PETER HIDE 311065 Ich habe vor vielen Jahren den Künstlernamen PETER HIDE gewählt (ich heiße Franco Crugnola), zusammengesetzt aus PETER PAN (bekannt als das lebenslang gute Kind) und Mr. HYDE (die brutale und böse Seite von Dr. Jekyll). Beide Namen sind gleich bekannt und repräsentieren das Gute, die Unschuld, Reinheit und Schönheit bzw. das Böse, Grausamkeit und rohe Kraft. Wie in dem Roman von R. Stevenson, in dem der ungleiche Kampf zwischen Gut und Böse sehr suggestive Themen ins Spiel bringt, Metamorphose und Doppeltes, Spiegel und Doppelgänger, bis zu den geheimsten Seiten der menschlichen Seele, so versuche auch ich in meinen Arbeiten das Böse darzustellen, das uns übervorteilen kann durch ein fröhliches und unbeschwertes Bild.

Ich versuche durch scheinbar versöhnliche Bilder, die zu unserem täglichen Leben gehören, die Gegenteile darzustellen, die diese repräsentieren, und dem Betrachter, der die Lektüre vertiefen möchten, eine imaginäre Tür zu öffnen zu der Gefahr der Überwältigung des Vergänglichen.

In der heutigen Gesellschaft, in der alles mit Geld messbar ist, und in der man oft den Eindruck hat, dass nicht nur das Materielle, sondern auch das Geistige diesem unterworfen sind, hat das Geld, das die Individuen unterscheidet, für mich den Wert, eine große kulturelle Dekadenz zu repräsentieren, und im Gegensatz dazu den Verfall, den sein Mangel erzeugt.

Ich möchte nicht die Armut, physische oder psychische Gewalt, die Zerstörung der Umwelt grafisch oder bildlich darstellen, aber auch nicht die Schönheit, die nur durch Manipulation von Reichtum entsteht, eine fast göttliche Macht oder den Traum vom Glück. Ich möchte vielmehr zum Nachdenken darüber anregen, was das bewirkt, wofür wir uns ängstigen und wofür wir leben und manchmal sterben : das Geld.

Ich wähle es sorgfältig aus, besonders in den Währungen, die für mich das Bild wirtschaftlicher Macht des kapitalistischen Systems hervorrufen.

Ich häufe es an, mit einer Geste, die mittlerweile zu unserem täglichen Leben gehört, ich zerknülle es gewollt als Zeichen der Rebellion, fast als ein Zeichen der Überwältigung und der inneren Revanche, ich stecke es in eine Schachtel, fast wie ein Produkt oder eine Reliquie der heutigen Gesellschaft und mit dem Spiel der Gegensätze drücke ich ihm meinen Stempel auf, um daran zu erinnern dass in diesem Reliquienschrein nichts Göttliches ist sondern nur menschliche Schwäche, und ich gebe ihm bewusst einen kantigen Charakter als Zeichen meiner Liebe und meiner Anhängerschaft.

Das Format der einzelnen Werke ist klein, leicht, gut zu transportieren, nicht mehr als 50 x 50 cm, die Wahrnehmung ist dreidimensional und vom Material bestimmt, die Arbeiten interagieren mit dem Licht und der Umgebung , sie haben eine reale Präsenz und sie setzen sich in einem andächtigen Raum zusammen in dem Versuch, den Betrachter in einen Moment der spielerischen und burschikosen Nachdenklichkeit einzubeziehen.

Die Arbeiten sind auf Reststücken von unbehandeltem Stoff ausgeführt, ohne aufzutragen, oder auf Stoff, der auf dicke Rahmen gespannt ist, die als Untergrund für Aufschriften, Widmungen und manchmal andere Figuren dienen, die die Ordnung des Bildes selbst übertreffen. Die Rahmen fertige ich selbst an, lasse sie roh und unregelmäßig, manchmal nähe ich Stoff zusammen, setze Stücke zusammen und verbinde Holzteile. Die so hergestellte Leinwand unterstreicht das “schlecht Gearbeitete”, oder besser in diesem Fall das “schlecht Geschriebene”, und noch einmal erscheint im Gegensatz dazu das klassische Bild (gerade, gut gemacht und gut zu rahmen), wie

eben geschrieben. Das alles verneint den Schein, alles und das Gegenteil von allem, das was scheint und sein Gegenteil.

PETER HIDE 311065 Several years ago I chose PETER HIDE as my stage name (my real name is Franco Crugnola) deriving from the oxymoron between PETER PAN (the eternal good kid) and Mr HIDE (the brutal and dark side of Mr Jekyll). The two names are both very well known, the former representing the good, innocence, purity and beauty, and the latter the evil, the cruelty and the brute strength.

As in R. Stevenson novel, where the uneven struggle opposing Mr Jekyll (evil) and Mr Hide (good) puts at stake evocative issues like the metamorphosis and the double, the mirror and the look-alike, up to the striking of the more intimate chord, so in my work I try and recreate the evil that can prevail upon us through an easy going and lively image. I try and represent the opposites through our day-to- day life images, apparently in harmony, and to open a sort of imaginary door towards the danger of the overwhelming ephemeral in the mind of the viewer that wishes to read deeply into it. In the current society, where everything is measured by money, where it often feels that not only is the matter subdued, but also the intangible, the part that mostly defines the human being, namely the money, to me represents the danger of a vast cultural decay, and by contrast the decline caused by being without it.

I don’t mean to depict poverty, physical and psychological violence, the environmental decay, graphically or in a pictorian way, but I don’t want to represent the beauty generated only by manipulating affluence, the almost divine feeling of power and the dream of happiness, either. What I want to do is make you ponder on what we bustle about and die for: money. I chose it carefully, especially the currency that makes me think about economic power and capitalistic system. I stockpile it, an action that is part of our day- in day-out life, then my rebellion comes to the surface and I crumple it on purpose, almost a gesture showing that I can overcome the feeling and take revenge and put it in a box, as if it was a product of the current society and for the sake of the opposites game I’ll put my fingerprint, in order to show that what is in this reliquary is just the weakness of the human being, and nothing divine, and I declare my love and my proselytism with a purposefully edgy character to it.

Each of my works is small sized, light, transportable, often not bigger that 50x50 and has a 3D feature interacting with the light and the surrounding environment, that really is in existence, and are composed in a sort of devoted space aiming at involving the viewer to ponder upon things in a playful and easy going way.

The works are carried out on cutting of rough, thin canvases or mounted on thick chassis that back up writings, captions, and sometimes further figures that overpower the order of the picture itself. The canvases are carried out by me, roughly, unevenly, sometimes sewing them, assembling cuttings, and putting wood together. So these handmade canvases emphasize the “made evil”, or the “written evil”, which is the case here, and once again the classical standard picture (regular, well done, to be framed easily) is in contrast with what has been written: the whole denies the appearance, the whole is the contrary of the whole, what seems to be and the opposite.

ABLEUGNUNG Die Flagge eines Staates zu verbrennen, bedeutet, diesen Staat selbst zu verbrennen, es bedeutet, eine Kultur vollständig verleugnen zu wollen, das Symbol des Empfindens für die nationale Einheit wird zu Asche. Es ist eine Geste von unbestreitbarer symbolischer Bedeutsamkeit, die man als ultimativ bezeichnen könnte: wer eine Nationalflagge verbrennt, “verbrennt” ein Volk.

Und was bedeutet es, Geld zu verbrennen, nicht das Symbol einer Nation, sondern eines “kranken”, “fehlgelenkten” wirtschaftlichen Systems?

So wie das Verbrennen einer Flagge eine anarchistische und niederträchtige Aktion ist, ist im Gegensatz dazu das Verbrennen von Geld eine mutige Rebellion, die das gesamte heutige kapitalistische System in Frage stellt.

Diese Arbeiten, die die fröhliche Respektlosigkeit des Künstlers und den spielerischen Aspekt verloren haben, stellen das Thema umso ernster dar.

Die Situation ist dramatisch, man muss die Menschen ändern, man muss die vorherrschende Mentalität unserer kapitalistischen und karriereorientierten Gesellschaft ändern. Man muss dazu übergehen, immer mehr die Menschen und immer weniger das Geld zu lieben.

Ich liebe das Geld nicht wegen Macht und Reichtum, sondern wegen der inneren Ruhe die daraus entsteht in der heutigen Gesellschaft, in der die echten Werte völlig umgekehrt sind.

Die soziale Antwort auf jede Frage ist immer nur die eine: das Geld. Für Geld begehen wir jede Schandtat und jede vorstellbare Gemeinheit. Für Geld plagen wir uns , leiden wir und prostituieren wir uns. Moralische, ethische und religiöse Werte existieren nicht mehr. Wenn es stimmt, dass die Antwort auf jede Frage das Geld ist, dann werden Probleme mit Geld gelöst….so hat eine entweihende Aktion ein “Heilmittel” geschaffen, das Geld. Ich stecke es in Tüten, ich gebe ihm das Bild eines “Produktes” und verkaufe es wie jeden anderen Konsumartikel mit einem ansprechenden Etikett, kommerziell begehrenswert. In der Vorstellung als ein Absurdum, in einem Geschäft, ausgestellt wie irgendein anderes Produkt, erscheint das Gut im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes: das Geld. Mit Geld kauft man Geld.

Burning a flag of a State means burning the state itself, totally deny a culture, and the symbol of the national unity burnt to ashes. It is an indisputably serious matter on a symbolic point of view. This could be defined as ultimate: those who burn a national flag, burn their people. And what does burning the money as the symbol not of a nation but rather of a sick, deranged economical system represent?

If burning a flag is a vile and anarchic act, Peter Hide, on the contrary, by burning the money carries out a brave rebellion and challenges the contemporary capitalistic system.

These works, by losing the easy going irreverence that is typical of the artist, and losing the recreational and playful features, represent the theme even more seriously.

The situation is dramatic, people need changing, contemporary word dominant mentality of the capitalistic society needs changing as well. It is necessary to love people better and better, and the money less and less..

I love money not because of the power/wealth coming from it, but rather because of the serenity inside that comes from it in a current society where the real values are completely reversed.

GELD ÜBER ALLES LIEBEN – RELIQUIENSCHREIN Ich möchte nicht die Armut, physische oder psychische Gewalt, die Zerstörung der Umwelt grafisch oder bildlich darstellen, aber auch nicht die Schönheit, die nur durch Manipulation von Reichtum entsteht, eine fast göttliche Macht oder den Traum vom Glück. Ich möchte vielmehr zum Nachdenken darüber anregen, was das bewirkt, wofür wir uns ängstigen und wofür wir oft leben.

Deshalb benutze ich als “Material zum Malen” keine Farben oder Schriftzeichen, sondern Reproduktionen von Banknoten, die ich sorgfältig auswähle und dabei die Währungen bevorzuge, die für mich das Symbol für wirtschaftliche Macht und das kapitalistische System sind (US-Dollar, Euro, Schweizer Franken). Dieses Material “häufe ich an”, eine Geste, die für uns mittlerweile zum täglichen Leben gehört.

Und genau in diesem Moment, in dem alles rational kontrolliert erscheint, kommt in mir eine Geste der Rebellion zum Tragen: ich zerknülle die Banknoten, fast als ob ich sie überwältigen wollte, wie in einer inneren Revanche, und dann stecke ich sie in eine Schachtel, fast wie irgendein kommerzielles Produkt, um mich vor ihrem Einfluss zu schützen. So schaffe ich räumlichen Abstand und Platz zum Nachdenken zwischen mir und dem, was das Material repräsentiert.

Und dann denke ich daran zurück, an was mich Reliquienschreine erinnern, an die Frömmigkeit, die sie in uns erweckt haben oder noch erwecken, an ihre Fähigkeit, die göttliche Macht zu beschwören. Dann denke ich, dass ich aus meiner Arbeit einen ursprünglichen Reliquienschrein machen werde, aus Holz, auch handgemacht wie früher. Und für das Spiel der Gegensätze drücke ich ihm meinen Stempel auf, um daran zu erinnern, dass in diesem Reliquienschrein nichts Göttliches ist, sondern nur menschliche Schwäche.

Ich verschließe ihn mit transparentem Material, wie bei einem wertvollen Reliquienschrein, wie bei einer Vitrine, bei der das ausgestellte Produkt von vielen begehrt wird, aber auch wie ein Schatzkästchen, auf einen gefährlichen Weg zu, den wir gehen. Um das “schlecht Geschriebene” zu unterstreichen und alles, das den Anschein der Dinge abstreiten kann, erkläre ich ihm mit einen gewollt schroffen Charakter meine Liebe und meine Anhängerschaft.

That’s why I don’t use handwriting or colours as a pictorial subject but I rather prefer the reproduction of banknotes carefully chosen, lingering over the currency that makes me think about economic power and capitalistic system such as American Dollars, Euro, Swiss Franc and stockpile it, an action that is part of our day- in day-out life. And it is at that precise moment, where everything seems to be under control, that my rebellion comes to the surface: I crumple it on purpose, almost a gesture showing that I can overcome the feeling and take revenge and put it in a box, as if it was a commercial product, so that I can protect myself from its bad influence in order to create a distance between myself and what it represents. And then I go back with my mind to what the reliquaries remind me of, the devotion they provoke, their ability to conjure up the divine power.

Then I think that my work will be a sort of primordial reliquary, handmade and wooden, as it was historically carried out, and for the sake of the opposites game I’ll put my fingerprint, in order to show that what is in this reliquary is just the weakness of the human being, and nothing divine.

Subsequently I wrap it with a transparent matter, as it was a precious reliquary, like a window where the product displayed is sought- after by loads of people, but also like a treasure chest, towards a dangerous path we are taking.

In order to emphasize the “written evil” and all that can deny the appearance of things, I declare my love and my proselytism with a purposefully edgy character to it.

MONEY MARKET ICH ERNÄHRE FÜR DEN GEIST Die soziale Antwort auf jede Frage ist eine und immer nur eine: das Geld.

Das Geld lässt uns von jeder unvorstellbarer Niedertracht und jeder Niedrigkeit beflecken. Wegen Geld verzweifeln wir und leiden wir, für das Geld prostituieren wir uns. Die moralischen, ethischen und religiösen Werte existieren nicht mehr. Wenn es stimmt, dass die Antwort auf jede Frage das Geld ist, so löst man mit dem Geld alle Probleme…….. So stell ich mit einer Schändungsaktion ein Abhilfe-Produkt her, das Geld selber. Ich packe es ein, kennzeichne es mit dem Image „Produkt“ und verkaufe es wie jede andere Gebrauchsware mit einer hübschen, poppigen, anziehenden Etikette. Gedacht wie etwas Absurdes; in einem Laden, ausgestellt wie jedes andere Produkt, erscheint die exzellente Ware: das Geld. Mit Geld kauft man Geld.

MONEY MARKET – FOOD FOR SPIRIT The social answer to every question is alone and only one: the money.

Money makes us stain of every iniquity and of every unimaginable lowness. For the money we damn us and we suffer, for the money we prostitute there. The moral, ethical and religious values don't exist anymore. If it is true that the answer to every question is the money with the money the problem he resolves….. It is so that with an desecrating action I create a product “remedy”, the same money. I put it into bags, identifiable with an image “produced” and I sell it as an any other consumer good with a tempting labels, pop, commercially desirable.
