MEDICAL CANNABIS CONNECTION A pioneer in medical marijuana, Dr. Anthony Anzalone (NJ) leads the discussion of his show, “Medical Cannabis Connection”. This is a show for public discussion about how medical cannabis has changed so many lives. Dr. Anzalone will take callers during every podcast. Each hour will be categorically driven. For example, shows like “Seizures and medical cannabis” for instance. Dr. Anzalone has had thousands of patients, many of whom came from pain management and taking highly addictive opiates. Dr. Anzalone’s former patients stopped taking opiates at a 45% rate. Quitting opiates altogether. These are your neighbors and friends who now have an alternative option in states that qualify. Let’s talk medical marijuana. Let’s hear from patients. Let’s talk about the facts. It’s the “Medical Cannabis Connection!”

The Power of Positive Thinking What’s Your Love Language by Allison Feehan, N.D., D.Psc, CRMT
In our minds Spring is about newness, rebirth, growth, and love. It’s our reward for making it through another long winter. With the sweet breath of fresh air comes the need to get back into shape, curb our diets, or make some other lifestyles changes we have been longing to begin. Lifestyle changes come from within and Spring can call for some assessments of what we want to change. Our relationship. Our relationship with ourselves or our relationship with others. Have you ever been in relationship after relationship and you can’t figure out for the life of you why the relationship doesn’t work out? Why your needs haven’t been met? Sometimes the end of each relationship has a similar ending. In a relationship, communication and conflict can either be positive or negative. The realization of how your partner speaks to you, treats you, and loves you might have everything to do with what each other’s love language is. This could improve one’s relationship in a positive way or be critical in saving it.
Allison Feehan N.D., D.Psc, CRMT Owner of the Coastal Cottage 64 Bridge Avenue Bay Head, NJ 08742
Gary Chapman’s best-selling book, the 5 Love Languages published in 1995 broke out these love languages with the theory that each person has one primary and one secondary love language. “Chapman suggests that to discover another person’s love language, one must observe the way they express love to others and analyze what they complain about most often and what they request from their significant other most often. He theorizes that people tend to naturally give love in the way that they prefer to receive love, and better communication between couples can be accomplished when one can demonstrate caring to the other person in the love language the recipient understands.” How enlightening is this?! Here are the 5 examples from Chapman’s book for expressing heartfelt commitment and love to your partner. l. Words of Affirmation – using words to build up the other person. “Thanks for taking out the garbage.” Not – “It’s about time you took the garbage out. The flies were going to carry it out for you.” 2. Gifts – a gift says, “He was thinking about me. Look what he got for me.” 3. Acts of Service – Doing something for your spouse that you know they would like. Cooking a meal, washing dishes, vacuuming floors, are all acts of service. 4. Quality time – by which I mean, giving your spouse your undivided attention. Taking a walk together or sitting on the couch with the TV off – talking and listening. 5. Physical touch – holding hands, hugging, kissing, sexual intercourse, are all expressions of love. Check-in and feel the pulse of your relationship from time to time. Ask if your partner’s needs are met. It will queue them as well to ask you if yours are being met. Understand each other’s part in the relationship. It’s healthy. It’s positive. It’s open. It’s vulnerable. It’s progressive. Perhaps your primary or secondary love language is just pure validation. Validation for the work you do, the love you give, how hard you work, etc. Demonstration of your love and affection for your partner can begin with a new relationship or repair a long-term one. Out of these five ways, each of us has a primary love language which speaks more deeply to you than all the others. Discovering each other’s language and speaking it regularly is the best way to keep love alive in a marriage or relationship. Focus on the secondary love language can further nurture each other’s needs. Reflection on one’s own actions and contributions to a relationship is critical in keeping the connectedness you share sacred.

Three Days of Related Events will be Held as Run-Up to Race By Denise DiStephan
This year, there are 32 race teams, with one team for each boat, and boats competing in various classes. A team can range from a few to 15 people. There are four or five classes of boats out on the ocean simultaneously, Potthoff said. There is a first, second and third prize for each class, with prizes earning points and points tallied at the end of the season to determine the overall winner.
The Point Pleasant Beach Offshore Grand Prix will be held a few weeks later than it was held the last few years. The powerboat races will start at noon June 16, following a few days of related events. That’s a bit later than during the past three years when it was held the weekend before Memorial Day, said Toni Potthoff, president of the NJ Offshore Powerboat Racing Association.
The race route will start at the inlet and then proceed south and onto a five-mile rectangular course. The number of miles will vary based on class. Click here to see a diagram of the race route and more details about the event http://njoffshore. org/PPB%20Race.html
This year the event is in June because it will be held in Florida in May and cannot continue on to New Jersey until June, Potthoff said. That decision is made by the national Offshore Powerboat Association and not by the local group or the municipality, she explained.
More information about the opening event was not available by press time.
On the night of June 14, the Point Pleasant Beach Chamber of Commerce will hold a block party, where visitors can meet competitors, listen to live bands and stores will hold sidewalk sales. At 5 p.m. June 15, a parade will proceed from the train station, down Arnold, onto Ocean Avenue and then onto Broadway and back to the station, Potthoff said.
“Anything can change at the last minute, which is typical of boat racing,” Potthoff said, encouraging race fans to keep checking the website and social media for updates. On the morning of June 15, boats are allowed to test, usually between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., she said.
The NJ Transit train station on Arnold Avenue will be used as the pit area for competing boats from June 13-16, with a trolley running and stopping there, she said. Registration will be held on June 14 and 15 at the Amethyst Beach Motel, according to this schedule http://www.oparacing.org/ppb.html
Volume 5, Issue 52
The main racing event on June 16, which is Father’s Day, will start with smaller boats, followed by larger boats racing, Potthoff said.

The racers, who come from all over the U.S., including many from the Jersey Shore region, compete in numerous locations during the race season.
Mayor Stephen Reid, the Rotary Club and the local race committee will choose a charity for the event to donate to, Potthoff said. The Rotary Club will sell T-shirts and programs, with proceeds donated to the selected charity, she said. A crane at Ken’s Landing Marina will put boats in the water prior to the main racing event, she said.

The all-volunteer NJ Offshore Powerboat Racing Association is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the club. Rover Rescue Influencing Your Dogs Emotions by Lauren Kehoe
Humans are emotional beings, and dogs are equally intuitive. We tend to feed off people who are around us. It can be difficult to maintain a cheerful persona when someone we care about is upset and going through a difficult time. It’s no secret that dogs bond and become attached to the people in their life. Their emotional intelligence is extremely keen. Energy is contagious, especially to animals as sensitive as dogs. When owners are happy, dogs feel it. When owners are sad, dogs feel it. We can try and hide things as hard as we can, but deep-down dogs know. They are like a close friend or family member, sensing through the mask despite sincere attempts to hide discomfort. So how does this affect our four-legged friends, and in turn us? Every dog is an individual, and varying personalities dictate behavior. Many dogs will feed off our emotion and allow it to influence their behavior. Studies of those hospitalized for dog bites have shown that a good majority of those bitten share common factors of increased anxiety, depression, and irritability. Imagine being in a room with someone who will not stop pacing. You could be calm and collected at first but left alone with someone repeatedly engaging in anxious behavior could often leads a plea to stop. Dogs cannot speak to us, they cannot understand explanations. Working with nervous, shy, or baseline anxious dogs requires a certain level of calmness. Dogs can be put into situations they cannot control, and sometimes they feel their only escape is to bite.

Of course, energy isn’t the only cause Lauren Kehoe of dog bites, many other environmental is an avid animal lover and situational factors come into play. and dog owner. This doesn’t mean we cannot try and stay as safe as possible. On the flip side, think of one of your worst days. Drudging around, wallowing in self-pity, waiting for the clock to strike bedtime. Encounter a genuine overly positive individual. As annoying as it may be at first, the longer you spend with that person (or dog), the more difficult it becomes to maintain a bad mood. The more and more positive associations you create with a dog, the higher the chances are of you winning a pup over. Animal rescue is emotional work, yet also takes a certain level of empathy and emotional awareness to thrive. We work with troubled, mistrusting, and uncertain dogs every day. Walk into a run angry, frazzled, upset, and they will indeed sense it. This extends past rescue work and into every environment you encounter a dog. Just like people, you never know what kind of day a dog is having. They are complex, feeling creatures, and it is important to practice emotional regulation around them in order to help everyone remain healthy and safe. We are only human, and emotions can often overwhelm us alone. But the more positive and calm we can remain around dogs, the happier and healthier those relationships will be.

Shore Decor In Full Bloom By Ashleigh Young Santamaria
They say ‘April showers bring May flowers’, and this is especially true this spring when it comes to wallpaper design trends for your home. Floral wallpaper has been popping up everywhere adding texture, pattern and color to all types of décor. Wallpaper had its beginnings as early as 200 B.C. in China, the land where paper was first invented. From it’s humble beginnings as rice paper glued to walls, wallpaper quickly made its way through the Middle East and Europe, culminating in a wallpaper frenzy in the Roaring ‘20s which was nicknamed The Golden Age of Wallpaper boasting 400 million rolls sold in that time period. Since then, wallpaper has gone through many evolutions. And now with technology infiltrating every last nook and cranny of our lives, wallpaper offerings have never been more diverse. In fact, no one is really talking about wallpaper at all anymore. I believe the correct term today is “wall coverings”, many of which are washable, longer lasting, pre-pasted and even removable. Back in our March 2017 column we welcomed in the “Jungalow” trend where tropical palm wallpapers were all the rage. Nature still takes a front seat but this time in a wide variety of colors, styles and installation options designed to please the most discriminating anthophile. Dark Florals Floral designs with dark backgrounds add a modern twist to this traditional trend, adding a cozy indulgence to spaces. We LOVE this trend as a visual headboard in the bedroom and in a smaller powder room, where the oversize flowers make you feel like you’ve gone down the looking glass into a whimsical otherworld. We recommend pairing this look with neutral, light and blush tones in bedding and area rugs that are in keeping with the shades of the flowers. On the flip side, we have dark flower illustrations against a white background… this is the Calvin Klein of floral wallpaper: minimal, modern and timeless. Fifth Wall Flora The other trend we think is super fresh is breaking with tradition by wallpapering “the fifth wall”, otherwise known as your ceiling. Hear us out on this one! Wallpapering the ceiling adds an unexpected and joyful feature to simply designed rooms, changing the dynamic of the space without being overwhelming. We love how you can go as soft or bold with this approach as you’re comfortable with as you see in the picture of the neutral nursery versus the dynamic dining room. Tiny Blooms As a counter to the large abstracts, we’re also seeing a lot of more delicate, repeating floral patterns spring up which add a calming and organic feeling to any type of space from laundry rooms to entry ways and everything in between. There are no shortage of choices and price points from Johanna and Chip Gaines’ Magnolia line (available at Home Depot) to Serena and Lily’s Priano prints, designed to capture “the ethereal beauty of a watercolor”. With no commitment removable options growing in popularity, this trend is sure to stay in bloom well past Spring. Happy Decorating!

Fashion Frenzy What Growing Out My Hair Has Taught Me By Denise Brady Acanfora, Certified Personal Stylist and Owner, The Urban Exchange
I’ve wanted to grow out my hair for quite some time now. I have had a pixie for over 10 years. And I loved it. I was a busy mom of 2 small children when I first cut it. It was a celebration of losing the baby weight from focusing on getting lean and healthy. The cut suited me and my lifestyle. Things change. I am 10 years older. I started feeling a little exposed and in need of some more hair to soften my appearance. I have attempted to grow my hair out before. I would hang in there for a while. Then the edges would get scruffy. It wasn’t easy to style because it was a weird length. So I would cave and cut it all off. I would default to what I knew – super short hair – even though that’s not really what I wanted anymore. The uncertainty of how my hair would be in different phases was uncomfortable. How long would it take to style? What would it look like in a few weeks? Instead of pushing through and getting to the other side – where the magic of transformation is – I would go back to what I knew. Let’s be clear. It’s not really about the hair at all! It’s more about not liking the feeling of being uncomfortable and then taking an action to escape that feeling. It’s way bigger than just the bangs.
actions. We encourage each other to be brave and do the scary stuff so that we can achieve our goals. We are companions in the uncomfortable and witnesses to each other’s wins. And we drink coffee. There’s so much growth in the Spring season. It’s delightful. I hope to be one of the things that blooms this season. I wish the same for you. And I promise not to cut my bangs because I’ve had a bad day.
But growth – literal and metaphorical – does not come from being comfortable. If you stay comfortable everything stays the same. As Rene Syler says “You won’t grow when you’re comfortable or be comfortable when you’re growing.” So…I am pushing through the awkward and uncomfortable phases of growing out a pixie. The struggle is real. I have, however, been rewarded with seeing my hair fall into place and resemble the pics that I’ve shown my stylist. It’s almost there. And yet – I almost cut it all off because it wasn’t growing fast enough! Wasn’t. Growing. Fast. Enough. I almost went back to the starting point because the finish line wasn’t as close as I wanted it to be. Yup. That makes sense. Cut it all off and start again!
at a fraction of
Fabulous Fashion the Price!
That’s crazy talk! And then it hit me. This is the definition of insanity! I keep doing the same thing over and over again without ever getting a different result. The result that I wanted. For days now I have circled back to this idea. And it started me thinking. How many other ways do I stop growing because it’s uncomfortable and it’s much easier to fall back into my comfort zone where I know how things will look and feel? And then the military slang “embrace the suck” came to mind. In order to get through – to get to the other side – you need to embrace what is. When you truly want to change something you need to sit in the uncomfortable reality of what is – and deal with the issues head on- in order to enjoy the good stuff on the other side of “the suck.” I will never have longer hair if I don’t embrace and acknowledge the awkward growing out phase. Cutting it off is easy. Cutting it off will never get me longer locks, though.

Back to Earth Crystal Energy For A High-Vibe Home by Natalie Berko
There is an ever increasing focus on how a home looks, it’s easy to forget about designing for how a home feels. Many people may not even realize that this factor is something they can change. The objects that we choose to put in our homes hold vibrations. Crystals have unique beautiful energetic vibrations that can help you set the tone for your home. For centuries, crystals have been used in homes to ward off negativity, increase prosperity, improve sleep, and create balance. Our homes are sacred, a place to unwind and connect with loved ones. Crystals help ensure your space remains both cozy and safe. There are thousands of crystals to choose from so it’s important to know a few basics. The first step is to cleanse your space and crystals for a nice clean slate. Placing crystals within your home without a cleansing will only amplify stagnant energy. Burning sage is a great and simple method to remove negative energy from your home. All you need for a cleanse is a stick of sage, a fireproof container to catch the ashes, and a lighter or match. Light your sage and place it in your container and make sure your windows are open to release any negativity. Keep a positive intention in mind, waft the smoke over your crystals and continue to waft the smoke walking around your home. This is a great way to just give your home a clean energy. Crystals will absorb energy overtime so it’s a good idea to perform this ritual once a month to give your home a fresh energy. After your home is cleansed it’s time to activate your crystals. Activate your crystals through a simple mindfulness ritual. Take the crystals one at a time and hold them in the palms of your hands. Relax your breath, close your eyes, and think about what energy you want this crystal to bring to your environment. Do this ritual for each crystal and place them in the rooms that you feel resonate with you, follow your intuition. When matching the crystals to their rooms, you can amplify the energies you need most in that particular space. When you start assigning your crystals their duties around the house, the bedroom will beam with love and relaxation, the living room becomes energized, and your whole space takes on a protective aura.

Crystals for every room! Rose Quartz Vibe: Love, harmony Natalie Berko Certified Room: Bedroom Crystal Healer Rose quartz is the crystal of self-love and gives off a nourishing gentle vibration. A great way to use rose quartz in the bedroom is to place four crystals on each bed post. Having these on each post will blanket you with a soothing calming feeling, like an energetic blanket. Amethyst Vibe: Calm, meditative Room: Office Our office space is where we do a lot of thinking, and amethyst can offer great support. Every time you glance at your crystal, you will be reminded that you brought it here to help you clear your mind and focus. Clear Quartz Vibe: Energy, clarity Room: Bathroom The bathroom is where we go to literally cleanse ourselves, so there is no better crystal than clarifying quartz. Place a piece near your shower or tub to amplify the cleansing of the water, to give your mind and body clarity. Citrine Vibe: Happiness, thought Room: Kitchen Citrine is beautiful placed on a window sill to fill your spirit with a joyous playful energy. The kitchen is where we prepare meals to nourish our bodies. The best tasting food is prepared by a happy chef, so it’s important to keep the kitchen full of happy energy. Selenite Vibe: Clearing, grounding Room: Living Room The living room is usually a high traffic area where many different moods and events can take place. Selenite offers a soft healing vibration the is great at keeping the area clear and calm.

Healthy Morsels, II Gut Health 101 by Lynn O’Hara
How’s your knowledge of gut health? Did you know that our guts have 300 to 500 different species of bacteria? These bacteria inhabit our guts and keep us healthy in all types of ways. Current research is linking gut bacteria to weight, depression, immune system issues, and a variety of other illnesses and conditions. If our gut isn’t healthy, we aren’t healthy. Symptoms of an unhealthy gut include the following; upset stomach, high sugar diet, unintentional weight changes, sleep issues, skin irritation, autoimmune issues and food intolerances. Many people complain of these issues. Can it really be that an unhealthy gut microbiome is to blame?
Lynn O’Hara, MS, RD, LPC Licensed Psychotherapist Registered Dietitian (732) 899-9312 www.lynnoharalpc.com
Turns out that, yes, an unhealthy microbiome can be to blame for many of our health woes. A whopping 80% of our immune system is in our microbiome, or our gut, including the mouth, nasal passages and genitalia. How did our microbiome get so out of whack? The first place to look is at our diets. We eat an inordinate amount of sugar and processed foods. These types of foods don’t provide us with prebiotic material, food for the bacteria in our microbiome, nor do they provide us with a diversity of new bacteria. Add in our propensity for antibiotics, which kill off our beneficial bacteria along with those the medication is targeting, hormone fed meat and dairy products and a multitude of chemicals from pesticides and weed killers and you’ve got the makings of a very unhealthy gut. It’s no wonder the incidence of autoimmune issues is on the rise. It’s really a very serious problem. Research is targeting the microbiome for answers to obesity, diabetes, brain fog, cancer, and the list goes on. So what can you do to improve your own microbiome? Turns out there are simple answers. It will require you to eat differently and some people do struggle with that. Keep in mind that any change in the right direction is helpful so start slowly if this feels overwhelming. First, wean yourself off the processed food train. The bacteria in our microbiome needs fresh fruits and vegetables for food. Fiber helps our guts in many ways. While you’re at it, make the fruits and vegetables organic. We do not need a gut full of chemicals. Change out your dairy and meat products for organic as well. Add beneficial bacteria to your gut by including fermented foods in your diet such as kombucha, kimchi, sauerkraut and the like. Yogurt and kefir are also good sources of probiotics or beneficial bacteria our guts need. I’ve talked to people who suffered from chronic stomach upset and when they drank a kombucha a day the stomach issues disappeared. Also pay attention to the stress you’re under. Stress is not good for gut health. If you can, wean yourself off the antacids as well. They are incredibly overused. Talk to your doctor about the possibility of getting off those medications. Other things you can do include taking a probiotic for a time until you incorporate enough into your daily diet. So to sum up, our gut health is very important to our overall health. To keep your gut microbiome rolling along we need to do the following: 1. Avoid processed foods and high sugar foods. 2. Eat organically as much as possible. 3. Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetable. 4. Add beneficial bacteria by taking a probiotic. 5. Add fermented foods into your diet. 6. Manage stress. 7. Evaluate with your doctor antacid medications being taken. 8. Use antibiotics only when absolutely needed. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel when you tend to your gut health. Until next time, eat healthy, be happy!

Parental Guidance What’s Hempening? By Maureen Whelan
Several weeks ago I drove past a gas station with a large sign reading “We have CBD”. I didn’t go into explore, as I imagined it being in a rusty bin along with the day old sushi. I love my hemp oil, but would never purchase it while fueling up my car. But it made me think, maybe someone else would... So here’s my humble attempt to talk about hemp. I’m not talking about pot, marijuana, medical marijuana or weed. I believe there is a place for medical marijuana, under the care of a medical practitioner, but that’s not me, so I’ll leave that to the professionals. I wouldn’t smoke it recreationally either. I have worked with too many children whose parents struggled with drug addiction, I understand the dangers and have no plans to touch the stuff, legal or not. I’m talking about hemp, sometimes referred to as “CBD”. Hemp is part of the Cannabis sativa plant species and is commonly known as industrial hemp. It was an unfortunate casualty of a bill passed in 1937 by uneducated lawmakers who believed this was too similar to the marijuana plant, also a Cannabis species. Although hemp does not cause any psychoactive effect, it became a Schedule 1 drug placing it in the same category as heroin, ecstasy and LSD. So, the thousands of uses that industrial hemp provided, came to a screeching halt. Today, industrial hemp is regaining its rightful place as a multipurpose environmental savior. Hemp is fast growing, grows well in a variety of climates and can be harvested for textiles, foods, hemp oil, nutritional supplements, building materials, biofuels, and bioremediation, (using living plants to clean groundwater and soil of contaminants). So this poor misunderstood plant, has the potential to restore homeostasis to our toxic environments. Yes, hemp is back, but old reptations die hard. Historically, Hemp was used in Ayurvedic medicine dating back thousands of years. But it wasn’t until 1992 that the endocannabinoid receptors were discovered. This is a naturally occurring receptor found in the human body that requires cannabidiols to be fed. Hemp is naturally rich in phytocannabinoids which are carefully extracted from the plants oils. These include the cannabidiols (CBD), cannabigerol (CBG) and many others. The endocannabinoid system interacts with your brain, nervous system, sensory-motor system and immune systems. It’s primary role is to support the body’s detoxification process, reduce inflammation and restore homeostasis to cells. Medical schools are still slow to upgrade curriculums to include education on the endocannabinoid system, and SOTT.net (www.sott.net) reports that only 13% of medical school in the U.S. mention this critical system at all. So here I am, resigned to educate you myself. But I have to pause and give credit to Dr. Cheng Ruan, MD who is a pioneer in this field of research, and from whom I have learned so much.
Maureen Whelan is a pediatric Occupational Therapist and mother of 4.
The down side of hemp deregulation is that a lot of players jump in the game for a quick profit. The hemp industry is projected to grow to a 22 billion dollars in the next 4 years. Uneducated or unscrupulous, some are producing hemp oil without understanding the importance of proper extraction, use of plant species, biochemistry in the body or harmful additives. These are the products and stories that make the news and discourage doctors from exploring or recommending hemp oil as a supplement. These are also the products that are either ineffective or potential dangerous for you. As an Occupational Therapist I’m amazed by the presence of the endocannabinoid system and its role in our body. Homeostasis is the self-regulating process in the body that promotes balance and ultimately wellness. Everyday I work with children who struggle with regulation. It may involve brain functions such as sleep, alertness and attention, energy, regulation of motor responses, the ability to understand their environment, regulation of digestion and breathing, and regulation of emotions. An alarming increase in environmental toxins found in foods, cleaners, clothing, preservatives, lawn care, toys and electronics are challenging our children’s ability to regulate. Their homeostasis is thrown off balance, and they are struggling daily to sleep, play, learn and feel happy. Even as a health conscious adult, I struggle to maintain regular body systems. My body has a endocannabinoid system and finally it is happy because I’m feeding it what it needs. As parents sometimes we need to venture to understand our own bodies, our own children and educate the professionals. Hemp oil is the most valuable supplement in my house today, and I’m encouraging each of you to restore balance to your lives, reduce what’s toxic, practice self-care, and be mindful of the habits you are instilling in your children, they just may last a lifetime.
