POINT PLEASANT BEACH and OFFSHORE POWER BOAT RACING... A THRILLING 40-YEAR TRADITION! Offshore Power Boat Racing has a long history all along the Jersey Shore, and no place has a greater connection than Point Pleasant Beach! Today, the Point Pleasant Beach Offshore Grand Prix is the kick-off to an eight-race circuit sanctioned by the Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) and produced by the NJ Offshore Power Boat Racing Association (NJOPRA). The race reflects a long tradition, and it stirs memories for people from Point Pleasant Beach that invariably bring a smile. During the 1970’s there was probably no single powerboat race more famous than The Benihana Offshore Grand Prix, known as the Indy 500 of Offshore Racing. Held mid-week in July, the race attracted thousands of fans who looked forward excitedly to the event every year. Steven Reid, now the Mayor of Point Pleasant Beach, grew up with a front row seat, as his mother was a Council Woman and avidly supported the race in Point Pleasant. Many local events surrounded the race, “even a beauty pageant!” says Reid. “And, of course, the boat parade was always a highlight. One year, the Budweiser Clydesdales even came to town. Anyone who grew up here will remember the excitement!” Over the years, the race name changed as new sponsors stepped up. At various times, the race was known as The Hennessey Offshore Grand Prix, The Benihana Offshore Grand Prix, The Ray Catena Offshore Grand Prix, The New Jersey Offshore Grand Prix, The War at the Shore and the Jenkinson’s Offshore Grand Prix. Major sponsors included Budweiser, Geico, and SeaTow. In 2009, the race moved to Atlantic City, but in 2016 Mayor Reid worked with NJOPRA to restore the Grand Prix to its original home in Point Pleasant Beach. With the help of Jersey Mike’s, Norwegian Cruise Lines, the Point Pleasant Beach Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce, and many others, the Point Pleasant Beach Offshore Grand Prix is now in its third year, and growing rapidly. “I loved watching the races with my grandparents as a young boy, and so did many others. We wanted to bring back it back. It’s a great event for our community, for our businesses and for racing fans.” he says. “The weekend before Memorial Day seems to be just right, kicking the summer season off with a bang!” NJOPRA has been the host club since racing started in Point Pleasant Beach and today, as a very active club with over 100 members, it is working tirelessly to return the tradition of offshore racing to the Jersey Shore. The Grand Prix will attract more than 30 boats, and require over 100 volunteers on land, on the water, and as part of the medical crews. Volunteers man the pace boats, the turns, and the dive boats, helping with timing, running, the starts and the finish. The race itself has changed over time. In the 1970’s the Benihana course was over 200 miles long, running laps from NY’s Fire Island to Seaside Heights NJ. One lap was about 80 miles. For the spectators, the boats came by about once an hour and often were visible only three or four times along the course. Today, the race course is smaller, shorter and closer to land, reflecting the many ways in which racing and the boats have changed. The boats speed along a small 4 mile oval that is as close to Point Pleasant Beach as possible. Since the beach drops off quickly, the boats usually run within 150 feet of the surf. Even the outside leg can be clearly seen from the shoreline, maximizing the excitement for fans. So while there may no longer be a beauty pageant, the weekend promises to be a crowd pleaser, with the public able to see the boats, both on land and in the water, right up close. Fans can tour the Racer’s Village, meet the racers and enjoy the boat parade as they revel in the return of a great tradition. As the summer season begins, the 2018 Offshore Grand Prix will help thousands of fans rediscover the thrill of offshore racing in Point Pleasant Beach!

*Indicates boats in classes which are based on speed and cannot go over the class bracketed speed. Any boat caught breaking out of their speed bracket will receive last place points and will start the next race in the outside lane. GPS units will track this. GPS units are mandatory in each race boat, otherwise they will be disqualified. An official start time begins when the bow of the boat crosses the start line. All boats must cross the start line to be scored for that event. The boat is then scored by completed laps/distance completed. A completed lap is when a boat crosses the start line, and continues around the marks of the course and back to the finish line.
