Recipes by the Sea When the weather starts to turn cooler, there is nothing better than a warm kitchen, smelling of fresh baked cookies. This recipe is one of my most rquested...happy baking to all!

Cinnamon Roll Cookies (makes about 3 dozen)

3 cups all purpose flour ¼ tsp. baking powder ½ cup light brown sugar 2 tsp. cinnamon ½ cup light corn syrup

½ tsp. baking soda ½ cup butter 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 large egg

Filling: Mix together ¼ cup softened butter, ½ cup brown sugar, 3 tsp. cinnamon, ½ tsp. vanilla extract In a large bowl beat together softened butter, sugar and egg until fluffy. Add baking soda, baking powder and vanilla. Mix in corn syrup. Add sifted flour 1 cup at a time until well blended. Divide dough into 2 and wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 1 hour. Allow chilled dough to soften for 10 minutes at room temperature, then roll onto floured wax paper into a rectangle approximately 6”x15”. Spread half of the filling on each piece and use wax paper to roll into tight pinwheels. Chill dough again for at least 1 hour before cutting. Place cut slices about ½” thick and place on cookie sheet. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 10 to11 minutes. When cool drizzle with a confectioners sugar glaze.

The Power of Positive Thinking Finding Your Balance by Allison Feehan, N.D., D.Psc., CRMT

I’ve been meaning to write this article for some time and with the high retrograde energy and busy hectic yet beautiful summer there is no better time than now. The July energy of Mercury in retrograde sent most of us reeling in chaos. I experienced a period of problems just raining down on me. Thankfully, all problems were fixable and no one’s health was impacted. There was however, electronics and machines breaking, lost orders, mis-communications, missing of appointments, etc. My life and most of my client’s lives were so out of balance. This retrograde energy ended into August but the residue of it could be felt well into the Lion’s Gate energy of 8-8. August flew by and we are all now in prep for the upcoming hecticness of going back to school. Even if you don’t have little ones going back to school you will still be impacted by the amount of school buses on the roads.

I’ve been in total need of finding balance, peace, and organization. Perhaps, you are wondering what balance even looks like. I can tell you that being out of balance can be filled with anxiety, lack of sleep, panic attacks, and stress. Most people seek ‘work-life-balance’ but even that might not apply to those that don’t work outside the home. First and foremost, being mindful and not mind full is the key. Being mindful improves focus and concentration and can even improve your happiness. ‘Mind less’ tasks such as taking out the garbage or washing the dishes can change the way you feel by being aware of the task itself and not just moving through the motions. Be present in your body and what you are actually doing. Eating meals can also apply. Mindful eating can change what you’re eating and how you actually feel post meal. Being mindful may work in MOST situations but when you are battling a certain period of time that you just feel stuck in it can be difficult. No matter what approach I tried during retrograde I couldn’t seem to take that square peg and get it to fit in the round hole of what I was doing. It did alleviate some of the side effects, but I had to sit back and TRUST. Trusting is truly allowing the Universe just to take you with the flow of what will be. It means you let go of almost all control. This is something that is extremely hard for most of us to do. I knew that I needed to be patient and just allow situations to just unravel until the energy shifted. I had to start and end my day for myself. I would take at least 15-30 minutes in the morning to drink my tea and look out over the water, meditate, exercise, journal, review my to-do list. It was what I actually had control over. The same applied for an evening routine. I would stretch and do deep breath work before I got into bed. I would read a few pages of a book I had been wanting to read. Most nights I would review my to-do list and either tick tasks off or write new ones for the new day. This helped to clear my mind with a dump onto a piece of paper so that I wouldn’t keep playing over the list in my mind while I needed to wind down. If you are having trouble doing small tasks just for you, you can try just doing nothing! This can be even more difficult for some. Some of us have a hard time just doing nothing and for me I get super guilty when I just do nothing when I have a laundry list of tasks to do. I found myself only doing nothing when I was so exhausted my body would just set me down. Now, I try and do nothing after I have completed just a few tasks. This helps with the guilts and avoids the complete exhaustion. Finding balance is for sure an art. You may find balance and then fall out of balance. Don’t beat yourself up over this, let go and trust until you can regain your balance and mindfulness. Life is so fluid, and all things ebb and flow. Tune-in to you. Be as present as you can for those transition times. Try to enjoy. Try not to fill every single minute with stuff. Surrender to what needs to be for now. This too shall pass. Many Blessings, Allison

Rover Rescue Volunteers Needed! by Lauren Kehoe

Animal shelters are amazing facilities that help house and rehome all kinds of pets, saving lives every day. While the animal rescue movement couldn’t exist without them, they can also be stressful environments for animals in their care. Staff work tirelessly to create the best place for dogs and other animals to await their forever home, but it still will never be a “home”. Many shelters and rescues are limited on staffing and resources. Volunteers help to fill in the gaps, but are not a given. Funding for these facilities provides supplies for food, cleaning, medical, staffing, and other necessities. Physical structures that house dogs can be outdated, lacking proper noise control and less an ideal cleaning setups. Stress of dogs and people coming and going, constant changes, and contamination can exacerbate behavioral or medical issues in dogs.

Everyone does the best that they can with the resources that are affordable. One trend that has been popping up across shelters is volunteer outings. Dogs can not only walk with volunteers, but be taken on car rides to go for hikes or even spend time overnight in people’s homes. Dogs should be medically cleared, vaccinated, and behaviorally able to do these outings. If they are, they are a huge help. One benefit of time spent out of shelters is improved physical and mental health for dogs. Less mental stress means less physical stress, which can decrease chances of certain health issues. Reducing common shelter dog frustrations helps decrease displacement behaviors. Barking, jumping, mouthing, and similar can discourage adoptions. While dogs natural do these things, closed, stressful shelter environments often exacerbates them. It is also more difficult for a dog to focus on training and improve with endless distractions. Adopters and staff only seeing them daily behind shelter walls would be unable to predict how this would translate into a home setting. Observation and practice in the outside world provides information on a dog’s attributes. It gives a chance to know what behaviors shelter staff and volunteers should highlight and what needs to be worked on to increase adoptability. Different places have different requirements for where dogs can and cannot go, and whether or not they can interact with the public, but quality time spent away on any level provides a wealth of information. Dogs with known behavior or medical issues may not be ready for certain things, so caution should always be practiced. Life saving is the number one mission of shelters, but the more we learn, the more we can evolve. Increasing quality of life for dogs and another animals in their care is not only important for increasing adoptions, but for the well being of all animals and staff involved. A single action is all it takes to spark a small change which dominoes into great progress.

Shore Decor Back to the Future By Ashleigh Young Santamaria

I knew immediately that the days of simple, monochromatic kitchens and bathrooms were coming to an end when Original Style, the leading manufacturer of bathroom and kitchen tile in the UK, in partnership with the 2LG Studio Interior Design Group, named Deco Tayberry as the “Tile of the Year 2020”. Let’s start with the Deco Taybery tile, part of Original Tile’s Winchester Collection. It’s a blush and berry colored, glazed square tile with a repeating arch motif that can only be described as The Great Gatsby meets the 1980s. Each tile is handmade by in-house artisans using an age old screen-printing method, which means no two tiles are the same. Vibrancy and color are part of a growing design trend coming from people wanting to inject more individuality and personality into their homes but somehow the colors I’m seeing are reminding me of color palettes of yore: baby pinks, bright blues, mint green, pale yellows and buttercream. These colors are being married with newer design cues to honor the past and celebrate the future under the same roof. Designer Maureen Stevens combined Sherwin William’s Mint Condition paint with navy and white handmade tiles to brighten up the kitchen in a 100-year old Victorian home in Austin, TX, combining vintage accents like the black and white tile floor and antique chandelier with modern appliances and brass hardware for a fresh 1920 meets 2020 vibe. (opposite page) Donna Pizzi and her husband Philip purchased a 1918 Craftsman bungalow in Portland, OR. When they decided it was time to renovate, they chose to paint the existing cupboards and cabi nets off-white to match the rest of the trim in the house and the kitchen walls yellow walls to complement the lime, turquoise, and grey walls in the adjoining living and dining rooms. They replaced the old laminate kitchen backsplash with newer subway tiles but repurposed all the hardware, dipping them in tea overnight to lend patina and then spraying them with bronze paint in order to keep the authenticity of the original design. Makes me wonder how cool it would be if all the 08742 beach bungalows returned to their former vintage glory versus simply looking like smaller versions of modern homes. Finally, many of us don’t have the money, time (or stomach) for a renovation but are living with, ahem, “vintage” bathrooms of our own. The GREAT news is they’re back in style (sort of). Here’s an example of a bathroom refresh in a historic home in Philadelphia. The original 1950s porcelain fixtures and black & white hexagonal floor tile were in great shape. So the homeowners decided to trade the wallpaper for a fresh coat of paint and update the showerhead, lighting and toilet cover with black, glass and stainless steel accents to modernize the look and feel of the room. Back to Earth The Art of the Tea Ceremony by Natalie Berko

Tea ceremonies are an ancient cultural practice that originated in China and Japan. Rooted in the principals of Zen Buddhism these ceremonies are like a moving meditation resulting in a delightful cup of tea. Tea ceremonies offer a chance to immerse yourself in the present moment celebrating even the simplest of moments. Traditionally the ceremony takes place in a tea house (cha-shitsu), a small structure detached from the main house. Great care is take in the choice of materials for the construction. The room is usually about nine feet square, at one end is an alcove, called the tokonoma in which a scroll or flower arrangement is placed. The room also contains a small sunken fireplace that is used in the winter months for heating the tea kettle. The tea ceremony consists of the host bringing the tea utensils into the room, offering the guests special sweets, and then preparing and serving them tea made of pulverized tea leaf stirred in hot water. The serving of sweets and tea may be preceded by a light meal. After the tea is consumed, the guests are free to inquire about the various implements, which are afterward carried from the room concluding the ceremony. Ritual tea drinking which originated in China, was first practiced in Japan during the Kamakura period (1192-1333) by Zen monks, who drank tea to keep awake during long sessions of meditation. It later became an active part of the Zen ritual honoring the first patriarch, Bodhidharma. During the 15th century it came to be a gathering of friends in an isolated atmosphere to drink tea and discuss the aesthetic merits of paintings, calligraphy and flower arrangements. The objective of the Japanese tea ceremony is to create a relaxed communication between the host and their guests. Its ultimate aim is to attain deep spiritual satisfaction though the drinking of tea and through silent contemplation. These ceremonies have become more popular in modern times as a way to relax and share space. The modern tea ceremony follows tea philosophy and acts as a meditation that can be done alone or with a group of friends.

As there is harmony in nature, try to bring this quality into the tea room using cups made of natural materials with botanical prints, or incorporate some fresh flowers into your space.

How to Build a Modern Tea Ceremony Practice: 1. Gather your supplies: Spring water, a teakettle, a clay tea pot and cups (try to use something beautiful that has meaning to you) organic tea, incense, and an offering ( a simple flower in a vase does just fine) that helps to decorate the space.

2. Create a peaceful space where you and your guests can enjoy the tea ceremony. The host will sit on one side and the guests will be seated across and facing the host. Light your incense and set up your tools and tea. 3. Set an intention for the ceremony, either silently or aloud. Take a moment to connect with your guests and remember there is no right or wrong way to have a tea ceremony. Tea ceremonies vary throughout cultures but the most important element is to be mindful in the process. 4. To prepare the tea, heat the water in a traditional teakettle until it is just about to boil. Then transfer it to the teapot that you will use for the tea ceremony. Put a few tea leaves in each cup and watch them unfurl when you pour in the hot water. 5. Serve the tea. Once the tea has been brewed and served, the host should invite the guests (verbally or with a small hand gesture) to enjoy the tea. 6. When you are done, make an offering to tea andthe earth by tossing your leaves on the ground returning them to the Earth.

“Kei” stands for respect which is shown through careful handling and care for the objects used during the tea ceremony. “Sei”

for purity which is achieved by leaving behind all thoughts and worries of daily life during the ceremony.

“Jaku” stands for tranquility which is achieved after the first three concepts are discovered, experience and embraced.
