Arthritis Pain Can Ruin the Holidays!

According to some experts, eight out of 10 Americans over the age of 55 suffer from one form of arthritis or another. This is something that can cause a lot of problems in how you function, each and every day!

In general terms, arthritis is a gradual breakdown or deterioration of the joint spaces in your musculoskeletal system. According to some experts, eight out of 10 Americans over the age of 55 - suffer from one form of arthritis or another. You may be one of these people. If you’re not, you could be in the future.

In many cases, arthritis can become so painful and debilitating, simple tasks such as opening a jar or holding a pencil can be difficult.

Here’s the deal. Arthritis affects everyone in different ways. In some, joints in the spine, fingers, wrists, shoulders, knees-even toes-lose their normal shape and large amounts of fluid and debris fill the joint space. There are many causes of arthritis, but we want to address this as soon as we can. A major cause is simply age.

Injury, suppressed or weakened immune systems are some of the other reasons for people having arthritis.

Some people have no choice-it is simply hereditary, but again I think that comes from them doing exactly what their parents did, and eating and drinking like their parents.

In most people, the body responds to the onset of arthritis by making extra bone. Your body makes this material in an attempt to shore up the degenerating joint. Kind of like you using super glue on something trying to make it as strong as it was. This additional material, or overgrowth, is called a bone spur or osteophyte.

• Bone spurs are typically found in the joint or disc spaces, where cartilage has begun to break down or deteriorate.

• Bone spurs sometimes block the spaces where nerve roots leave the spinal canal.

There are many symptoms of arthritis, including:

• Burning

• Cramping

• Inflammation

• Joint pain

• Loss of muscle control

• Muscle spasms

• Numbness

• Pain

• Stabbing pain in the extremities

• Joint stiffness

Major types of arthritis include osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Could this be nature’s most potent medicine?

Have you ever wondered what homeopathy was? If it is a placebo or if it really holds space in the medical industry? Yes, I’m writing this article to educate you more in what homeopathy is and its benefits but I’m also writing this article to enlighten you in the power you hold in your health care.

In a quick overview, Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician and founder of Homeopathy around the time of 1789, coined the name “homeopathy”. In Greek “homoios” means similar, “pathos” means suffering, referring to the pharmacological principle, the law of similars, that is its basis. “The law of similar was described by Hippocrates and Paracelsus and was utilized by many cultures, including the Mayans, Chinese, Greeks, Native American Indians, and Asian Indians, but it was Hahnemann who codified the law of similars into a systematic medical science.”

“Homeopathy is a specific form of medicine that uses minute doses of a highly diluted substance that stimulates the body to cure itself. To many, homeopathy seems implausible. They fear it is purely a placebo effect or worse, a form of deception or quackery.” Homeopathy is allopathic medicine and seeks to correct the underlying imbalance that caused the symptoms in the first place. Homeopathy achieves this by strengthening the body’s own defenses, thereby allowing the body to heal itself. It can be used in concert with conventional medicine or in the absence of.

“Homeopathy became spectacularly popular in the United States and Europe in the 1800s and its strongest advocates included European royalty, American entrepreneurs, literary giants, and religious leaders.

But at the time that it was gaining widespread popularity, it became the object of deep-seated animosity and vigilant opposition from establishment medicine.” Homeopathy has been used in Australia since 1830 and Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom still never travels anywhere without her homeopathic medicines.

Women were instrumental in keeping homeopathy alive in the United States as it has been around for over 200 years and is used by millions worldwide. The remedies are non-toxic and when properly administered, can be safely used with infants, children, adults, and animals. It’s cost effective and doesn’t require a prescription. Homeopathy has been proven to cure many ailments and infections, acute and chronic, time and again. This proving is done when specific protocols are repeatable; meaning when patients are ill with the same ailment the selected line(s) of protocols have repeatedly been proven to cure.

Don’t you wish you knew what your dog was saying?

Dogs can be reactive and vocal for different reasons. Some common ones include fear, excitement, barriers, and anxiety. Reactive can be a sign of overstimulation in the environment.

Examples of reactive behavior can be anything from barking or growling to lunging and snapping.

When handling a reactive dog, the greatest trick is to catch them before they hit the threshold of overexcitement.

Once an energy level is above a certain point (usually a very intense reaction), any previously learned tricks or distractions are blown out the water. The key is to intercept the dog before its behavior is pushed out of proportion.

Knowing a dog’s triggers is a huge advantage in preventing reactivity.

Keeping the dog at a reasonable proximity from stimuli enable them to focus and be reinforced for good behavior, rather than letting the dog practice barking, lunging, or other negative things.

If a dog is reactive to other dogs, use visual barriers to supplement fencing or close the blinds where dogs walk past. On leash walks, it can be helpful to have more than one handler so that both can be on the lookout for other dogs in the vicinity. Each dog is different, and all have different stopping points. Some may be fine practicing sit and down thirty feet away from another dog, while others may have to be turned and led in the opposite direction. The same technique can be applied to other things such as cars, bikes, and people.

Some dogs are more taken aback by everyday household items such as blenders, vacuums, and hairdryers. While pushing a dog is good, baby steps are always recommended. If a dog is terrified of the vacuum, you can try to start out outdoors while someone vacuums indoors.

In this scenario, the dog can hear the noise but is not too overwhelmed to be constantly distracted. Try feeding the dog high value treats like peanut butter or cheese, only to be given when the scary object is around. For less food motivated dogs, you can try petting or playing with a favorite special toy. As a dog becomes less phased by the stimulus, you can increase the training difficulty, such as moving the dog indoors while the vacuum is in another room.

Every dog is an individual, and move and grow at their own pace.

The key is to not let the dog practice the undesirable behavior.

Prevention means less stress and frustration on both you and your dog. We may not know a dog’s history or exact triggers, so don’t be afraid to test out different things and see what works.

No training plan is linear, there is often backsliding. Don’t be discouraged; any step and work in the right direction is helpful. The world can be scary and overwhelming but doesn’t have to be.

Parental Guidance Secrets

A few weeks ago I found myself with a free Wednesday evening, and as my moons aligned, I also received a last minute invitation from a friend to see a presentation by Jon Mattleman at Manasquan High School. Of course, I jumped on this, as I rarely get a night out with my friend and anything beats the pile of laundry in my basement. There we sat, a few of the fortunate ones, listening to Jon Mattleman speak of the Secret Life of Teens.

If you can close your eyes and imagine a young Gary Schandling, with a psychology degree talking about the trials of parenthood, then you have a clear image of our night. It felt more like a night at a comedy show then a parenting seminar. Yet through his humor, and heart wrenching anecdotes, Jon Mattleman connected with each one in the audience that night. Connectedness… it’s what we desire from our teens yet they seem to work so hard against us.

But why? For some “very good reasons”, Mattleman explained. His insights into teens were developed through his years as both a parent and counselor. Our teens often have very good reasons for what they do, but their reasons are very different from our logic. They have reasons why they argue, sleep, ignore, don’t talk to us, drink and experiment with risky behavior. But their reasons are good reasons, to them. So, how do we get them to buy into our logic? We don’t, because in reality, we can’t. Human biology tells us that the adolescent brain is growing and developing through the teen years, and continues until the age of about 25. Development can’t be rushed but merely shaped through experiences, growth and reflection. Readers are familiar with my repeated statements about this. Would you expect a newborn to walk? Would you expect a toddler to read and write? Then, why would we expect our teens to think logically or calculate risk like an adult? The bottom line is as parents, we need to meet our children where they are in development, wherever that is.

Mattleman also shared some great advice. Most importantly, he suggests creating an environment of respect. That doesn’t mean we demand respect from our kids but rather we demonstrate it to them. So, if they ask us to knock on their bedroom door, refrain from corny jokes in front of friends, or hold off on any gesture of public affection, then we listen, because our teens are telling us what they need. If we get the silent treatment for days, or even weeks, we wait, and allow the silence, but continue the love and support. Perhaps most importantly, we reach out. We reach out to other parents, teachers, and even local support groups. We share our house rules and concerns and discover what happens in other people’s homes. And we listen when the teachers tell us how good our kids are, because they are seeing something we are too close to see. We need to reach out for support, to demonstrate to our kids that they can do this too. As Mattleman spoke of a night at an AA meeting, it reminded me of a friend who suggested that all parents should attend a meeting with their children, and they should do this before there is a concern with drinking. We need to show teens that there is always someone willing to listen.

Allow our children to see others with struggles reaching out. Help them identify the family and community supports before they are needed, and take away the expectation of perfection.

Lastly, hold on to your sense of humor and hope, because thankfully, there is an end to the teenage years.

Jon Mattleman reports that he has a close relationship with both his now adult children.

When you participate in a ritual, essentially you are telling your brain you’ve already completed whatever you’ve enacted symbolically.

Here are five steps that you can use to create your own New Year’s Ritual and welcome energy and positivity into the New Year:

1. Turn your intention inward and begin active meditation.

self-confidence, “self-defeating” beliefs, or frequently, fear.

Locate and face their inner block and mend it with a simple affirmation such as “May this block be healed by divine love and light.” It may be a journey but the first step to removing spiritual blocks is to acknowledge they exist, and are removable. Blocks are energy that no longer service our higher good and can be removed in numerous ways including this cleansing ritual.

The beginning of your ritual will focus on bringing your intentions to light and turning them into a sort of active meditation. At the beginning of your ritual start by breathing deeply and focusing on clearing your mind, this primes your palate to focus on the tasks at hand. Your cleanse can be something as simple as cleaning out a closet. What makes the action purposeful is the intention behind your actions.

Once the task is finished breathe deeply once again and take a moment to acknowledge your accomplishment. This ritual can be used over and over again to scratch things off the to-do list we all have looming around.

4. Cleansing begins within. Open up.

With your inner blocks removed or at least being chipped away at you can continue your inward focused, meditative state but with a fresh mantra. “Grant me clarity about my needs for the year ahead.”

Followed by several deep breaths. Find a place to sit quietly and repeat your affirmation until an idea comes to mind. Something that will aide you in enacting change in the coming year. It could be a small change in your daily routine (like waking up a little earlier to be able to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee before the work day). It could even be a new project you wish to take on such as journaling or hiking. If nothing comes to the surface right away, thats okay, keep practicing these little rituals and guidance will come, keep your eyes open for it!

2. Figure out what your goals are for the upcoming year.

Don’t worry if you’re not sure where to focus your cleanse right away. Do some self-research take time to meditate, draw, play magic, anything that allows you to center yourself and get to a place where you may reflect on the past year is a great first step.

5. Keep it simple.

Don’t worry about tailoring your ritual to one specific thing, a new year can feel over-whelming. Ritual simplicity makes it much easier for you to magically empower your upcoming year. Since all areas of life are, in some way, connected. Over time a cleansing or clearing out of one area will inevitably have a positive impact on the rest of your life.

Whatever your goal is its important to look within to examine yourself for any inner blocks that can affect your desired outcome. Many people struggle to affect improvements in their lives because of something internal, particularly low

But guess what – we all just did a LOT. We survived Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hannukkah, and New Years.

These past few months are always crazy and packed full of stress from all the constant pull for time and finances. We run around like chickens (or turkeys?) with our heads cut off, trying to make everyone happy and get everything done, with every last nerve stretched thin and fragile as spiderweb the whole time. But every year, we power through. And now we’ve survived another one.

You don’t have to break the bank or do anything extravagant. Schedule a date night with your significant other, or plan a girls’ night with some friends. Maybe take a day trip on a weekend with the family or just go for a drive on your own. Get your nails done, change your hair color, go for a massage, or buy those shoes you’ve been eyeing for months but everyone missed the hints you were dropping around the holidays.

The bottom line is this: In a few months, it will start getting warmer and the kids will be out of school and you’ll have to start running around again. We have a grace period right now, and I think you ought to use it to take care of yourself. Don’t worry about feeling like you “should” be doing anything in particular. Take advantage of the down time and figure out what you want to do.

After all, you just spent the last few months doing for others – you deserve to show yourself a little love, too!

The Book Report “The Cuban Affair” by Nelson DeMille A book review by Brian Favretto

“Everyone knows that even the best battle plans fall apart as soon as the first shot is fired. Then it’s improvisation, instinct and initiative that save the day”. Daniel Graham “Mac” MacCormick’s words in Nelson DeMille’s latest thriller, “The Cuban Affair” prove to be insightful and foreshadowing in this well-written novel.

In his twentieth novel, DeMille has created a new character in Mac, a thirty-five year old owner and captain of a 42 foot fishing charter boat in Key West, Florida, and a military veteran of the Afghan War. He is content with his life, spending most days on the water but leaving plenty of time to drink and womanize, yet he is a little bored and a lot broke. When he is visited by a Cuban-American lawyer whose clients want to offer him some adventure and a boatload of money (pun intended), he can’t help but listen to the deal.

can land them in a Cuban prison or in front of a firing squad. The plot begins to drag a bit, as DeMille takes us on a tour of Havana in a nonfiction kind of way, and Mac and Sara struggle to make any progress with their plans. Paranoia is a common theme here however, and we begin to wonder who is going to turn on whom. The Cuban tour guide, Antonio, is shady, interested in Sara, and possibly on the take. Sara is so secretive that we can only think she is either not in the know, or up to her own agenda. Meanwhile, Mac is stuck in the middle wondering if he will make it out of Cuba rich, or in a body bag, or not at all. “Being captain of your own fate doesn’t mean you always make good decisions”, and he begins to wonder why he signed on for this, as he sees his exit window slowly closing.

I’ve always been a fan of DeMille’s storytelling abilities. His novels are so easy to follow, and there is a natural flow and progression to his plots. His characters are always so well developed and relatable that you don’t have to wonder what their next step will be. Unfortunately, I didn’t discover all of that in this novel. The pages did turn themselves, but I didn’t feel like I really knew Mac or Sara at all. Perhaps I was comparing Mac to a lesser version of my favorite DeMille character John Corey, who appeared in many of his novels.

They are alike in many ways (maybe too many) and until the end, I didn’t feel the suspense that I’m accustomed to with DeMille. It’s certainly not all bad, and I am probably nitpicking because of the high bar DeMille has set for himself. In fact, one trait that I love about Mac are his contradictory thoughts throughout the book that remain unspoken, like when Sara is talking about Cuba and says “I’d like to come back here someday” and Mac says to himself “I’d like to get out of here tonight”.

Eduardo Valazquez and the lovely Sara Ortega offer him a fortune to participate in an adventure to Cuba in order to recover $60 million and millions more in land deeds that were hidden in a cave by her father, before he fled the country during the 1959 Cuban Revolution. She also promised to bring home something of even greater importance if their mission was successful. The possibility of scoring $2 million, coupled with the potential of scoring with Sara Ortega was too much to refuse, and Mac was nodding yes blindly.

Once in Cuba, under the guise of being part of an educational tour, they were to meet with a contact, collect their haul, and use Mac’s boat to return to Florida. The fly in their ointment is a communist regime in Cuba which doesn’t take kindly to Americans. Set mainly in Havana, DeMille uses his observations from the time he spent there to paint a word picture of a country in turmoil, where the government militia rules all and demands compliance. It’s a place where neighbors turn on each other and police informants outnumber the police themselves. The country seems stuck in a time warp, where not much progress has been made since the 1959 revolution. For Mac and Sara, this means they have plenty of rules to follow as “tourists”, and deviation from procedure

I can still recommend “The Cuban Affair” as a great read, and I’d like to see these characters again. I think some more time spent with them will have me liking them even more. Reserve your copy at any of our local libraries and know for yourself if Mac and Sara created an international affair in Cuba, a romantic affair, or both!

Healthy Morsels, II Healthy Diet, Healthy Mind

Long ago I went back to school to gain my license to practice psychotherapy. By adding this to my RD, (registered dietitian), I thought I would be better able to help my clients overcome the blocks they had to taking action on changing what they didn’t like about their health. We all know nutrition affects physical health.

How we eat has a direct effect on our health and, as such, an indirect effect on our emotional well-being. Little did I know then that nutrition also has a direct effect on our mental health.

This can occur in two ways: direct nutrient intake and nutrient intakes effect on our gut’s inhabitants, bacteria, or our microbiome.

So, how to eat for good mental health? The Mediterranean diet has been studied for years due to the good health enjoyed by people who follow the diet. The Mediterranean diet has high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, low sugar, low red meat, and is high in fruits and vegetables. Studies have shown decreased rates of depression in patients fed a modified Mediterranean diet. This is on top of the cardiac benefits proven years ago.

Another area of research on mental health and nutrition is with trauma victims. For example, when we are highly stressed, our bodies use up magnesium and zinc. A study in New Zealand showed an improvement in recovery from trauma by reducing anxiety after giving a mineral rich supplement. There is also work going on with depression and our ability to absorb the B vitamins known as folates. This is all fascinating and makes perfect sense. If food has a profound effect on our heath, why wouldn’t it have a profound effect on our mental health?

Back when I first started as an RD, taking mega doses of vitamins was all the rage. People were spending oodles of money on vitamin multi-packs until researchers realized that in order to metabolize all those vitamins we were using up other crucial nutrients. It turns out that taking too much of some nutrients can cause a deficiency in others leading to a diminishment of health and well-being.

Did you know, however, that there is exciting research going on that demonstrates how nutrients can take on a role of reducing psychological and psychiatric symptoms? The question that is being asked is, “can diet be used to curb mental disorders?” The answer is a resounding yes! According to studies reprinted in Psychology Today, research is showing how levels of omega-3 fatty acids are an integral component in the prevention of depressive symptoms and suicide. Studies show that men with the lowest levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their cell membranes have the highest rates of suicide. Other research showed the decrease of depressive symptoms in patients who consumed the omega-3 fat, eicosapentaenoic acid. What’s not clear is whether taking supplements is as beneficial as eating foods containing the nutrients.

Lastly, but no less important, is the effect of diet on our microbiome.

There is intense study going on to understand the influence of our gut microbiome on our mental health. Gut bacteria communicate directly with many parts of our bodies including the brain. We have known for years of the connection between irritable bowel syndrome and symptoms of depression and anxiety. It used to be thought that our stress created the gastrointestinal symptoms. What if we’ve had it all wrong? Perhaps the symptoms are caused by our gut bacteria being out of whack and the anxiety or depression is part of those symptoms? How will this change how treatment is determined?

Students of Manasquan JOHN GEIGES: Manasquan HS Captain 1946 Championship Gridders

The year was 1946 and Manasquan High School was rolling through the football season, led by a gritty, hard-working fullback by the name of John Geiges. The senior, who wore #40, along with backfield partner, Alfred Morgan, eventually led the Warriors to a Central Jersey State Championship. Playing on both sides of the ball, John Geiges had a reputation for being able to take and give hard hits. A life-long Brielle resident, John Geiges, looks back now and knows that he is blessed. Blessed by a wonderful childhood on the river, blessed by a successful athletic career from high school to a semi-professional ball, and ultimately blessed by his family. I am fortunate to live nearby this living legend- but don’t ever let him hear you say those words! John Geiges is one of the most humble human beings that you will ever meet, this article was something I had to persuade him to take part in. Throughout my interview with Geiges, the words that kept coming up were; grateful, thankful, lucky and fortunate.

and ready to get back to classes and football….Rutgers had guys that were 25, 26 years old and they were a lot bigger than I was.” The staff at Rutgers knew that they had a gem in Geiges, but with such a large roster they told the eager 18 year old to enroll in Admiral Farragut Academy for a year and then come to Rutgers. During that year at Farragut, Geiges suffered a serious knee injury and was told he would never play again. “When I hear that I would never play football, the kid in me said why should I go to Rutgers if I cannot play football?” Admittedly he was very disappointed but called upon the words of his former coach to get him through this difficult time.

After graduating Manasquan HS in 1947, following a very successful career in both football and baseball, Geiges was awarded an athletic scholarship in football to Rutgers.

This opportunity was appealing to him because he could continue his playing career while getting an education close to home.

Coach Magee was a big influence on me and instilled a lot of confidence in me and this I carried with me through my life especially when I was unable to continue the sport I loved to play.”

Fortunately for Geiges a comeback was made possible when he starred for the Point Pleasant Pelicans in the Jersey Shore Football League. In the two years he was on the squad, the Pelicans finished in first and second place in the league.

The community of Point Pleasant had afforded Geiges the opportunity to continue his football career. It also provided him the chance encounter with his wife, Doris, at the Point Pleasant Recreation Center. In speaking of influential people in his life, Geiges spoke of how his wife is ‘..at the top of the heap…’ Although they have their moments, he said with a grin, ‘...she has always been there to support me in all that I have done and I am a very, very lucky man….’

Not many members of the community are aware of the state champion living among them and he was a little embarrassed when his neighbors found out and made a fuss about his achievements. A championship sweatshirt was made for John and his wife, and they were presented to them on Thanksgiving, just after Manasquan’s win over Wall HS. Although he does not get to see many games anymore, he does follow the team’s accomplishments in the local papers. John and Doris Geiges continue to enjoy their lives in the cape in Brielle that John built himself in 1956. He enjoys walking his dog, Piper, and chatting with his neighbors and their kids. John Geiges is a true gentleman and this author is fortunate to have been able to learn and share his story.
