Discover our communities

Nestled on the Fraser Plateau between the Coastal and Rocky Mountain ranges, the South Cariboo is renowned as an outdoor recreational paradise, with vast forests, pristine lakes, accessible trails and majestic mountains.

Home to the Tsq’escenemc (Canim Lake) First Nation for thousands of years, the area gets its name from the once abundant caribou herds in the area. In the 1800s, the area was overrun by gold-seekers travelling the Cariboo Waggon Road from Lillooet to Barkerville.

As they needed a place to stop on the long journey, roadhouses were built as supply points. Each roadhouse, such as 70 Mile and 100 Mile House, was named for the distance it was from Lillooet (Mile 0).

Today, the South Cariboo is home to more than 20,000 people in several small unincorporated communities surrounding 100 Mile House, the region’s economic heart. 100 Mile House provides work, shopping and entertainment for permanent and seasonal residents living or staying as far north as Lac La Hache or south to 70 Mile House.

Originally a fur trading station on the Hudson’s Bay Company Brigade Trail from Kamloops to Fort Alexandria, 100 Mile House has grown and evolved over the years but has retained its Cariboo spirit and rural hospitality.

CIRCLE TOURS

ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO EXPERIENCE EVERYTHING THE SOUTH CARIBOO HAS TO OFFER IS THROUGH A CIRCLE TOUR OF THE REGION.

10 | EXPLORE, ENJOY, EXPERIENCE – More of the Good Life! | EXPLORE, ENJOY, EXPERIENCE – More of the Good Life!
Canim Lake. Photo Peter Hart

The South Cariboo Visitor Centre has four driving tours available for adventurers wanting to get off the main strip and explore the hidden and rural communities nestled among our valleys and plateaus.

The roads on these tours are generally well-maintained gravel roads but conditions may vary due to weather. Some trips are on Forest Service Roads so make sure you drive with caution, obey all signs and give industrial traffic the right of way.

As you will be in the backwoods, always tell someone where you are going, get directions beforehand and take a map of the area. It’s always a good idea to carry snacks and water. A cell phone can come in handy, but coverage can be spotty at times so don’t rely on it.

TOUR ONE:

EAGLE CREEK-RUTH LAKE: 100 km (about three hours)

Head north on Highway 97 and take the Canim-Hendrix Lake exit for a pleasant afternoon trip through some charming townsites and to popular swimming and fishing lakes. The tour follows Bridge Creek on Canim-Hendrix Lake Road across the Cariboo Plateau.

You will pass through the community of Forest Grove, which was historically a forestry community and still has a school, Legion and a small grocery store and gas station to serve the resident community. Continue along Canim-Hendrix Lake Road, past the Tsq’escenemc lands, home to the Secwepemc Peoples, who have lived in this area for thousands of years and continue to share their culture.

The road then winds around to reveal the stunning beauty of Canim Lake, a 37-kilometre lake surrounded by rugged hills and mountains. From there, turn northward, climbing above the Lake to Eagle Creek, before winding westward onto a gravel road through the forests and small ranches of Hawkins Lake

CIRCLE TOUR MAP

See pages 30 and 31 for a visual guide of where the Circle Tours will take you in the South Cariboo.

The return leg skirts the shoreline of Ruth Lake – one of the region’s hidden gems –before passing through rolling pasturelands back to Forest Grove. An alternative route circles west of Ruth Lake, along Bradley Creek before ascending a thickly forested ridge back to Forest Grove. Be warned: once you visit, you may never want to leave.

TOUR TWO:

CANIM LAKEHORSE LAKE TOUR

130 kilometres long (three to four hours)

This route epitomizes the South Cariboo, renowned for its numerous and pristine lakes. Similar to Tour 1, it starts in 100 Mile House, and winds through the scenic farmland along Bridge Creek on Canim-Hendrix Lake Road to Canim Lake before passing through a thickly forested valley and descending into a chain of picturesque lakes.

Take South Canim Lake Road to the junction of the Interlakes connector. A six-kilometre side-trip on the northeast fork will take you to a forestry pullout, and a short, pleasant walk to the spectacular Canim and Mahood Falls. Just beyond these falls is Mahood Lake, part of Wells Gray Provincial Park, and a longer hike to Deception Falls. All are stunning and worth the visit.

The south fork at the junction of the South Canim Lake Road and Interlakes connector will put you on a good gravel road to Hathaway, Sulphurous and Horse Lakes. Note: If you continue

straight on Highway 24, the road will lead you to the Interlakes area and Sheridan Lake. Not only is this a picturesque route but a fisherman’s dream.

See pages 30 and 31 for a visual guide of where the Circle Tours will take you in the South Cariboo.

TOUR THREE:

BRIDGE LAKEGREEN LAKE TOUR

160 km (three to four hours)

Some of the Cariboo’s most diverse landscapes can be seen on this route, which follows Highway 24 east to Bridge Lake, a charming unincorporated recreational

community that sprung up in the days when fur traders travelled by waterways and overland trails before the Cariboo Waggon Road was built.

Check out Bridge Lake Provincial Park, which has excellent fishing and several resorts. The route then swings westward, passing pristine roadside lakes and sprawling cattle ranches through the Rayfield River valley. The final leg traces the old

fur brigade trail from the 1840s that ran between Fort Kamloops and Fort Alexandria along the west side of Green Lake Provincial Park, a popular swimming and fishing hole that gets its greenish hues, and its name, from algae and other microorganisms. The lake is a year-round destination, renowned for its recreational sports, from water skiing to cross-country skiing. You’ll also find campgrounds and day-use areas.

TOUR FOUR:

DOG CREEK-CHASM TOUR

270 km (about five hours).

Trace bits of the old Cariboo Waggon Road, passing through diverse landscapes and amazing scenery that defines the wild ruggedness of the South Cariboo.

The tour begins in 100 Mile House, heading north on Highway 97, passing through valley ranch lands to 108 Mile Ranch, a subdivision built by Blocks Bros. in the 1960s that is now home to thousands of residents. The community has a gas station, grocery store, restaurants and coffee shop, as well as the 108 Mile Golf Resort, which hosts several tournaments throughout the year.

A definite must-see is the 108 Heritage Site on Highway 97, where you can stretch your legs with a walk around 108 Lake – if you’re lucky the pelicans will be on their annual spring pilgrimage - or hear the sordid tale of

Agnus McVee, a 108 Mile roadhouse matron who killed upwards of 57 unsuspecting miners for their gold and buried it around the area. A portion of her roadhouse is located on site, along with several other historical buildings, including a 160-foot log barn, considered the oldest of its kind in Canada.

The trip continues to Lac La Hache - “the lake of the axe” – where supposedly an early voyageur lost their axe through a tiny hole in the lake when it was iced over. The community touts itself as the longest town in the Cariboo and offers year-round fishing as well as resort facilities for boating, camping and swimming. The community, home to Mt Timothy Recreational Resort, also has several shops, gas stations and restaurants if you’re feeling hungry on the trip or need to refuel.

At Lac La Hache, leave Highway 97 at Enterprise Road, cutting south along a portion of the vast, densely treed Fraser River Plateau.

Turn west to Dog Creek, home to Stswecemc Xgat’tem First Nation, perched high above a spectacular canyon. Descend into the arid, sagebrush covered benchlands along the Fraser River. Built in 1956, the hotel at Dog Creek served as a stopping place on the River Trail, the earliest route to the gold trails and later became the first officially licensed stagecoach line in B.C.

Indigenous pictographs can be seen at the base of the nearby balsitic escarpment. Pick up a snack or a drink at the Dog Creek store or fill up at the gas station before basking in the beauty of Canoe Creek, which has been featured in several films over the years.

The route brings you out at the Painted Chasm Provincial Park, where you’ll find day-use areas along a canyon, where successive lava flows have formed layers in varying tones of red, brown, yellow and purple. It is part of the 3,067-hectare Chasm Provincial Park, which conserves forests of ponderosa pine at the northern limit of its range and diverse low elevation lakes and marshes. Informal hiking trails offer occasional spectacular views. There are steep cliffs at this park so hike at your own risk. Facilities include a pull-out viewing area and a larger parking lot with a toilet.

As you head back to 100 Mile House on Highway 97, you will pass 70 Mile House, a stopping point for gold prospectors, with a telegraph office, post office and bus stop. Today, it is still a great place to refuel with a gas station, grocery store and even a pub for those heading south or north along Highway 97 or to the scenic Green Lake and Watch Lake communities, which offer camping, retreats or resorts and horseback trail rides.

On the way home you will pass The Mt. Begbie Fire Lookout, which offers far-reaching views on a clear day. It’s only a five-minute climb from the parking lot although wear sensible shoes. Named after the famous “hanging judge” Matthew Begbie, the tower had previously been staffed with an observer during the fire season. For those interested in photography, a telephoto lens is a plus. Toilets and picnic benches are available.

Lone Butte, a historic railway stop, was the highest elevation on the Pacific Great Eastern Railway line and still retains a glimmer of its former glory days. A water tower, built to supply steam engines during the community’s heyday, is now a popular rest stop and home of some annual events. A 1947 caboose was added to the rest stop in recent years.

Those feeling adventurous can climb up the Butte, a volcanic plug, popular with locals and teens. Although a short walk and climb, it’s not for the faint of heart, but the view is worth it. Be careful as it’s quite steep going up and down. If you’re unsure of your abilities, start with one of the slightly easier trails and work your way up to it. For everyone else, it’s absolutely worth the brief stop.

Lone Butte has also a gas station, grocery store, coffeeshop, restaurant and antiques shop – along with a pub – making it an ideal place for a day trip or a stop on the way to the Interlakes, which is truly one of the region’s gems. This area is perfect for fishing, kayaking or a canoeing getaway and many of the lakes are stocked with fish annually. It’s also home to the Bridge Lake Ice Caves, see page 28.

The biggest lakes include Sheridan Lake, Bridge Lake and Deka Lake but the picturesque Sulphurous Lake, Hathaway Lake and Roe Lake are also worth a visit. The area is home to Bridge Lake Provincial Park, and Rainbow Q’iwentem Provincial Park. There are plenty of resorts and guest ranches in the area.

Bridge Lake

Ice Caves

Located along Highway 24, south of 100 Mile House, the unique geology of the Bridge Lake shoreline features caves and crevices sheltered from the elements. Melting snow seeps through the rock crevices into the caves where it freezes, creating a year-round supply of ice that was originally used by First Nations and later by early settlers in the area. Four trails of varying degrees of difficulty wind through the park,

to observation platforms overlooking the lake from above the caves, making them safe for visitors young and old to visit. Visitors are strongly discouraged from trying to enter the caves below. A dock provides a spot for shoreline fishing and is easily accessible from Beaver Trail. Facilities also include a picnic area near the ice caves and resting benches. There is one bathroom located beside the parking lot.

ARTS AND CULTURE

100 MILE HOUSE IS SMALL BUT MIGHTY WHEN IT COMES TO THE ARTS AND CULTURE.

THEATRE

The 100 Mile Performing Arts Society presents productions throughout the year while our strong core of talented local artists, photographers and crafters share and sell their work at our local art galleries, restaurants and businesses.

THE PARKSIDE ART GALLERY

A creative space with revolving exhibitions that showcase local talent. Parkside is run and operated by a handful of dedicated volunteers to provide the South Cariboo with a space that encompasses expression, culture and diversity. Visitors can browse the gift shop featuring handcrafted jewelry, pottery and other unique to-the- Cariboo items.

THE SHOWCASE GALLERY

Inside the South Cariboo Business Centre, visitors can find this smallscale gallery, which regularly changes its displays. The display features solo and group exhibits.

THE CARIBOO WAGGON ROAD

TRAVELLERS TO THE SOUTH CARIBOO CAN WALK, BIKE OR TRAVEL SECTIONS OF THE HISTORIC CARIBOO WAGGON ROAD, ONCE THE MAIN THOROUGHFARE TO THE GOLD FIELDS IN BARKERVILLE.

Originally an ancient indigenous trade route, the 650-kilometre Cariboo Waggon Road was built by the Royal Engineers to connect the inhabitants of central and northern B.C. with the rest of the province. The development saw the creation of roadhouses – or stopping points for food, water and sleep – from Lillooet to Barkerville. These roadhouses later became communities such as 70 Mile House and 100 Mile House. Parts of the road were later paved over when Highways 1 and 97 were constructed, but many sections remain relatively untouched.

The original Cariboo Waggon Road (City of Vancouver Archives).

The New Pathways to Gold Society plans to add kiosks and interpretive signs at key communities this spring. The signs will recognize not only the importance of the route to gold-seekers but Indigenous communities who used it long before. It has also developed a BC Historical Roads Project, aimed at combining the Cariboo Waggon Road with the Alexandria Bridge project.

An online guidebook has been created to help travellers experience the rugged and scenic terrain along the route and learn about Indigenous use of the land and local flora and fauna. The New Pathways to Gold plans to revamp its website this year, posting the latest information on routes and side trips as well as upcoming plans for future restoration projects. Travellers can also find info on its Facebook page.

Completed sections now include Lillooet to Clinton over Pavilion Mountain; Clinton to Lac La Hache; and 100 Mile to 150 Mile. The next stage involves working on Quesnel to Barkerville.

No matter what section you plan to seek, ensure you have water and food as the distances are long in-between and some of the water enroute is not potable. And don’t rush: The Cariboo Waggon Road is much more than a road – there are many places to stop and explore as well as the opportunity to see birds and animals that call the Cariboo home. Enjoy the trip!

Historic Marker

Stop at the South Cariboo Visitor Centre to view this historic marker that denotes the 100th mile of the Cariboo Waggon Road. During the 1860’s Gold Rush to the Barkerville area, roadhouses offered shelter for travellers and their horses.

Finish your visit by walking along the Marsh Trail, view the World’s Largest Pair of Skis, which stand in front of the Visitor Centre and stroll through town where you will notice the huge murals displayed on businesses downtown.

A ROUTE ON THE CARIBOO WAGGON ROAD

100 MILE TO 150 MILE: 79 kilometres (does not include side trips)

Road surfaces: pavement, hard-packed gravel, dirt tracks.

100 Mile House was known in the early years as Bridge Creek, for the creek that runs through the area. It got its roots during the Fur Trade when the Hudson’s Bay Co. used Bridge Creek as a camping spot on the Brigade Trail route.

The Cariboo Waggon Road came through here in 1862 – the early names for it were Lillooet to Alexandria Road and Wright’s Road. The original route snaked back and forth on what is now Highway 97.

This CWR is directly underneath Highway 97 much of the time, though there are a few places where cyclists and trekkers will be off pavement.

OUTDOOR PURSUITS

The South Cariboo is known as the land of a thousand lakes - and we don’t disappoint! Whether you’re looking for water sports, beach time or sitting on the lake with a fishing rod, there are endless opportunities to explore.

Make a splash

One of the largest lakes in the South Cariboo is Green Lake, located near 70 Mile House. The lake stretches for roughly 17 kilometres and mimics Caribbean colours during the summer. The lake features several parks and is recommended by locals as one of the best for boating and water sports. Green Lake is also excellent for swimming and its sandy beaches that dot the irregular shoreline in five spots.

Ruth Lake: This lake is smaller and is a favourite of local swimmers because of its warm water and maintained park space.

For power boating, the larger lakes in the South Cariboo, such as Lac La Hache, Canim Lake and Green Lake would be the top recommendations simply because they have plenty of space. Some of the smaller lakes also have speed restrictions in place.

Hooked on fishing

Fishing opportunities in the South Cariboo are nearly endless. There are hundreds of lakes to choose from, which makes this part of the region a spectacular place to fish. The South Cariboo is most known for Rainbow trout, which is stocked in many of its lakes, but lake and brook trout as well as Kokanee and burbot can also be found.

The Interlakes’ pristine watering holes such as Sheridan Lake and Bridge Lake – are among the best destinations for fishing. Lac la Hache also has a reputation for kokanee, lake trout and Rainbow trout. There are boat launches at the north end of the lake for those looking to catch their fill. For sizeable lake trout, Canim Lake is said to be your best bet but almost every lake is a perfect place to fish. Smaller lakes are best to visit by canoe or kayak and larger lakes by personal watercraft or powerboat.

There’s nothing better than sitting on a favourite lawn chair and waiting for that nice laker or Kokanee to nip at the line. With numerous lakes in the area and long winter, the South Cariboo has plenty of ice fishing to offer.

If it’s a casual outing with friends, family or a dateseveral lakes are available for that, too. The Interlakes area is perhaps the most popular ice fishing destination, but you’ll also find plenty of anglers at Lac la Hache and Canim Lake.

If it’s competitive ice fishing you want, plenty of organizations have the line ready for you. The Fishing Highway 24 Tourism Association and the Deka Lake and District Volunteer Fire Department host ice fishing derbies, which are popular with both competitors and spectators.

Horseback riding

Trekking by horseback remains one of the most popular ways to explore the South Cariboo region, which has an abundance of guest and working ranches offering an authentic western riding experience. About 20 ranches in the area offer everything from family-friendly, low-impact trail rides to multi-hour saddle treks through rolling grasslands, sagebrush-covered vistas and more. No matter what your wild west dream is, you can count on the experts to match the right horse to its rider.

The South Cariboo is a destination for those with a bow and arrow. The Bighorn Archery Club hosts two shoots a year: a 3D indoor shoot at the Stan Halcro Arena in 100 Mile House in late spring and an outdoor 3D shoot outside in the forest at the 99 Mile Snowmobile Club. Year-round practice is held in an indoor arena in winter and at an outdoor course during the summer.

100 MILE HOUSE WRANGLERS

Catch a game with heart at the Cariboo Rec Centre. One of the best Junior A leagues in the country, the 100 Mile Wranglers offer an exciting and affordable night of entertainment. The team has 49 regular-season games from September to mid-February so time it right to catch them at home.

When to go

The temperate climate in 100 Mile House comes with significant precipitation, 428 mm (16.9 inches) annually. However, most months in the South Cariboo have around 20 dry days so you don’t need a lot of rain gear for your visit – unless it’s in June, which tends to be our wettest month. Fall and winter are also beautiful times to visit because even on cold days, we have big open skies to watch the stars or the aurora borealis.

Getting here

Easily accessible from the North, East and South, 100 Mile House’s central location makes it a sensible stop on many routes through the region. Driving: Hwy 97 or from east, via Hwy 24. You can also incorporate a stop in 100 Mile House on a popular circle route from Port Hardy to Bella Coola. This includes a scenic ferry ride and drive along Hwy 20.

CURLING

The 100 Mile House Curling Club runs various leagues throughout the season as well as four bonspiels a year, including mixed doubles, ladies, mens’ and mixed curling action. Free learn-to-curl lessons every second Monday for a $5 fee. The rink has a licensed lounge upstairs where you can watch the bonspiel competitions while grilling the locals about the area.

SKATING

Public skates, hockey leagues or other registered events are offered at the South Cariboo Rec Centre in 100 Mile House and the Rolf Zeis Memorial Arena in Lac La Hache. Skaters also have a few free options in the South Cariboo, as many of our local lakes freeze over in the winter. Popular skating lakes can be found from Forest Grove to 103 Mile, Sulphurous Lake, Greeny Lake, Sepa Lake and 108 Lake. The outdoor rinks offer an invaluable space for those learning how to skate, or others wanting a quick spin or an hour or two of shinny.
