The Tree of Life Diagram According by the Theory of Darwin.

The Book Cover and Author, Charles Darwin

01 The Enlightenment: “On The Origin Of Species” by Charles Darwin On the Origin of Species (or, more completely, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life), published on 24 November 1859, is a work of scientific literature by Charles Darwin that is considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology. Darwin's book introduced the scientific theory that populations evolve over the course of generations through natural selection. The book presented evidence that the diversity of life arose by common descent through a branching pattern of evolution. During this project, we were required to read the book, especially the topic of STRUGGLE FOR EXISTENCE and NATURAL SELECTION to inspire us in transforming biomimicry into architecture. And also intend to design a building that conforms to natural selection to satisfy the senses of a variety of species no matter humans or animals.

02 Species Research: Sandra Pangolin & Giant Forest Ant After reading the book, we were required to pick one or more species that living within the Penang Biosphere and start to explore the very quality of their existence. Study and research how their habitat and behavior influence their life. To understand what is the relationship between the chosen species, humans and the environment.

03 Site Exploring Theme: “Another Scale of Architecture” by Junya Ishigami Junya Ishigami is a young architect in Japan and one of the most successful architects in the new generation. In 2009, Junya Ishigamis's workshop design for the Kanagawa Institute of Technology won Japan's top architecture award: the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize. This book offers more proof of Ishigami's precocious talent. Plans, designs, photographs, models and writings from various projects illustrate Ishigami stated aim to embody in architecture that which has never been embodied before. An essay by historian Taro Igarashi assesses Ishigami's importance and success, including his Golden Lion award at the 12th International Architecture Biennale. Junya Ishigami believes there are many differences between conventional architecture, as an artificial environment, and the natural environment – different forms and systems, different degrees of diversity, and different times. Yet the most fundamental difference of them all is scale, from subatomic particles, insects and animals, and the human world, to the global scale and even the incomprehensible vastness beyond our planet. In this book, Ishigami poses questions about how to bring this entire spectrum of scales into the realm of architecture, expanding its concept to embrace fluctuation and vagueness through five themes: Clouds, Forest, Horizon, Sky, and Rain.

One of the inspiring images in the book @ P150 After reading the book, we were separated into 5 groups to analyze each theme in the book. I am in the Sky group. My group combine and rearrange the understanding and feeling of the Sky by each member. Try to express the feelings through the diagram. Other than that, the abstract model also combined the imagination of the sky by everyone even a small detail such as the nut, metal rod, etc.

04 Site Research & Documentation: The Habitat, Penang Hill Penang Hill is a hill resort comprising a group of peaks on Penang Island, Malaysia. It is located within the Air Itam suburb, 9 km west of the center of George Town. Penang Hill covers several hills, with the highest point at Western Hill which is 833 m (2,733 ft) above sea level. The hill stands out prominently from the lowlands as a hilly and forested area. It was used as a retreat during the British colonial period and is now a popular tourist destination in Penang. Penang Hill is part of Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO as the third Biosphere Reserve in Malaysia and listed in the World Network of Biosphere Reserve (WNBR).

The Habitat Penang Hill offers the most complete and educational Malaysian rainforest experience and is located less than 10 km from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town in Penang. Explore their 1.6 km Nature Trail which is steeped in history as it was first built in the early 1800s by the British East India Company on the edge of a forest reserve protected since 1911. Take in the sights and sounds of the rainforest from Langur Way Canopy Walk 40m off the forest floor. Revel in the 360-degree views of Penang Island and the mainland from Curtis Crest Treetop Walk that allows you to see just how important Penang’s forests are to the health and well-being of urban Penang both as a source of water as well as a green lung.

During this task, we were required to publish a booklet that documented more detailed information about the Penang Hill including the concept of the UNESCO biosphere, Penang Hill biosphere, the history of Penang Hill, zoning of Penang Hill, journey documentation, Building & Planning Authority Guidelines and The Habitats' Building Drawing. For my task, I handled the "Building & Planning Authority Guidelines", "Location & Site Plan Drawing" and "Langur Way Canopy Walk Drawing".

05 Site Reflection: The Flow of the Sky "The Sky is a part of the Atmosphere or Space that is able to be visible by the Observer on the Surface of an Astronomical Object." This is what I feel after I went to The Habitat Penang Hill. The Flow of the Sky is something about the changes or meteorology of the sky. So, the human can receive many natural data through observing the sky such as weather, time, orientation, etc. The different patterns of the sky give different data and messages to the observer.

Other than that, since The Habitat Penang Hill is a high-altitude place, so we allow having many clear views everywhere. When I am standing at the lower point, I feel like the sky is on top of me when I am in the lower point. But when I am on Penang hill, I am at a higher point which means I am the sky for somebody. Maybe I am the Sky for the ants or maybe for George town. Because I am looking down at them just like the sky is looking down at me.

06 Urban Strategies: The Existing Pattern of Penang Hill Penang Hill is part of Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO as the third Biosphere Reserve in Malaysia and listed in the World Network of Biosphere Reserve (WNBR). So, most of the areas are developed and others are been protected. During these urban strategies, I try to analyze and find out the more potential site at the same time without damaging the existing environment. And I study the existing building or man-made structures surrounding Penang Hill and think about the relationship between the man-made and natural, to understand the influence of that.

Other than that, I also study the circulation and accessibility surrounding the site. This study inspired me in the user experience and also gave me some help or gave me some ideas in the choosing a potential site. The main intention is to intervene in the pattern of Penang hill but maintain the existing pattern in Penang Hill. It is quite a contradiction, but it is also a challenges.

07 Urban Intervention: Layering The Penang Hill According to the detailed study for certain purposes, I found out the circulation surrounding the Penang Hill which is the hiking trail, all have the same destination, but those hiking trails cannot provide a completed and loop journey to the users. And also, the cycling trail is only on one side. Another side does not have a cycling trail. Other than that, I found some bald land through the natural pattern analysis. So, I will propose some programs within those bald land and to make there no bald anymore.

On the other hand. for those proposed hiking trails, I would not only propose the trail on the ground, It might also be going under the ground or elevated from the ground. All that can provide a different experience to the users and maximize their vision through the going up and down, movement of viewing angle or viewing point. The proposed programs should be intended. The main program I proposed is the watchtower or guide tower. It is tall and pops out from nature. So, when users are hiking, they wouldn't lost since when they look up to the sky, the tower will be somewhere in their vision. The tower will guide them to their destination which is The Habitat, Penang Hill.

08 Building Strategies: The Natural Power In The Habitat For the building strategies inside The Habitat Penang Hill, I proposed two main sites as my project site for Project 3 which is the site nearby the Langur Way Canopy Walk and the site nearby the cafe area. The reason for me to choose the site nearby the Canopy Walk is because the land is quite huge and there happened a sad case which is the landslide. So, the site itself already has very strong emotions within there. But the weak point of the site is the contour. Because the site is quite slanted, the height from the lowest level to the highest level is around 60 meters. So, it is quite a big challenge for designing a building.

Other than that, the site around the cafe area is more flexible than the last site. The proposed program will be an emotional gallery because the site is the almost end of the existing trail. So, before the end of the journey, the users feel The Habitat through their own senses. And the proposed emotional gallery is a place that allows users to share their feeling and emotion about the journey in The Habitat through art, photography, model making, etc. So, it will allow the users to feel for themselves and also feel for others.

09 Biophilia Architecture: Landslide Memorial Research Centre + Accommodation Landslide Memorial Research Center + Accommodation is a mixed development that is combined cultural, education and residential. The main site can be separated into two parts which are the upper part (within the main road) and the lower part (within The Habitat). The upper part is a Landslide Memorial Center since there happened a serious landslide it cause died of the animals and plants. So, the intention of having a landslide Memorial Center is to provide a place that allows humans to experience and awe of natural power. Humans, animals and plants are so tiny in front of nature's power. We must learn to protect and respect our environment and respect every life.

The lower part is a research area to allow everyone to more understand about the Penang Hill biosphere and proposed an accommodation area to allow the visitor can have a whole day experience with nature in The Habitat. The main accommodation area can be divided into the resort area and the wild surviving area which provided different experiences to the visitors. Other than that, the public area also is quite important since there is not only open to humans, but also to animals. So, the public area can build up the connection between humans and animals. The landslide stone is right under the proposed site. So, I also proposed a public area which is a park to frame out and protect the stone, and also allow the visitors to have close contact with the natural power.
