This article is about gelato, which is one of a kind well loved Italian frozen dessert. Gelato looks very similar to an ice cream but they are different.

When I had gelato for my first time in my life, I would say it was a different world of frozen dessert for me. It had a rich texture with fresh flavour and also the topping on the gelato was really nice. I could feel that gelato is obviously different to normal icecream. So I have asked the staff that work at a local gelato shop.

“Is gelato different to ice cream?”

“Yes. Gelato is different to ice cream.”

The first difference between gelato and ice cream is the ingredients. Two of the main ingredients for both are milk and cream. The amount of these two ingredients make different results. Ice cream contains more cream than milk, but gelato is made with a perfect proportion of milk to cream. Ice cream also includes egg yolks in the process but gelato does not include egg yolks in general. These differing combinations of ingredients affect the amount of calories in them. It affects the texture of desserts as well and that is why I like gelato much more than a normal ice cream.

What do you imagine when you think about gelato shops?

For me, I imagine various flavours with different colours. I always have fruity flavours of gelato everytime I go to gelato shops, such as passionfruit, lemon, apple, strawberry and vanilla. They have non fruity flavours as well, like coffee, hazelnut, chocolate and tiramisu. Gelato contains pieces of fruit or topping in them and it really goes well with texture. You can also get them with a cup or cone. Here is my tip for having gelato from my own experience! You should get gelato in a cup in summer and in a cone in winter. Frozen desserts are vulnerable to heat so if you get gelato in a cone in summer, it is going to melt in your hand. But if you get gelato in a cup, it helps you to keep it a little bit longer than a cone.

In my personal opinion, the best part of gelato is texture. It is much more chewy than a normal ice cream and the topping in the gelato makes a richer texture. If you do not know what you should have, no need to worry at all. If you ask the staff for a testing spoon, they will provide you with a tiny spoon of gelato flavour you asked for. Plus, almost every gelato store has this system and every store I’ve been to has done it.

Next time you see a gelato shop, don’t just walk past it but try one yourself!
