Summer is over and only one thing is good about that here at the Jersey Shore… we get our beaches back lol.

Seriously though, the kids are going back to school, we have less than 3 months until Christmas and then there is New Year’s Eve again.

This is a really good time of the year to get “back to basics”. Many of us have gained a few of those barbeque pounds, slacked on our work-outs, and just put our health on hold until Labor Day. The Power of Positive Thinking How To Get Back Into Your Flow After…

Do you ever have the feeling like your hair is on fire from the thought of too many tasks after returning from a trip or the holidays? That to-do list can sometimes make you feel as if you need another trip or that the holiday break should never end.

Getting back into your flow after can take some time, exhausting time. Time that you may not have. Here are just a few tips that can help you find your flow.

If you are still feeling as if you are not grounded and your thoughts are still scattered you might need to meditate.

If sitting quietly does help you to regroup then find a quiet space inside or outside and get into that lotus pose, find your breath, and clear your mind. Take time for yourself.

Don’t feel guilty and try not to think about all the tasks that need to be done while you’re sitting there. It will all get done and if you allow yourself 2-10 minutes of time that is nothing to being feeling guilty about.

First things first, diet. While traveling or the holidays we tend to grab foods that we wouldn’t normally eat or even entertain.

Our bellies stretch to fit more good-eats and spirits. We go back for seconds or eat whatever time of the day we want.

Our schedules and eating times get blurred as we enjoy our time off. Reeling in your diet should be the first priority. What you eat also controls how you feel. At the time of consumption, you might feel great but sometimes we can send ourselves into a carb coma. Begin by getting your eating schedule back on track. The time you would normally eat prior to your travel or the holiday. Try eating five smaller meals in the day than three bigger meals. Your stomach may have stretched from all that good food that you might be hungry in between those bigger meals. Eating five smaller meals a day can also support your adrenals and your excretory system. Scale back on complex carbohydrates, dairy, and gluten and increase good water intake to half your body weight in ounces a day. This will make you feel better and think clearer.

During or after your meditation you may find it helpful to smudge yourself, the house, or your surroundings. Some people love the smell of Palo Santo. Palo Santo, also known as Holy Wood has a sweet wood smell to it and its smoke is light. The smell lingers beautifully for some time and gives a sense of refreshment. The wood itself is dense, can take a while to light, and doesn’t stay smoldering, you must keep lighting it. Sage on the other hand, is lights quickly and the smoke is dense with a pungent smell that lingers deeply for some time. Some people really enjoy this thick smell while others find it not refreshing at all. Either way, the therapeutic qualities of the smoke for either smudging tool has been proven effective for the air you breathe and the state of mind it puts you in. If you are really into smudging you might find adding some grounding or healing crystals beneficial. Tourmaline and amethyst are great for grounding and healing respectively.

After you begin the first day of reeling in that diet sit and put your thoughts out onto paper. Writing a to-do list or things you’d like to accomplish in chronological order of priority to you. Is getting the children’s items squared away a first priority or getting yourself organized to better help everyone else? Getting tasks written down on paper can help organize your mind and thought process.

Have a set rhythm for getting your flow back each and every holiday and travel excursion you take. Make coming back to the present after a happy escape just as fun as getting ready for it. These tips are so helpful to so many situations to bring us back from [insert your paradigm].

Pumpkin flavors are everywhere but this butternut squash recipe is a top request from my family. Roasting the squash first deepens its flavor, and brings out an earthy sweetness. If you top this with some toasted parmesan cheese crisps and add a salad and you have the perfect meal!

Butternut Squash Soup

1 large butternut squash, peeled and cut into large cubes about 3 lbs whole. (Some grocery stores carry cut squash in the produce section if you don’t want to cut it yourself).

3 medium shallots coarsely sliced 2 cloves of garlic, peeled 1 large apple peeled and cubed ½ tsp. thyme 1 tsp fresh ground ginger ¼ tsp curry ½ tsp cinnamon 1 Tbsp. brown sugar salt and pepper to taste 2 pods of Knorr homestyle chicken stock 7-8 cups of water Olive oil Half and half

Place cut squash, apples, shallots and garlic in 2 large roasting pans. Drizzle with olive oil and turn to coat evenly. Sprinkle with thyme, ginger, curry, cinnamon, brown sugar, salt and pepper.

Place in a 400 degree oven for 45 minutes until slightly golden.

In a large heavy bottomed pot place water and chicken stock.

Allow to warm over low heat. Add roasted squash and stir.

Next, puree with an immersion blender until smooth. Cook for 10 more minutes over low heat. Ladle soup into bowls and drizzle a tablespoon of half and half. Garnish with parmesan toasts.

Rover Rescue A Nose Like No Other

Dog noses are wet, twitchy and adorable, but are also pretty complex. Dogs’ noses inhale and exhale at the same time, having the capability to separate air. Each nostril sniffs independently to help pinpoint exactly which direction a sent is coming from.

They are able to detect pheromones from other dogs using the vomeronasal organ, which humans do not have. These pheromones help identify mates, recognize predators, and even detect emotions and sickness in humans. This explains why your dog may get closer or farther away when you’re upset, or how they can even detect cancer.

Dogs use their noses and smells to orient with the world. Allowing them to take their sweet time and sniff on walks keeps their noses sharp and lets them learn. Smelling is great enrichment for dogs. Nosework or scentwork can be a fun activity to help tire out your pup. The start of nosework usually involves hiding favorite toys or treats in some empty boxes. Once your dog gets the hang of it, difficulty can gradually be increased.

Unless you are training a police or drug dog, there is a lot of flexibility in nosework.

Dog’s noses are pretty amazing. New smells keep the world interesting and fun. Next time your dog stops to smell the roses, consider doing the same. (Or just stopping to take in the view).

While humans are more visual and use changing of light to tell time, dogs utilize their noses. Scents travel throughout the day just like light.

It may still be #localsummer at the Jersey Shore, but once the last Labor Day guests have waved goodbye my thoughts quickly turn to crisp fall evenings cuddled up by the fireplace.

Concrete has been a growing trend in home design as an alternative to more conventional countertop, bathtub and flooring options. When it comes to fireplace design this eco-friendly and non-combustible material continues to show up in new and exciting ways. With its clean lines and endless design possibilities, concrete brings a modern, minimalist look to interiors while also heating your space more efficiently due to its ability to retain and radiate the heat thrown off by a fire. Fireplaces have become a sizzling focal point in the world of interior design. Gone are the days of elaborate mantels. The trend today is minimal everything and we’ve got some hot design ideas to share with you, whether you’re planning to bring a hearth into your home or revamp your existing fireplace.

Brick fireplaces have been around forever. The trend now is to paint traditional reddish brown brick white (for a clean, classic look) or black (for more drama). Painting the brick surround is a quick, easy way to make over your brick fireplace, and there are plenty of tutorials online to help you through this process. You can DIY this project in about a day, with 4 hours of active work time including cleaning, priming and painting the brick. Choose indoor, latex, heat resistant paint rated to withstand typical fireplace temperatures of around 200° in a flat, semi-gloss or gloss finish. Note: this paint should only be used for the exterior, not the interior firebox, which requires a special high heat tolerant paint.

Not quite up for a whole fireplace overhaul? There are a few simpler updates to consider.

Handmade cement tiles can transform functional fireplaces into modern works of art like the Tulum and Atlas II patterned tiles from the @cementtileshop shown below.

You can also take your mantel to the next design level by replacing an outdated ornate mantel with a floating, natural, reclaimed piece of timber, culling down the number of items on display to focus on small living plants, simple objets d’art and graphic picture frames.

No matter what your fireplace fancy, don’t forget to get your fireplace cleaned and inspected before the winter season. The chimney industry is largely unregulated, so choose a chimney service provider who is a New Jersey licensed Home Improvement contractor and is CSIA (Chimney Safety Institute of America), NFI (National Fireplace Institute) and/or F.I.R.E. certified (Fireplace Investigation Research and Education) to make sure they’re up on the latest safety standards. Fashion Frenzy Savor Each Season

Owning a small consignment shop forces me to be in the moment. I don’t have a large stockroom where I can store massive drop-offs or stash items from previous or upcoming seasons. So, my small space forces me to be in the here and now. I can only accept items from the current season. Items people will be wearing immediately –or very soon- depending on the weather.

I have noticed that many women come in and comment about missing the cut-off for the last season or question when I will be taking the next season. I am constantly reminded of Kristen Dalton’s words to “be aware of what season you are in and give yourself the grace to be there.” It’s my job to gracefully lead my ladies back to now.

Back to what people are looking for now. Back to what people are wearing now. I have to stay within the seasons because that is what works for my business. It also works for life! When you are constantly looking to what is coming next – or looking back on what you missed out on – you can’t enjoy what is right in front of you now.

So, take a moment. Take a breath. Look around and take it all in. There’s beauty in every season. Stay present and enjoy the gift that is today. And please don’t ask when I will be accepting sandals and shorts. I’m over here enjoying the show…the leaves are about to show us how lovely it is to let things go.

Enjoying the season you are in – the literal season and the metaphorical season of your life – will make all the difference in the quality of your life. So go ahead, let go of the clothes that no longer fit – too big, too small, job you no longer have, lifestyle you no longer live – let it go. That season is over. Embrace the season that you are in. Be all there, without living in the past or worrying about the future. Straining against the change of seasons just leads to discomfort and unhappiness. The seasons change no matter what. Let each season go and enjoy the next as it comes.

Enjoy the ride and the gifts that each changing season has to offer.

People imagine that I want it to be summer all of the time. The shop is busy and hopping every day. And I love it! But that pace is emotionally and physically tiring. Customers are in and out all day long. There’s lots of chatting, long lines and piles of clothes from the fitting room. Then Fall rolls around. There are less people in the shop but these customers tend to stay longer. More conversations are had. I hear more about what they are shopping for, where they will wear it and how much they like what they got when they were in the last time. There’s a deeper sense of connection.

Winter is quiet. It’s a time to regroup. It’s a time to reorganize.

The shop slows down tremendously. It allows more time and more energy to pursue hobbies and devote time to things that are set aside when I am in a constant state of creation and production during my busiest seasons. Dreading this season would rob it of the gifts it has to offer. Instead, I settle in with a cup of tea and knit while I watch movies. My mind wanders as I relax. I am often rewarded with an awesome idea for the shop when I sink in to this season and savor the quiet time.

Parental Guidance Teaching Your Child Self Care

Last month I wrote about our job as parents and the importance of caring for ourselves.

After all, we are all caregivers and we all need take time to replenish bodies and souls.

While the job of parenting never really ends, our role does not always remain that of a caregiver. Nor should it. I believe that we are our child’s first, and most important teacher.

I’m not talking about formal education but children need to be taught how to live, how to care and how to love themselves long before they will learn anything else. We need to teach our children, self-care in the safety and comfort of their own home.

Today’s world is difficult. With portable technology we are constantly distracted by our own devices and our childs hand held devices. There are screens everywhere. Sometimes it may even be easier to give your child the phone so he doesn’t fight you getting dressed, and out the door to school. If this resonates with you, then take the time now to pause, and pause that device while you’re at it.

Self-Care is a conscious and purposeful act of caring for yourself. So teaching self care will require a focused act of teaching, demonstrating, supporting and allowing trial and error.

Without criticism or judgement, and by all means without the distraction of Fortnight.

It requires engagement from both the parent and child, interacting and exchanging information.

Self-care is not about control, arguments, or getting out the door. These simple acts allow appropriate amounts of control, foster decision making and promote healthy habits of the mind and body.

It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.

They can be responsible for more involved household activities of meal preparation, laundry and cleaning.They will begin to form their own social connections and strive for independent experiences away from the family. Mid-teens to young adults need experiences working jobs, managing money and budgets, shopping, and exploring career options.

Sea Shorties She stood on the busy corner, warm and safe in the arms of the man she loved for as long as she could remember.

He let her have that lie, knowing it was as much for herself, as it was for him. She couldn’t stand to be vulnerable, especially in front of a man. Though there wasn’t much she could hide in her eyes either. Including the fact that it was killing her to walk away from him.

They had spent the night, sharing pitchers of beer and feeding each other pretzels at the Irish Pub down the block.

Taking turns playing songs from their youth on the jukebox.

Occasionally, he would lead her around the dance floor to something by Kenny Loggins or Otis Redding.

“It’s late” he said. “You should go” He knew that if he didn’t make her go right then, he would never let her leave. Within seconds he was hailing her a cab and opening the car door for her. Her heart was racing as if trying to run from the breakage it was about to endure. He could feel it as she flung her arms around his waist and clung with all of her strength.

The cab driver yelled something along the lines of “hurry up” in a language neither recognized, causing them both to snap back “Shut uuuuuup”, in perfect unison, as only two kids from Brooklyn can do. They shared a laugh over that before the ache of the moment regained control.

She could tell he was stalling. Like her, he didn’t want the moment to end. Neither had any idea when they would see each other again. She didn’t dare look up at him.

She couldn’t bear to look in his eyes. Big brown glimpses into his soul. The only shade of brown she ever thought was beautiful. He couldn’t hide anything in those eyes.

Especially his love for her.a Though he tried. Tried to hide it. Tried to deny it. But standing there, he couldn’t fight it any longer. He took his arms from around her and put his hands on her shoulders. She placed her forehead into his chest while he gently rubbed up and down her arms. When she still didn’t look up, he took her face into his hands, whether to kiss her or just to look at her, he hadn’t decided. That’s when he realized she was crying.

He gently kissed the top of her head while holding it in his hands. She looked up at him again. He pushed the hair off of her face and said, “You know how much I...” “Don’t” she said, as she shook her head no. “Because if you say it, I will never let you walk away.” She sat down in the cab and he closed the door. She wouldn’t look at him. She couldn’t. She knew he was looking at her though.

“Please don’t” he whispered as his thumbs wiped the tears off her cheeks. She could hear the desperation, the guilt, in his voice. Not wanting him to feel bad, she finally looked at him, her blue eyes sparkling. With the biggest grin and the most sincerity she could muster she said “Those aren’t teardrops babe, they’re RAINDROPS”. Even though it had stopped raining an hour earlier. Had he not known that, he might have believed her.

Healthy Morsels, II Do You Give Much Thought to the Food You Eat?

came from the farms just outside of town. They could see the animals grazing in the fields one day and be eating it the next. They cooked with love for their families and love for the food they were eating. They were also healthier, leaner and wasted far less food then we do.

Do you consider what went into the bread you eat or the cookies you eat? Chances are you do not. Most of us don’t. But stop to consider for a moment what does go into the food you eat. This can be really hard if you eat a lot of processed foods but it is very important. If you eat fruits and vegetables and especially if you eat meat it is more important to consider where your food came from and there are many reasons why.

We have become so far removed from our hunter gatherer ancestors. People used to have to farm their own food and hunt for their meat. There was a sense of gratitude for the animals that gave their lives to nourish the hunters and their families. Today, many of us go to the grocery store and pick up the meat we eat in styrofoam packages. We don’t give a second thought to where the meat comes from. There is little gratitude for the shrink wrapped package that makes its way into our shopping carts. I could go all environmental here and tell you all why factory farmed meat is a travesty but this article is about why it’s not good for us to eat without gratitude.

This is a hard concept for me to convey but it is one that is growing in popularity. It is about holding a sense of reverence for the fact that we deserve to eat the healthiest and best food out there and the animals we eat deserve to have all the days of their lives be great ones before the day comes where they become sustenance for us. Shopping in the grocery store removes us so far from the origins of the food we eat that it can become a detriment to our health and the health of our environment. If you knew what went into the chicken nuggets you buy you might decide to buy a chicken from your local butcher, bread the breast meat, and bake it yourself.

Convenience has destroyed our health. I’m not trying to suggest you should forgo the grocery store for a hunting trip but do pay attention to what you put into your cart. There are more healthful and local options finding there way into our grocery stores and this is fantastic but you have to shop mindfully.

Eating food is filling but is it fulfilling? Do you eat the best and freshest food with thought of how the food nourishes you? Or, is food something you stuff in your mouth without thought for where it came from or how it will affect your body? Eating mindfully is not a new concept but what if you ate with a mindful awareness of where the meat you’re eating came from, for where the fruits and vegetables you ate were farmed? Our more recent ancestors used to go to the market every day for the freshest produce and meats.

Nap York is open 24 hours a day, in the city that never sleeps offering private nap pods. Nap pods are available to rent for about $10 per 30 minutes of rest time, inviting you to come inside and take a quick snooze at any time of the day, be it during your lunch break or even before Natalie Berko you head out for that dinner date later Certified in the evening. Nap York’s mission is to Crystal Healer provide an oasis for New Yorkers to focus on cultivating wellness in body and mind, creating a quiet place to concentrate deliberately on yourself. A service like Nap York may seem like a slightly counterintuitive move for a city so hell-bent on constant movement, and a work around the clock mentality, but when it comes to finding ways to resent and refresh naps really can be what the doctor ordered.

Napping isn’t just for toddlers anymore, in fact it’s becoming the hot new trend! It’s a sign of the times when major cities around the world are opening up nap cafes. From Tokyo to London, Seoul to Paris the list of cities opening up nap cafes has been growing in recent months, with busy, overworked and burnt-out urbanities welcoming the idea of being able to take a power nap in the middle of the day.

People have been taking mid-day naps for centuries, from Spain’s siestas to Italy’s reposo and slowly but surely the United States are following suit. Just in the last few years, napping at work has become an integral part of company culture. Google, Uber, and Zappos have jumped on the napwagon, offering nap rooms to help employees feel better and be more productive. According to the National Sleep Foundation, a short 20 to 30 minute nap can help improve mood, alertness, and performance. Fatigue in the workplace costs employers in the U.S. approximately $411 billion annually. This statistic is startling its only natural that companies and their employees are becoming more sleep conscious. The result is both businesses and employees benefit from sleeping on the job.

A study published in the journal Behavioural Brain Research, suggests that naps may even surpass caffeine as a boost for alertness and mental agility. Sleep Box CEO, Mikhail Kymov revealed that companies are beginning to see the nap trend as a part of their wellness programs. Specifically designed for napping in the workplace, sleep pods provide a cozy, isolated environment with a futuristic look and feel. These nap pods can already be found in offices of many leading tech companies. Krymov predicts nap pods will enter more traditional workspaces such as government and law offices in the near future.

April 2017 David Llyod Clubs in England introduced “Napercise” classes in England. Huffington Post calls it the new workout of your dreams. Each participant got a single bed, blanket, and eye mask then sleep for 45 minutes inside an exercise studio. Sleep sessions are designed to reinvigorate the mind and body and even burn calories! David Llyod Clubs collaborated with sleep expert Kathryn Pinkham on the project. When we are sleep deprived we lack the energy to exercise regulary and also lack mentaly clarity to make good decisions about the food we eat, which could negatively impact our physical health long term.

The trend has hit the states but rather than a bed a hammock and gained trend as “Antigravity Cocooning” with classes in hip boutique fitness centers across New York City, San Fransico, and Los Angeles.

Known for high fashion, culture and all things glamourous, New York has added luxury power napping to the list.

Pay-by-the-hour hotels have been around since early 2007, but it is only in the past few years that napping on the go has become a trend. Nap hotels aren’t just for lovers, they’re a much needed haven for busy commuters and exhausted travelers. Nap clubs are now popping up throughout the city, one of the hottest new spots is called Nap York.
