Fashion Frenzy Fashion is Not Frivolous

Never underestimate the importance of your wardrobe!

Fashion, my friends, is not frivolous. It should not be treated as something silly and not worth your time and attention. Actually, your style holds some serious scientific insights about you and your life. There have been many studies on this topic. It’s known as Enclothed Cognition. In scientific terms, it explains the systemic influence that clothes have on the wearer’s psychological process.

It also takes into account how the people you come into contact with respond to you. Many of the studies focus on how people respond to someone wearing a white lab coat. Those in the white lab coat are rated high on the scale for authority, attentiveness and focus on details. It does not matter who was wearing the white lab coat , all of the results were the same.

I felt physically strong during my pregnancy. And I felt mentally strong for tackling a new business system. I took long walks , ate great food and visited with a favorite cousin of mine. Hard to believe, but every time I open that shoe box all of those memories flood back. I always smile as I slip on those shoes.

I also have clothes that I no longer wear because of the memories they stir up. When I received the call from my obgyn I knew something was wrong. She asked me to come in while the office was closed. As I showered and got dressed I remember what I was thinking. “What will I wear to find out that I have cancer?” I chose a bright orange sweater, my favorite jeans and a pair of awesome shoes. I wanted the universe to know that I was showing up and meant business. Luckily , all went well for me. I had the best care, the best support and the best results. That outfit was a physical expression of how I wanted to feel - strong, bright and seen.

It served its purpose. You have the power to create how you want to feel.

This study connects the clothing to the symbolic meaning that certain items hold. In fact, there’s a lot of symbolic meaning in the clothes we wear every day and therefore the experiences we have because of how we are treated when we are in those outfits.

You have a physical experience when you get dressed - you feel comfortable , powerful, playful, in command. And then you associate certain clothes with these feelings and the memories you created while you were wearing them.

Your outfit is a non-verbal expression of your personality - it’s a way to say who you are without actually saying a word. So, what do you want to say ? Can’t find the words? Can’t find the right outfit?

When you feel physically comfortable in your clothes it translates to a sense of confidence. You focus better on your work because you aren’t distracted by your too tight trousers or your baggy blouse. You are more likely to speak up and step in - resulting in being noticed for your contributions at work. You will continue to pick those clothes , and similar outfits, that make you feel strong and confident in order to recreate those positive experiences.

Your wardrobe determines how you feel and move through the world - literally and metaphorically.

So, pay attention when you have a good day. Think of the days when you crushed it at work, had a fun nite out with friends, really connected with your partner. Chances are, you were wearing your favorite color, or a favorite pair of jeans or fabulous shoes. These things made you feel a certain way. Then you went about your day as the best version of yourself - really showing up and being present. Those around you responded to that energy. You created memories that you now connect to those items.

I’m always looking for ways to sneak some extra nutrition and veggies into my families diet, and after a recent conversation with a dietician at an oncology center, I’m more motivated than ever.

She shared with me that approximately one third of all cancers are preventable through proper diet and nutrition. Broccoli is well -known to be a cancer-fighting antioxidant, and detoxifying stimulator. It’s also a vegetable my family readily eats, so it was a logical choice to start. I made a dozen of these muffins one day and they were gone the next, with my kids gobbling them up for breakfast and lunch. The food processor makes prep a snap, in less than 10 minutes. Enjoy!

¼ cup panko seasoned bread crumbs (GF can be substituted) Pulse broccoli, beans and onions in small batches in a food processor until coarsely chopped, and place in a large bowl.

Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Scoop mixture into greased cupcake tins using an ice cream scoop and sprinkle top with bread crumbs Bake in a preheated 375 degree oven for 22-25 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm.

The Power of Positive Thinking How to Stay Motivated in the Cold

The New Year brought with it some major weather changes. Dropping temperatures and a “bomb cyclone” winter storm dumped high amounts of snow from Florida to Canada. These artic temperatures can make it difficult to remain motivated and to stick to a New Year intention or resolution. The darkness and cold doesn’t make it easy to bounce out of bed and get motivated. My clients and I have had some creative excuse busters to get motivated on cold, dark mornings and frigid evenings.

If the dark and cold are a drainer for you to stay motivated to climb out of bed, try setting your thermostat to increase the temperature right before you are scheduled to wake up. This will make it toasty warm when rising. If the lack of daylight is an issue, put a lamp next to your bed that can adjust the wattage of light out-put. A dimmed light or a low wattage can help create a daylight type atmosphere. Lay out your clothes for working out the night before so you can bee-line to get dressed quickly. Warm up inside by doing some jumping jack or push-ups before you head out the door. Maybe you’re lucky enough to have a remote car starter so you can slip right into an already heated car.

If you’re not looking forward to your daily work-out routine alone, comradery through a local organized sport is always a great motivation. Most towns offer an organized public, free or inexpensive sport that is held once a week or more. Basketball, volleyball, or even indoor soccer is a great way to get fit and be social. Some of my clients have met life-long friends playing indoor sports during the winter time. Not only do they get active by playing the sport, everyone might gather and share a bite to eat or possibly grab a drink afterward.

Looking forward to meeting your friends out is a great motivator. Perhaps you might even become their teacher.

If you are a seasoned athlete or know the work-out better than the new person, you may become like a mentor and motivator to them.

Joining a gym is another great way to keep your motivation.

Paying a monthly membership can keep you focused on your goal. No one likes to pay for something they aren’t using. Set goals by registering for a race in the Spring so you will need to stick to a 12-week training calendar to hit your goal. This plan also has you fit before summer making the transition into brighter and warmer days much easier.

If getting out of the house is just too difficult with low temps and darker days than you should consider a home practice.

You’ll feel guilty if you aren’t sticking to your goals and think about how amazing you’ll feel once you’ve worked-out.

YouTube has an array of works-outs that can be downloaded in a few seconds. Yoga, Pilates, and even cardio work-outs of various time limits are available for you to create your own motivation, any time of day. Meditation is a great way to end a work-out. Deep breathing exercises and time to unwind has amazing benefits to the body.

If all of these motivators aren’t your cup of tea you may need to consider adjusting your diet to stick to your goals. If you are unable to keep to your work-out routine, meditation times, or just staying motivated you should increase more alkalizing foods into your diet such as, leafy greens and fruit. Have a break-up with all of the sugars and complex carbs in your diet. These can include cakes, cookies, white breads and non-whole-wheat pasta. Those foods just pack on the pounds a nd add to the lack of motivation. Too many of the wrong carbohydrates and in excess amounts lowers your energy and therefore adds to depleted emotions.

So much can destroy motivation and kill your momentum. The best way to steer clear of the excuses is not to create them at all. Clear the hurdles that seem to be standing in your way from achieving your goals.

Remember what works for you. Intentions? Goals? Friends? Indoors?

Students of 08742 MMS Eighth Graders Travel to D.C.

In November, Memorial Middle School eight graders embarked on a three-day field trip to Washington DC. This annual excursion, a Point Boro middle school right of passage, is a highly anticipated eighth grade privilege to the see sites and landmarks important to our country’s history. Five tour buses, full of eighth graders and chaperones, left MMS on for a two night journey to our nation’s capitol and, with a jam packed schedule, we learned a lot, had a great time and responsibly enjoyed a small taste of traveling as respectful, responsible, young adults. I’d like to share a brief overview of our adventures…

On Friday, our last day in D.C., we visited Arlington National Cemetery. There, MMS students dedicated a wreath to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. After the changing of the guards, four students were selected to participate in the wreath laying ceremony where they carried a wreath and stood it in front of the tomb. It was a solemn and beautiful ceremony that I felt grateful to experience, especially having learned so much about the history of it during our tours. We wrapped up our trip with a visit to the White House, Ford’s Theater, Petersen House, and the Iwo Jima Memorial. Last stop was a group photo and we headed home to Point Pleasant.

It all started on Wednesday, November 15th, 2017, early in the morning, when students arrived in the MMS cafeteria to have bags checked, assemble in to groups, and board the buses.

We arrived in Washington D.C., at about noon and eagerly began our tour of The Smithsonian Museums, including the Air and Space, American History, and Natural History museums.

Later, all of the groups met at the Newseum: The Interactive Museum of News and Journalism, a relatively newer museum which opened in 2008. We viewed exhibits about the Media, the First Amendment, and the evolution of communication.

We saw exhibits and learned a lot about the FBI, September 11th, Pulitzer Prize winning photography, science, space and even pop culture. That first night, we also took a night tour of several Memorials, including the 9/11, Pentagon Memorial, Thomas Jefferson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr., and World War II Memorials.

This was a wonderful trip and I would like to end by saying thank you to everyone involved. Our chaperones and teachers who did so much planning to make it a really special trip for us, the bus drivers & tour guides who taught us so much and our parents for all their support. It was an incredible privilege to go and definitely an experience we will not forget.

Thursday morning began bright and early with a trip to the Capitol Building. This, personally, had to be one of my favorite parts of the trip because we got to go on a guided tour of the building, including the Rotunda, a room with cast-iron dome roof and full of art. Later, we toured the Mount Vernon Mansion, which once was the house that George and Martha Washington lived in; we got to see what life was like during the Revolutionary War and visited George Washington’s grave. Next, we went to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, where we saw artifacts, original photos and accounts about the Holocaust and World War II. We ended Thursday touring the Korean War, Vietnam War, and Lincoln Memorials.

Rover Rescue Speaking Dog

Gone are the days of old school dog training when crates were used for punishment or time out. Crates are an amazing training tool, and many dogs actually grow to enjoy quiet time in crates. Of course, we can’t just stick a dog in a crate for eight hours with no prior experience. Like anything else, crate training should be done on a gradient.

It’s a good idea to introduce the crate as early as possible. Leave it in a common area for a few days before beginning training. This allows dogs to check it out on their own terms. An easy first step is to throw some treats near the door of the crate. If your dog seems comfortable with this, you can move the treats inside the crate. Leave the door open and allow your dog to come in and out freely.

Once your dog is comfortable entering and exiting the crate for treats, feeding in a crate is a great way to build positive associations. You can leave the door open at first, still allowing your dog to come and go at their leisure. If no anxiety is presented, try closing the door for short intervals. Food puzzles or stuffed Kongs are great crate activities. If your dog isn’t food motivated, you can try giving a special toy or extra soft bed.

It’s good to gradually increase crate time, always keeping an eye out for potential stress and anxiety. It’s helpful to be home while crating your dog until you are sure they are comfortable inside. Even then, start out with quick hour or two errand runs before leaving a dog for extended periods of time. Patience in the beginning stages will greatly benefit you and your dog long term.

Leaving the crate door open while you are home allows your dog to decide if they want to go in. Crates can serve as a safe spot, a potential break from strangers, bad weather, or other stressful situations. High-energy dogs can get over stimulated and crates are a great option for decompression time. Crates are also perfect for destructive dogs and potty training. Having treats, bones, and enrichment for crate time is a great idea even when a dog is already acclimated to the crate. They are a great option in case of a natural disaster or emergency evacuation.

What kind of crate to buy is personal preference. There are wire, plastic, soft sided, heavy duty, or even travel crates. The most important factor is size. Dogs should be able to stand up comfortably and turn around. If you’re unsure or your dog may still have some growing to do, go with the bigger size.

Of course, the bigger the crate, the more expensive it can get. Secondhand crates are just as useful as new ones, just check for holes or potential chewed up areas.

Don’t worry if your dog doesn’t seem to like a crate at first, give it time. Most dogs do warm up to them.

If a dog has had prior negative crate experience, it can be helpful to get a trainer involved.

Students of 08742 Point Pleasant High School Students Win Big in Congressional App Challenge

When used effectively, technology enhances standards-based learning across the curriculum. Because technological fluency is essential for living and working in the 21st century and beyond, the Point Pleasant School District has made every effort to integrate technology into virtually every classroom and curriculum content area.

Mr. Gattuso’s students recently added yet another award to their already impressive list of achievements when the app “Lunch Buddy,” created by group of four of his students was named First Place winner in the Fourth Congressional District’s 2017 Congressional App Challenge.

The Congressional App Challenge is a competition aimed at encouraging U.S. high school students to learn how to code by creating their own applications. One-hundred-ninety-three congressional districts in 43 states participate in the Challenge that is intended to highlight the value of computer science and STEM education, among them is New Jersey’s own 4th District, represented by Congressman Chris Smith.

The technology-based educational opportunities available in Point Pleasant Borough High School teacher Nick Gattuso’s class continue to go a step further, not only providing students with opportunities to gain valuable professional experience but also allowing them to put their technological savvy to use to affect meaningful change with the development of a series of specialized applications and programs for their fellow students and members of the community.

Representatives from Congressman Smith’s office recently visited Point Pleasant Borough High School, where they presented app designers Adrian Wittmann, Luke Boylan, Theresa Cardone and Jaspreet Kaur with certificates in honor of their app that was designed to assist Life Skills students with finding classmates to sit with at lunchtime.

Panthers Assisted Learning Software, or PALS is one such project. The suite of assistive learning applications that have been in development by Mr. Gattuso’s students over the last six years are designed for students enrolled in the high school’s Life Skills program for students with multiple disabilities. The apps, which include, a navigational tool to help students new to the Life Skills program navigate the high school; a program to simplify units of liquid measure; a money-changing app; a shopping simulator designed to help the students navigate the supermarket; and PALS HELP, a new collection of apps that help the students perform tasks related to their jobs at Ocean Medical Center. The PALS apps have earned Mr. Gattuso’s students not only the appreciation of their peers and the teachers from the Life Skills Program but also the recognition of various organizations, like, the NJEA documentary news magazine program Classroom Close-up NJ, which featured a profile of the Mr. Gattuso’s class, students and the apps last year. The PALS initiative has also been honored by the New Jersey Schools Boards Association, who awarded the apps their 2016 Innovations in Special Education Award, as well as finalist standing in the 2017 STEAM TANK Challenge.

In addition to receiving a $250 credit for Amazon Web Service to be split among the Congressional App Challenge winners, the students along with Mr. Gattuso - have been invited to attend the “House of Code” App Challenge Reception in Washington DC in the spring. At the reception, they’ll have the opportunity to demo their app for tech industry leaders as well as members of Congress!

Parental Guidance Executive Functioning

Case Study: A bright and highly verbal 5th grade student is able to breeze through teacher guided math problems quicker than most peers, but has difficulty controlling the impulse to call out her answers. She consistently performs well on tests but because her homework grade is low because she forgets to hand it in. It really has been completed, but is stuffed in the bottom of her book bag, left on her kitchen table or mixed in with her science homework. This same student will converse in eloquent conversations with adults, but have difficulty organizing her thoughts to complete an essay.

Projects are often completed at the last minute and have careless errors due to her lack of attention to the grading rubric. Her parents are frustrated, her teachers are frustrated, but nothing compares to her own frustration. At school she works hard to hold it together. So when her teachers try to talk to her, she appears apathetic. At home her parents report she is energetic, emotionally reactive, easily frustrated with homework, and disorganized. It’s a multi-faceted conflict of cognitive potential and function, inhabiting the same body. This is a snapshot of a child with executive functioning difficulties.

Executive functioning is becoming a buzzword within educational and child development worlds, yet many professionals and parents lack an understanding of its impact. According to Understood.org, “Executive functions consist of several mental skills that help the brain organize and act on information. These skills enable people to plan, organize, remember things, prioritize, pay attention and get started on tasks. They also help people use information and experiences from the past to solve current problems.” There are many recognized diagnosis such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Autism and dyslexia that may impact a child’s executive skills, but executive functioning deficits can occur in neurotypical children as well. Situationally, emotional stress, changes in a home schedule, anxiety, trauma, and illness can disturb a child’s ability to organize, plan and initiate routine based cognitive demands.

In responses to increased awareness there is also increased research of evidenced based interventions. Most importantly is the development of a growth mind-set* for all those involved, including the individual struggling. Because executive skills are a function of the pre-frontal cortex in your brain, there is a great deal of potential to improve while the brain is developing. So even if your child is 20 years old, there is at least another 5 years of brain development to tap. There are a variety of private therapy services available, and if your child qualifies, support services at school, but I can’t over emphasize the impact of the home support network. The following are strategies that I’ve found successful as a therapist, and can be implemented at home. ● Encourage flexible thinking - Ask your child “what if…” questions, and role play possible responses. Introduce Plan B’s, “B” means a back-up plan, and encourages alternate solutions and problem solving. Force choices daily, allowing your child to gain confidence in his decision making.

Introduce riddles, jokes and multiple meaning words. Have your child complete the same task in various ways, such as making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich using only a fork. ● Teach Organization- Start with weekly calendars,post-it note reminders, and pictures for nonreaders. Note sports practice, after care or bus days, and buying vs. brown bagging lunch.

Create visual sequence strips or checklists for morning routines, and after school routines and a designated homework area crate with homework supplies. If your home lacks privacy create a study nook using a tri-fold board at the kitchen table. Color code folders, notebooks and book socks for older students. Assist with clean out bookbags weekly, discarding unneeded papers.

● Chunk it - Big tasks and long term projects are daunting for a child with executive function struggles. Everything can be broken down into small tasks. If cleaning the room is a challenge give daily tasks,for example, empty garbage can, clean mirror, organize toys, and vacuum. If a long term project is given provide short term deadlines, and reach out to teachers to assist with this.

Have your child assist with planning a party, so they understand sequencing, and prioritizing. ● Teach self-monitoring- If your child is constantly seeking adult approval and reassurance, ask him how he thought he did. Be honest about the performance but sandwich feedback so that every area of needed improvement is surrounded by two areas of accomplishment. “ I really liked the way you emptied your garbage can without being reminded. We need to work on a new strategy to organize your toys though, and you put in great effort trying to make your bed.” ● Praise effort and perseverance - because this is the skill that your child needs to succeed.

Less focus on outcomes and more focus on individual effort will reinforce the individual behaviors that are needed to overcome executive functioning deficits.

Whether you’re in a relationship, recovering from a broken heart or on a journey to self-love setting intentions around love and intimate relationships helps us to grow as individuals. Many people tend to think magically about the idea of love without doing any of the practical and emotional work to help draw a healthy relationship to them. Aphrodite Bath Ritual

The perfect bath to take when you want to add a little extra spark to your aura to attract love into your life.

It’s also a great way to strengthen the love between you and your partner! Ideally this bath should be taken on a new moon or on a Friday - the day aligned with Venus, the planet of love.

Supplies: Rose or jasmine incense, 1 red candle, 1 pink candle, petals from one dozen fresh pink or red roses, 1 bottle of rose essential oil, 1 bottle of jasmine essential oil, 1 rose quartz crystal (2 if taking a bath with a partner) 1 sage smudge stick.

1. Sage the bathroom. Light the sage stick, place it in an abalone shell or fireproof container to catch the ashes, waft the smoke around the room cleansing the energy in the room.

2. Burn the incense next to the tub.

3. Light the two candles.

4. Add the fresh rose petals to the bath water.

5. Add 6 drops of the rose oil and 6 drops of the jasmine oil to the bath water.

6. Add the rose quartz.

7. During the bath, visualize a warm white light glowing around your heart. Hold the rose quartz over your heart clearing the clutter from the day to day tasks life gives us.

8. Soak for about 20 minutes, relaxing and continuing to meditate with the rose quartz.

9. After you are finished, place your crystal on your night stand. Give the rose petals back to the Earth.

Meditation Ritual For Self-Love

Supplies: Rose quartz ( a piece that fits comfortably in the palm of your hand).

Hold the rose quartz in your dominant hand. Breathe in and out deeply seven times. Affirm out loud, “I am love” say this affirmation 3 times.

Lie down on a bed, yoga mat, or any other flat surface and set a timer for 20 minutes. Place the rose quartz over your heart, close your eyes and focus on breathing. Know in your heart and soul that love is the foundation of all things. When the timer rings, slowly bring yourself back into awareness and be kind to yourself today.

We Librarian and Drexel “can’t” take a night off because who will Graduate Student drive the kids to soccer practice, or cook dinner? We “can’t” afford to spend an extra 20 bucks on our nails. There were a lot of reasons why my ideas just wouldn’t work, and trying to make it happen actually seemed to create more stress – which was the opposite of what I was trying to do.

The major undercurrent here was that many women seem to feel trapped by everyday life and responsibilities. I get it, believe me.

I may not have kids, but I was a broke college student working three jobs to support myself for the past seven years. There are a lot of heavy burdens we have to carry every day, and the idea of deviating from the norm can be really worrying.

However, this is just that – an idea. Yes, I understand there are real struggles at hand, but think about it. If you needed that extra 20 bucks for your son’s birthday present, you’d find it, wouldn’t you?

If you needed to find time to run an errand for a friend in need, you’d make it happen. So why are we the ones who fall by the wayside?

Some women argue that putting ourselves first is selfish or narcissistic, even, but I think we forget a very, very simple and old rule. You can’t take care of anyone else if you don’t take care of yourself. It’s not selfish to take a night off from responsibilities.

You have friends, significant others, and family members that you can ask to help you out.

Put our Creative Vision to work for you!

And don’t kid yourselves – it is not selfish to ask for help. We all deserve a little time for ourselves to recharge and breathe – and “we all” includes you! Be kind to yourself. Make yourself a priority.

I’m not saying that you need to forget about everyone else and all the things you have to do. But think about how much easier it will be to go back to your normal routine feeling refreshed, relaxed, and just a little saner.

The Book Report “End Game” by David Baldacci A book review by Brian Favretto

After a two year hiatus, government assassin Will Robie is back in action and more deadly than ever. The fifth book in the series with Will Robie and his partner Jessica Reel picks up where “The Guilty” (2015) left off, and it doesn’t disappoint.

Like most books by David Baldacci, “End Game” jumps right into action and grabs our interest within the first few pages. We find Will Robie on a solo mission in London, and we are quickly reminded just how good he is at his job.

Outnumbered seventeen to one, he beats the odds and the bad guys, completing the mission in superhero fashion. We are then taken to Iraq, where Jessica Reel is on an unrelated mission of her own. Working with a SEAL team to raid and destroy an ISIS compound, they quickly find themselves caught in an ambush, Reel also defying the odds and being rescued after the mission falls apart.

As professional assassins and not detectives, they struggle to get an investigation rolling, but they are able to use intimate knowledge of Blue Man to find proof that he was in fact abducted. They feel like they are swimming against the current, unable to crack the one piece of evidence that they keep coming back to. Everyone who has knowledge of this evidence is turning up dead. The clock is ticking, and Robie and Reel know that if Blue Man is still alive, he won’t be for much longer.

The chase becomes frantic, as does the pace of the book. The “end game” remains finding Blue Man alive, but as time begins to run out, the “end” becomes a “game” unlike any other- a game in which perhaps there will be no winner.

David Baldacci is a master storyteller, and the action in his books is gripping. Robie and Reel have made it through some unrealistic situations, as is the case in this novel as well, but let’s remind ourselves that fiction is meant to entertain, and this book does just that. While I didn’t find myself losing sleep for the sake of turning pages, Baldacci is genius in the way he keeps our interest. He finds a way to end almost every chapter in cliffhanger fashion. Closing lines like: “And that was when all hell broke loose in Grand, Colorado”, or “Only it wouldn’t be like any other night for Jessica Reel, ever”, usually forced me to read further than I had anticipated.

These missions serve the plot only to refresh our recollection of the capabilities of these two professionals. With virtually no time to recover, they are called home to partner on a domestic mission of even greater importance.

They learn that their handler, Roger “Blue Man” Walton has fallen off the grid during his annual vacation to his hometown in Colorado. The CIA, knowing that Blue Man holds such valuable national security knowledge, must activate their best assets, Robie and Reel, in order to find him. The “end game” is to bring him home safely. On a personal level, Robie and Reel are not on the best of terms, but they realize the need to work together seamlessly for the sake of a successful mission.

I’ve always enjoyed Baldacci’s novels, and “End Game” is no exception; it also works as a stand alone novel. He combines scary realism with the far-fetched, blood and gore with romance and suspense with deception.

Once in Colorado, they encounter trouble on a level they couldn’t have predicted. The local boondocks have attracted and fostered groups that thrive on the fringes of society. A well-armed NeoNazi group and an equally well-armed cult-like group called King’s Apostles are not very pleased to know that two agents of the U.S. Government are poking around on their turf. Along with this, a miniscule local police department and an apprehensive state police department leave Robie and Reel to fend mostly for themselves, which is how they prefer to operate anyhow.

Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall- the seasons and the changing weather around us is often more impactful than we realize.

In the winter we wrap ourselves in layer upon layer and still shiver down the sidewalk. In the summer we slather ourselves in sunscreen and splash in the ocean, but no matter how much lemonade we drink we end up sweating in the humidity. If you watch the news, it might seem like catastrophic weather events destroy lives and homes every other day. Why are our ecosystems collapsing? If our ice caps are melting, why is it fourteen degrees in Point Pleasant? What is to blame for this meteorological mess?

What we experience as weather is a complicated concoction of the Earth’s position in space, ocean patterns, and wind. Believe it or not, global warming has the power to influence these patterns and send freezing weather our way. Additionally, the increased temperature of the air means more moisture and therefore more precipitation. Point Pleasant is quite familiar with the flooding this can cause.

It is likely you’ve heard the terms “global warming” and “climate change”. Global warming is an important phrase but a misleading one. It’s hard to believe Earth is getting warmer when your joints are turning blue from the cold. Some individuals use global warming interchangeably with climate change, but global warming is just one piece of the puzzle that is climate change.

Climate change is about abnormal extremes- both highs and lows. That being said, global warming can still bury your car in three feet of snow.

There is one last crucial bit of information to keep in mind.

Weather is what you experience when you step outside your house; like a rain shower or gusts of wind. Climate, however, is the weather patterns measured over great lengths of time.

It is impossible to alter the path our climate is progressing on as an individual.

Be that as it may, it should be the goal of every person to reduce their carbon footprint.

The only way to fix things now is together.

This all starts with how the solar system is set up. Earth sits tilted on an imaginary axis. The Earth spins on its axis, giving us our days and nights. Earth also orbits the sun, giving us our years. The sun shines down on Earth’s atmosphere in the form of visible light and in forms that the human eye cannot see.

Some of this radiation is released back into the atmosphere, but some of this radiation is trapped by layers of gases known as greenhouse gases. Much like a greenhouse, these gases trap radiation and warm the inside. The most common greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide.

The reason the greenhouse effect matters now is because there is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than ever. The burning of fossil fuels since the industrial revolution has released massive quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The Earth as a whole is heating up.

Healthy Morsels, II Healthy Diet, Healthy Mind

Flexibility and compassion for self are needed for successful change. There will be the lapses but if you cut yourself some slack and make adjustments you will be able to minimize the lapses.

If you do have a lapse, and you will, treat yourself with kindness and love. Let your inner critic know you hear it and then tell it you are good. Pick up where you left off and know any change is a good change. Until next time, eat healthy, be happy.

If you are like most people you may be nearing the end of the New Years resolution period. We start off the New Year with awesome intentions but by the time February rolls around we find we do not have the gumption to keep up with the changes we set in play on January 1. If you find yourself described by these words you are not alone. Before you throw in the towel, take some time to ponder what is going on for you right now. There are some changes you can make to your current difficult routine that may allow you to keep going without throwing in the entire towel.

First and foremost, was the resolution or intention realistic?

This is especially important if your resolution was weight, diet or exercise related. There is so much hype and false information out in the media and in society about what a person should be able to accomplish regarding diet, exercise and weight and how they should do it. It is NOT typical for a person to lose 10 pounds in a week. It is NOT realistic to expect yourself to eat “clean” forever. The truth is it takes a person burning 3500 extra calories to lose one pound of weight.

That works out to be a caloric deficit of 500 calories every day. That is tough! Once you decide what the truth is you have to think about how it will work for you. If you have to get up at 4:00AM to get to the gym and you aren’t a morning person what is the likelihood you will continue going to the gym?

Please take into account what is realistic for you. If you hate something you will not continue. Really, you will not continue. Why should you? There are many ways to work toward your goals. Doing something you hate doesn’t have to be one of them.

Second, if you are willing to make some adjustments in timing of reaching your goals you have lots of ways to change what you are doing. I know impatience is a big presence in the arena of weight loss but the truth is that being impatient is often what causes people to throw in the towel. Do you have to lose one pound per week?

Would you settle for a half-pound if that rate of weight loss allowed you to eat more of the foods you love? Would you be willing to walk in the afternoons instead of fighting to hit the gym at 4:00AM? Some changes are better than no changes. Weight loss is not an all or nothing endeavor. There are not many things in life that need to be an all or nothing endeavor.

Students of Manasquan We Are Family — Warrior Hockey teammates are closer than you think!

The Manasquan High School Hockey season is off to a tremendous start in 2017-18 season and things are looking very good for the future of Warrior Hockey. The team is currently 7-2 with some quality wins in the Shore Conference A Central Division. To give some perspective, last season the team lost to Freehold Township 12-2, this season the tide has changed with Manasquan registering a 6-3 win over the Patriots. You may ask yourself, what is it that has given Manasquan the boost this season? Could there be something in the water? In my research I found out an interesting fact about this group- you could even call them a family.

This season, when the Warriors take the ice, you may notice a lot of the same names in the program. The song, ‘We Are Family’ is extremely appropo- there are five sets of family members on the squad and this has certainly benefited the program and can be attributed to some of their success. Conte, Farinacci, Franzoni, Sepe and Wells- all times two!

Assistant Coach Will Conte and brother, junior forward James Conte have enjoyed sharing the ice and James credits Will with helping to improve his game, “...He’s not afraid to tell me if I am doing something wrong and won’t hold back. He tells me after every shift what I can do to be better.” The Conte name has been with the program for many years as eldest brother Matt was an assistant when Will was a player on the squad. This season Will is standing on the bench as James takes the ice. Freshman cousins Michael and Chris Farinacci are no strangers to the ice and have been playing travel hockey since they were toddlers (-ten years to be exact). Their knowledge of the game and trust in each other have made in immediate impact. The same goes for the Sepe brothers, Noah and Luke, who have been on the ice for years playing hockey, and are big contributors to the Warrior program.

Another family that is represented on the ice is the Wells family. Alec and Trevor are on the squad and are tapping into that brotherly love to help the Warriors to some impressive victories. Then you have the Franzoni twins, Mike and Matt, who are sophomore transfers from Saint John Vianney. Their arrival was met with excitement and great anticipation as they were responsible for 37 goals and 26 assists last season. Their presence and ability to find one another on the ice is something that is unique to these identical twins.

The Franzoni’s feel fortunate to have each other out on the ice and that ‘twin sense’ helps them to know where each other is during intense moments on the ice. “...My brother and I have been playing together for a while now, so we have built up chemistry”, says sophomore Mike Franzoni. The benefits of family have been recognized by other players on the team and they see that there is a distinct advantage to having so much similar DNA on the ice. Senior defenseman Connor Tuzeneu says of the Franzoni’s, “...they are like a power pair...they know each other so well and how one another plays...they always know where the other will be like a well-oiled machine.”
