DREAMING OF LUCIDITY - SOGNANDO LA LUCIDITA’ L´essere umano, fin dalla notte dei tempi, é stato affascinato dal magico e sconosciuto che risiede nei sogni non sazio di quanto avviene nella vita reale. Interi trattati sono stati scritti sul sogno e sulle sue motivazioni, fonti e conseguenze analizzando l´argomento approciandolo dai più svariati punti di vista. Particolari studi sono stati condotti già dagli anni 60 per uno specifico modo di sognare che era stato notato all´interno di gruppi esaminati, alcuni soggetti avevano una speciale peculiarità: oltre a sognare a colori e ricordare con nitidezza inaspettata i propri sogni, asserivano di pilotare i propri personaggi decidendo sia la sceneggiatura che la coreografia, praticamente erano i registi dei propri sogni. Questa capacità é risultata avere molteplici scopi ed effetti, i personaggi dei sogni lucidi hanno il carattere, la forma, la voce che l’onironauta decide di attribuire così come decide quali siano gli scenari ed il copione da recitare. Nel sogno lucido il pilota decide a suo piacimento se le caratteristiche devono combaciare con la realtà oppure se attribuire nuovi parametri applicando trasformazioni che alla fine producono una sorte di “fantasy“, può realizzare i propri desideri e nel contempo essere consapevole del proprio atto creativo . Il sogno lucido risulta particolarmente intenso anche grazie alla durata che, a differenza dei canonici esigui minuti, si può protrarre ed alla scansione del tempo che risulta equivalente a quella reale. In occidente tanti hanno dissertato del „sogno lucido“ tra cui Aristotele, Tommaso D´Aquino, Friedrich Nietzsche; in oriente l´approccio con il sogno lucido é profondamente radicato fin dall’antichità.

Interessante può risultare, per il pubblico, approfondire l´argomento, il „sogno lucido“ può essere indotto attraverso il training al fine di sviluppare una capacità che per alcuni é innata.

L´arte é il mezzo supremo che permette di forgiare la realtà o di riportarla, chiaramente sempre in base all’interpretazione e tecnica propria di ogni singolo artista. L´artista é l´artefice e creatore di visioni più o meno convenzionali, più o meno rispondenti alla realtà oggettiva. Ella/egli elabora tramite l´uso dei colori, dei materiali, delle tecniche un´idea od un´intero concetto decidendo i ruoli e le posizioni ed i tempi. Gli scopi dell’artista sono i più svariati, alcuni possono essere: comunicare emozionalmente ciò che le parole ingarbugliano in sofismi magari non desiderati, oppure esternare le proprie peculiarità intime e desideri nascosti, oppure riportare un ricordo definendo nuovi percorsi ed alterando quanto realmente vissuto. Di fondo, ogni artista desidera rendere noti i propri convincimenti, il proprio punto di vista e di pensiero rispetto a quanto viene vissuto, condividere le passioni e le perplessità, riportare le esperienze proprie od indotte, essere ed immaginare che gli altri possano essere non solo pedine bensì fautori.

Che cosa é l´artista se non l’onironauta che non solo osserva, vive, elabora, produce bensì esiste con lo scopo di comunicare metabolizzando, a sua volta, quanto gli é dato dall’interazione del pubblico che pur delicatamente, soffermandosi e lasciandosi affascinare da un´opera, esprime il proprio pensiero e la propria emozione soggettiva.

Il titolo “Dreaming of Lucidity “ vuole essere per il pubblico stimolo, indotto dalle peculiarità delle singole opere. La cernita delle/gli artiste/i ha seguito il filo conduttore estrapolando dalle singole personalità vari riferimenti e stili di esperienze. La provenienza, estrazione, vita di ogni partecipante é differente rispetto agli altri ed in grado di fornire uno spettro emozionale di argomentazioni ed interpretazioni estetiche.

PETER HIDE - 311065 Fin dal primo momento che ho visionato le opere di Peter Hide, queste hanno attirato la mia attenzione avendo, in qualità di collezionista, un debole per la pop-art. Il nome d'arte è l'avamposto che attrae senza ancora avere visto il materiale. I richiami alla grande pop-art degli anni '60 sono chiari ma Peter Hide, con funambolesca capacità ed evidente freschezza interpretativa, fa proprio il mezzo assoggettandolo ai propri progetti in coreografie sempre sorprendenti.

Le banconote sono il simbolo di diversi poteri che regolano ineluttabilmente la vita di ognuno di noi (almeno nel mondo industrializzato), il denaro rappresenta ciò che permette di raggiungere traguardi, di mostrarsi, di concedersi ciò che altri possono solo sognare, possederlo significa potere non solo sull'ambiente bensì su persone e menti. Questo ultimo aspetto, oscuro e quasi malefico per le insite peculiarità, scatena in Peter Hide un rifiuto: senza vergogna né remore rende schiavo il denaro duplicandolo e crocifiggendolo, bruciandolo, cospargendolo di colore, trattandolo come mera spazzatura e nel contempo proponendolo come una reliquia che nulla può, essendo scevra da magiche sacralità, come manifesto del suo volere di non sottomettersi allo scontato, rimanendo fedele alla natura pura in cui il valore è dato dall'essere e non dall'apparenza, facendo proprio il detto “ Il valore di un uomo si misura dalle poche cose che crea, non dai molti beni che accumula”( Kahlil Gibran).

Peter Hide reinterpreta ironicamente, pur senza offesa, quanto proposto per secoli dalle “Indulgenze”, non più fogli di carta firmati da un potere derivato dal divino bensì pillole o foglietti, confezionati in accattivanti packaging, che promettono, dietro compenso del dovuto, felicità e fortuna; Peter Hide offre un'opera d'arte al posto di una ricevuta di giocata: le probabilità di vincere sono molto simili!

Al di là dell'arguzia le sue opere invitano a riflettere su quanto ruota attorno al denaro, quanti crimini vengono commessi nel suo nome, quante vite e diritti vengono calpestati al fine di appropriarsene inducendo forse a soggettivi cambiamenti.

L'artista dapprima attira, nelle sue performance, con irriverente spudoratezza espositiva, il subdolo interesse del pubblico che inevitabilmente viene abbagliato da mucchi di banconote che distrattamente, senza padrone, cospargono gli ambienti in attesa di essere raccolte; quindi istiga al contatto, al possesso, all'uso non convenzionale di ciò per cui ognuno di noi ha, tristemente ma irrimediabilmente, riverente rispetto ed infine mortifica le banconote calpestandole o buttandole in aria riattribuendo il valore di “carta straccia”. Il risultato è un partecipazione in cui tutti sono coinvolti in un'euforica ebbrezza e durante la quale si manifestano diverse fasi di metabolizzazione interiore, resistere è impossibile anche per la persona più pragmatica poiché è l'occasione per sfogare i propri sentimenti e pensamenti, rispetto al significato del denaro, ma avendo la possibilità non di condannare bensì di giocare a mettere al rogo e distruggere ed accartocciare ciò di cui pensiamo di non potere fare a meno.

DREAMING OF LUCIDITY The human being, since the dawn of time, was fascinated by the magic and strangeness that resides in dreams. Whole treatises have been written about the dream and its motivations, sources and consequences analizing the topic from the most different points of view. Special studies have been conducted since the 60s by looking at specific dreams of examinated groups including some subjects with special peculiarities: in addition to dreams in color and sharpness they unexpectedly remembered their dreams, claimed to drive the characters of their personages and deciding the screenplay and the choreography, practically they were the directors of their own dreams. It was observed that this capability had multiple purposes and effects, the characters of lucid dreams had the temperaments, the forms and the voices that oneironauts decided to award to them, as well as they determined what the scenarios and the scripts are supposed to be. They were the pilots who decided, at their own will and by lucid dreaming, wether the characteristics had to match with reality or if new parameters had to be given by applying transformations that finally produced a sort of "fantasy" (film), thus they could had achieved their wishes and at the same time been fully aware of the own creative act.

The lucid dream is particularly strong thanks to the fact that, compared to the few canonical minutes of standard dreams, they can be prolonged and that the scan time is more or less equivalent to the real time. In the western hemisphere many have dissertated about "lucid dreams" including Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas and Friedrich Nietzsche, compared to the eastern approach where lucid dreaming is deeply rooted in ancient times. So it can be interesting for the audience to check out for more, as lucid dreaming can be induced through training in order to develop a capacity that for some is innate.

Of course Art is the supreme instrument that allows to shape the reality or to talk about it, always based on the interpretation and technique of each single artist. The artists are the creators and makers of visions more or less conventional, more or less suited to the objective reality. They develop a whole idea or a concept deciding the roles and the positions and the times through the use of colors, materials, techniques. The aims of the artists are the most different ones. Some may be: to communicate emotionally and so avoiding accidently unintended sophisms stemming from the use of words; to outsource their intimate peculiarities and hidden desires; to bring up a memory defining new paths and by that altering the experiences of reality. Basically, artists want to share their beliefs, their point of view and thoughts that were lived, to share the passions and perplexities, report their own or induced experiences, to be and imagine that others can be not only pawns but leading actors.

What is the artist if not the oneironaut that not only looks, lives, develops, produces but exists in order to communicate with the public by metabolizing too what comes back from the interaction

with the spectator itself, gently dwelling in front of or being attracted by the artwork, expressing own thoughts and subjective emotions.

The title "Dreaming of Lucidity" wants to be a stimulation to the audience, led by the qualities of those individual artworks. The selection of the artists followed a specific thread by extrapolating from the single individual personality the various references and still-image-experiences. The origin, extraction, life of each participant is very different from each other and provides an emotional spectrum of arguments and aesthetic interpretations.

PETER HIDE - 311065 From the first moment I saw Peter Hide's works they drew my attention, being keen on pop art, as a collector. The “nome de plume” is the outpost that attracts without even watching the artist's materials. The reminders to the great pop art of the 60's are obvious but Peter Hide manages to make the tool his own, by bending it to his will in more and more surprising coreographies, with a tightrope- walker like ability and an interpretative freshness.

The banknotes symbolize the various powers that regulate the life of everybody, at least in the industrialised world; money represents what allows people to achieve their goals, to show off, to allow themselves things that others can just dream of, to possess money means not only power on the environment but also on people and minds. This aspect, dark and almost evil, triggers off Peter Hide's refusal: without shame or regrets he makes the money slave by duplicating it and crucifying it, burning it and sprinkling it with the colour, treating it like sheer garbage, and at the same time proposing it as if it was a relic, that can't do anything, being free from magic sacredness, as a manifesto of his will not to abide to its expectable authority, sticking to the pure nature where the value is to be and not to appear, making his own the saying “the value of a man is measured by the few things he makes, not by the assets he accumulates.”( Kahlil Gibran).

Peter Hide reinterprets ironically, no offence intended, what it has been proposed for centuries by “the Indulgences”, not sheets of paper signed by a divine power but capsules and slips, wrapped up in catchy packagings, that promise happiness and fortune, against payment of what is due.

Peter Hide offers an artwork in place of a bet receipt: the odds of winning are almost the same!

Beyond the wit his works invite to think about all that revolves around money, how many crimes are perpetrated in its name, how many lives and rights are stepped on, in order to make it your own, maybe promtping to changes.

In his performances the artist, with irriverent expositive shamelessness first attracts the sneaky interest of the public that inevitably is allured by heaps of banknotes, that casually, without a owner, are scattered in the area waiting to be picked up; then he instigates the public to touch them, to possess them, to use in an unconventional way what everybody sadly but irreparably respects reverently, and finally he humiliates the banknots by stepping on them or throwing them in the air giving it the value of simply waste paper. The result is an attendance where everybody is involved with an euphoric intoxication and during which various phases are shown of internal process of metabolis; to resist is impossible even for the most pragmatist as this is the occasion where everybody can pour out all the feelings and thoughts over the meaning of money, but with a chance not to condemn it but only to play, and to burn at the stake and destroy and crumple what we think we can't do without.

Il denaro non ha odore per Serge Latouche, esso è strumento barbaro e anonimo di una giustizia meccanica, cumulativa e automatica. Il denaro non assolve e non emana le sofferenze ed il sangue da esso provocato. Esso è denominato da Shakespeare “il grumo di terra maledetta”.

Visibile appare il maligno tragitto verso la decadenza morale e culturale segnata dal denaro nelle opere simboliche di Peter Hide.

Il suo pseudonimo nasce dal connubio di Peter Pan, immagine di un mondo di innocenza e ilarità con Mr. Hide, la parte malvagia del Dottor Jekill. Esso annuncia il suo intento artistico di riprodurre la minaccia del male mediante un ideazione velata da ironia. L’artista denuncia la nostra società contemporanea, qualificata dal denaro, dove l’effimero assurge alla misura di un valore. Con un gesto quotidiano Peter Hide accartoccia il denaro e lo preserva in una scatola, come fosse una reliquia, annullandone il nefasto potere con una semplice impronta.

La dichiarazione di amore deviato è un segno amaro della debolezza umana, vulnerabile innanzi al colore ambiguo dei soldi.

La piccola e portatile dimensione delle opere consente loro di sistemarsi in qualsivoglia spazio e di dialogare con la dinamica della luce. Le opere, scherzi in miniatura, provocano lo spettatore e lo inducono alla riflessione. L’ambivalenza giocosa e seria dei lavori dell’autore è enfatizzata da formati di tele grezze e da spessi telai, arricchiti da schizzi e figure, sì da deformare la solidità di un’opera d’arte e svelarne l’ingannevole apparenza.

According to Serge Latouche Money is odourless, it is a barbaric and anonymous tool of a mechanic, cumulative and automatic justice. Money does not acquit and does not emanate the suffering and the blood it causes. Shakespeare names it “the lump of cursed ground�.

The evil path towards the moral and cultural decay is well shown in Peter Hide’s symbolic works .

His pseudonym stems from the marriage of Peter Pan, an image of an innocent and hilarity wold, with Mr Hide, the dark side of Doctor Jekill. It is meant to artistically reproduce the evil threat through an idea of veiled irony.

The artist denounces our current society, that is defined by money, where the ephemeral becomes an important value. Through an ordinary gesture Peter Hide crumples the money, and puts it in a box, and keeps it as a relic, neutralizing the ominous power with a single fingerprint.

The declaration of deranged love is a bitter prerogative of the human weakness, that becomes vulnerable before the ambiguous color of money.

The small and almost portable size of the works allows to fit any space and interact with the light.

The works, small-scale jokes, are provoking the audience and lead them to think.

The works ambivalence, sometimes joyful and at times serious is emphasized by the rough canvas and the thick frames, enriched by sketches and shapes, in order to distort the solidity of a work and to reveal the deceiving facade.

Soldi, soldi, soldi: da sempre rappresentano la fame dell’uomo. Per alcuni averne tanti per spenderli, per altri per conservarli come trofeo di vittoria.

Franco Crugnola, battezzatosi in arte Peter Hide – 311065, cerca di sdrammatizzare: il suo lavoro artistico io lo vedo come un invito ad allontanare le preoccupazioni, a prendere la vita senza darsi troppi fastidi e queste sue intenzioni sono da accogliere con entusiasmo per vivere al meglio.

Io ricordo la felicità immensa di quei ragazzini che sguazzavano in una sala di una mostra a Varese che era un mare di dollari (ndr. “TO LOVE MONEY OVER EVERYTHING” palazzo Nicolini, Varese 06-21 novembre 2010); gioia immensa anche per chi li stava a guardare. E a me anche l’idea di Peter Hide – 311065 di incapsulare il denaro in scatole o di macchiarlo con pennellate rossastre m’induce a riflessioni allegre e mi solleva da eventuali tristi pensieri.

Si, “amare il denaro sopra ogni cosa” è una frase che fa riflettere per la grande ironia che contiene, per far capire che non si deve essere schiavi del denaro. Esserlo è pericoloso. “Auri sacra fames”, la tremebonda fame dell’oro, si diceva ai tempi della Roma imperiale. E per difendersi i romani inventarono in metallo meno nobile (argento) i “se sterzi”; perché già allora essi erano consapevoli che “se non sterzi” vai a sbattere contro il muro.

Credo proprio che ciò è l’insegnamento che Peter Hide – 311065 ci passa con la sua allegria. Grazie, Hide!

Money, money, money: it has always represented the hunger of men.

Some people want to have loads of it in order to spend it, others just want to keep it as a victory trophy.

Franco Crugnola, christened himself Peter Hide - 311065, is trying to underplay: the way I look at his works is to push all the worries away, to take it easy, and his intentions must be welcomed enthusiastically to live life the best we can.

I remember those kid's immense joy splashing around in a room of an exibition in Varese that was a sea of dollars (note: “TO LOVE MONEY OVER EVERYTHING” - Nicolini Palace - Varese on 0621st November 2010).

The same joy was in the people watching them. And the idea of Peter Hide – 311065 of enclosing the money in boxes or stain it with stroke of reddish colour prompts me to have cheerful thoughts and releases me from the sad ones.

Yep, “to love money over everything” is a sentence that makes one think, due to the great irony that it contains, in order to make people understand that one should not be a slave to money. Being a slave to it is dangerous. “Auri sacra fames”, the hunger for gold, they would say during the times of the Roman Empire; and to protect themselves they invented the less noble metal, the silver, the “se sterzi” “literally if you steer”; because at that time already they were aware that if you don't steer you smash against a wall. I firmly believe that this is the lesson that Peter Hide – 311065 gives us with his being cheerful. Thank you, Hide

PETER HIDE – 311065 LAVORI - WORKS

BLOOD MONEY (SOLDI INSANGUINATI) Questa è una serie di lavori nati dopo le elezioni “forzate” in Iran nei primi mesi del 2009 e ai tumulti finiti nel sangue scaturiti da li a breve.

Tali lavori sono tutti ad essi dedicati. Tutti i lavori denunciano in modo netto ed esplicito gli omicide ed il sangue versato in nome e per conto del denaro. Purtroppo non esistono ideali religiosi o politici, l’unica cosa che conta veramente è la ricchezza.

“AD OGNUNO IL SUO” è una serie di lavori nati e concepiti in stretta correlazione alla serie “blood money” che enfatizza attraverso l’opera il concetto di compartecipazione di colpa che appartiene ad una società di individui, che condivide un pensiero ed un modello economico di sfruttamento dei molti, a favore dell’arricchimento di pochi. Di fatto alle opere dedicate a questo tema, do un forte spessore alla tela, rendo i quadri quasi dei piccoli totem in grado di sostenersi, e rappresento anteriormente un tutto suddiviso in parti minori. Le banconote vengono accostate in modo ordinato, ma poi il senso di compiaciuta armonia che ne deriva, viene infranto dalla gestualità del tratto, rapido ed incalzante, che tinge in modo indelebile le banconote di “colpa”. Quindi nella mia mente affiora il pensiero che ad ognuno viene dato il “suo pezzo di colpa” pur di ottenere la sua parte di “blood money”.

Questa serie è stata poi ripetuta anche dopo questo specifico periodo, quando Israele, Tunisia, Egitto, Libia, Siria, Afghanistan e tutta l’Africa nera, ma anche Cina, Indonesia e Sud America, mostrano col passare del tempo che purtroppo questo modello socio-economico continua ad appartenere a molto. I “blood money” imperversano e a tutti non interessa, basta accumularli!!.

BLOOD MONEY This is a series of works given birth to after the forced elections in Iran over the first months of 2009 and the turmoil ending up in blood soon after it.

Such works are dedicated to that. They denounce explicitly the murders and the blood shed in the name of money.

Unfortunately there are no religious or political ideals, what’s important is to be rich.

“TO EACH HIS OWN” it’s a series of works formed in the mind and closely linked to the blood money series that emphasizes the concept of contributory negligence belonging to a society of people, and that shares an economic thought and model of exploitation of many, the enrichment of few. As a matter of fact, I give the canvas lots of depth, I almost make the canvas small totems able to lean on one another, and locate in front a whole divided into smaller parts. The banknotes are neatly put side by side, but the feeling of pleased harmony coming from them is suddenly broken by the rapid and urgent stroke, which stains the banknotes with “guilt”. Therefore the thought that everybody is given their piece of guilt just to obtain their part of “blood money” crops up in my mind.

This series was also repetead after this period, when Israel, Tunisia, Egypt, Libia, Siria, Afghanistan and all the Black Africa and also Cina and Indonesia and South America show that as time goes by unfortunately this socio-economic model belongs to many. The “blood money” is all over us and people are not concerned about anything else, what’s important to them is accumulate it!!

NEGAZIONE Bruciare la bandiera di uno stato significa bruciare uno stato, significa voler negare totalmente una cultura, il simbolo del senso dell’unità nazionale che va in cenere È un gesto di una gravità simbolica incontestabile, che si potrebbe definire ultimativa: chi brucia una bandiera nazionale "brucia" un popolo.

E bruciare il denaro, simbolo non di una nazione ma di un sistema economico “malato”, “deviato” cosa mi rappresenta?, cosi come bruciare una bandiera è un atto vile e anarchico, Peter Hide al contrario, bruciando i soldi attua una ribellione coraggiosa mettendo in discussione tutto il sistema capitalistico contemporaneo. Questi lavori, perdendo la scanzonata irriverenza tipica dell’artista, perdendo l’aspetto ludico e giocoso, caricano ancor più la serietà del tema rappresentato. La situazione è drammatica, bisogna cambiare le persone, bisogna cambiare la mentalità dominante della società capitalistica ed arrivistica del mondo contemporaneo. Bisogno passare ad amare sempre più le persone e sempre meno il denaro.

Amo i soldi non per il potere/ricchezza che da esso ne deriva, ma per la tranquillità interiore che da esso scaturisce in una società attuale dove i valori autentici sono totalmente rovesciati.

DENIAL Burning a flag of a State means burning the state itself, totally deny a culture, and the symbol of the national unity burnt to ashes. It is an indisputably serious matter on a symbolic point of view.

This could be defined as ultimate: those who burn a national flag, burn their people. And what does burning the money as the symbol not of a nation but rather of a sick, deranged economical system represent?

If burning a flag is a vile and anarchic act, Peter Hide, on the contrary, by burning the money carries out a brave rebellion and challenges the contemporary capitalistic system.

These works, by losing the easy going irreverence that is typical of the artist, and losing the recreational and playful features, represent the theme even more seriously.

The situation is dramatic, people need changing, contemporary word dominant mentality of the capitalistic society needs changing as well. It is necessary to love people better and better, and the money less and less..

I love money not because of the power/wealth coming from it, but rather because of the serenity inside that comes from it in a current society where the real values are completely reversed.

AMARE I SOLDI SOPRA OGNI COSA - RELIQUIARINon voglio rappresentare graficamente o pittoricamente la povertà, la violenza fisica o psicologica, il degrado ambientale, ma neppure la bellezza generata solo ed unicamente dalla manipolazione della ricchezza, la sensazione di potenza quasi divina ed il sogno di felicità, ma voglio far riflettere su che cosa genera ciò per cui tutti noi ci affanniamo e spesso viviamo.

Per questo utilizzo come “materia pittorica” non i colori o la grafia, ma le riproduzioni di banconote stesse, che scelgo con cura, soffermandomi sulle valute che maggiormente evocano in me l'immagine della potenza economica e del sistema capitalistico (Dollari Americani, Euro, Franchi Svizzeri) e lo “accumulo”, in un gesto che fa parte ormai della nostra vita quotidiana.

E’ proprio in questo momento, dove tutto appare razionalmente controllato che affiora in me il gesto di ribellione: lo accartoccio volutamente, quasi in un gesto di sopraffazione e di rivincita interiore, e lo metto in scatola, quasi come un prodotto commerciale, a proteggermi dalla sua influenza, e in modo tale da creare uno spazio di distanza e di riflessione tra me e ciò che rappresenta “lui”.

Ed allora ritorno con la mente a tutto quello che i reliquiari mi ricordano, alla devozione che hanno suscitato o suscitano ancora in noi, alla loro capacità di evocazione del potere divino. Allora penso che farò della mia opera una sorta di reliquiario primordiale, di legno, fatto anche a mano, come veniva anticamente fatto e per il gioco degli opposti gli appongo la mia impronta, per ricordare che in questo reliquiario non c'è nulla di divino, ma solo la debolezza dell'uomo.

Lo chiudo con del materiale trasparente, proprio come in un reliquiario prezioso, come in una vetrina in cui il prodotto esposto è ambito da tanti, ma anche come in uno scrigno, verso un cammino pericoloso che stiamo percorrendo e per enfatizzare il "mal scritto" e quanto tutto può negare l'apparenza delle cose, gli dichiaro con un carattere volutamente spigoloso il mio amore ed il mio proselitismo”.

TO LOVE MONEY OVER EVERYTHING - RELIQUARYI don’t mean to depict poverty, physical and psychological violence, the environmental decay, graphically or in a pictorial way, but I don’t want to the beauty generated only by manipulating affluence, the almost divine feeling of power and the dream of happiness, either. What I want to do is make you ponder on what we live for and bustle about. That’s why I don’t use handwriting or colours as a pictorial subject but I rather prefer the reproduction of banknotes carefully chosen, lingering over the currency that makes me think about economic power and capitalistic system such as American Dollars, Euro, Swiss Franc and stockpile it, an action that is part of our day- in day-out life. And it is at that precise moment, where everything seems to be under control, that my rebellion comes to the surface: I crumple it on purpose, almost a gesture showing that I can overcome the feeling and take revenge and put it in a box, as if it was a commercial product, so that I can protect myself from its bad influence in order to create a distance between myself and what it represents. And then I go back with my mind to what the reliquaries remind me of, the devotion they provoke, their ability to conjure up the divine power.

Then I think that my work will be a sort of primordial reliquary, handmade and wooden, as it was historically carried out, and for the sake of the opposites game I’ll put my fingerprint, in order to show that what is in this reliquary is just the weakness of the human being, and nothing divine.

Subsequently I wrap it with a transparent matter, as it was a precious reliquary, like a window where the product displayed is sought- after by loads of people, but also like a treasure chest, towards a dangerous path we are taking. In order to emphasize the “written evil” and all that can deny the appearance of things, I declare my love and my proselytism with a purposefully edgy character to it.

TO LOVE MONEY (AMARE I SOLDI) In questa serie di lavori che ho chiamato “to love money” ho raccolto un gruppo di quadri di piccolo formato che misurano al massimo 20 x 20 cm. (tranne alcune rarità) e molto colorati.

Si tratta di realizzazioni bidimensionali con percezione però tridimensionale, create dalla “stratificazione del denaro” rappresentata in modo molto ordinato e ammiccante, che si accumula per sovrapposizione, fisso a generare una superficie finale che va a dialogare direttamente con le scritte in rilievo. Queste ultime sono realizzate con colori molto accesi, in contrasto netto con la superficie e spesso sono visibili anche al buio, come il pensiero rivolto al denaro, che ci accompagna il giorno, ma spesso anche la notte.

L’effetto è quello di un quadro scultura, un dolce “bon bon” capace di auto sostenersi con uno spessore proprio, in grado di dialogare con la luce e lo spazio circostante e che rappresenta la dolce tentazione che il denaro esercita su di noi e nella nostra vita.

In molti di questi lavori, oltre alla presenza della mia impronta digitale (a garanzia di autenticità), ho inserito lateralmente dei cuori realizzati con oggetti di recupero, scultorei e metallici, delle “accumulazioni” prelevate dal mondo inerte della tecnologia. E’ un inserimento in contrasto con la dolcezza dell’aspetto, che ben si armonizza con la superficie del bordo che lo ospita su cui il colore sembra colare, come una glassa sul bordo di una torta. Una sorta di rappresentazione del pensiero umano, attraverso le macchine che ha creato, che convive e che cerca di trovare un equilibrio con la dolcezza persuasiva del denaro e con le dinamiche da esso create.

TO LOVE MONEY In this series of works that I named “to love money” I gathered a bunch of very colourful smallsized paintings, 20 x 20 cm max, apart from some rarities.

It is about bidimensional works which are perceived as three dimensional, though, because of the money stratification, represented in a tidy and catchy manner. The money is accumulated by overlapping it, and generates a final surface which interacts with the embossed inscriptions.

The latter are made with high colours, opposite to the surface and very often visible in the dark, the same as thinking about money, which accompanies us during the day, but often at night.

The effect is that of a painting-sculpture work, a sweet candy capable of maintaining itself, with a depth of its own, able to interact with the light and the space. It represents the sweet temptation that money exerts in our lives.

In a lot of these works, besides my fingerprints (to grant genuineness) I have inserted some hearts sideways, made with recycled, sculptural and metallic things, some accumulation from the still world of technology. It is an insertion in contrast to the sweet appearance, which blends perfectly with the surface of the rim where it is placed and it seems that the colour is dripping, like an icing on a cake.

A sort of a representation of the human thought, through the machines that it has made, which is trying to live and find a balance with the money persuasive sweetness and the dynamics that it has created.

SAFE (CASSAFORTE) Con le mie ultime opere “SAFE” ho fatto una riflessione sulla mancanza di sicurezza e stabilità che pervade la nostra esperienza umana.

Immaginando un oggetto di uso comune capace di trasformare il senso di protezione e di custodia, ho pensato alla cassaforte, oggetto emblematico, accompagnato sempre da una gestualità teatrale, rassicurante e dal vago sapore di oggetto post industriale.

Improvvisamente, però, nella mia immaginazione quest’oggetto rassicurante, appare “violato” e “violabile”, impossibile da chiudere, incapace di proteggere il denaro e il senso di sicurezza e potere che deriva dal suo possesso. Ad un tratto ai miei occhi appare inconsistente di fronte al mutare degli eventi che ci circonda.

Il suo sportello pesante che appare leggero e il denaro in essa contenuto, invade lo spazio circostante.

E’ quasi un mutamento improvviso, impossibile da contenere, la stabilità del possedere denaro diventa ad un tratto instabilità ed acquista una sua forza invasiva.

Basta guardare le mie opere studio-progetto per vedere un denaro quasi scultoreo, presente, materiale che passa visivamente da una dimensione bidimensionale ad una tridimensionale, quasi a voler dire “nulla si può proteggere” e considerare “immutabile all’infinito”.

Ogni cosa è, o può essere, in simbiosi, la cassaforte con il suo denaro. Ma non lo rimarrà per sempre.

SAFE With my last works named “SAFE” I very carefully thought over the lack of stability and safety that we experience as human beings.

By imagining a common use object capable of changing the feeling of protection and custody, always accompanied by some theatrical and reassuring gestures, a post industrial-like product, I conjured up the image of a safe – emblematic object.

All of a sudden, though, in my imagination, such a reassuring object seems to be violated and easy to be profaned, impossible to lock, incapable of protecting the money and the feeling of safety and power coming from having it. Out of the blue my eyes look at it as if it was insubstantial before the changing of the events.

Its door is heavy but seems to be light, and the money in it invades the space all over it.

Almost a sudden change, impossible to control, the stability coming from possessing the money turns into instability and gets an invasive force on its own.

Just looking at my study-project works one can see that money is almost a sculpture, always there, it’s material, and goes from a two dimensional to a three dimensional, almost as if it wanted to say that nothing can be protected, and regarded as unchangeable ad infinitum.

Everything is or can be, for that matter, like joined at the hip, the safe with its money. But it won’t be forever.

BAGNO DI SOLDI Chi non vorrebbe tutte le mattine fare un bagno in una piscina piena di banconote proprio come Mr. Paperon De Paperoni?

L’idea nasce da questo. Una vasca da collocare nelle piazze importanti d’Italia piena di banconote a cui viene garantito l’accesso a tutti per un BENEFICO bagno. Da questo bagno le persone escono contente e gratificate... se basta così poco...

BATH OF MONEY Who wouldn't like to have a bath in a swimming pool full of banknotes like Scrooge every morning?

This is where the idea comes from: a tub full of banknotes in the main squares of Italy where everybody is granted access for a SALUTARY bath, after which people come out happy and fulfilled... if it takes just that...

PETER HIDE - 311065 Artista Ho scelto diversi anni fa il nome d’arte PETER HIDE 311065 (mi chiamo Franco Crugnola) derivandolo dall’ossimoro tra PETER PAN (noto sempiterno bambino buono) e Mr. HYDE (la parte brutale e “cattiva” del Dottor Jekyll). I due nomi hanno la stessa notorietà e rappresentano il primo il bene, l’innocenza, la purezza e la bellezza, il secondo il male, la cruenta e la forza bruta. Come nel romanzo di R. Stevenson ove la lotta impari che oppone il bene e il male tra Jekyll a Hyde, mette in gioco temi di grande suggestione, la metamorfosi e il doppio, lo specchio e il sosia, fino a toccare le corde più segrete e inconfessate dell'animo umano, cosi nei miei lavori cerco di ricreare il male che può prevaricarci attraverso un’immagine allegra e scanzonata.

Cerco di rappresentare attraverso immagini che fanno parte del nostro vivere quotidiano, ed apparentemente concilianti, gli opposti che esse stesse rappresentano, e di aprire nella mente dello spettatore che vorrà approfondirne la lettura, una porta immaginaria verso il pericolo della soprafazione dell'effimero.

In una società contemporanea, dove tutto è misurabile dal denaro, e dove spesso si ha la sensazione che non solo il materiale ne sia soggiogato, ma anche l'immateriale, la parte più unica che contraddistingue l'individuo, il denaro, ha per me il valore simbolico di rappresentare il pericolo di una vasta decadenza culturale, e per opposto il degrado che la sua mancanza ne produce.

Non voglio rappresentare graficamente la povertà, la violenza fisica o psicologica, il degrado ambientale, ma neppure la bellezza generata solo ed unicamente dalla manipolazione della ricchezza, la sensazione di potenza quasi divina ed il sogno di felicità, ma voglio far riflettere su che cosa genera ciò per cui tutti noi ci affanniamo, viviamo e a volte moriamo: Il denaro.

Lo scelgo con cura, specialmente nelle valute che maggiormente evocano in me l'immagine della potenza economica e del sistema capitalistico.

Lo accumulo, in un gesto che fa parte ormai della nostra vita quotidiana, lo accartoccio volutamente in segno di ribellione, quasi in un gesto di sopraffazione e di rivincita interiore e lo metto in scatola, quasi come un prodotto o una reliquia della società contemporanea e per il gioco degli opposti gli appongo la mia impronta, per ricordare che in questo reliquiario non c'è nulla di divino ma solo la debolezza dell'uomo e gli dedico con un carattere volutamente spigoloso il mio amore ed il mio proselitismo.

Il formato dei singoli lavori è ridotto, leggero, trasportabile, spesso mai superiori al 50 x 50 ed hanno una loro percezione tridimensionale e materica, che interagiscono con la luce e con l'ambiente circostante, che hanno una loro presenza reale e che si compongono in una sorta di spazio devozionale nel tentativo di coinvolgere lo spettatore in un momento di riflessione ludica e scanzonata.

I lavori sono eseguiti su ritagli di tele grezze, senza spessore alcuno, o tele montate su spessi telai che fanno da supporto a scritte, didascalie e a volte ulteriori figure che soverchiano l’ordine dello stesso quadro. I telai sono eseguiti da me, in modo grezzo, irregolare, a volte cucendo le tele, assemblando ritagli, unendo legni. Le tele in siffatta maniera enfatizzano il “mal fatto”, o meglio in questo caso il “mal scritto” e ancora una volta contravviene in antitesi la forma del quadro classico (regolare, ben fatto da incorniciare in modo regolare) a quanto appunto scritto: il tutto nega l’apparenza, il tutto è il contrario di tutto, quello che sembra e il suo opposto.

PETER HIDE - 311065 Artist Several years ago I chose PETER HIDE 311065 as my stage name (my real name is Franco Crugnola) deriving from the oxymoron between PETER PAN (the eternal good kid) and Mr HIDE (the brutal and dark side of Mr Jekyll). The two names are both very well known, the former representing the good, innocence, purity and beauty, and the latter the evil, the cruelty and the brute strength.

As in R. Stevenson novel, where the uneven struggle opposing Mr Jekyll (evil) and Mr Hide (good) puts at stake evocative issues like the metamorphosis and the double, the mirror and the look-alike, up to the striking of the more intimate chord, so in my work I try and recreate the evil that can prevail upon us through an easy going and lively image. I try and represent the opposites through our day-to- day life images, apparently in harmony, and to open a sort of imaginary door towards the danger of the overwhelming ephemeral in the mind of the viewer that wishes to read deeply into it. In the current society, where everything is measured by money, where it often feels that not only is the matter subdued, but also the intangible, the part that mostly defines the human being, namely the money, to me represents the danger of a vast cultural decay, and by contrast the decline caused by being without it.

Each of my works is small sized, light, transportable, often not bigger that 50x50 and has a 3D feature interacting with the light and the surrounding environment, that really is in existence, and are composed in a sort of devoted space aiming at involving the viewer to ponder upon things in a playful and easy going way.

The works are carried out on cutting of rough, thin canvases or mounted on thick chassis that back up writings, captions, and sometimes further figures that overpower the order of the picture itself. The canvases are carried out by me, roughly, unevenly, sometimes sewing them, assembling cuttings, and putting wood together. So these handmade canvases emphasize the “made evil”, or the “written evil”, which is the case here, and once again the classical standard picture (regular, well done, to be framed easily) is in contrast with what has been written: the whole denies the appearance, the whole is the contrary of the whole, what seems to be and the opposite.
