Arthritis Pain Can Ruin the Holidays!

According to some experts, eight out of 10 Americans over the age of 55 suffer from one form of arthritis or another. This is something that can cause a lot of problems in how you function, each and every day!

In general terms, arthritis is a gradual breakdown or deterioration of the joint spaces in your musculoskeletal system. In many cases, arthritis can become so painful and debilitating, simple tasks such as opening a jar or holding a pencil can be difficult.

Here’s the deal. Arthritis affects everyone in different ways. In some, joints in the spine, fingers, wrists, shoulders, knees-even toes-lose their normal shape and large amounts of fluid and debris fill the joint space. There are many causes of arthritis, but we want to address this as soon as we can. A major cause is simply age.

Injury, suppressed or weakened immune systems are some of the other reasons for people having arthritis.

Some people have no choice-it is simply hereditary, but again I think that comes from them doing exactly what their parents did, and eating and drinking like their parents.

In most people, the body responds to the onset of arthritis by making extra bone. Your body makes this material in an attempt to shore up the degenerating joint. Kind of like you using super glue on something trying to make it as strong as it was. This additional material, or overgrowth, is called a bone spur or osteophyte.

• Bone spurs are typically found in the joint or disc spaces, where cartilage has begun to break down or deteriorate.

• Bone spurs sometimes block the spaces where nerve roots leave the spinal canal.

There are many symptoms of arthritis, including:

• Burning

• Cramping

• Inflammation

• Joint pain

• Loss of muscle control

• Muscle spasms

• Numbness

• Pain

• Stabbing pain in the extremities

• Joint stiffness

Major types of arthritis include osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

The Power of Positive Thinking Divorce During the Holidays

Divorce during the holidays is just plain hard. This time of year is supposed to be filled with happiness.

You’re stuck in emotional and financial turmoil. You look at everyone around you and feel like life has handed you lemons. Can anything be done to up your holiday cheer? With a bit of planning and forethought you can fill your holidays with more joy than tears.

Surviving the holidays during divorce can be done! You can actually thrive, not just survive. A good dose of positivity, determination, creativity and planning will increase the fun and lessen the blues.

Here’s just a few to Grinch-Proof You! STRATEGIZE FOR FAMILY GATHERINGS. Be prepared for the awkward. Think of responses before you meet some of those less than supportive family members and “friends” and make sure you have an exit plan. For those more difficult events, you might want to recruit a “wing man”. One quick fail-safe plan for those awkward questions is to turn the conversation around and ask “…and how are you?’ People love to chat about themselves and it will provide cover for you.

Students of 08742 Seniors Share Secrets of High School Success with Freshman Class

The transition from middle to high school can be an exciting yet intimidating time for students. Along with the new freedoms that come with being a high school freshman there are also new challenges as students learn to acclimate to more demanding academic schedules, increased responsibilities and expectations and the adjustment to being part of a larger student body.

Navigating a new campus, adapting to a more rigorous course load, and familiarizing oneself with new teachers and students requires a period of adjustment and some special guidance, which is why Point Pleasant Borough High School’s Guidance Department developed the Freshman Transition Program.

Among the topics discussed were, study skills, organization, common challenges, where and from whom students can receive extra help, academic integrity, getting involved, finding balance between academics and co-curricular activities, finding a niche, attendance, responsibility, and community service.

“The Freshman Transition Program is the Guidance Department’s initiative to help freshmen acclimate to high school life,” said Guidance Counselor Katrina Salvatoriello.

According to Ms. Salvatoriello, though the program has existed at the high school for some time, it was recently expanded with the goal of providing freshmen with the skills and strategies necessary to support their social, emotional, and academic success.

“Under the newly expanded program, the guidance counselors have met and will continue to meet with the freshman in small groups,” she said. “During the group sessions, students learn the necessary skills and strategies to monitor their academic growth.

Goal setting and interventions are also discussed.”

The panelists also doled out advice on preparing for college.

The sessions also include hands-on tutorials in the use of Naviance, the district’s college and career readiness platform and the Parent Portal, on which the students learn to monitor their grades and assignments.

“For added support and encouragement, we pair the freshman with peer mentors,” she said.

“Start keeping track of your activities now,” said panelist Morgan Mulvey.

“There will be things you do now that you may not remember when it comes time to complete your resumes for your college applications. Write everything down now. You can also begin researching schools now to narrow down your selections because the earlier you start the better.”

New to this year’s Freshman Transition Program was the Welcome New Student Social, which was held in early October for students new to the Point Pleasant School District.

Panelist Michael Petillo shared some tips to avoid conflict with others, he said, “You’ll learn there’s a big change from middle to high school. As you mature, you learn to respect others and though you may not get along with everyone, that’s ok but there’s never any reason to make anyone feel bad about themselves.”

Counselors, select teachers and even students enrolled in the high school’s new Tomorrow’s Teacher program – a program that allows aspiring teachers to gain specialized training and hands-on experience in teaching while also earning college credit - coordinated the 45-minute event, during which the new students engaged in ice-breaking activities and worked with peer mentors.

Emcee Trevor McNamara also weighed in on what to do when encountered with a bullying situation, saying, “If you’re being bullied tell a friend, teacher or other trusted adult.”

The panelists also fielded questions from the freshman, patiently answering their queries on subjects like grading, co-curricular activities and the SATs.

Another new initiative for this year’s Transition Program, included a student-led forum entitled, “Things I Wish I Knew as a Freshman”.

The panelists included James Fara, Ryan Henn, Allison Cooper, Morgan Mulvey, Annabella Schatzman, Kimberly Anilonis, Emily Strassheim, Michael Petillo, Nicole DeJacimo, Erin Cox, Meghan Seitter, Carson Swisher and Alex D’Amato.

On Oct. 11, while their peers in grades 10 and 11 were busy taking the PSAT’s, the high school’s ninth and select twelfth graders gathered in the auditorium for a tête-à-tête about high school life.

“The panel of 13 seniors, along with event emcees Tanner Gordon and Trevor McNamara, addressed the entire freshman class, discussing a variety of topics chosen to help the freshmen adjust

Students of 08742 Memorial School Sixth Graders Break Down Social Boundaries at Mix It Up Day

Station 2 – Relay – required students to work together as a team to accomplish a specific set of tasks. In addition to physical exercise and friendly competition, Station 3, Hula Hoop, also encouraged teamwork as students stood in a circle with their hands clasped and were required to pass the Hula Hoop around the circle without using their hands. And Station 4, the Hop Box, was a group jump rope exercise, requiring approximately eight students to jump a single rope simultaneously, with two additional students serving as turners.

The start of middle school represents a time of great change for Point Pleasant Borough’s students; it’s a time when complex new schedules and increased responsibilities blend with new peers as students from both district elementary schools come together for the first time, creating a new and completely different school experience to which it can be a challenge to adjust. To further complicate matters, middle school is typically when social boundaries become more pronounced, a scenario that can make the pressure to fit in overwhelming for many students. As these pressures escalate, so too can students’ feelings of isolation.

It is for this reason that seven years ago, Memorial Middle School’s Guidance Department launched Mix It Up Day, a day of activities and games designed to promote respect and tolerance among the school’s sixth grade students while encouraging them to identify, question and cross social boundaries.

Memorial Middle School’s Seventh Annual Sixth Grade Mix It Up Day was held at the school on Friday, Oct. 27, beginning at eighth period and lasting until the end of the school day.

“On Mix It Up Day, the sixth graders reported to the gym, where they received a small piece of colored paper indicating to which group they would belong,” said Ms. Kelly, who explained that the colored slips were distributed randomly. “Once the students had their group assignment, the guidance counselors assigned them to one of 11 activity stations.”

Station 10’s “If You Really Knew Me” had students finishing prompts supplied by randomly distributed cards from board game Ungame, a non-competitive learning/communication game that fosters listening skills as well as self-expression.

Students finished the card prompts, finishing statements like which fairy tale character they most identify with, their favorite sport, holiday, and year in school, their ideal vacation spots and dream gifts among others.

The groups of students spent seven minutes participating in each activity, including, Yoga; Relay; Hula Hoop; Hop Box; Interview; Chain of Kindness; If You Really Knew Me; Ball Game; Video Collage; Panther Paw; and Gift Wrapping.

Stations 7 and 9, Chain of Kindness and Panther Paw respectively, were designed to reinforce Respect, Responsibility, Kindness and/ or Character, which are the pillars of the school’s Positive Behavior Supports in Schools [PBSIS] initiative MMS Roars with Panther Pride. At Station 7 students wrote on a slip of paper an example of a good deed or kind act in which they were involved. The colorful papers were later linked together in a long chain to be hung in sixth grade wing of the school. At Station 9, students decorated panther paws with a specific pillar and accompanying message.

After completing an activity, the groups of students would rotate together to a subsequent station.

“All sixth-grade students participated in all of the 11 activity stations, each of which had a specific purpose and goal,” Ms. Kelly said.

The first four stations all shared a physical exercise component designed to encourage team building. At Station 1 – Yoga - students engaged in meditation and performed traditional yoga poses while also working with a partner to accomplish more complex poses.

The activities in Stations 5, 6, 8 and 10 provided students the opportunity to learn more about one another. In Station 5 – Interview - students worked in pairs, asking each other a series of questions about their partner’s name, hidden talents, favorite colors and teachers and other interests, the content from which was used to create Station 6’s Video Collages. At Station 8’s Ball Game, students sat in a circle to toss to their classmates a special ball that was pre-printed with prompts and statements that students completed according to the position of their thumb after catching the ball; whichever prompt their thumb touched was the prompt they completed, communicating thoughts on how helping others helps oneself, tips on how to alleviate sadness and how a sense of humor can help overcome negative emotions.

“The goal of Mix It Up Day is to encourage our sixth grade students to work together while learning about their peers, ideally establishing new friendships in the process,” said Guidance Counselor Jennifer Kelly, who worked with fellow counselors Amy Miele and Megan MacDonald to develop and coordinate the activities for this year’s event.

Rover Rescue Dealing with Storm Anxiety

Anyone who owns a dog with storm anxiety knows how traumatic of an experience it can be. Pinpointing exactly what sets a dog off is difficult. It can be a number of things; loud noises such as thunder, atmospheric pressure changes, rain, or intense wind are some examples.

Knowing which component of a storm affects a dog is not as important as preparing them before a storm hits.

During storm season, keep a close eye on the weather forecast. Once the storm arrives, a dog may be too over stimulated to focus on you and attempted distractions.

Getting your dog feeling safe is the main goal. Having a comforting environment such as a crate or well-insulated room can increase confidence. Forcing a dog outside in bad weather is intense, so be sure to try and walk or let out your dog before the storm rolls in. While they are calm enough to concentrate on a task, try giving them something else to focus on prior to the weather change. Some good options are Kongs stuffed with peanut butter, food puzzles, or training sessions.

Soothing music can be another useful distraction. Products such as Thundershirts or weighted blankets are great tools to help with anxiety. These should be used before the storm hits, as anxious behavior can make a dog more difficult to touch or even cause them to act out in ways they normally wouldn’t.

Fear can also make dogs destructive, so placing them in a crate or dog proof area helps prevent practice of damaging behavior. A dog will mostly likely sense the storm before we do, and more subtle signs of anxiety may be panting, pacing, whining, shaking, or trailing close behind you. Catching your dog before they enter panic mode is key. The more scared a dog is, the more difficult it is for them to concentrate on things other than anxiety.

Aromatherapy is a great calming method. Lavender, chamomile, and other essential oils can be spread on a dog’s collar.

There are also homeopathic herbs that can be added to food or treats. These should be given preemptively as well, before a dog becomes too anxious to eat. If your dog becomes stressed to a point that is out of control, consulting a veterinarian about storm meds is another option. Medication should always be a last resort, but some dogs are so terrified of storms it can be the only option to calm them.

Parental Guidance Getting Social

There was a time in my career that I didn’t know what a social story was, but today I can’t imagine working without them. The concept of a “social story” was developed by Carol Grey, in 1991. She was an educator specialized in children with autism. More recently, she opened the Grey Center for Social Learning in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Children with Autism often have difficulty picking up, and understanding social cues.

They may also struggle with perspective taking. So, simply reading a book about “Johnny sharing his toys”, is not enough. To the child with autism, it stinks to be Johnny, but the lesson on sharing toys is lost. So, all social stories follow a similar formula. One of the most important aspects, is that the story is written in the first person. When the story is read, the “I” is easily understood by the child with autism, and the child develops a meaningful connection to his own life. The stories are easily adapted to role play, so the child can also practice responses.

Most stories will start with a problem. The story will describe social cues about the “I” character and others. It will often describe the targeted behavior as well as proposed alternative behaviors.

They can be very simple in nature for young children, or more complex for older children. There is no subject that is taboo. While Carol Grey has a library of social stories she has written, it is easy to write your own. The formula goes something like this: Everyone Waits It is hard to wait. Selflessness – Globalized neural networks of “selfhood” become hypo or hyper-active, creating a transitory loss of “Ego” or executive function.

Flow is defined as an “optimal state of consciousness where we feel our best and perform our best.” When one is in flow concentration becomes so laser-focused that everything falls away. Action and awareness merge as one. Any sense of self and our sense of self-consciousness completely disappear.

Time dilates slowing down or speeding up and all aspects of performance are incredibly heightened. When was the last time you were doing something that had your full, undivided attention?

Something that had you so in the moment that time stood still and ceased to even exist, in which you were able to create something truly magical or achieve a goal. Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi first coined the term “Flow” in a book he wrote in 1990 called “Finding Flow”. In his book, Csikszentmihalyi says “Flow happens when a person’s skills are fully involved in overcoming a challenge that is just about manageable, so it acts as a magnet for learning new skills and increasing challenges.” “If challenges are too low, one gets back to flow by increasing them. If challenges are too great, one can return to flow state by learning new skills.” It’s the biggest revolution you’ve never heard of and its hiding in plain sight. For over a decade Silicon Valley executives like Eric Schmidt and Elon Musk, special operations like the Navy SEALS, the Green Berets as well as maverick scientists like Sasha Shulgin and Amy Cuddy have turned everything we thought about high performance completely upside down. They are trying to perfect the art of harnessing rare and controversial states of consciousness to solve critical challenges and outperform the competition.

Timelessness – Time is calculated all over the brain, so when prefrontal cortex deactivates time is distorted. Also, since information processing accelerates it can heighten perception of time density.

Attention is driven into the present without past/future distractions.

Effortlessness – The “Big Six” reward neurochemicals; Norepinephrine, dopamine, endorphins, anandamide, oxytocin and serotonin come online in varying sequences and concentrations, powerfully reinforcing the experience, enhancing learning and heightening well-being.

Richness – With executive function diminished, attention focused intently in the present moment and pattern recognition amplified, we get upstream of our “umwelt” or perceived reality. We experience more raw data in real time.

How You Can Enter “Flow”

Choose one thing that is a routine daily activity and turn it into a mindfulness practice. Make it something simple it can be brushing your teeth, doing the dishes or even walking up or down the stairs.

Step 1. Before you begin the activity, pause, then take three deep slow conscious breathes. Let your mind become fully engaged in the breath for that time and nothing else.

Step 2. Focus all your attention in the present moment. Pretend for the moment that past and future do not exist. Take awareness to your sense perceptions. Be fully present in the now.

Step 3. Slowly with deliberate movements, go about your activity.

Make it into a meditative practice but with an intensity of focus.

Step 4. Remain alert and keep the mind fully attentive to what you are doing in that moment only – not allowing it to slip off into unconscious mind chatter. Be completely absorbed in the activity as if you had just been born into this world.

You will feel the activity “come alive’ when you practice with mindfulness. If your mind does happen to slip off into ‘autopilot’ simply guide it back to being intensely engaged in what you’re doing.

Overtime you can bring flow into more activities during your day.

It’s a great way to cultivate true happiness and peace in daily life without changing at all on the external level. Every moment in life is a sacred gift and through moving in flow, we can live every moment to its fullest.

The Book Report The 34-Ton Bat by Steve Rushin A book review by Brian Favretto

The World Series has been decided and we spoiled Yankees fans will have to wait at least another year for a World Championship. Yet, as hard as it was to root for the team that eliminated my Yankees, it’s easy to be happy for an organization that has never before tasted victory on that level. Congratulations to the Houston Astros. That said, harder still is waiting for April to roll around again so I can see the double plays being turned and hear the wonderful “thwock” as the ball meets the bat. Until then, we can keep baseball alive in our hearts by reading “The 34-Ton Bat; The Story of Baseball as Told Through Bobbleheads, Cracker Jacks, Jock Straps, Eye Black and 375 Other Strange and Unforgettable Objects” by Steve Rushin.

Steve Rushin is a writer for “Sports Illustrated” and he has the game of baseball in his genes. He is part of a family that has been employed by baseball for 100 years. His greatgreat uncle Jack Boyle was the highest paid player in the game, earning $5,500 in 1892. In 1982, Rushin was the lowest paid in the game- earning $2.90/hr selling hot dogs for the Minnesota Twins.

Rushin set out to write a book that would bring to life all the inanimate baseball memorabilia that people hold dear to their hearts (and then some!), while telling the story of baseball’s place in the world.

Baseball is rich in history, and Rushin did some amazing research in order to fill us in on some lesser known nuances of the game. He tells us about two visionaries and early innovators of the bat and the mitt who knew nothing of actual vision. Pete Browning was known as the “Louisville Slugger” and inspired that popular line of bats. He believed that bathing his eyes in buttermilk and gazing directly into the sun improved his eyesight. Doc Bushong, the pioneer of the catcher’s mitt, attributed his good eyesight to the growing and maintenance of his mustache. Expanding on catcher’s mitts, before Bushong, they were for “sissies”, and players weren’t considered tough unless they’ve had their fingers broken enough times to make their hands looked like something out of a science fiction movie.

Rushin ties in stories about war, how the game was played behind the frontlines, as well as baseball’s role in developing the hand grenade. In Vietnam, “American boys were throw-

ing baseball grenades in an effort to defend the Catcher’s Mitt…” (the phrase used to describe the Song Be River north of Saigon because of its shape) “...and, by extension, democracy itself”. He tells us about the purveyors of hot dogs, peanuts, beer and soda that had special talents and climbed the corporate ladders. He tells us about the rise, fall and resurrection of the organ being played during games, and about the sport’s most famous song- written by someone who had never been to a game to experience peanuts or cracker jacks. He schools us on the resistance of each new piece of protective equipment that emerged, and how the MLB logo helped the most resisted piece gain universal acceptance. He tells us about an innovator whose sales pitch involved being kicked in the groin and smashed in the head with a bat. Is it any wonder that this man died childless and unmarried?

Perhaps my favorite part of the book is Rushin’s self-proclaimed “investigative urinalism”, where he points to the correlation between Ebbet Field’s nauseating urinals and the successful western migration of professional baseball teams. One such team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, had a marketing genius that forever changed the face of souvenir sales in the ballparks. I enjoyed this book, as any baseball fan will, but you don’t have to be a fan of the game in order to have fun reading it. Rushin’s sense of humor mixed with his fact-filled stories will appease any audience, especially trivia buffs. They might want to know how Babe Ruth ended up with #3 on his uniform, or how an NYPD valor medal will forever be linked with the Yankees interlocking NY logo.

The pace of this book is slow, as it should be. Think of a lazy summer drive on the rural roads heading into Cooperstown, where Rushin claims “every ingredient necessary for a baseball game, is just beyond the car window: cow, horse, sheep, tree and hops.

Which is to say ball, bat, glove, grass and beer”. If you’re having trouble waiting for Opening Day 2018, or if you’re a trivia buff looking to gain some knowledge, settle down with “The 34-Ton Bat; The Story of Baseball as Told Through Bobbleheads, Cracker Jacks, Jock Straps, Eye Black and 375 Other Strange and Unforgettable Objects”, you won’t be disappointed.

Mrs. Nydam said the panel discussion was such a success, the Guidance Department plans to make it a permanent addition to the Freshman Transition Program.

“We definitely plan to continue the forum annually,” she said.

“Though many of the topics are covered at length by counselors, teachers and parents, when the freshman hear advice from their older peers I think it just resonates more strongly. Plus, our seniors have their own unique perspectives to share and their experiences are certainly fresher in their minds.”

The start of high school should not be a time for anxiety and uncertainty but rather a time to discover your strengths and determine who you are “The start of freshman year can be fraught with anxiety though it truly needn’t be,” said Superintendent of Schools Vincent S. Smith. “Though any new situation comes with a fair amount of uncertainty, high school is truly an unencumbered time for students to discover their strengths and determine their interests and who they want to be. However, with the wisdom of experience, I know that it’s easier said than done, which is why programs like the Freshman Transition Program are so crucial. Not only does the program provide a framework to connect our high school seniors with the freshmen, further promoting the inclusive climate that has been established at the high school, but it also provides the freshman with the social and emotional supports to foster their success throughout high school at the most crucial time of their high school careers – the beginning.

Fashion Frenzy A Different Kind of Gift

As the song says….”It’s the most wonderful time of the year.”

Shop owners love this time of year! The holiday season brings busy days filled with shoppers searching for just the right gift for someone special in their life. It can also be hectic and stressful time of the year with too much to do and not enough time to fit in all the regular life stuff along with Holiday parties, shopping, Christmas cards, decorating and wrapping! We all need to take a moment and remember to breathe and enjoy this Season. This Season of giving.

And I propose that we expand our definition of giving to include more than just a present under the tree. Let’s give a little more of

ourselves, our attention, our time, our love.

I was recently reminded of how easy it is to keep our heads down and work on our to do lists. I was in the shop working on checking in some recently consigned items. I was determined to push through and get as much done as possible. When I looked up an older gentleman was entering the store. I welcomed him as he carried a large bag of clothes to the counter. He was a handsome man, well dressed and well put together. He mentioned that he had called and was told to stop in and his items would be reviewed to see if they would be a good fit for the shop.

I was slightly skeptical. It’s rather unusual for Men to come in and set up accounts with us. But, I was intent on getting back to my task at hand-ticketing the many bags at my feet, is I didn’t give it much thought. I told him I would peek at what he had. What a nice surprise to find a bag filled with such lovely items. Now, he had my attention. I connected his dapper appearance and the stylish clothes in the bag and asked, “Are you in retail? These are fabulous items!” I was head down in business mode. When I looked up, I realized the man’ head was tilted-he hesitated and said, “No, these were my wife’s things.” That’s when I stood up. I looked him right in the eyes and said, “I am very sorry for your loss.” He said, he was sorry, too. I thanked him for choosing me to honor his wife by continuing her love of fashion by sharing it with others. As I continued to check the items in I told him I thought I would have liked his wife and wished that I had the chance to meet her.

If her clothes were any indication of the kind of Woman she was, then she appeared to have been a classic gal with a bit of a sassy flair. He smiled, lowered his head and nodded. He told me that he loved to make her happy. Looking nice…made her happy so he delighted in buying her these things. We chatted for a bit more before he went on his way and I returned to work.

It was a lovely reminder of what I already know. It’s too easy to get caught up in the doing. So easy to focus on the checking off an item on you to do list. I will remember what a lovely gift we exchanged with each other. The gift of someone’s time and attention. The gift of sharing a story about a loved one.

Healthy Morsels, II Holiday Eating

Here we are in the thick of the holiday season, holiday season for eating that is. The time from Halloween to January second is a time for eating. It can be a rough time for someone trying to get a handle on what and how much they are eating. It all starts with the Halloween candy that calls our name from wherever we hid it. The siren call for eating carries on right through Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year. What can you do this year to make the season more peaceful when it comes to food and eating?

The second important thing to do over the holidays is plan. I know, I know. Planning is boring or there isn’t enough time, yada, yada.

All are true but when it comes to curbing mindless eating, a little planning goes a long way. If you have spent a long day at work or shopping for the holidays, how nice would it be to come home to a meal simmering in your crockpot rather than calling for takeout?

How about the holiday parties that destroy our good intentions?

Plan a little and avoid the post party guilt’s. Visualize yourself not drinking too much (a total good intention wrecker!) and eating in a mindful way. Slow it down. The food will be there and you will not miss out. There will be plenty of opportunities to eat all of what you love when you really want it.

Turns out there are plenty of things you can do to change how you eat and make the whole process more peaceful. First, be mindful of what and how you are eating. This sounds a lot simpler than it actually is but if you eat mindfully you will have no problem with overeating and the resulting shame. Eating mindfully means slowing down enough to pay attention to how you feel both physically and emotionally. Are you hungry? How are you feeling mentally? Sad, bored, excited? What is it you feel like eating? How does the food smell and taste? What is the texture of the food? As you eat pay attention to how you feel. Are you filling up or are you not able to sense how your stomach is feeling? Stop eating when you feel pleasantly content. If you are having a hard time determining this, slow down. It’s way too easy to overeat and not realize it until you are uncomfortably full. There are many reasons people eat and most of them are not because of physical hunger. Tune into what you are feeling and see if you can sit with that for just a little bit. Food cures one thing and that is physical hunger. Emotional hunger may be satisfied with food but for only the smallest time frame. After mindless eating criticism and shame are almost certain to show up.

Last but not least, ditch the guilt’s. The holidays come once a year and we are going to eat foods we don’t normally get to enjoy.

If you eat mindfully the bit extra is no big deal. Even if you overeat in a big way the guilt’s will not change a darn thing. They even promote further eating by creating a need to soothe ourselves.

Irony rules the universe!

Students of Manasquan Warrior ‘Fan-atics’ Support Athletics at Manasquan High School

It’s no secret that athletics play a big role in the happenings at Manasquan High School. The Warriors have experienced much success lately, notably the Girls Basketball, Boys Baseball, and Football programs. Make no mistake, these athletes push their bodies and minds to the limit to earn Shore Conference and NJ State Titles, but the support they have from the school and community is second to none.

Not to be overshadowed, the students of Manasquan High School take great pride in representing at games and they do it with some flare. This year the football fans showed support by a ‘black out’, wearing pajamas, and even showing support for the Rumson-Fair Haven community after a recent students passing by donning all purple; RFH’s colors. This type of activity does not come together by itself. Connor Tezeneu, a senior at MHS, takes on a lot of the responsibility in organizing the fans. He says, “...the sports teams represent our school’s athletics, but it is our students in the bleachers that represent our pride in our school…” Connor went on to say, “...Our school spirit comes from us being one big family,

The members of the community always come out in big numbers to support the Warriors as the seasons carry into conference and state playoffs- but there is a solid core that goes from scrimmages to the end of the season and the support is unwavering. One thing that is very special to Manasquan HS and the towns that surround, is the fact that it is not uncommon to see generations of families at Vic Kubu Field for a Saturday afternoon football game.

According to Joan Shaughnessy, “...My parents always went to the Manasquan Football games even before any of their grandchildren ever played and on any given weekend you would see generations of people who have been watching Squan football ever since they were young.” Mrs. Shaughnessy is very

we have to show other schools that we bleed blue…!” According to Tezeneu, Manasquan HS was once named the number one student section in the Shore Conference.

Having home court advantage is another bonus and according to senior Dara Mabrey of the girls basketball team, “.....there is an advantage in playing at home because the whole crowd is supporting you, the athletic director, athletic staff, coaches, and fans. When the other team enters it is YOUR gym and we can be intimidating….”

So there you have it. It is getting more and more difficult to grab bleacher space at Warrior athletic events as support for teams grows each year. Sports such as field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, and ice hockey have seen an increase in their fan base as interest in these sports continue to grow. Globe Trotting In Bermuda: Stellar Snorkeling, Scenic Beaches and a Fish Called Wahoo

Yes, the water in Bermuda really is that iridescent blue you see in the tourism photos. But as spectacular as it is to look at, you need to dip below the surface to experience the best it has to offer.

And when dining out in Bermuda, you have to taste Wahoo, a local white fish that restaurants cook different ways. It was fitting that our first dinner out in Bermuda was at a restaurant called Wahoo’s Bistro and Patio on St. George’s Harbour. Not only does Wahoo’s dish up delectable versions of its namesake and other dinner fare, but we were also entertained by the Bermuda chubs flitting in the water next to us.

During our trip there in early October, we snorkeled at Tobacco Bay, where we glided past coral and numerous species of fish, including rainbow parrot fish, blue angel fish and Bermuda chubs (more on the chubs later!). You can also eat, drink and sun on the beach.

We stayed at Grotto Bay Beach and Resort on the northern end of the island, where the two hotel restaurants were surprisingly good and most of the staff members were friendly and helpful. You can buy bus tokens at the front desk, but not on the bus.

We had purchased our snorkel equipment at home at the Jersey Shore because we had been warned that some of the best snorkeling spots on the island have no rentals in sight.

We also ate at The Swizzle Inn, down the street from our hotel.

Dinner was good, when it finally arrived, but service was inept and slow.

The best part of our visit to the famous Horseshoe Bay Beach, which was mobbed on Columbus Day when we were there, was the vista from the boardwalk overlooking the beach. We were grateful to cool off and swim in a calm cove next to the main beach, especially since the ocean surf was too rough even for us, despite being salty dog veterans of jumping Jersey Shore waves.

We enjoyed far superior food and service at our two favorite island restaurants: The Harbourfront in Hamilton and The White Horse Pub and Restaurant in St. George.

It was fun swimming and jumping waves at Elbow Beach (like Horseshoe, the surf was too rough for snorkeling). But the closest restaurant we found, which was still a significant walk on the sand, was Mickey’s, where the prices skyrocket far above even the typical high prices for Bermuda restaurants. So we walked back to the bus and stopped at The Bermuda Bistro in Hamilton where the food and service were top notch.

Don’t miss the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo, featuring flamingos, giant turtles, seals and many other creatures.

We took buses as often as possible because cab fare gets expensive quickly. Allow extra time for both modes of transport and make cab reservations in advance as much as you can or you will likely face lengthy waits.

Bermuda does not allow its tourists to rent traditional cars, but just this summer rentals of tiny electric two-seaters became available.
