Heart of the South Cariboo

The South Cariboo is a series of communities stretching along Highway 97 - from Clinton to Lac La Hache - and a string of scenic lakeside communities in between.

While many residents, seasonal residents and tourists may live or stay outside the boundaries of the District of 100 Mile House, they rely on the town for shopping, work, dining out and recreational activities. It’s big enough to have everything you might need but small enough for a sense of small-town camaraderie.

Along Birch Avenue, the town’s main shopping street, are several unique specialty stores, while familiar fast food options, restaurants and gas stations dot Highway 97, which runs through town.

To plan your trip, the South Cariboo Visitor Centre is the best place to start. Besides providing information on local sights and activities, the centre is also home to the original B.C. Express Stage Coach No. 14 - the only surviving coach of the Barnard Express and Stage Line - and the world’s largest pair of cross-country skis.

Take a walk around the 100 Mile Marsh beside the Visitor Centre to stretch your legs and see if you can match the birds to those listed on the signs installed along the path.

The South Cariboo Rec Centre hosts sporting activities and entertainment, while the Parkside Art Gallery is a mustsee for art aficionados. Beside the gallery is a StoryWalk and entrance to Centennial Park, which is a great place to take the family as it has waterfalls, a spray park, beach and hiking trails to keep everyone entertained.

Many summer events, such as Music in the Park, are also held here.

During the summer months, find unique artisan crafts and mouth-watering treats at the South Cariboo Farmers’ Market, held every Friday. During winter, check out the 100 Mile House Wranglers or bonspiels at the 100 Mile Curling Rink or have a skate on the outdoor rink.

A stop in 100 Mile House is well worth the visit at any time of year.

E-bike fun

Terry and Roxanne Ziefflie use their e-bikes on local trails and roads. They love the fact their bikes allow them to be active while providing a boost to get over hills.

Hop an e-bike to see the sights

Why not check “ride an electric bike” off of your bucket list? It’s slower than a car, allowing you to take in more sights, but is faster than walking, which means you can cover more ground.

The South Cariboo Visitor Centre offers e-bike tours that average 1.5 hours and take you through some of 100 Mile House’s most scenic and historic areas.

Along the ride, expect to visit the historic red stagecoach, which had travelled between Ashcroft and Prince George until 1915, when the stagecoach era ended. The B.C. Express Stage Coach No. 14 - located outside the visitor centre - was part of the Barnard Express Stage Line, used for transportation during the Cariboo Gold Rush.

Expect to see the 100 Mile Marsh, a small wetland perfect for birdwatching. You’ll also see some of 100 Mile House’s many murals around town.

If your legs get tired, take a break at Centennial Park, where you’ll find playgrounds, tennis courts, picnic areas and more. The 500-metre Bridge Creek Waterfall trail takes you across two wooden bridges before discovering the beautiful Bridge Creek Falls.

The e-bikes are all-weather bikes with fat tires, perfect for both paved and off-road surfaces.

The bikes can go up to 37 kms/hr, but don’t expect to go that fast, as two staff members – one at the front of the line and one at the back of the line – will safely guide you along the tour.

Helmets are provided, although you’re welcome to bring your own, too. Individuals over 16 years of age are welcome to participate.

Not only are e-bikes a fun way to provide a bit of exercise, but they also get people off of the highways and into a bit of nature. E-bikes have a clean footprint, making them an eco-friendly way to get around.

The South Cariboo Visitor Centre currently offers tours by appointment. It is also considering offering e-bike rentals for the summer months.

South of 100 Mile

Travelling south from 100 Mile House along Highway 97 will take you through 70 Mile House, Green Lake, Watch Lake and Clinton. The area offers exactly what you’d expect in the South Cariboo: stunning lakes, gold rush history and smalltown charm.

You’ll pass the Mt. Begbie Lookout, which is a brief hike up, after turning off the highway. On clear days, the lookout offers far-reaching views. In 70 Mile, Green Lake and Watch Lake you’ll find plenty of camping options, trail rides, retreats and resorts as well as a few dining options. The Cariboo Country Carriage Club also runs carriage and poker rides in 70 Mile at the Huber Farm.

From 70 Mile, you can also bike a section of the historic Cariboo Waggon Road.

Stunning Green Lake is a particularly popular swimming and boating destination. The area is home to Green Lake Provincial Park and, a bit further north on the opposite side of the highway, you’ll find Flat Lakes Provincial Park.

Clinton is deeply steeped in history, with a museum downtown as well as some unique specialty stores, dining opportunities and accommodation. Among its biggest claims to fame is the annual Clinton May Ball Rodeo and ball.

For more hiking and camping options within driving distance from Clinton, you’ll find the beautiful Marble Range, Downing Provincial Park, Big Bar Lake Provincial Park and Edge Hills Provincial Park (no motorized access). If you’re looking to stay closer to the main roads, the Chasm Provincial Park is well worth a stop, especially to view the Painted Chasm - where successive lava flows have formed layers in varying tones of red, brown, yellow and purple in the steep lava-layered canyon walls.

The trip south is perfect for a picture-postcard day.

The Fishing Highway

Heading east from 100 Mile House, along Highway 24 and Horse Lake Road, you’ll find Horse Lake, Lone Butte and the Interlakes. The area, with so many lakes, has been famously dubbed the Fishing Highway and most recently rebranded at The Land of Hidden Waters.

Lone Butte, a historic railway stop, was the highest elevation on the PGE line and that is still evident today from the Water Tower Park, which offers visitors a picnic stop, playground and rest area as well as a 1947 caboose and museum.

region, the area still provides a small range of dining, shopping and accommodations. You can climb up the volcanic plug - which Lone Butte is named after - a short but rather steep hike. The top offers an excellent view of Lone Butte and the surrounding area.

North of Lone Butte, you’ll find Horse Lake, which also offers few accommodation options. Interlakes, on Highway 24 is, without a doubt, one of the South Cariboo’s gems.

The area is perfect for a fishing, kayaking or canoeing getaway and many of the lakes are stocked annually. Some

of the biggest lakes include Sheridan Lake, Bridge Lake and Deka Lake but the picturesque Sulphurous, Hathaway and Roe lakes are also well worth a visit. The area is home to Bridge Lake Provincial Park and Rainbow/ Q’iwentem Provincial Park. Plenty of resorts and guest ranches are in the area.

The Bridge Lake ice caves, where caves and crevices keep a year-round supply of ice, are also highly recommended for a visit. With curvy roads and stunning views, Highway 24 is worth the drive, even if you’re just passing through.

North of 100 Mile

Leaving 100 Mile going north, you have two options.

The first is to stay on Highway 97 and pass through 103 Mile House, 105 Mile House, 108 Mile Ranch and Lac la Hache. This area has plenty of resorts and guest ranches, where you can take trail rides, as well as the 108 Golf Resort and some excellent dining opportunities.

Among the top recommendations is the 108 Mile Heritage Site, featuring an array of historic buildings, museum and artifacts from the Cariboo Gold Rush days. The site is on 108 Mile Lake, home to a squadron of pelicans for most of the summer. A well-maintained trail around the lake makes it a popular destination for those looking to walk, bike, run or ski in the wintertime, while a new fishing dock at 108 Mile Lake is a draw for those looking to cool off in the summer.

Further north near Lac La Hache, the Mt. Timothy Ski area is another popular destination, especially in winter. Lac la Hache, home to a small provincial park and several lakes, is also a great spot for water sports and fishing enthusiasts.

Option two takes you off the highway onto Canim-Hendrix Lake Road, just north of 100 Mile House. The road winds through Forest Grove, Canim Lake and past the Tsq’escenemc Canim Lake Band. The area is a huge draw for tourists looking to get away from it all.

Canim Lake, Mahood Lake and Ruth Lake are popular destinations for fishing, watersports and other backcountry activities. You’ll find Ruth Lake Provincial Park, Schoolhouse Lake Provincial Park, Canim Beach Provincial Park and the famous Wells Gray Provincial Park, though many visitors choose to stay at one of the local resorts. The site at Howard Lake has also had some substantial recent upgrades.

The area has some of the best waterfalls in the South Cariboo in the form of the Canim and Mahood Falls, which are fairly easily accessible to all ages.

Whether you’re looking for an active holiday, or a relaxing, this area has everything you need.

BRIDGE CREEK FALLS

For those looking to take a quick walk, there’s a trail on the south side of Centennial Park near the parking lot that leads to Bridge Creek Falls in 100 Mile House. The falls are undoubtedly among the most accessible in the South Cariboo and should be doable for most people including small children. There are no rails or fences, however, so best to keep a close eye.

CANIM AND MAHOOD FALLS

The Canim and Mahood Falls are perhaps a bit more off the beaten path than most of the options on this list but the walk is highly recommended. It’s a nice trail and the falls are among the best - if not THE best - in the South Cariboo. There’s not much of an incline on the trail but unlike most of the options listed here, a bear bell wouldn’t go amiss.

MOUNT BEGBIE LOOKOUT

Between 70 Mile House and 100 Mile House, you’ll find the Mount Begbie Lookout. The lookout is open to the public with some washrooms located at the bottom. There are no other spots in the South Cariboo where you can get such a wide open view as from the top of the lookout.

The trail itself switchbacks up and while relatively short is still a decent workout.

For those into photography, a telephoto lens would be a plus.

108 MILE LAKE

An accessible trail around the 108 Mile Lake offers a nice walk for those looking to stretch their legs, walk the dog and go birdwatching. The lake is popular for all ages. Keep an eye out for pelicans, pileated woodpeckers and ducks, geese and mule deer along the route.

Provincial Parks

The South Cariboo is home to an abundance of provincial parks, enough to spend the better part of a lifetime. Here are some of the most popular choices in the area.

GREEN LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK

Not the largest park in the South Cariboo, but the park and surrounding accommodation options are extremely popular because of Green Lake itself. The lake is among the best swimming holes with fairly shallow and warm water that has a brilliant green hue.

LAC LA HACHE PROVINCIAL PARK

Lac la Hache Provincial Park’s popularity also stems from being on a lake, which is used for swimming, fishing, power boating and water-skiing. There are rental and accommodation options in the area.

Carl Archie drums on the shores of Green Lake to welcome participants in the Pulling Together Canoe journey in 2022. The eight-day journey promotes healing, reconciliation, and respect for Indigenous host nations, as well as the sharing of Indigenous cultures.

BRIDGE LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK

The Interlakes area is probably more popular for its resorts than provincial parks but that doesn’t mean you should overlook Bridge Lake Provincial Park. If you ask around, you may be told it’s quite small, as it started at only 11 hectares, but now spans over 400 hectares protecting much of the undeveloped shoreline and islands. It can be a good spot to see bald eagles, beavers and other wildlife. Like many South Cariboo lakes, it’s a popular fishing destination.

WELLS GRAY PROVINCIAL PARK

You can find multiple provincial parks in the Forest Grove and Canim Lake area including Schoolhouse Provincial Park and Ruth Lake Provincial Park, but Wells Gray is undoubtedly the most recognizable. Even though only a small part reaches out into the area, it’s stunning with easily accessible waterfalls.

BIG BAR PROVINCIAL PARK

Big Bar Lake Provincial Park comprises approximately 330 hectares of rolling landscape. Set against a mountainous backdrop, the lake is surrounded by lodgepole pine and spruce. Visitors of Big Bar Lake Park often see wildlife on the four-km hiking trail surrounding the scenic wetlands, and enjoy angling for rainbow trout in the three-mile long lake. The area is an extremely popular fishing destination, and is also widely used by other recreationists. Want more information on these or other local provincial parks? Wonders of the South Cariboo

For those who know where to look, the South Cariboo has some things you won’t find anywhere else.

They’re not exactly well-kept secrets, but it’s possible to miss them if you’re not keeping an eye out. If you’re driving up from the south, you’ll pass the Painted Chasm - a canyon carved out at the end of the last ice age. The now-exposed rock is built out of lava flows in stunning horizontal layers.

Further to the north is something you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. Along Highway 24, there’s a set of ice caves near Bridge Lake. They’re sheltered from the sun and wind. Throughout the winter, snow and ice will melt and refreeze in the caves, creating a year-round supply of ice. There are trails built with safety and mobility in mind from the parking lot to the caves for easy access.

For those feeling adventurous, just southeast of 100 Mile House in Lone Butte, you can climb up the Butte, a volcanic plug. It’s popular with locals and teens. Although a short walk and climb, it’s not for the faint of heart, but the view is well worth it. Be careful as it’s quite steep going up and down. If you’re unsure of your abilities, start with one of the slightly easier trails and work your way up to it. For everyone else, it’s absolutely worth the brief stop.

Art galleries

The South Cariboo is home to a cosmic array of creative individuals from painters and sculptures to woodworkers, musicians and more.

Located in downtown 100 Mile House is the Parkside Art Gallery - a creative space with revolving exhibitions that showcase local talent. Parkside is run and operated by a handful of dedicated volunteers to provide the South Cariboo with a space that encompasses expression, culture and diversity.

Visitors can browse the gift shop featuring handcrafted jewelry, pottery and other unique-to-the- Cariboo items.

Inside the South Cariboo Business Centre, visitors can find a small-scale gallery: Showcase Gallery. On a regular basis, the display will change over to feature a new one. The display features solo and group exhibits. If you haven’t noticed, 100 Mile House is an open canvas itself.

Various structures throughout the core feature hand-painted murals, providing everything from stories of early settlers to local history.

There are 17 murals painted in 100 Mile House. Some are easy to spot but others involve locals or visitors to get out and walk.

Other for-profit options with regular hours include the Chris Harris Studio Gallery, Stone Bear Gallery and The Magic of Q in Lac La Hache. At times, you’ll also be able to find art at the Raven Youth Activity Centre.

Indigenous culture

The South Cariboo has a long and cultured history and takes its name from the once abundant caribou herds.

First Nations have called the area home for thousands of years. The entire area falls within unceded Secwepemc territory, which is bordered by Tsilhqot’in territory to the west and north. Nearest to 100 Mile House is Tsq’escenemc or Canim Lake Band.

Other nearby Secwepemc First Nations include Stswecem’c Xgat’tem (Canoe Creek/Dog Creek), Pellt’iq’t (Whispering Pines/Clinton), Llenlleney’ten (High Bar), Bonaparte Indian Band and Esk’etemc (Alkali Lake).

South Cariboo First Nations were known to be seasonal, living in teepees and lean-tos during more moderate summers and using underground kekuli villages during the winter. Some sites contain the remains of over 100 kekuli, indicating a large potential population. A reconstruction of a kekuli can be seen by the public near the Lillooet Tribal Council’s offices near the reserve community of T’t’ikt in Lillooet, B.C.

Annual events include National Indigenous Peoples Day, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. Many local First Nations’ cultural traditions have seen a resurgence in recent years with popular activities such as drum making, beading, games, ethnobotany, dream catcher making, crafts, baby cradles and cedar baskets, as well as hunting, fishing and trapping. Foods such as bannock and pemmican can still be enjoyed, as well as games such as Lahal. Powwows are usually accompanied by traditional drumming and dancing by band members sharing fancy shawl, traditional and jingle regalia.

Exploring the Cariboo Waggon Road

Travellers to the South Cariboo have more opportunities to access the historic Cariboo Waggon Road, once the main thoroughfare to the gold fields in Barkerville.

Over the past fast few years, the New Pathways to Gold Society has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to restore, repair and upgrade the route.

“It’s a real honour to work on this. The thing I find is people all have their own stories about the road,” said Don Hauka, executive director of the New Pathways to Gold Society. “They’ll say my grandfather was a wagoneer on this road or my mother walked it every day to get to school. People feel really connected to it.”

Built by the Royal Engineers, the road was vital in connecting the inhabitants of central and northern B.C. with the rest of the province. Many roadhouses along the route later became communities that endure to this day, such as Clinton, 70 Mile House and 100 Mile House. While parts of the road were later paved over when Highways 1 and 97 were constructed, many sections still remain relatively untouched.

“In some places, the road is in remarkable shape and still used, which is a testament to the Royal Engineers who built the road and to the local folks who kept it in shape when it was the only road in town,” Hauka said.

The society has partnered with local governments, receiving grants from the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism Association, the BC Rural Dividend Program and the District of 100 Mile House.

Hauka notes the wagon road was built on ancient indigenous trade routes, which is why the society has engaged with indigenous groups throughout the project’s lifetime to

tell “a more complete story.”

“The road didn’t just end with the end of the gold rush, it was the road that’s still in use today. It’s really sort of a spine down British Columbia that connects its modern history with its ancient Indigenous history.”

Hauka said the society is in the midst of phase two of the project. This involves repairing a section of the road at 51 Mile north of Clinton and constructing information kiosks and signage to guide tourists in communities like 100 Mile House and Clinton. Hauka said they hope to have this work completed by the summer of 2023.

Once the South Cariboo portion of the road is completed, Hauka said the society will move onto phase three and turn its attention to stretches of the road near Quesnel and Barkerville. Eventually, they aim to have the entire Cariboo Waggon Road mapped, restored and marked with signage for the public.

“Hikers and bikers are the main groups we’ve thought of while doing these things because the sections we’re working on are the equivalent of Pemberton’s Community Trail system in its scope,” Hauka said. “Eventually, of course, we want it to be much bigger.”

For those looking to explore the trail now, Hauka said they can rely on an online guidebook written by project assistant Amy Newman. Available at newpathwaystogold. ca/resources/, the guide provides a mile-by-mile guide of the route from Lillooet to Lac La Hache. Included are maps of access points, information on Indigenous use of the land and guides to local flora and fauna.

“I would definitely check that out and who knows? You might stumble on us out there working on a section.”

Arrival of the settlers

The South Cariboo area experienced a boom of settlers during the Cariboo Gold Rush. For First Nations that meant new trade, sickness, violence and colonization. Later many local First Nations suffered in the Residential School system. For miners and others travelling north, roadhouses were established along the Old Cariboo Road, often marked by their distance along the road from Lillooet which is where 100 Mile House, originally named Bridge Creek House, gets its name from.

For history buffs, much of the pioneer history is still readily available. Starting at Hat Creek Ranch, you’ll be able to go back in time and see buildings built as early as 1860. In Clinton, you’ll find the Clinton Museum with all kinds of period items. If you’re looking for a bit of history to take home, you might even be able to find a second-hand store in the small town that sells what you’re looking for.

Though many of the historic buildings have been lost to fire over the years, you’ll still find some roadhouses along the way north.

In 100 Mile House, you can see the only surviving stagecoach of the original B.C. Express and Stage Line. It travelled between Ashcroft and Prince George as late as 1917.

Just north of 100 Mile House, you’ll find the 108 Heritage Site. Many of the area buildings from the 1800s were moved to the site where they are open to the public. The site is well worth a visit and frequently hosts markets and other community events.

The South Cariboo also has a long logging history with old remnants scattered across the area, such as at Bridge Creek Falls. There’s a bit of a collection at the 108 Heritage Site for those wanting to have a closer look at some of the items.

Last but not least, there’s the historic railway stop in Lone Butte. The Pacific Great Eastern Railway reached Lone Butte just over 100 years ago. The water tower was built shortly after to supply steam engines.

The arrival of the railroad changed Lone Butte from a construction camp into a small town. The water tower location is now a popular rest stop and park host and is the home of some annual events. A caboose was added in recent years.

The South Cariboo has an eclectic mix of glistening lakes, dense forests and grazing cattle fields.

One of the best ways to experience the beauty of this area is to head off the main highways and into some of the more hidden communities nestled between valleys and plateaus.

The South Cariboo Visitor Centre, located at 155 Wrangler Way, provides information on a perfect escape into the area’s wilderness: a Scenic Tours brochure. In the brochure, you’ll find four “circle tours,” loops that will take you around the area, showcasing the diverse landscapes.

The first circle tour is Eagle CreekRuth Lake, which takes about three hours to complete by car. With a distance of 100 km, you can expect to see farmlands, Canim Lake, Eagle Creek and Ruth Lake, as well as the varied forests and pastures throughout the Forest Grove community.

The second circle tour is the Canim Lake-Horse Lake Tour, 130 kilometres long. The drive will take between three

and four hours and will bring you to Bridge Lake, Canim Lake and Horse Lake. You will find both campsites and lakeside cottages along Canim Lake, along with boat rentals and fishing supplies, making this a great stop for anyone who enjoys getting on the water and being outside.

There are various waterfalls in this area, all of which are short hikes from the road, including Canim Falls, Mahood Falls and Deception Falls. You will also find hundreds of tiny lakes running along Highway 24. Not only is it picturesque but a fisherman’s dream.

Circle tour number three also takes three to four hours to complete with a distance of 160 kilometres. The Bridge Lake-Green Lake Tour takes you past the Rayfield River valley, and towards the end, you’ll follow along the old fur brigade tail from the 1840s. Bridge Lake Provincial Park has excellent fishing, and you’ll find several resorts. Green Lake is a year-round destination, thriving in recreational sports, from water skiing to cross-country skiing. You’ll also find campgrounds and day-

use areas.

The final circle tour is the longest of the four tours, taking around five hours and covering 270 kilometres. The tour traces bits of the Old Cariboo Waggon Road through 108 Mile House and Lac La Hache. You’ll circle over to Dog Creek and Chasm before returning to 100 Mile House.

Along the drive, you can expect to see cattle ranches in 108 Mile and Lac La Hache - “the lake of the axe” - where supposedly an early voyageur lost their axe through a tiny hole in the lake when it was iced over. The Dog Creek hotel, the stopping grounds before entering the gold fields and at one point, the headquarters for the first licensed stagecoach line in B.C., is also on the route.

You will also run into Painted Chasm Provincial Park, where you’ll find dayuse areas along a canyon, where successive lava flows form layers in varying tones of red, brown, yellow and purple. For information on the circle tours, check out the South Cariboo Visitor Centre.

Gravel biking

There’s gravel in them thar hills around Clinton – and a local cyclist wants to share it with the world.

Kelly Servinski, of Clinton’s Tutti Gravel Inn, is promoting the South Cariboo village as a “gravel cycling” destination. He said he was blown away by the swath of well-maintained gravel roads coursing through spectacular scenery – the right ingredients for what he called a resurgence in gravel bike riding.

Servinski sees the South Cariboo as a destination for gravel biking, similar to what the Chilcotin was to mountain biking seven years ago. The sport is just as it sounds, with bikers hitting the gravel or Forest Service roads around the region for a short- or long-distance spin. Riders use a bike similar to a road bike with drop bars and gears but with bigger tires. Mountain bikes can be used but are best kept for the mountain bike hot spots of 100 Mile House and Williams Lake, as gravel riders don’t need suspension.

The icing on the cake? Unlike mountain biking, which requires trails to be built and developed over time, “the gravel is already there.”

Mountain biking

The South Cariboo is the gateway to mountain biking in the Cariboo-Chilcotin region. Riders can find trails along Highway 97 in Clinton, 100 Mile House and 108 Mile Ranch. Whether it’s to test your limits or have fun, there are trails for the novice and advanced riders.

The Huncity Mountain Bike Club is the South Cariboo’s heart and soul of mountain biking. The club is a registered non-profit society that works with provincial and local governments for the advocacy, creation and maintenance of trails in the South Cariboo.

Weekly club rides take place once a week and they meet in the parking lot at 4690 Telqua Dr., 108 Mile Ranch. Everyone is welcome.

Some of the best riding experiences can be enjoyed at 99 Mile Hill, just south of 100 Mile. Several new trails have been designed by professional builders for intermediate and advanced riders. The trails feature berms, bumps and woodwork.

The 108 Mile Ranch offers a network of trails featuring rides that roll over cattle trails with options to connect with beginner, intermediate and advanced single-track trails.

Going Fishing

When it comes to fishing in the South Cariboo, the opportunities are almost endless. There are hundreds of lakes to choose from, which makes this part of the region a spectacular place to fish.

When you ask a local, they’ll tell you the Interlakes area is one of the best destinations for fishing. The Interlakes stretches along Highway 24 and includes Fawn Lake, Sheridan Lake and Bridge Lake.

The South Cariboo is most commonly known for Rainbow trout, and lake and brook trout but Kokanee and burbot can also be found. Lac la Hache has a reputation for kokanee, lake trout and Rainbow trout. In Lac la Hache, the best fishing is recommended out on the lake. There are boat launches at the north end of the lake.

Canim Lake is also best known for its sizable lake trout as well as Rainbow trout.

Smaller lakes are best to visit by canoe or kayak and the larger lakes by personal watercraft or powerboat.

On the water

With hundreds of lakes to discover in the South Cariboo, it’s nearly impossible to not experience it for yourself. Whether you’re looking for a spot to go boating, swim or catch some sun, there is a lake for everybody. One of the largest lakes in the South Cariboo is Green Lake, located south of 100 Mile House near 70 Mile. The lake stretches for roughly 17 kilometres and mimics Caribbean colours during the summer.

The lake features several parks and is recommended by locals as one of the best for boating and water sports. Green Lake is also excellent for swimming and its sandy beaches that dot the irregular shortline in five spots. Travel along Canim-Hendrix Road to the northeast of 100 Mile House and you’ll find Ruth Lake. This lake is smaller and is a favourite for local swimmers because of its warm water and maintained park space. Unless you’re swimming in a known swimming spot, like at a resort or park, you’re best swimming off of a dock or boat.

If canoeing or kayaking is your thing, most resorts and campgrounds offer rentals by the hour or day. While you can do so on just about any lake, you might find some of the smaller lakes the preferred option.

The South Cariboo is also a great place to go powerboating whether you just want to go really fast or are looking to tube, wakeboard or waterski. The larger lakes in the South Cariboo, such as Lac La Hache, Canim Lake and Green Lake would be the top recommendation here simply because they have plenty of space. Some of the smaller lakes also have speed restrictions in place.

Ready, aim…

Attendees of the Bighorn Archery Club’s annual Traditional Shoot take aim at a bowbird, a foam disc being launched by a machine.

String that bow

The South Cariboo has long been a destination for archers to come and visit, offering year-round shoots with an indoor arena and outdoor course.

“Archery is a great family sport that allows everyone to compete at their own level of competency,” said Allen Pickering, president of Bighorn Archery Club.

Two of the largest archery shoots include a 3D indoor shoot at the Stan Halcro Arena in 100 Mile House. The club also takes the 3D shoot outside and into the forest at the 99 Mile Snowmobile Club, usually in the summertime.

Those who want to practice have the option of both an indoor and outdoor course in 100 Mile House.

“We design the shoots so it is enjoyable to everybody,” said Pickering. “Anybody can come to the South Cariboo and participate in the sport of archery.”

Tee off in the South Cariboo

The South Cariboo is home to some exceptional golfing at the 108 Golf Resort, with a course nestled between two natural lakes, it embraces the rolling landscape of the Cariboo region. Starting on the first tee, golfers can set about 6,800 yards of evergreen, a variety of interesting holes and of course, enjoy the scenic backdrop.

The course has seen an uptick in users over the past few years, with more young people also joining in the fray. As a result, the owners have been upgrading their facilities, including renovating seven hotel rooms and extending their RV park to include 14 new full-service sites. The resort has also upgraded its old campsites so each one will now have full-service available.

On horseback

The South Cariboo is one of the province’s go-to destinations for an authentic western experience. In fact, it is home to an abundance of guest and working ranches, ranging from resort-style luxury to a more rustic, traditional cowboy experience.

While there are plenty of ways to explore the South Cariboo, trekking by horseback remains one of the most popular in the region.

There are around 20 ranches in the area that offer everything from family-friendly, low-impact trail rides to multi-hour saddle treks through rolling grasslands, sagebrush-covered vistas and more.

No matter what your wild west dream is, you can count on the experts to match the right horse to its rider.

If horseback riding is not your style, most ranches offer alternatives such as wagon or cart rides. There is something for everybody to experience the essence of the west in the South Cariboo.

Off to the rodeo

The Interlakes Rodeo will return to the action again this year, showcasing some of the best bull-riding that has ever been seen.

Interlakes Rodeo chairman Gary Cleveland said volunteers are excited to host another weekend of exciting rodeo action in Aug. 4-5. Held at the Interlakes Rodeo Grounds, the rodeo will have all its usual major events, including saddleback riding, bareback riding, team roping, calf roping, barrel racing, bull riding, steer dogging, breakaway roping.

Other rodeos usually held in the South Cariboo include the Little Britches Rodeo in 100 Mile House for young cowboys and cowgirls, the Clinton May Ball Rodeo May and the Bridge Lake Stampede in July.

The Clinton rodeo is known for its intermission entertainment with events like the cowboy foot race. Visitors can camp out at the rodeo grounds or find accommodations in town and ride the shuttle bus to and from the rodeo.

The Bridge Lake Stampede has been a staple in the South Cariboo for more than 70 years, with horses and their riders compete in several disciplines such as bareback riding, saddle bronc, bull riding, barrel racing and more.

Check with the South Cariboo Visitor Centre to confirm dates and times.

Motocross

If you are someone who seeks the adrenaline rush of extreme sports, check out the South Cariboo’s motocross track. The South Cariboo Track and Trail Dirt Bike Association have restored motocross in 100 Mile House and it’s rapidly becoming a destination favourite.

“We wanted to give families and kids a place where they can enjoy a pastime, in a closed setting,” said association president, Brandon Plewes. “People who visit the South Cariboo and bring their dirtbikes now have a place where they can ride as a family.”

Geared towards family fun, the motocross track is easy and safe to ride.

Visitors looking to ride can purchase day and weekend passes to the motocross track. “There is a great line of sight to the track, so parents who aren’t riding can see your kids or family members ride 90 per cent of the track,” said Plewes. “It’s a track for everybody.”

Downhill slopes

Skiing has always been a popular recreational activity in the South Cariboo, home to Lac la Hache’s Mount Timothy Recreation Resort.

After a couple of years of being in limbo, the new owners of Mount Timothy Recreation Resort have gotten it back into the forefront of winter fun in the South Cariboo. Every year the hill has seen more improvements - from the addition of five rental log cabins to a complete renovation of the upper lodge and rental building below.

They have also added a new exterior ticket kiosk to the lodge which will help reduce congestion for those not needing to rent skis.

The resort offers some of the most affordable skiing and snowboarding in the province. Focused on offering an “unhurried, unworried” family atmosphere, the lifts are open from 9 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. from Thursday to Sunday. For the youth who aren’t ready to ski or need a break, there is also a tubing hill.

The mountain also offers two trails, a beginner and an intermediate. The lodge is open until 7 p.m., with a range of refreshments. Please check the website for ticket prices at www.skitimothy.com

With Mt. Timothy Recreation Resort now officially a part of the Gold Rush Snowmobile Trail, snowmobilers are welcome to come to the hill, park their sleds, have lunch or dinner and relax inside the lodge before heading into the mountains, or back home.

Nordic Skiing

Cross-country skiing is one of Canada’s biggest winter activities and the South Cariboo is no exception.

Several trails are available in the area, including the 99 Mile Trail system operated by the 100 Mile House Nordics Club, and the Big Bar Ski trails run by the Clinton Snow Jockey Club.

The Nordics Club used to be the biggest of its kind in B.C., hosting several cross-country skiing races in its heyday and has seen a resurgence in recent years. Nestled into the 99 Mile Trails, the club offers many programs and events open to visitors, including a Family Day celebration.

In January this year, it held its second Teck Northern Race for youth for the first time in nearly a decade. The trails are 45 kilometres in length, with 2.5 of that being lit. A lodge, with ski and snowshoe rentals and scrumptious lunches, is also open until 4 p.m. each day. For those who can’t ski, there are also snowshoe trails. An adventure park is also available for younger kids to explore. Please check the website for ticket and rental prices at 100milenordics.com

The Big Bar Ski Trail network offers approximately 26 kms of cross-country ski trails ranging in difficulty from beginner to advanced. Skiers will enjoy spectacular views of the Marble Range and 51 Creek Canyon. Several other trails, such as the Gold Rush Trail, mostly used for snowmobiling, also allow snowshoeing and skiing.

Ride with us

In the South Cariboo, the snow really comes down during the winter months. So why not get off that couch and go explore many of the snowmobile trails the region has to offer.

There is a trail in almost every corner of the area, including Clinton, Green Lake, Mica Mountain and the Interlakes area. The Gold Rush Snowmobile Trail is one of the most beloved of the trails, starting at Clinton and going all the way up to Horsefly, with connections to 100 Mile House. More development is also planned, with extensions to Likely and Wells proposed. Despite having ‘snowmobile’ in the name, the trail is in fact multi-purpose.

The trail also is rich in history, based on the

historic path people used in the 1850s to strike gold. It is now a homage to those people and the trials they faced on the trail.

No matter if visitors or newcomers are new in the activity of snowmobiling, there are a few clubs in the area able to show them the ropes, including the Green Lake Snowmobile Club, Interlakes Snowmobile Club, the Mica Mountain Riders Association and the 100 Mile Snowmobile Club.

The Cariboo Chilcotin has seven clubs in total, with 498 members between them. With around 1,056 kilometres of trail maintained by the clubs (five of which are in the South Cariboo), the trails are as free and open as can be, allowing a true getaway from civilization.

Sometimes the best part of winter is sitting on your favourite lawn chair with some friends and a cooler of suitable beverages, waiting for that nice laker or Kokanee to nip at the line.

With numerous lakes in the area and long winter, the South Cariboo has plenty of ice fishing to offer. If it’s a casual outing with friends, family or a date - a number of lakes are available for that, too many to mention really.

The Interlakes area is perhaps the most popular ice fishing destination but you’ll also find plenty of anglers at Lac la Hache and Canim Lake.

If it’s competitive ice fishing you want, plenty of organizations have the line ready for you. The Fishing Highway 24 Tourism Association and the Deka Lake and District Volunteer Fire Department have also hosted ice fishing derbies, which are popular with both competitors and spectators.

Wrangler Spirit

The 100 Mile House Wranglers are a big deal in the South Cariboo community. On almost every night they play at the local arena, the stands are filled with fans.

Playing in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, arguably one of the best Junior B leagues in the country, the Wranglers tend to play fast and hard. The franchise was born in 2001 as the Summerland Sting and had eight seasons, making the playoffs six of those times. However, at the end of the 2008-09 season, the Sting relocated to Penticton and rebranded as the Lakers. Due to arena difficulties and unable to compete with the local Junior A (Penticton Vees) team for attendance, the Lakers moved to 100 Mile House and became the Wranglers just after three seasons.

Since coming to the South Cariboo Rec Centre in 2013, the Wranglers have become a successful franchise and have done something their predecessors have not: Win silverware.

Since the conclusion of the 2015-16 season, banners for the KIJHL, Cyclone Taylor Cup and the Keystone Cup have been hanging from the arena’s rafters. Although they didn’t make it to the playoffs in the past two years, the Wrangler spirit remains strong.

Home games are played at the South Cariboo Rec Centre, which is just off Highway 97.

For schedule and ticket prices, check the website at www.100milewranglers. com

With 49 regular-season games from September to mid-February, Wranglers’ hockey makes for an exciting and affordable night to catch a game of hockey while visiting 100 Mile House.

SNOW CLEARING

Outdoor skating

Skaters have a few free options in the South Cariboo.

A new outdoor rink in 100 Mile House has been a huge draw since it opened in late 2020 on Cedar Avenue, while small rinks can be spotted around the region – from Forest Grove to 103 Mile, Sulphurous Lake, Greeny Lake, Sepa Lake and 108 Lake. The outdoor rinks offer an invaluable space for those learning how to skate, or others wanting a quick spin or an hour or two of shinny.

“For us up here our winters are long,” said Nadaya McNeil, the organizer behind the 100 Mile outdoor rink. “You’ve got to find something to do.”

Public skates, hockey leagues or other registered events are also offered at the South Cariboo Rec Centre, the Rolf Zeis Memorial Arena in Lac La Hache or the skating rink in Clinton.

Curling Rocks

100 Mile House Curling Rink is home to two clubs, the 100 Mile House Curling Club and the Lac la Hache Curling Club. Clinton has also its own curling club, run out of the 47 Mile Sports Complex, which features two lanes of ice, a spectator gallery, concession, and an upstairs lounge area.

The Lac La Hache Curling runs a league throughout the winter months at the rink in 100 Mile. The 100 Mile House Curling Club is a bit bigger and a bit busier. They run various leagues: drop-in, mixed, men’s, ladies, doubles and junior and also have an upstairs lounge area.

“Curling is known as one of the most welcoming sports. You will feel part of our club the minute you walk in the door,” said Maria Hamilton, treasurer and spokesperson.

The club usually hosts four bonspiels, including the mixed doubles. Those who want to try their hand at the sport during the rest of the season can come out Mondays for a $5 fee.

Getting ready to go

Packing your bag and wondering what to bring or leave at home? We can help with that.

ZOOM LENS

It’s generally advisable not to get too close to wild animals, especially in the somewhat sparse ly populated South Cariboo where animals might not be used to humans. A zoom lens on your camera is a great thing to pack along with binoculars for local bird watching.

BEAR AWARE

Wondering whether you should throw in that bear bell or spray? It depends on your plans. If you’re planning to spend your time by some of the more popular lakes, you can probably leave it at home. Similarly, if you’re heading out with a guide, they should be taking care of that kind of thing. However, if you plan to do longer hikes, kayak or camping trips it wouldn’t go amiss unless it’s winter of course.

RAIN GEAR

This is perhaps the thing you’ll most likely regret packing. Most months in the South Cariboo have around 20 dry days. On days with precipitation, less than two mm is the most common, so just stopping in for a quick cup of joe or even taking brief cover under a tree while it drips will usually do the trick. It’s probably best to leave the rain gear at home but if you’re feeling unsure, June tends to be the wettest month. Sunglasses, on the other hand, are almost a must in both summer and winter in the Cariboo.

SWIM GEAR

Whether you’re planning to go swimming or not, you’ll likely find yourself at the edge of a lake at some point and may change your mind. Even if you don’t, some of the local resorts have saunas and hot tubs that you might want to use.

GOOD SHOES

If you’re planning to go out into the bush at all, you’ll definitely want to bring a good pair of shoes. Not all trails are easy to navigate in a pair of flipflops. Because of how dry it is, occasionally, you might even run into some small cactuses so even a pair of flats could still leave you with an unpleasant prickle.
