Stands on land once owned by Sir Thomas Gresham, founder of the royal Exchange. Reputedly partly designed by legendary architect Robert Adam. Originally owned by Samuel Child, proprietor of child’s bank in Fleet Street, and subsequent of Earls of Jersey until sold in 1981. First occupied by the Child’s family steward. Briefly renamed ‘The Downer House’ believed to be because it housed Julia, Dowager Countess of Jersey after her husband’s death in 1859 until her re-marriage in 1965. Other occupiers include Thomas Jennings, estate farm’s bailiff (1798), Edward Poole, the market - gardener (1881) and Walter Bream, Lord Jersey’s head gamekeeper.
The house offers adaptable accommodation arranged over three floors. The ground floor has two fabulous reception rooms, a study, kitchen/breakfast room with utility room off. In 1919 became the home of Major the Hon. Carol Arthur Fellowes, who was an active socialite and during his time in residence is rumoured to have had frequent visits to the house by Binnie Hale, a famous actress and singer (of ‘Tea for two’ fame) at the time.
